I am considering a few things. One would be to get up beacon of luck. It is a personal spell, so I can fervor cast it. I could then go in, or perhaps go all out casting this round win a blessing of fervor and some self-buffing (using my corset of delicate moves to get another swift action). This would likely be used for shield of faith. I am guessing we need to free the Sages, or break their scarabs, first, as well.
Another idea would be for you to fortune hex me, so I can get double rolls on my skill checks.
I am sure this is about to get much worse, too.

Ardelaneu will try to drop good hope and start smiting.

Seldanna, you can Identify Madam Tahari as a Ghost, a Malevolent undead with the ability to possess targets, but most importantly being Incorporeal! Additionally, you recognize that it isn't a spell exactly that is Sickening the Good Aligned members of the party, but the pure outpouring of Evil.
Aryana laughs as Pratvah's coils squeeze right through her. Floating back five feet, she laughs as the Amethyst glows. Without even so much as lifting a finger, or speaking a word, a Dazing Flaming Sphere pops into existence on top of Pratvah on the Magic Carpet.
Incorporeal, so not worried about the AoO from Pratvah! Ref DC 20 Negates: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 1, 4) = 12+dazed
With another thought, a burst of sparkles erupt near Seldanna, Kan-yeh and Gunari. The Quickened Glitterdust coats everything in a fine spray of Scorched Gold flecks. Will Save DC 20 or Blinded for Gunari, Kan-yeh and Seldanna.
Finally, the Onyx gem glimmers with dark energy, as Tahari gestures again, a cloud of Green Mist rolling over the ground away from her. You can easily identify a Cloudkill when you see one. Khash, Kan-yeh and Jaswinder, you guys are in the cloud. Con Damage, Fort DC 23 for Half: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Additionally, the Ritual is over. Spells are no longer at risk for causing Feedback! Good luck!

Most of the posts I found were from 2013 or 2014, and nothing newer, so it's possible a newer edition removed this language, but HERE are two quotes referencing "Likewise, its spells or spell-like abilities deal only half damage to corporeal creatures".
My guess is that this boss *seems* powerful because GMs aren't going by the idea that incorporeal can only affect corporeal half of the time.

We all still have Life Bubble on, so the cloudkill cannot affect us.
will DC20 w/ luck: 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 14 + 2 = 27
Jaswinder, Pratvah doesn’t have magic fang?

He then says, ”Ardelenau, can you claim the onyx jewel? Your talents see right up that ones alley! Seldanna, you or Khash might then want to claim the spinel jewel, since you both know so many languages.”

Khash gasps and wheezes from the gas
Fort Save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
Cool, either 2 or 4 con damage.
Khash uses withdraw to move around the edge of the room (his base speed increases to 45 for this) in anticipation of using the SPINEL Jewel (Mnesoset) next round.
I'm assuming it's 4 Con damage. He's down to 4 hp after the unavoidable 10d6 to the entire dungeon because "lol reasons." If he dies, DNR.
Gunari Maximoff

No, Khash is immune to the poison. First, he has delay poison, and second, he has life bubble. So, no con damage.
Seldanna Marzanna

WILL DC20: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
Seldanna just manages to withstand the effects of Tahari's Glitterdust spell and looks around the room, taking in the chaos and desperation of their situation. So many pressing needs and dangers and so little time to do anything about them.
Fighting off panic, the young witch hears Gunari's barked commands and instinctively listens to them without questioning their wisdom...at least it got her doing something. Hopefully if she just keeps moving and trying then this will all work out somehow! Reaching out and touching the warpriest, she sends a wave of good fortune towards him.
Fortune Hex on Gunari. I think you'll find it only helps with one roll and you've got to announce it up front. Good Luck!
Thinking that Gunari may be planning on trying to help Tahonikepsu, Seldanna resists the almost overwhelming urge to help the Time Dragon herself. The bond she feels with the creature is a strong one, but perhaps she is needed elsewhere. Rushing towards the nearest other Sage, Seldanna heads towards Sinuhotep's Mindscape and dives in!
Gunari Maximoff
|
So, not as good as "bit of luck" -- but I'll make use of it, I am sure. It will last 2 rounds, though.
Receiving the boost from Seldanna, Gunari exclaims, "By the Light of the Starstone!" He calls upon the blessings of the Drunken Hero, using fervor to cast beacon of luck (as a swift action)
He then enters the mindscape of Tahonikepsu!
Gunari sees the despondant sage, and casts unbreakable heart on her! Hoping that the +4 to saves will help either on my skill checks, or something
"Tahonikepsu! You are needed! The jeweled sages are lost without your help, and the plagues of Aryana Tahari will sweep over Golarian in her unholy vengeance. Spread your wings and fly into your Draconic glory, that all may see your awesomeness and be gladdened! Besides, I am sure you owe me a drink!" calls out Gunari, trying to get the diamond sage out of her funk.
I am unsure if the sickened is in effect in the mindscape, so i am assuming that it is. If not, add 2 to the results.
diplomacy w/hex: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (3) + 19 = 22
diplomacy reroll: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (17) + 19 = 36
He sees the dragon lift its mighty head, but still she does not rise.
"Diamond Sage! The Scarab Sages voted you into their leadership because they had faith in you! Do not fall prey to the misery that Tahari would make this world if we are defeated! Rise up! FLY!!!"
diplomacy w/hex: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (11) + 19 = 30

Thanks for the buffs reminders. I'm at 22 hp then. Not horrible. Is there any chance Khash would have known he wouldn't be able to cast spells for over an hour? If so he'd use his own mage armor so he's not left defenseless.
| GM Chie |
Khash, that seems reasonable.
Hey Gunari! Making 3 checks is a Full Round Action! I'll either give you the Spell (providing a +2 bonus to your checks next round) or the checks, Your choice.
For the case of Incorporeal spells, I'm guessing there has been an Errata since 2014, or perhaps that is a Specific exception? Both are from the Advanced Players guide, so perhaps we should bring that up as an FAQ. That being said, I'm going to continue running as is.
Tahonkepsu's eyes change from the Bright White to an Obsidian black, with a silver sheen around the outside edge. "STAY OUT OF THEIR MINDS!" she roars, before turning to Gunari. Ripping into his Unattended body, she finds little resistance. 18 damage (Slashing and Magic, if it matters!)

slight retcon based on GM statement...

For the case of Incorporeal spells...I'm going to continue running as is.
That's understandable. Hopefully it gets clarified better for 2.0. I personally don't run incorporeal that way but have seen it run your way before.
Regardless of how GMs run it, I wonder how the author intended it to be run? Will be interesting to read through the GM Discussion thread after playing through this.
My guess is that's why this scenario has such a deadly reputation. Hopefully this difference doesn't result in ours ^_^

Thank goodness for that extend rod. The damage from earlier, does it bypass all DR, even DR/-?
Will Save vs Glitterdust: 1d20 + 9 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (17) + 9 + 2 - 2 = 26
Glitter covers the Zenj, who looks between the ghostly woman and her more corporeal companion with a grin that might as well be a snarl.
"Ya give Kan-Jeh a moment Tahari. Da loa calls for ya little slave's head first" he taunts, before racing up to the strange creature. "LET MAYTR' KALFUH TAKE YA" he shouts, as a dark, tall cowled man of black energy seems to ooze out of the bloodrager, only to point a fancy looking walking stick at the creature, seconds before Kan-Jeh's earthbreaker makes contact with the thing's sternum.
Raging, the corporeal thing is my hated target.
Earthbreaker vs Maybe another Graveknight??? (I collect them at this point)(PA, FF, HT, Rage, Vital Strike) - Sickened + Heroism: 1d20 + 18 + 2 + 2 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 18 + 2 + 2 - 2 + 2 = 37
Damage: 4d6 + 10 + 9 + 3 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (2, 3, 5, 2) + 10 + 9 + 3 + 5 - 2 = 37
| GM Chie |
Kan-yeh, think of it as Untyped damage. Like Energy damage!
Kan-yeh rushes over to Ermias, his Earthbreaker denting the Golden Dragonscale armor. His eyes wracked with Sadness and suffering, he looks up at Kan-Yeh and wails, "I have no control brother. Please, end my suffering!" before his eyes glow Black, with a silver sheen along the edges. A Rictus grin overtakes the once mournful expression, before swinging his flail at Kan-yeh's hands, bashing his knuckles and forcing him to drop his Earthbreaker.
Disarm vs Kan-Yeh: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (9) + 22 = 31 Hope you didn't need that!
"How cute! Thinking you can defeat Tahari. I will CRUSH YOUR SKULL AND DRINK THE BLOOD! FOR AHRIMAN!" Stepping between Khash and Kan-yeh, his eyes shine with Malice as he looks suddenly empowered. Smite Good VS Kan-Yeh!
Almost as if his call demanded it, a massive Anthropomorphic Lioness appears in a burst of black flame. A massive roar erupts from her fanged jaws, as Waves of Fatigue wash over Gunari, Seldanna and Kan-yeh.
Ok, that should be All the player on the map.

As the arrows fly toward the air toward Tahari, the Diamond next to Gunari Flashes, as a crystalline barrier forms around her spectral form. All three arrows turn before striking her, clattering to the ground below.
Surprised for a moment that Pratvah rolled off the carpet, Tahari floats away from the Winged Paladin, before pointing a finger at Ardelenau, a sickening green ray making a direct line toward the symbol of the Inheritor in the center of his Breastplate.
Quickened Ray of Enfeeblement Touch: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Strength Penalty DC 21 Fort for half: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
The Onyx gem flashes again, as Tahari flicks her wrist toward Khash'Telek. Khash suddenly begins to feel sick, the Persistant Contagion grabbing hold of his lungs, and squeezing. Fort save DC 24, Roll twice, take the worse
Finally, Tahari gestures toward the fallen Earthbreaker from Kan-Yeh and throws her hand violently toward the cloud of green mist. As if propelled by her rage alone, the massive hammer flies through the cloud before hitting the wall with a Sickening CRUNCH. "Did your little order Really think you could destroy me? You will regret facing me in my own sanctum! I will RELISH in watching the light fade from your eyes!" Telekinesis, per the Ghost Ability. I have placed a token for your Hammer, if you would like to retrieve it. Telekinesis Rounds: 1d3 ⇒ 3
Ermias is not quite as lucky, as the Snake's coils wrap around the Graveknight, cracking bone and squeezing chain. While powerful, her flexing muscles are not as effective as you would have hoped.
Gunari's rousing speech, combined with the Unbreakable Heart, cause her to break out of her mindscape, shaking off the obsidian sheen to her eyes. "Thank you Gunari, I knew I could count on you!" she adds, before roaring menacingly at Tahari.
Her attacks always hit, and deal the respective damage. If forced to make a save, she always makes it.

Seldanna dives into the mindscape of Sinuhotep
Diplomacy, Knowledge (arcana or religion), Perform (oratory), or Sense Motive
The witch is disturbed by the visions of the Amethyst Sage being corrupted by Tahari and tries to understand the sage's motives, hoping it will help her convince and cajole him back into consciousness.
What was in that ancient jar that the sage would abandon his companion to obtain it? What dark ritual was he conducting that required the heart of a sphinx? What hold did Tahari have over him?

Tahonikepsu looks down on the Varisian, and asks, "Now that you have freed me, would you be able to do the same to the other sages?"
Gunari nods, grinning, as this was his plan all along.
The dragon picks up Gunari, flies above Torch and Amenopheus, and sets Gunari back down between them. "Now save them," she orders.
"Thank you," says Gunari.
To the other other two, he says in Varisian, "Vin dulce de orz! Nu putem avea asta. Cum putem bea prieteni dacă sunteți pierduți în mintea voastră? Va trebui să rezolvăm asta."

So much good dice rolling... Hopefully the staic is stupidly high enough. If the 30 fails but the 34 succeeds, then I'll use my GM re-roll for the 2nd natural 1.
| GM Chie |
Let's see what toys I have left:
Sinuhotep: Tahari can cast her spells without verbal or somatic components.
Tahonikepsu: Tahari gains 100 temporary hit points at the beginning of each round. These last for 1 round and stack with other sources of temporary hit points, such as vampiric touch.
Torch: The saving throw DCs of Tahari’s spells with the curse or disease descriptor increase by 5.
Padrym: Tahari can cast spells with a casting time of 1 standard action as though their casting time were 1 move action.
Amenopheus: When attempting any saving throw, Tahari can roll twice and take the better result. If she also draws power from the spinel sage jewel, she instead automatically succeeds at all saving throws.
Mnesoset: When attempting any saving throw, Tahari can roll twice and take the better result. If she also draws power from the sapphire sage jewel, she instead automatically succeeds at all saving throws.
Dhiara: Tahari’s spells and abilities affect her targets as though her alignment were neutral or neutral evil, whichever is more advantageous to her.
Ok, so the Temps didn't do anything for me, I have to actually roll saves now, and I need to use Verbal and Somatic? I can work with this.
I believe she'll have to touch me for Contagion. AC 28 vs ghosts.
Oooo, you're right! Let's call it a Reflex Save VS Dazing Flaming Sphere instead? She could do that with her Move Action instead? Reflex: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27 No damage, no worries!
So much good dice rolling... Hopefully the staic is stupidly high enough. If the 30 fails but the 34 succeeds, then I'll use my GM re-roll for the 2nd natural 1.
Sounds good! Mark your re-roll used, and we'll free another sage. This is... Limiting my abilities for shenanigans!
Taking the cue from Gunari, Seldanna and Khash begin entering mindscapes, subsequently freeing Sinohotep from Tahari's grip. As the mindscapes are dispelled, the motes of glowing light floating begin winking out, the colors matching the sages that have been released.
Sinuhotep stands feebly, shaking off the mental control before looking to Seldanna. "It is Embarrassing that I let her affect me this much. Let us work together to defeat her!"
So... Gunari has Tahonikepsu, Seldanna gets Sinuhotep, but they both would have acted before being saved. Sounds like Next round Activities!

Jaswinder looks at his bow in disbelief.
"Well I am not sure what foul defense that was, but I have other tricks up my sleeves!"
Jaswinder pulls out his darkwood pungi from earlier (move action) and starts playing a rhythmic and upbeat Vudrani melody (standard action).
INSPIRE COURAGE!
+1 Attack/Damage (competence bonus)

"Um, Jaswinder, aren't you going to keep firing?" asks Gunari. "I mean, the tune is ok, but I'd rather hear the thunka thunka of your arrows penetrating the ghost or that leonid big guy!"
Paladin Ardelaneu Zakath

"Did you see how much good they did?" Gamin chirps in. "Bounced off her like swizzle sticks!"
Gunari Maximoff

"If we don't keep trying we have lost already!" replies the ever chipper Gunari. "And I don't much like dying. Just ask that T-Rex... and the Rukh. Neither could keep me in their belly!"

With Tahonkepsu, Sinuhotep and Mnesoset free, the Diamond Shield around Aryana cracks and shatters, as the glowing Yellow and Purple wisps revolving around her head wink out.
Now that these sages have been freed, Tahari is less Bonkers. That being said, she still has some tricks up her sleeve
Refocusing her attention on the assailants weakening her, she steps backward, gripping her amulet in her ghostly hands. It glows for an instant, before she gestures toward Khask'telek. The Greater Contagion from her Arcane Bond grips Khash'telek, squeezing the life out of him. Fort Save DC 31 or contract a Really Nasty disease. Fading Light Disease: 1d2 ⇒ 1 Negative Levels
The Onyx gem on the podium flashes, as she casts Suffocation on Gunari, sucking the fresh air from his lungs! Fort DC 25 or Begin to suffocate!

fort save vs Suffocation DC25: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (20) + 13 = 33 only staggered
Ok, fine... since I cannot do a full round to free Amenopheus...
Gunari, unable to take the time to free the Sapphire Sage due to his gasping for breath, he calls upon the power of the Drunken Hero! "Friends, accept the blessings of the Lucky Drunk, that we be victorious in our adventure!"
Casts blessing of fervor. She is marked as being 15' in the air, so I do not provoke. If this is wrong, he'll cast on the defensive.
He takes the AC and saves - figured into my tag line.
Then, he again calls upon the power of the Drunken Hero, and fervor casts divine favor, (granting him +4 to hit and damage for 1 minute)!
Remember, Khash, you can burn the beacon of luck to roll twice take the higher!!
