Incidentally, those 2s would still have hit Orryn. The dicey problems with needing to maintain a low weight for one's mount...
So, since I'm likely to make like Polonius in Hamlet shortly anyway, might as well try and do something worthwhile.
Stellah Acrobatics vs CMD: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
If this should be Orryn and not Stellah, the result will be 3 lower.

Hack's axe make a deep cut along the efreet's side, but his bolt clinks off her armor. Orryn charges in, scoring another heavy hit with his lance, but Tygora's falchion hits an artery on his way by and the halfling loses consciousness (but stays in the saddle). Roll to stabilize.

I'm fine with Stellah either becoming furious and attacking, or becoming concerned/confused and landing. Either can happen this turn once the bird notices lack of direction from the rider.

That, in fact, is why I took the flight path I did — if Orryn fell out of the saddle, he's got a ring of feather fall.
And by backstory, Stellah looks at the halfling as her parent, so she might go berserk if he dies, but right away she'll be more concerned than anything else. She'd likely land (though out of the efreet's reach).
| GMTrex |
Sounds good. We'll consider Stellah as having landed in her current position (making Orryn reachable by Skybek).

Round II
"Ahh hope yae've all been good tae day! Cayden Cailean likes those of yae whae help fight fer the enslaved!"
Skybek channels positive energy engulfing the company.
Skybek does not have selective channel, but he does have Alginment Channel. If Tygmora is within range, the dwarf will channel Good. This will heal all of those of good alignment. If Tygmora appears more than 30 feet away, then Skybek will not be so specific and he will simply channel energy to engulf Harnac as well.
Channel Energy: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 3) = 10
"Stay aroond, Harnac, Ahh can cast a fly spell on yae and let yae chase doon the witch in the sky!"
| GMTrex |
do you know how badly I wanted to do that right away??
That's what the spare is for!
Skybek: Alignment Channel allows you to affect outsiders but when you do so your channel does not affect any creatures but outsiders. Since nobody in your party is a good-aligned outsider, a normal channel is your only option if you want to heal them. I'll assume you do this.
Skybek shouts a prayer to the Drunken Hero, and Orryn suddenly regains consciousness. He finds himself still in the saddle but on the ground, and in a lot of pain.
Tygora (why do you all keep adding an 'm'?) engages the hoppity monk with a fury. "You will pay for that!!!" Her blade slices deep into the dwarf, nearly killing him on the spot. Mighty Senzo stoically fights on, however!

I totally misread that Alignment Channel. That was a mistake to take. I suppose I will need some more charisma and work toward getting selective channel. I was tying to find a way to do it without boosting my charisma.
Round III
Skybek immediately casts Fly on Harnac.
"Cayden Cailean, grant this dwarf the gift o' flight and let'em tak doon the flyin fire witch!"
With great urgency in the dwarf's voice, Skybek confides in Hack, "Dannae let the witch get awa, mae friend. Yae need tae tak her doon immediately, or we'll all die here and the witch will tak her vengeance on the rest!!"
Orryn Quattlebaum

Orryn's eye flickers open after Skybek's channel, and his soldier's mind assesses things quickly. Senzo! he rasps hoarsely. I can cure you a bit or I can give you a barkskin to help protect you! Which one?
Senzo Tanaka
|
Senzo grits hit teeth, "Howsabout killin her instead..."
Healing. Metagame rationale is that she's still likely to hit me even if I up my AC a few points. I'm hoping that the flying dwarven mayhem known as Harnac does her in. Surest way to keep her from killing Senzo is to kill her first."

only problem: it's going to take time. I'd dropped my axe.
ROUND 4
Hack is nearly frothing at the mouth seeing his friends getting cut down and scorched. As Skybek's divine magic courses through his frame, he shouts in glee. YEEEAAAAA-HA-HAAAA!! Locking eyes with the now-hated queen, he drops his crossbow, deliberately picks up his axe from the ground, kisses one of the blades, and leaps upward to engage her, heedless of the opening he's given her (AoO, I know...)
NOW FACE DWARVEN STEEL, YE FIERY B1TCH!!! I'M FER TAKIN' YE DOWN!!
He punctuates his battle challenge by claning his axe against the breasplate of his mighty armor.
Unfortunately, that's a double move--move to retrieve weapon, move to close with her.
Orryn Quattlebaum
|
Unless I'm missing something, he can't charge if he's taken a Move action.
If you are able to take only a standard action on your turn, you can still charge, but you are only allowed to move up to your speed (instead of up to double your speed) and you cannot draw a weapon unless you possess the Quick Draw feat. You can't use this option unless you are restricted to taking only a standard action on your turn.
Senzo: I was thinking heal too, but I wanted to give you the option.
Orryn, still in great pain, fishes a thin stick out of his haversack and reaches over to tap Senzo with it.
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Ugh.
With a groan, Orryn racks his brain desperately, trying to recall if he has any ability to contribute to this battle before they all perish.
Time to check your chronicles for boons, folks. Or else this is gonna be a short and bloody hot mess. I'll check mine when I get home.

We've done a lot of damage, and we still out number her. Skybek and Hack are still healthy with plenty of fight in them.
Acrobatics to Retreat: 1d20 + 11 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 11 + 4 = 34 I grab the prisoner closest to my path behind the throne and drop prone.
"Skybek and Hack, bring that dog-daughter down!"

How mean I am with tactics (within the written, of course) tends to be directly proportional to the health of the PCs, haha. At the moment, though, I am required to be a little mean.
Senzo tries to make off with one of the prisoners. As he approaches, the Pathfinder's eyes go wide and he starts to make frantic motions--which you imagine has something to do with the jet of flame that erupts from the floor as soon as Senzo gets near. Damage (Fire): 3d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 6) = 17 Despite the scorching (the monk's target looks nearly dead), Senzo still manages to drag the Pathfinder away before a second jet bursts from below.
Meanwhile, Hack begins a furious flying charge into battle, and Tygora begins the duel with a cruel cut to the jaw, nearly severing the dwarf's beard. Then she swings twice more, landing one lighter blow.

ROUND 4
Knowing that if this enemy remains alive after these swings the rest of the group is likely dead, Hack calls upon Skybek's Guidance to true his aim for the first strike. He is betrayed by the unfamiliarity of magical flight...but quickly rights himself and manages to score (at least!!) two hits on the foe. He curses and blusters the entire time. GIT...YE...DOWN!!!! USURPING WH0RE!! TYRANT!! SCOURGE OF CHILDREN!!!!

WILL IT BE ENOUGH?!?!
Hack, there is no surrender. There is no retreat, we'll die if we go through the flames. Throw everything you have at her.
Agreed. The Fly spell was key; but there is little more I can do than full attack.

THREE HITS FROM THE MIGHTY HARNAC LUCRIDIOUUUUUUUUUUUUS!!!!!
The second blow staggers the tyrant mid-air, and the third kills her outright. She falls dead to the floor with an enormous crash, soon disappearing to the Plane of Fire from whence she came. The wall of violet flame behind her soon dissipates as well.
Out of initiative!
There is, however, still the small matter of extracting the other prisoners from the traps beneath their feet...
Harnac Lucridious
|
Harnac takes advantage of the rare opportunity for a "look very cool" moment...he freezes (except for the heavy breathing) after the killing blow lands, then slowly sinks back to the floor, heaving like a bellows and bleeding freely, righteous murder in his eyes.
He then hucks a large gob of spit and blood at the spot where Tygora fell. Thaaaa's ROIT.
wiping his mouth on the back of his hand, he takes stock of the group. Ain't we a purdy bunch! Everyone still standin'?
Once it's clear everyone is still alive, the warrior turns his attention to the problem of freeing the prisoners. In a rare moment of inspriation, his eyes alight.
Do we know how this fire trap is triggered? Is it some pressure plate in the floor? If that's the case, I can fly our friends out one by one...If ye all stay back against the wall, I'm willing to try flyin' over ta see if it'll work...?
Can the prisoners stay far enough back so as to NOT be subject to the fire if it's triggered?
| GMTrex |
Intuitively knowing what he's looking for, Hack does see a pressure plate cleverly disguised to look like the floor. It looks as though if the prisoners move, the fire is triggered, or if someone else steps on the plate. He thinks the flying trick should work though!
Giving it a try, the dwarf finds that it works perfectly! All are soon removed from the hazard, and are eager to leave Fury's Hold.
News of Tygora’s defeat spreads quickly through Crystalcrag, and the oreads respond with a mix of disbelief, relief, and confusion about what the future holds. Eurdan Stonemantle does his best to organize and encourage the newly liberated geniekin, although he is now better able to lead them with the help of the rescued Glaheri. Thanks to your efforts at minimizing ifrit casaulties, the oreads and ifrits take the first steps in reconciling their differences, reintegrating the two populations, and keeping Crystalcrag united.
After several mighty feasts and many thick brews at the Fifth Facet, you gather at the gate to depart for home. There the slag giant Valsog gives you his thanks and offers a future service free of charge, while Stonemantle and Glaheri offer you a permanent welcome in Crystalcrag, should you ever choose to return. They hope you do!
Well done everyone! Day Job rolls and PFS #s please; Chronicles will be out shortly. I had a blast this one!

Oh, she was begging for a smack-down.
i'm betting the 2nd PrP will be for minimizing ifrit casualties, which I believe we did--I don't think we killed any (not sure about the spellcaster, I thought she might have died...)

That was awesome!! Nice way to finish her off, Hack! I seriously do not think we would have lasted long without that fly spell.
Especially since I was ready with invisibility AND a special outsider-affecting enlarge person spell if you all ever gave her some breathing room. :) Glad I could make you sweat, Orryn!
Did we earn 2 prestige?
You did! The only thing you lost was a special, super-powerful boon that's really hard to get (so hard, in fact, that GMs don't get it automatically--it must be earned as a player). See the crossed-out "Efreeti's Wish," which could be earned by defeating and trapping her, then succeeding on two of three DC 15 Intelligence or Wisdom checks to prevent her from twisting the wishes against you.
And I almost forgot: boon rolls!
Boon Rolls:

Harnac: 1d20 ⇒ 2
Orryn: 1d20 ⇒ 9
Senzo: 1d20 ⇒ 14
