Durgan Goldbrow Grimstone |
"The path and chamber are complete, hidden behind the nameplate of the requested aspirant and guarded by the word you requested. Fimbrik will add more."
"So we should probably head over to the shrine of the fallen and see if we can find one for Hollis "Evil Grin" Thorne. Or an aspirant with the attributes he had written on the wall of names."
Samildanach The Dread |
Samildanach joins his companions by the roaring fire place and listens intently to the message accessed by Janira, the half-orc gives the Halfling a wave of farewell as she passes out of the Wisp and on to her parent's home. The fire was comfortable and the ale passable but he did not wish to become complacent here.
"I suppose Durgan has the right of it, the Shrine seems to be the best place to investigate next."
GM Aerondor |
There is an odd note to the streets of Absalom.
The rain continues, but as you head towards the Shrine of the Failed, you notice a gradual increase in the number of people. Wrapped up against the cold rain, still they come, first in ones and twos, but before long in larger numbers.
You get to the great plaza near the Cathedral, and a throng has started to gather. You hear the name of Sir Reinhart, mentioned again and again. It would seem his attempt on the Test of the Starstone is about to happen.
Normally the shrine is guarded, but today the guards and priests seem to be joining the crowds in the rain, eager perhaps to glimpse the last mortal moments of a new god...or the latest addition to their edifice.
While most of the doors are locked, the team quickly finds a set of stairs leading down into the Shrine.
And moving right along, while the crowds distract the guards and taking your chance to get out of the rain.
The stairs lead down into a large chamber. This monumental chamber stretches eighty feet from end to end, with a ceiling suspended thirty feet from the floor by great pillars. Seven arched passages lead to humble rooms, each of which contains a polished stone altar dedicated to one of the failed aspirants who attempted the Test of the Starstone.
Quickly looking at the side chambers, they are all very similar.
Each of these chambers contains a small stone altar to one of the failed aspirants. Each altar stands upon a raised dais and bears a small brass nameplate identifying the aspirant and the would-be-god’s areas of interest.
Anti clockwise from the stairs they hold shrines with a simple plaque.
Demuren: Sought the jade idol of ten thousand faces. Now but another sacrifice to the charau-ka of the Mwangi.
Gobru: Respectfully resigned after losing a friend. Lost to a life among the fish and bountiful sea.
Mellag: Survived the horrors of Nemret Noktoria. Returned to rot from the inside.
Oggo: Traveled to distant Jalmeray. Failed to maintain the necessary Sixteen Poses.
Yepyari: Followed the last Linnorm King to Valenhall. Lost at sea, last seen in a great tornado
Muted God: Wrote in solitude for 101 days. Lived a long life of silence and serenity.
Silmor: Fought up all but one step of the Storval Stairs. Blade shattered at an inopportune moment.
Durgan Goldbrow Grimstone |
Durgan consults his notes regarding the three names from the Wall of Names and points to the shrine dedicated to the Muted God.
"That matches up with what they wrote for Hollis, whose name we got from the gnome's house."
Omrijka |
Omrijka makes a careful study of the muted God shrine
takes twenty on perception fo 25 total
Samildanach The Dread |
Samildanach frowns as he thinks over the note they found in the Gnome's strange home. He concedes to Durgan's suggestion with a nod.
"Arkath said the plaque you wished and the Gnome had Hollis' name on the paper, so that sounds like a solid place to start. Didn't the Gnome say something about 'Wiffle' on their note too? Mayhaps we have to find the tunnel first."
The Half orc waits for Om to finish searching the alcove, knowing her to have a keener eye than his own.
GM Aerondor |
Omrijka is pretty sure there is a hidden door on the western side of the room. But can't figure out a way to open it.
Samildanach looks at the name plate. With a bit of fiddling he realizes it can slide to one side. Behind it there is a chalk board.
By the way, there is an updated map for you all
Durgan Goldbrow Grimstone |
Durgan walks up to the chalkboard. "WIFFLE!"
Durgan Goldbrow Grimstone |
Durgan didn't write on the chalkboard. He yelled the word at the chalkboard.
Durgan Goldbrow Grimstone |
Intimidate the chalkboard: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
If nothing happens when Durgan yells at the chalkboard, he shrugs, fishes out a piece of chalk from his belt pouch, and writes the word 'wiffle' on the chalkboard in chalk.
GM Aerondor |
The chalkboard either doesn't respond to words, or maybe its creator had something against dwarvish accents.
Luckily it doesn't appear to have anything against dwarvish chalk-writing. As Durgan writes Wiffle on the board an illusion covering the secret door vanishes and the group watches in amazement as a section of the wall swings backwards.
A passage leads into darkness.
Durgan Goldbrow Grimstone |
Durgan peers into the darkness, trusting his dwarven darvision to allow him to see a fair way.
He then takes a moment to examine the entrance to the passage for traps.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27 +2 if stonecunning applies.
Samildanach The Dread |
With the passage opened before them, Samildanach shrugs and draws his dark metal Trident, weighing the balance before stepping into the tunnel, his naturally attuned vision meaning the darkness of the tunnel is not debilitating.
"I bet there are answers to our riddles in this cave, and possibly more tiddles to be answered, but let us press on so we can rest before a roaring fire"
Durgan Goldbrow Grimstone |
Durgan looks behind at the members of the team that are lagging behind.
"Care to join us?"
Omrijka |
"I dunno I hear Tiddles can be a bit snouty when he's not been fed. You kou know how wizards familiars can be" Despite her words Omrijka advances into the cave with glaive at the ready.
I appreciated Durgan shouting at the chalkboard
Durgan Goldbrow Grimstone |
Do the people whose tokens are way back intend to be so far away?
Omrijka |
Omrijka whispers back to Durgan "Tell dem slow wagons there's a light down here
Durgan Goldbrow Grimstone |
Durgan whispers Omrijka's message back behind him.
Durgan Goldbrow Grimstone |
When Omrijka moves forward Durgan attempts to move stealthily behind her.
Stealth: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
GM Aerondor |
Moving things along.
The tunnels twist and turn a bit, but end up in another hidden study.
Two in one day!
Move yourselves up to E4
Several desks are arranged along the northern and eastern edges of this small stone alcove. Whereas the stonework leading to this chamber is rough, the walls in the alcove are polished. A single gem rests among the neatly filed papers on the desk, emitting a soft luminescence that brightens the small room.
Unfortunately, sitting in the middle of the room is what appears to be a large bonfire, but one that burns without any obvious fuel.
Samildanach The Dread |
Feeling the heat grom ahead, Samildanach hurries down the tunnel and into the room, cursing fouly under his breath as he witnesses the scene before him, it would appear that eithet they weren't subtle enough in their investigations, or someone else was interested in the rengade's work.
"Hell's teeth! Gozreh, I beseech thee to quench this roaring pyre!"
Cast Create Water on the bonfire, can't move myself right now ^^
GM Aerondor |
"Phizz..."
The bonfire turns, and starts to move towards the group.

reflex: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
Samildanach curses as the elementalstrikes him, but manages to brush the embers off his damp coat before it bursts into flames. Hefting his Trident, he lunges at the creature.

Durgan draws a one of the many weapons which dangle from his person, a cold iron kama. Then he strikes at the flame creature and shuffles forward to make room for his companions to combat the creature.
Cold Iron Kama: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13 Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Sam's trident strikes the fire-creature, causing it further harm.
