One of the robed figure mumbles something about Outside... before silencing himself as if interrupted in his speech.
DM Kludde |
Then acolytes act strangely, as is some force, something mental, is holding them back, but they put up no further resistance.
On a moon-glass outcropping, high up in the tower, an opening is covered by a polished lid of obsidian. The heavy lid is operated with a nearby mechanism, and slides away to reveal a 100 foot deep shaft, straight down, its sides perfectly polished, without any foothold.
You'll need some form of flight to move down, but that doesn't seem to be a problem with your group
A natural cavern opens up here, its ceiling stretching to a height of over fifty feet. A wide circular hole occupies the center of the ceiling, surrounded by a ring of fanglike stalactites. Two shorter, narrower passages lead away from the cavern to the northwest and southwest, and a fifteen-foot-tall shelf lies on the eastern wall.
Amsheagar |
Amsheagar watches the tame foe. "Is he under some sort of mind altering drug, or just loyal...." he goes ahead and moves around the room, looking outside at one point before returning to the group.
"Someone tie him up?"
Nalshene |
"I do not know, my friend. I carry no rope, either. Leave him be, let's go down there and see what's going on in that cavern."
Nalshene will cast fly on Narshala and on anyone else who needs it.
Amsheagar |
Amsheagar sighs, "I can carry one person", he says before turning into a giant eagle.
Can you cast fly on my Treant outside, so he can come with us?
DM Kludde |
That treant is at best going to make a nice stopper for this glass shaft
At the low end of the obsidian pipe, a natural cavern opens up, its ceiling stretching to a height of over fifty feet. A wide circular hole occupies the center of the ceiling, surrounded by a ring of fanglike stalactites. Two shorter, narrower passages lead away from the cavern to the northwest and southwest, and a fifteen-foot-tall shelf lies on the eastern wall.

DM Kludde |
Glaurung reacts to the new presence by stabbing it. Pad wonders if the worms would be hurt by fire, something that Nalshene can attest to: these are Somalcygots, strange aberrations that bury through rock. They're immune to acid and cold, but fire hurts them normally.
Pad casts a haste spell. (I'm curious where that fireball goes, taking line of sight into account.)
You point your finger and determine the range (distance and height) at which the fireball is to burst. A glowing, pea-sized bead streaks from the pointing digit and, unless it impacts upon a material body or solid barrier prior to attaining the prescribed range, blossoms into the fireball at that point. An early impact results in an early detonation. If you attempt to send the bead through a narrow passage, such as through an arrow slit, you must “hit” the opening with a ranged touch attack, or else the bead strikes the barrier and detonates prematurely.

Fire: Characters at risk of catching fire are allowed a DC 15 Reflex save to avoid this fate. If a character's clothes or hair catch fire, he takes 1d6 points of damage immediately. In each subsequent round, the burning character must make another Reflex saving throw. Failure means he takes another 1d6 points of damage that round. Success means that the fire has gone out—that is, once he succeeds on his saving throw, he's no longer on fire.
GFS: This spell functions as flaming sphere, except it deals 6d6 points of fire damage to any creature it strikes. Any creature that fails its save against the sphere catches on fire. If a creature catches on fire, the DC to extinguish the flames is equal to the DC of this spell.

The tunnel now cleared of the strange infestation, the group moves on.
Do you want to go north or south?
DM Kludde |
Two doorways open into a huge cylindrical chamber. Above rises an arched ceiling, while runes are etched into the lunar glass floor below. A set of porphyry steps carved with obscene acts spirals along the inner wall of the room, granting access to the northern egress and the floor below. Books fill every inch of the walls from floor to ceiling.
The stairway is not connected to this level, but the bookshelves should be straightforward to climb (DC 10 Climb).
Jebediah Heliotrope |
Jebediah grins toothily at the carvings, before turning his attention to the bookshelves.
Perception 'Take 10' - 45, plus a Detect Magic scan of the room (assuming that stepping in doesn't provoke a combat, of course).
Nalshene |

I will hope to catalogue every one of them if we have time to do so... do any of you have a portable hole or other large extraplanar storage device that we could store all of these in? The society could benefit from the knowledge, to be sure."
Appraise to notice any particularly amazing books: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18
DM Kludde |
Every single tome in the lines upon lines of books has near-legendary status. So much so, that it is hard for Nalshene to find a particular one that stands out. Volume of lore, spellbooks from the Arcanamirium, Unknown spells of Great Might, Philosophies of the Whispering Tyrant.
Opening but one of the book shows the true content of the library: where the books seems intact from the outside, the contents have been utterly defaced, destroying the content. Ripped pages, blackened text and shredded vellum - each book has been meticulously treated so as to utterly eradicate any knowledge found within.
DM Kludde |
Descending by the staircase, the group makes its way to another chamber. Manacles and chains hang from the ceiling of this cylindrical chamber at varying heights, though each set is at least thirty feet off the ground. Two doorways exit the room, one to the south and the other the northwest; each is placed high in the walls and shaped like an open demonic mouth. Three balconies at varying heights look down upon the scene, while embedded in the floor is a great metal cage with a human-sized opening shaped like a hungry mouth with a lolling tongue.
Five of the six sets of cold iron manacles hold imprisoned celestial creatures—three dead hound archons, and a decapitated leonal. The corpses have all been horribly mutilated, many of their wounds taking the form of vile insults or defamations scrawled in Abyssal. One set of manacles holds a creature that is still alive - a creature upper half angel-winged woman, lower half snake.
She hangs, suspended by her wrists, from the ceiling at a height of 40 feet.
