Mayhaps I can be taken out of this sack for a moment. Miss Meredith would you please collect the Longsword from the sack. That is I, Gamin, the sword that works with Kalkamedes. I see some of you are carrying his things, would you be so kind to put them on their rightful owner. Mr Dwarf unfortunately Kalkamedes's destination is also a mystery to me. I appreciate you not letting any harm come to my friend, and not using those caltrops the elf keeps wanting to pull out, tisk tisk. I figured I would speak up as I have been taken on tour for this errand and my friend's affliction has become concerning.
Leorin Fletcher |
"Ehhhh? The Sword spoke? As for his possessions I'll gladly give the Bracers back to him so long as it keeps him from dying. As for the Elixir I don't believe that he would know how to even use it so I'll keep it and when the time arises make him drink it."
Leorin removes the Bracers of Armor from his wrists and puts them on Kalkamedes' wrists as they were meant to be worn.
Leorin then starts putting on his Leather Armor and after he is finished he helps whoever else needs it putting on their armor.
Meredith Galantra |
I was wrong the whole time. Forgive me, Lady Iomedae, for I had doubt in my heart, but You have led me back to Your Light.
Gently, Meredith pulls Kalkamedes sleeves down and under the ropes, apologizing to their ward as she does so, "Forgive me, Brother, but in the dark I must have missed the bruising and chafing."
After she applies what comfort she can to Kalkamedes, she gathers up her gear and draws the sword, "Well met, Gamin. I am afraid I did not realize that we had a guest with us this entire venture, truly a Blessed companion, at that, Praise be to Her name. You know who I am, obviously, but let me introduce the others."
Pointing to each of her companions, she introduces them to Gamin, "May I introduce one of Erastil's finest, Frederik Nordsson. Over there is Princess Kaydence, of the Half-Elf Gypsies. Here is Leorin Fletcher, freedom fighter for those caught under the boot of tyranny and oppression. The dwarf you've spoken with is Orik Fistbreaker, one of the Society's finest. And the one in the dark over there is Zotu Starshine, a child of Desna. If I may, might I again say how honored it is to meet you, Gamin. I can only imagine what you're feeling concerning Kalkamedes' condition. Is there anything we can do to help further?"
keith goudreau |
Well met indeed! I was going to protest at the use of the caltrops before the large canyon here but someone else spoke up before I did. All my wishes are that he be transported safely to where every he may roam. I could not bear to see any further rope burn on my dear fellow. Do not let me interfere, carry on.
Frederik Nordsson |
Frederick coughs and looks suitably abashed.
"You heard the talking sword-man, people, onward and upward!" Frederick chuckles awkwardly and hoists his gear, ready to move forward.
Who are we still waiting on to mention they're good to move on? Kaydence and Zotu?
keith goudreau |
Was just giving a moment for some role-play with the npc...
Great bands of stars sweep across the cloudless night sky, illuminating a series of game trails that chase through the mountain shrubs and berry bushes. Still finding ways to march headlong into trouble, Kalkamedes next strides into the path of a black bear that is watching over her two cubs and feeding on the several species of berries.
Once the Leorin gets within 20 feet of the unsuspecting bear, she roars with displeasure and attempts to warn him away from her cubs, a gesture that Kalkamedes ignores. The bear is about to charge at the trespassers that threaten her cubs.

Orik Fistbreaker |
Poor Orik of the Slow Reactions, always last on the initiative counter...
Orik readies his shield to protect the sleep walking Kalkamedes and takes his usual place in front of the man, attempting to ward off any bear attacks himself.
He will cover Kalkamedes with his Saving Shield bonus during any combat as long as they stay adjacent.
Frederik Nordsson |
Frederick is instantly conflicted. He has no desire to needlessly kill an innocent animal protecting her cubs. But farm life breeds pragmatism, and he knows that sometimes an animal must be put down, to protect the herd. He moves to put himself between the mother bear and the advancing Kalkamedes. He brings his torch up and starts waving it wildly, attempting to scare the protective momma bear away.
Intimidate with a torch: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Would I possibly get some sort of bonus by using the torch, since animals are naturally afraid of fire?
Meredith Galantra |
"Hopefully there is no reason to harm her. She is just protecting her own. Sorry, Brother, but we need to get you clear before you get any closer. And I apologize to you, as well, Gamin, but I believe a few hits to his dignity, which he will likely not remember when he awakens, is better than lying on the ground, mauled by a bear protecting her cubs."
Once again, Meredith pulls their tethered ward into a grapple in the hopes of dragging him as far from the bear's territory and cubs as possible.
Time to put that CMB to use again. Never thought I'd be using it so much in one campaign. I think I did call us walking into something similar to this, though!
Grapple CMB: 1d20 + 5 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 + 5 = 23
This'll provoke an AoO from Kalkamedes, too. Also, since I'm using the rope, I'm pulling him towards me, so if you can move him to the marked spot on the map, that'd be very helpful. If I did indeed grapple him, that is. Thanks!
And I'm going before Orik, so he should be able to move to an adjacent square after my turn to do his shield protecty thingy, too, on his turn, if he wishes.
Also, I'm assuming that the green vegetation parts of the map are rough terrain, and that the "path's" are normal terrain. If I'm wrong on this, I'd like to move elsewhere.
Leorin Fletcher |
"What's the protocol on wildlife attacks while on a mission for the Society?"
First instinct was to kill it but then again it was because of Runescape that I have that instinct (played back when there was the training island for new people...)
Leorin wont attack until attacked, he tries to keep his distance away from the bears.
Zotu Starshine |
Zotu moves in front of Meridith and Kalkamedes. He takes the long sword off his back. He holds it firmly with both hands. He has a terrible look in his eyes, staring the bear straight in its' face.
"Go friend. Take our guest from here." Zotu says to Meredith, never breaks his sight from the bear.
AoO damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Orik Fistbreaker |
Orik moves to the side of the pinned paladins and does his "shield-protecty thing", standing between the downed do-gooders and the bears.
"Yae got 'im pinned, wee miss? I got yae covered from that grumbly bear, I dae. Yae bae fer gettin' ol' sleepyhead oot o' the way, afore things start tae get a wee bit rough 'ere."
Orik Fistbreaker |
As the bear encounter breaks down into a fight, Orik's first action (if we go to initiatives) will be to move next to Kalkamedes shielding him and adding +2 to the fellow's AC.
He will also ready an attack with his dwarven waraxe versus any bear (or other aggressive creature) that moves within reach of the moving Kalkamedes.
keith goudreau |
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18 Kalkamedes attempt to be free.
Assuming Meredith is trying to pull him via the leash as she has before; keeping him on the path that was previously drawn.
1d20 + 5 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 + 5 = 26
Bear charges, Orik's readied attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Black Bear charge attack: 1d20 + 6 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (9) + 6 + 2 - 2 = 15damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
The Black bear you encounter gives off a warning growl as she prepares to protect her cubs. Frederik, not wanting to orphan the cubs, attempts to intimidate the bear, unfortunately the fire frightens it further into a rage of protecting her young. Kaydence fires an arrow at the beast, just barely missing her mark Zotu does not help much either, the series of exotic chicken clucking and wilderness tactics may be useful in his jungle home but are useless here. Leorin moves forward further trying to keep a clean path. At that point Kalkamedes pulls on the leash trying to break free of the tether but Meredith's iron grip holds true. Orik sensing the impending doom of a charging bear keeps pace with the sleep walker to aid as a shield buffer readying an attack if it is needed. The bear snarls one last time before charging toward Kalkamedes! Orik swings his axe true and finds a bit of flesh to cleave into above its shoulder, the axe divers deep into it's body and Orik can feel the severed muscle and tendons give as he uses as much strength to unbury the axe form the bear's hide. The bear dives past Orik's attempt to aid as a shield wall and it's teeth tear into Kalkamedes back leaving a clump of muscle and shirt in her mouth as she tears back.

Frederick lets out a cry of frustration. It pains him to do so, but farm life is hard - he has learnt to be harder.
He drops his torch to the ground. Taking a quick step back, he expertly unlimbers his bow, notching an arrow in the same movement. He takes careful bead on the mother bear and let's fly.
Dropping torch as free action. Five foot step as move action. +1 BAB allows me to draw a weapon as part of a move action. Within 30 feet gives +1 to hit and damage.

Orik grimaces as the bear strikes the unarmored paladin despite his shield work. His focus remains getting the shield back between teh walker and the beast, but if the opportunity opens, he swings his axe again, trying to end the poor misguided bear's threat.
"Ach, yae bloody beast, get yer wee teeth outta tha' man, and turn an' fight!"
Keep the +2 on AC for Kalkamedes, move action if the moves.and attack as SA.

Frederik sets loose an arrow and it finds the mark right next to where Orik's axe had left a grievous wound. Kaydence follows suit with another deadly arrow that strikes it in the back. Zotu swings his longsword wildly and it misses it's mark.
Kaydence, Shooting a bow while within reach provokes an AOO, and unless you have a feat or special ability to get flanking with a ranged weapon you could not get sneak attack bonus damage. Giving you the benefit of the doubt and moving your character to a safe location to take the shot.

After Leorin makes his amazing move (haven't heard from him in 3 days), Meredith releases the rope (Free Action) and shouts in fury at the bear, "Don't... you... DARE!"
She then charges at the bear, drawing her greatsword in both hands and slams into it, intent on moving the bear away from their sleep-walking charge.
Knowledge(Nature) - Untrained: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Trying to determine why the bear attacked Kalkamedes, and not anyone else that was provoking it. He seems like he'd be the least threatening. Dunno if I'd need Nature or Sense Motive or what for that kind of roll.
Bull Rush: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 5 + 2 = 24
Draws an AoO from the bear
Ooh, looks like Bull beats Bear. If the bear's CMD is 19 or lower, she moves back 10', and I'll follow up.
keith goudreau |
AOO 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Meredith charges and brushes off the claw that harmlessly slaps her armor and pushes the bear away from the sleepwalker!
As for why it is targeting Kalkamedes you could assume it is his magnetic personality.
Mama bear has a 19 CMD so moves back ten feet, believe that is a standard action.
Orik Fistbreaker |
Orik will stay at the side of Kalkamedes, attempting to keep his shield between the bear and the sleeping man. Again, if the bear stays or moves adjacent to him (it appears that way on the roll20 map, but not sure if it's updated for Kalkamedes move) then he swings his axe at the bear as a readied action. Will attack with Power Attack, if applicable.
Move along with KK as Move Action, ready action if bear comes within range and then attack as SA with Power Attack. Priority is on defending the helpless man with the +2 AC bonus, attack is secondary.
Dwarf war axe: 1d20 + 3 - 1 ⇒ (18) + 3 - 1 = 20

Sorry can not get on roll20 to adjust.
The bear charges again, it must sense something unnatural about the prey. Orik swings as the bear charges by him and misses, Meredith swings and a miss, Zotu swings and finds the mark. Orik drives his axe again on the bear as it attacks Kalkamedes. The bear stops and falls into a limp mound of dying mama bear.
Orik's attack of opportunity: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Meredith's attack of opportunity: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

Combat over
Meredith Galantra |
Panting, Meredith rushes back to Kalkamedes to grab hold of the rope, sheathing her greatsword upon her back once again, "Bizarre that the bear would have come after Brother Kalkamedes instead of the actual threats to her cubs... I feel as if something unnatural is at play, here. Well, other than the fact that Brother Kalkamedes keeps wandering off into the night in his sleep, that is. Does anyone have any ideas why she singled him out? Gamin, you've known Brother Kalkamedes for longer than us, perhaps he made an enemy out of this particular bear in the past?"
Frowning as she attempts to bind Kalkamedes wounds as well as she can, she asks desperately, "Also, can anyone help with his wounds? I... I should've been able to protect him better. This is... it's all my fault."
Heal check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
I know a heal check is pointless, it's just for flavor.
Zotu Starshine |
"Yes, the bear is odd. Attack instead of protect it's cubs, strange." Zotu looks behind the dead bear for its cubs. "I will hope the cubs are not rabid." Zotu moves carefully longsword in one hand.
keith goudreau |
Gamin-
You did a fine job protecting him! This is nothing. You should of seen the time he set the trap to catch a group of highwaymen that were targeting these caravans. Lets just say the trap worked fine but the beating he received, busted most his ribs. Passed out for a day right there among the dead we cleaved down for a day and a half, Kalkamedes is no stranger to pain! He can dish it out as well as take the occasional broken bone! For it being your fault, are you making him sleepwalk? Nope not your fault, to let you know I am smiling right now at your kindness, can you tell? That goes for everyone! Please keep my friend safe! You are doing an excellent job!
Zotu- You quickly look at dying mama bear and her cubs and can tell they are not rabid.
Mama bear stabilizes
keith goudreau |
Everyone set...
Over the course of another two hours, the rough, mountainous
scrubland gradually flattens and gives way to thicker copses
of trees sustained by a series of chilly, narrow streams.
Kalkamedes’s trail meanders northward.
The thick trees and ground cover make this area
difficult to navigate, and any squares containing a tree or
brush are treated as difficult terrain. In addition, these
squares grant cover, allowing anyone to use Stealth to
hide.
please take a moment to position yourselves on the map, there is a blue line that is Kalkamede's route of travel so you can plan ahead. You all have one turn of movement and any last minute preparations. I changes Kalkamedes's token so everyone can move him, no grapple checks will be needed if you keep him on the path. Please move his token to where you want it to be when we start.

Something ticks in the back of Fredrerick's mind. Things have gotten a lot more cramped. He whispers to the rest of the group, "Heads up ahead."
So saying he unlimbers his bow one handed, takes a moment to hold his torch between his knees to notch an arrow, holding it in place with his bow hand. He quietly takes the torch back into his hand, ready to drop it as soon as anything untoward occurs.
As he slowly proceeds he takes a moment to peer into the darkness.
Ready an action to drop the torch if anything comes into sight. This should occur before init, right?

The big statue ahead to the left, and all the trees on either side allowing so much cover so close. Its making Freddie nervous. The perception check was to have a look into those corners ahead.
Meredith Galantra |
Meredith looks ahead casually, "I see no difference ahead in the forest than what we've already passed through, though the path broadening out and becoming easier to traverse is a welcome sight. Come, let us see the end of this journey and free Brother Kalkamedes from this malady."
Orik Fistbreaker |
Orik will walk directly in front of Kalkamedes keeping a wary eye out, and with a readied action to jump in front of him with shield if anything comes out of the woods.
