Nightflier's Midnight Game Thread

Game Master nightflier

Set in the grim world of Aryth, Nightflier's Midnight is a game that speaks of almost futile hope that shines against the darkness.

A reedy voice sounds from the shadows.

"Naughty bird! You wanted to take my children from me! I know you ravens, you are all thieves!"

Raven Spiritual Channeler 5

"What's yer point? When you raise 'em t' act like assh*les you shouldn't be surprised when someone takes 'em from you. You should feel lucky my boss ain't here. He gets a little bent about child abuse."

Dark Archive

"You know, raven, I haven't had a nice big bowl of chicken stew for centuries. And in this accursed realm there are no chickens. Just sayin'..."

The darkness at the edge of light becomes less murky and the shadows seem to retreat. The globe of light that guides you starts to bob in the air, and to move slowly ahead, as if the obstacles have been removed...

Raven Spiritual Channeler 5

"Hold on, let me get this straight. First your little hooligans attack us, and you call me names for hauling 'em up short. Then when I call you on your sh*tty parenting skills, you threaten to eat me? Lady, I'm pretty sure you just proved my point. It obviously ain't yer kids that are the problem. And if you're going to loom in the shadows and try to be scary, you're doing it all wrong. Seriously, arguing with talking animals doesn't do much for your credibility."

Male Dorn Barbarian/Lv1, Wildlander/Lv1, Fighter/Lv3

Darren let out a sigh of relief as the Spirits withdrew, then scowled as he noticed the bone deep chill where the child like spirits had hit him. He turns to Gilian.
"Nothing serious, though those spirits did leave their mark."

He then looks at Muni, and speaks in an almost apologetic tone of respect.
"I had thought of you as little more than a talking bird with visions of grandeur, but now I see that you truly are one of the ancestor spirits. This creature would be wise to not cross you."

Raven Spiritual Channeler 5

"Guess I shoulda just called up one of yer grandparents and had 'em poke you in the eye to make my point when we met? Birds don't lie unless they're hungry. 'Course, we're hungry a lot. Nevermind. Let's see what Worlds Best Mother wants."

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

"You'd find him hard to swallow, an unfit choice for your final meal."

Intimidate1d20 + 17 ⇒ (17) + 17 = 34

It is the calm assuredness in Ilona's voice coupled with the glint of humor and violence that makes her words utterly terrifying.

Dark Archive

Whatever or whoever was in the shadows beyond the light, it seems that she is gone now. The voice was female, that is sure, but the light once again shines on the ordinary cobbled road and there is no trace of that eerie forest that tried to envelop you.

The guiding light gently floats down the road, eventually reaching a large crossroads. There are at least eight different roads converging, with a small round square at the center. In the middle of the square an empty fountain stands, topped with a large statue. Only bottom half of the statue remains, however. Whatever was depicted, it had goat-like two legs and small goat tail above them.

There is a strange runic inscription marring the fountain.

Sky still hasn't made a successful save yet...so not sure what his status might be.

Solvistania raises her hand up to halt the group. "I must check this further." She approaches the fountain, chanting softly to herself.

You have reached the fountain hours after the encounter with the drekavci. So, you are OK.

Cast Detect Magic
Knowledge Lore 1d20+15

Solvistania:
There is a lingering aura of enchantment on the stone, but it is distorted by the surrounding emanations.

Was your Knowledge check made as a part of the spell, to determine the type of the magic aura, or to gain knowledge of the fountain or the statue?

Nightflier:
It depends on whether there was a magical aura or not. Since she detected a magical aura, then use the previous check for the spell, and this will be for the knowledge learned: Knowledge Lore 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (19) + 15 = 34

Dark Archive

Solvi:
The aura of magic is week, but you can still sense that the magic was used both in the construction of the fountain and around it at some later time. The magic is of the enchantment variety and you can sense that its purpose was... bringing joy, perhaps.

The type of fountain is similar to certain remains of Elthedar make in the rain forests of Arun. This must be of fey build, but you can not say if the fey in question were true fey, or the ancestors of the beings that would become elves. The runes that are marring the fountain are obviously of Dorn origin. You now little of Dorn magic and history, but you can sense the runes' connection to the cold and the spirits of wrath and rage.

Solvistania studies the runes for several moments, saying nothing as she searches her memory for additional information on the origin.

Finally, she speaks. "These are Dornish in origin. Muni, what do you make of these runes?"

Raven Spiritual Channeler 5

Muni reads dornish, but I'm not sure what to roll here.

Male Dorn Barbarian/Lv1, Wildlander/Lv1, Fighter/Lv3

Hearing Solvistania, Darren moves toward the statue. "I may be able to aid in this.

Knowledge (Lore), but you don't have it on your skills list.

Male Erunsil (Snow Elf) Fighter 5

Though Sky stays withing striking distance of the party, he tends to sit silently on his heels a small distance away, in the shadows.

I must learn to put my time away behind me. I can't let myself be paralyzed by fear. I am back now...and I have responsibilities. What is wrong with me. While I have felt fear before, I never let it keep me from acting... Have I truly returned?

That's because under the new system I only have one secondary skill.

You can buy Secondary Skills the regular way. You just get certain amount of skill points for free, essentially.

Lore 1d20+9

The meaning or significance of the runes escapes you at the moment.

Dark Archive

Anyone else wants to take any actions at the fountain?

Dark Archive

Okay, moving on.

Suddenly, from the murk beyond the crossroads, five glowing globes, identical to yours fly at you with great speed. Before you manage to react, they strike your guiding light and - just for an instant - make one great blindingly bright ball. A moment later, the great ball falls apart into six smaller ones once again, and each of them gently floats away in a different direction...

A snicker and a cackle sounds from beyond the circle of light...

Male Erunsil (Snow Elf) Fighter 5

When everyone else is finished looking at the rune, and ready to move on, Sky approaches the fountain, and investigates the rest of it...How it functioned, was it for water, etc, and the Statue to see if anything is unique about it.

Sky:
The fountain was obviously used for providing refreshment to the travelers. It was obviously built long time ago, possibly before the Fall of Izrador. But it was not dry until recently. By the remains of certain plants, you can tell that the water in the fountain dried up perhaps a year ago.

Solvistania's eyes flash in anger as she sees the group's lifeline shattered by the unknown spirit's pranks. She starts to say something but stops, visibly trying to maintain control of her emotions, her eyes glowing a deep crimson knowing a hostile act would further doom the party to walk aimlessly in the Shadow lands.

If that's possible, Gilian can try to counterspell that effect with dispel magic. Dispel check 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

As the floating balls part again, Gilian hands move in a blur as she tries to counteract the magic cast at their guide.

Dark Archive

Gilian:
Your attempt fails.

You do not know if you were not strong enough to dispel the magic, or if the additional globes are not in fact an effect of a spell.

Dark Archive

What are the actions of the rest of you, guys?

Male Erunsil (Snow Elf) Fighter 5

Sky speaks silently from the rear of the group, as they watch the fireworks display.

"Something is strange here". "Though this fountain is old, it seems as though it only quit flowing within the last year or so". "Something changed that". .

Solvistania glances at Sky'tor, her anger forgotten for the moment. "Interesting...perhaps whoever is behind the mischief here knows of this..." Her voice raises, "Spirit, we wish to talk of this fountain and what caused it to be damaged."

Solvistania's voice echoes through the murk, but no answer comes. Whoever is the culprit, it is gone or watches in silence.

Raven Spiritual Channeler 5

Muni just sighs and ruffles his feathers. "Raise your hand if you didn't see that coming. That way I know who to make fun of."

Dark Archive

The six lights gently float, but each one at the start of a different road...

Just to let you know, there is a way for you to know which light is yours. Not all of you have the chance to so, though. And that is a clue enough. If you can't figure it out, or you fail in your try, than I propose that Gilian rolls d6 and choose a number.

Solvistania gives the raven spirit guide a frosty look, but deigns not to respond verbally. She scans the golden lights and attunes her senses at the glowing lights, each in turn. Once she has figured out which one it is, she will grab it and whisper, "Betwixt and between." to it.

Knowledge Lore, if needed, 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (5) + 15 = 20

Duncan's gaze was on the glowing balls of light the whole time, and as his mind races, trying to remember if he had ever read or heard anything about the foe they are now facing, presumably the old woman the scarecrow warned them about, he also made an attempt to follow their guiding light once it joined the others.

Solvi:
There is a creature called a wisp. Those creatures are essentially globes of light. They were common in marshes, but as with all fey creatures, the coming of Izrador and the fall of Fortress Wall made the scarce. Those creatures were infamous for leading travelers astray. You can't tell which one of the lights is your own, but you are certain that the rest of them are wisps.

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

Ilona snickers at Muni's wisecrack, but speaks in an admonishing tone,
"C'mon Muni, be nice."she says with a grin.

She studies the globes intently for a moment.

Ilona:
As far as you can tell, you are looking at six globes of light...

Solvistania concentrates on the lights and her face dawns with realization. "Theses are wisps...fae originating before the Sundering. They would lead travelers astray for their own purposes, although I suspect mischief lays at the heart of it!"

Dark Archive

Let's move this along. Gilian, please choose a number 1-6.

Raven Spiritual Channeler 5

"Don't suppose anyone bothered checking to see if there was any diference in th' magic auras these things have? Or if one of 'em's particularly more apple shaped than th' others?"

Detect Magic, and take 20 on a perception check to study the lights. 48 total.

If for some reason I can't take 20, here's a roll 1d20 + 28 ⇒ (7) + 28 = 35

Solvistania Elghreah wrote:

"Wait, so they're alive? Was ours alive? How do ya detect if somethin's alive or not? Think we could just blast 'em and look of th' one that doesn't scream? How about divinations to figure out which one isn't trying to kill us?"

If for some reason I can't take 20, here's a roll 1d20+28

Muni:
Your arcane sight reveals to you that one of the glowing globes is different than the others, but before you could study them further, they shuddered in the air, as if they realized what you did, or understood your words, and started to fly at you with great speed.

Good job. 1 FP.

Dark Archive

Almost as soon as Muni finished with his spell, five lights pulsed with angry red light for an instant, and started to fly with great speed towards him. They are so fast that you are caught by surprise and you are not sure if you will have time to react.

Reflex DC 10 to not be caught by surprise and be able to act.

Raven Spiritual Channeler 5

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22

Muni flaps ungracefully away from the charging lights, darting behind Ilona.

"AWK! Blast'em BLAST'EM!!!"

Reflex 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12

Solvistania stares at Muni as if he had grown a third eye. Still, it does not slow her reflexes as she lets her magic fly at one of the red glowing wisps.

Cast Magic Missile at one of the wisps.
Damage 3d4 + 3 + 5 ⇒ (2, 3, 4) + 3 + 5 = 17

I'm gonna roll Initiative. If you don't make the Save, just skip this round.
Sky
Ilona
Solvi
Wisps
Duncan
Gilian
Since Darren left the game, I'm gonna remove one of the wisps as well.
