Considering you need an 18 to grapple me i think ill be ok.. The tentacles aren't gonna kil the Kytons..
Vladek Odradek

I didn't move you, someone else did. As for the tentacles, you have to make a separate CMB check for every target, including Grimnir. Don't forget the 20% miss chance.
Actually, the spell specifically says you roll one CMB check per round for all of them and apply it to everyone presently there (new arrivals, like Grimnir, do provoke new rolls).
miss chance, high is good: 1d100 ⇒ 54
tentacles VS Grimnir: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (14) + 13 = 27
miss chance VS Grimnir, high is...bad: 1d100 ⇒ 49
sorry, Grimnir: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Bear in mind, an 18 is easy for them to achieve.
Now's a good opportunity for everyone else to have a ranged weapon field day! :)

Hp 98/103 (after correction of previous, link on Grimnir and Bart
Penelope still can't see the kyton through all the other chains, so she keeps moving up.
Stand fast comrades!
Double move. C'mob guys, takes some damage so I can feel useful :)

I meant u needed to roll an 18 or better.. 27 misses his cmd by quite a bit.. No damage..

Vladek, how are you casting a spell on your familiar who's already flown away, is invisible, and has total concealment from you?
You mean the silence spell from round 1? I didn't initially realize it had a full-round casting time, so at the time I thought I'd cast it on him prior to his turning invisible and flying away. I'd considered changing Qadathra's action so he didn't fly away on round 1 (instead readying an action to cast magic missile on Lord Maravan when he cast a spell, which I promise you had been my initial thought-of alternative course of action), but by then you'd already declared the enemy actions and said that the spell had completed, so I accepted that. I thought, under the circumstances, you'd ruled that it was enough that he had been with me (and visible) when I began casting the spell.
GM Lithrac
|
In order for this to work, he'd need to cast greater invisibility prior to the silence spell to take effect, otherwise he wouldn't be able to cast a spell with a verbal component. But then, how do you cast the spell on her if you don't see her. I don't see anything in a familiar's abilities (share spells, etc.) that allows you to do what you intend to do.

He can see me just fine - I'd argue that our empathic link can allow me to find him (a quick game of "hot-and-cold" or whatever). However, the main thing is that what happened wasn't really what I intended to do. I went into it thinking silence had a standard action casting time, but you corrected me on that and then went ahead with the combat from there, and by the time I had an opportunity to correct anything the round had already gone forward with you both declaring the enemies' actions and saying the spell had gone off, so rather than retconning Qadathra's action, since the alternative action I'd already contemplated beforehand would have threatened to disrupt Lord Maravan's haste spell and the kyton attacks that by then had already been made, I assumed you'd seen the issue and had it covered to your satisfaction and I went with it, figuring things would be easier that way.
Oh, and I just caught this, maybe this what you're talking about; Qadathra's improved invisibility is an innate Faerie Dragon spell-like ability that doesn't need the normal components beyond an act of will (at least I didn't think so, and this corroborates that).
GM Lithrac
|
I actually learned something there - I didn't know that spell-like abilities didn't require verbal or somatic components. As for the empathic link, I would tend to agree if it remained within arm's reach, but not if it goes further - it isn't blindsight or something like that. Moreover, your familiar's spell-like ability is greater invisibility, not improved invisibility.
Your plan could work, actually. To recap, you start casting silence on Qadathra on round 1 (round 2 in the round count since you acted after the baddies), but your familiar has to remain close - it chooses to cast greater invisibility. Round 3 (now): Your silence spell goes off, Qadathra double moves, then you take your actual round 3 action, which is to cast black tentacles. However, I don't see how you can cast a spell without line of sight (remember, the chains offer total concealment beyond 30 feet, and concealment beyond 10 feet). Do you wish to change your action for this round?
Finally, I would like you to post the list of your prepared spells for the day. I could find the list of spells Qadathra knows, and how many of which level you can cast, but not the prepared list.
Will: 4d20 ⇒ (14, 7, 2, 1) = 24
SR: 3d20 ⇒ (20, 7, 19) = 46
Assuming the DC for your silence is 10+2+7=19, Lord Maravan makes his save. You manage to beat the SR of two of the Kytons, but the purple one isn't affected thanks to his SR.
Still waiting on Thorgrim and Kayluss's actions.

Sorry about that; I'd become accustomed in in-person gaming to being allowed to do it ad-hoc since it saved precious time. I've recorded them under the 'Abilities' section.
Also, I don't think the enemy gets a save against the silence, since it wasn't cast on them directly; that's supposed to be the beauty part. It's a field effect, like darkness and light spells (corroborated here).
As for this round's action, I didn't realize the total concealment part; that is a shit-load of chains. However, if I move 3 squares up (as I've done), that puts me within exactly 30 feet of the tentacles' intended epicenter. Can I cast it on a location with only partial concealment?
Kayluss
|
Kayluss pushed forward and again attempts to slash at the Kyton. As the blade bounces off the chains again he curses and calls back to the others. Any Chance one of you would want to use my freedom of movement scroll on me?
Move and attack w/ Power Attack
Attack: 1d20 + 15 - 3 ⇒ (4) + 15 - 3 = 16
Damage: 2d6 + 7 + 6 ⇒ (5, 5) + 7 + 6 = 23
Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 90
Kayluss took 1 point of damage from the Kyton's attacks.
GM Lithrac

Delaying Thorgrim's action since he hasn't posted since the start of the round, on Friday.
@Vladek: That looks like a really good tactic! A tad overpowered use for a second-level spell, but I'll definitely keep it in mind for one of my characters. The same tactics could work for an archer capable of casting silence on a durable adamantine arrow, in fact!
As for the concealment, I believe it was made clear at the start of the fight. Your movement indeed allows you to cast it where you intended to. Finally, if the attack roll/miss chance rolls are the same, then the damage roll will also be the same for everyone, of course.
Kayluss attacks one of the kytons, but to no avail. The chain devils attempt to break free from their tentacled prison. Lord Maravan does the same, but isn't successful.
CMB: 4d20 ⇒ (9, 1, 11, 5) = 26
Final showdown - round 4
1. Vladek, Thorgrim, Penelope, Bart, Grimnir, Kayluss
2. Kytons (5), Lord Maravan (5)
Bartholomew Robert Flaxseed

Hmm. Bart has a cape of the mountebank so he can get over there but I'm really reluctant to do so as I'd probably die instantly and won't be doing much damage anyways....
Bart shoots a ray of frost on the red kyton!
ranged touch: 1d20 + 10 - 5 ⇒ (11) + 10 - 5 = 16
cold: 1d3 ⇒ 1
Grimnir Foehammer

Finally in position to full atttack Grimnir rages and activates bane.. He swings at the injured one first. If it drops he'll switch to the one in front of Kayluss.
Attack 1: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (19) + 24 = 43
Attack 2: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (16) + 19 = 35
Confirm 1: 1d20 + 27 ⇒ (9) + 27 = 36
Miss: 2d100 ⇒ (43, 90) = 133
Dam 1: 4d6 + 32 ⇒ (1, 1, 2, 5) + 32 = 41 Damage is now +5 modifier
Dam 2: 4d6 + 32 ⇒ (5, 5, 6, 5) + 32 = 53
Dam Crit: 2d6 + 32 ⇒ (2, 4) + 32 = 38
Penelope Tyaden III

Penelope moves forward and halts just behind Grimnir and Kayluss, waiting for an opening to step in, and casting guidance on Keyless in the meantime.
Vladek Odradek
|
There was a lot to process at the time; I'm still getting used to PbP in some respects.
[dice=TENTACLES!]1d20+13[/dice] Add +5 to that result in the case of creatures already grappled.
damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Qadathra casts shield on himself as a further precaution. Vladek casts haste on the party.
Grimnir and Kayluss beware, you are in the tentacle zone (*doodoodoodoodoodoodoodoo...*).
Kayluss
|
Kayluss will take a deep breath, remembering back to his training on how to avoid getting caught up in rigging when fighting aboard a ship. With that in mind he takes another stab at the Kyton in front of him.
Brawler Training to get Blind Fight for 1min
Attack: 1d20 + 15 - 3 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 15 - 3 + 1 + 1 = 22
Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 14
Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 34
Damage: 2d6 + 7 + 6 ⇒ (3, 6) + 7 + 6 = 22
Vladek Odradek
|
Oh that's right. SR. Well, I'm not going to be doing much this fight....
If nothing else, you can take potshots with your bow - the bad guys can't move around too much right now.
GM Lithrac
|
Bart's ray is absorbed by the outsider, but Grimnir's blows prove far more efficient. The dwarf downs two of his opponents. Unfortunately, Kayluss' attack proves inefficient against the last kyton.
Final showdown - round 4
1. Vladek, Thorgrim, Penelope, Bart, Grimnir, Kayluss
2. Kyton (0), Lord Maravan (12)
Thorgrim the Bold Strider

Apologies for not posting. I wasn't getting any notifications that there had been updates, but I should have checked anyway. My bad! Sadly, it looks like Thorgrim would just stay where he is as he has no desire to enter the tentacles of Vladek's making.
Thorgrim looks around and kind of shrugs as he holds his piston maul at the ready. "Uhh... Master Flaxseed, what should we do?"
Hold Action
Thorgrim the Bold Strider

Soft cover puts my attack at +5/+0, plus Concealment. Means I probably won't do much. Maybe next round as an experiment.
GM Lithrac

Lord Maravan attempt to free himself from the tentacles, without any success.
CMB: 1d20 ⇒ 7
As for the Kyton he revels in his being caught, and lashes at Kayluss.
Chain: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 182d4 + 4 ⇒ (4, 2) + 4 = 10
Chain: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 242d4 + 4 ⇒ (3, 3) + 4 = 10
Chain: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 232d4 + 4 ⇒ (4, 1) + 4 = 9
Chain: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 162d4 + 4 ⇒ (4, 4) + 4 = 12
Final showdown - round 5
1. Vladek, Thorgrim, Penelope, Bart, Grimnir, Kayluss
2. Kyton (0), Lord Maravan (12)
Vladek Odradek

Don't forget, everyone: We're all hasted.
Qadathra spends the round sustaining his invisibility.
Vladek twists time around Grimnir, and where the immediate future once held one possibility for him, others emerge.
Now it's Grimnir's turn for 2 rounds of my Fortune Hex!
Thorgrim the Bold Strider
|
Thorgrim shrugs as he pulls one of his chakram from his belt and launches it through the air at Lord Maravan.
Chakram - Soft Cover | Haste: 1d20 + 9 - 4 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 9 - 4 + 1 = 24
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Concealment - Low Misses: 1d100 ⇒ 2
Damn...
Vladek Odradek

You could toss two more if you're able to make a full attack.
Thorgrim the Bold Strider
|
Can't draw multiple weapons on a move action, otherwise I would.
GM Lithrac

Grimnir & alii: don't forget that you can't 5-foot step in difficult terrain. Possibilities of full attacks are quite limited this round, except for Kayluss.
The forest of hanging chains hamper Thorgrim's aim and deflect the chakram.
Final showdown - round 5
1. Vladek, Thorgrim, Penelope, Bart, Grimnir, Kayluss
2. Kyton (0), Lord Maravan (12)
Bartholomew Robert Flaxseed

And Bart, lol!
Bart quick-draws his bow and fires at Lord Maravan!
mwk shortbow: 1d20 + 12 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 12 + 1 = 17
miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 65
damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4
mwk shortbow: 1d20 + 12 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 12 + 1 = 27
miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 37
damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Vladek Odradek

Whoops, forgot:
tentacles: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (14) + 13 = 27 Add +5 to this in the case of those already grappled.
damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
You're sure you want to do that, Penelope? You might not even be able to make it in that far....
GM Lithrac
|
By the book, the tentacles would try and grasp her on your initiative count Vladek, so Penelope should be fine for this round. Except the AoO, of course.
Seeing the paladin moving past it, the kyton lashes at her with its chains.
AoO: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 272d4 + 4 ⇒ (2, 4) + 4 = 10
Final showdown - round 5
1. Vladek, Thorgrim, Penelope, Bart, Grimnir, Kayluss
2. Kyton (0), Lord Maravan (31)
Vladek Odradek

Don't forget they've taken an additional 6 damage this round (or at least Lord Maravan has).
Kayluss
|
Finally free to unleash a full attack Kayluss lashes out at the remaining kyton.
Attack 1: 1d20 + 15 - 3 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 15 - 3 + 1 = 28
Damage: 2d8 + 7 + 6 ⇒ (4, 1) + 7 + 6 = 18
Attack 2: 1d20 + 10 - 3 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 10 - 3 + 1 = 13 nope
Attack Haste: 1d20 + 15 - 3 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 15 - 3 + 1 = 18 nope
Kayluss
|
Sorry for that. Not that it matters but since I have blind fight now I'd roll twice.
Grimnir Foehammer
|
Grimnir moves up to Lord Maravan and takes a swing.. Continueing rage and activating bane..
1d20 + 24 ⇒ (16) + 24 = 40
Dam: 4d6 + 32 ⇒ (6, 6, 5, 2) + 32 = 51
Miss: 1d100 ⇒ 96
GM Lithrac
|
With a messy, monstrous blow, Grimnir severs Lord Maravan's head, bringing your quest to an end. You have no trouble dealing with the remaining kyton and recovering the Shadow Obelisk, though in the seconds to come, the Cairn shows obvious signs of crumbling. You hasten towards the exit, Kayluss even helping the poor brainwashed Telendrak to save his life out of that dreadful place. Once outside, you are at last able to enjoy a well-earned victory! The way back to the Grand Lodge is uneventful, though you're glad to have Golbrier as a guard to avoid the Kuthonite patrols on your way out of that country.
Aram Zey proves to be less arrogant and impossible than he usually is when you bring him the Shadow Obelisk, and he tells you that the Blakros familiy is pleased with your success as well.
This is the end of this adventure; I hope you enjoyed it! Chronicle Sheets will be issued shortly in the Discussion thread. Thanks for playing!

Bart lets out a sigh of relief as the ritual is disrupted. "Well, that was a doozy! I think I'll need to pick up a wand or two for situations like that."
Thanks GM! Glad I got to stretch Bart's legs and throw a dagger or two! Always a good time when I get to use my Underhanded ability to do a marginal amount of damage, haha!
