Garen sighs as he follows the rest of his companions.
"I don't suppose we can just storm the place since they obviously know we're here or if anyone can take that man's place and send them on a wild goose chase perhaps?"

Heh, get people to start chatting is the trick. =)
"Gavirk said Vos's force was at least thirty strong..." Little Foot muses. "Other then Vos though, we're just seeing hobs." He kicks one of the dead hobgoblins to emphasize his point.
"If they took over, then their force might be even stronger, and with Vos is still in charge..." He scowls mightily at that unresolved puzzle.
"So far we've only seen what? Nine? Ten? There has to still be a significant number lurking somewhere. Not like hobs to give up a strategic military position." The dwarf frowns, clearly not a big fan of hobgoblins.
"Besides," He adds, with almost a grin, to his fellow dwarf. "We are about to storm them... just from over there, where they might not be looking just now."
He glances at Vinnie, "We'll try not to hit them so hard this time."

Theo leads the way through the secret door to find. . . a storage room! There are tall, empty shelves lining the walls of the small chamber, reaching almost to the ceiling. Two barrels that must have once contained pickles lie on their sides, brine puddles still pooled beneath them. Numerous empty meat hooks dangle from the ceiling.

"That's a bit ..underwhelming. I was expecting at least 20 hobgoblins we would be storming into"
Ash pouts a bit
"Let's walk this secret corridor and see what else we encounter? Right first?"
Ash will look carefully while moving through here (take 10 for perception, total 22)
while trying to remain silent

Little Foot scowls at Vinnie as the gregarious man starts discussing the crossbow.
"Sneaky or talky... not both." He whispers, as a reminder, moving over to the rooms lone door, and cracking it to see what lay beyond.

Who has that scroll of Hold Portal they gave us during the briefing? Vinnie?

Just a bit of forewarning, and in case anyone has some input, Theo's intention is to open the door to this room, to see what's in the hallway beyond and, assuming there are no immediate threats there, then to the door directly across the hall with the same intention.
Then head to the door down the hallway east after that, if things haven't exploded in our faces by that time
I'm seriously thinking of suggesting rolling the pickle barrels into the hallway, as rough barricades in case enemies come from the west. =) 'Cause its fun to use the environment!

Theo leads the party out into an empty hallway. He carefully across the hall and opens the door opposite, leading into a similarly-sized room, only with a large cooking fireplace taking up most of the northern wall; a black iron kettle is suspended over the hearth. The western half is filled with a long, narrow worktable clearly used for the preparation of food. The rest of the walls are covered with shelves holding spices, dry good, and various pots and pans, large bowls, terrines, and other cooking vessels.
Working the kitchens at the moment is a bugbear supervising two half-elven men. The two men slink against the wall when the door opens but the bugbear looks ready for visitors, as his wicked smile attests. He holds a giant glowing club. A skull hangs from his belt below his dirty studded leather vest.

Hobgoblin? check.

Glowing weapon even in hands of said Hobgoblin? Check.
Garen considers the scence and decides swiftly in a blink of the eye. His hammer flying in his hands even as he flies towards the hobgoblin.

Hobgoblin? check.
Bugbear. But still a goblinoid. Also, you don't have room to charge but you hit anyways.
Garen moves into the room and deals a heavy blow to the beast.
Despite the cover, Ash pops the hulking bugbear in the head with a rock.

1. Ash, Maaarv, and Garen

3. Vinnie, Theo, and Farg

Maaarv is up!

Afraid of setting off explosions in such a small space, Maaarv decides to rush in to the room, drawing his rapier. He circles around Theo and Garen and tries to take a stab at the bugbear with the glowing club.

Yes, it's a bigger deal when Maaarv misses, haha. But throwing bombs at a hobgoblin is harder than you'd expect when she's a monk.
Maaarv digs his blade into the bugbear's side; the beast barely flinches as the blood flows down his thigh.

The bugbear foams at the mouth and roars in rage as he brings his club in an arc down on Garen!

Little Foot snarls at the raging bugbear, and growls. "You call that a club?" He hauls back on his tetsubo and takes a mighty swing!
Melee Power Attack: 1d20 + 8 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 8 - 2 + 1 = 26, for 1d10 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12 damage.
edit: sadly, minimum damage does not quite back up the implied Crocodile Dundee quote! At least it probably hit.
He then shifts slightly to his left, to give those in the hallway a clearer view.

Maaarv again stabs into the bugbear!
Farg jumps into the kitchen and tries to bite the goblinoid but misses.
Ash's rock busts against a spice rack.
Theo then clubs into the bugbear!

Vinnie tries to catch the bugbear off-guard but it keeps its concentration on the battle at hand.
With a mighty swing, Garen brings the bugbear down!

Yay! People we can question we don't have to knock out first!
Little Foot nods at Garen, after the later delivers the final blow, takes a quick glance around, then moves back to the doorway to watch for further trouble, making sure no one lingers in the hallway, while the half-elves are questioned.

The half-elves answer, "We hail from the village of Purt (see the Fangwood map) but were captured by the hobgoblins several weeks ago. Ever since we've been put to work in the kitchens, looked over and beaten by Tralg here," they point to the unconscious bugbear.
"As far as we can tell," the half-elves explain, "this Vos fellow was a lieutenant in the Molthuni army and his crew took over this place but then mutinied after a few of them went downstairs and never came back up. Well, it didn't matter much because Vos' lover Elessia showed up right away with a local tribe of hobgoblins who took out Vos' mutinied crew. Vos has been promising the hobgoblins great rewards for accessing some elven wizard's chambers below but none of them has done it yet. We're just glad he never got the idea to send us down there."
| EndlessForms |
"By the beard! This means that this is but a forerunner. There are more of them mucking around and looking for some dead mage's chambers. Nothing good will come from this. What can you tell us about this Elessia?" Garen grumbles out his request, not happy to hear that piece of news.
"She's not around much. She comes here and sleeps and then says things about getting goblinoid reinforcements."
| EndlessForms |
They are unsure where she is at the moment, as she comes and goes without being clear on where she has been or where she is going.

Maaarv packs up his alchemical kit and throws his pack back on. "I'm ready. Wait, which way are we going?" He steps out into the hallway and cracks his knuckles.
