Not really... If we know a lot about fey, undead, outsiders, monstrous humanoids, dragons, magical creatures and whatever and the the description of the creature doesn't match anything we know, then it makes sense to assume it's not one of those things... Either that or the creature is way too powerful (and why would such creature be lurking in the sewers?) or unusually rare (and if it's so rare, it's probably not it). It also makes sense to assume that a creature living in an uderground dungeon might be familiar to those who study dungeon-dwelling creatures.


Whatevers :P, how much cost to ask that question to a sage?

The group descends into the sewer, Jorriko leading the way in the hopes of finding the creature's trail, and Korak bringing up the rear on lookout. I assume.

Jorriko quickly tracks the thing back to where it killed the thugs, but loses its trail for a moment as he tries to follow it further.

New trail, new Survival check, basically.

After about 15 minutes, he reaches the end of the trail, a circular hub connecting 4 sewer tunnels, which appears to be the thing's "nest". Bones and other refuse litter the area, though not all of the junk appears to be worthless, at least to Jorriko's trained eye.

Jorriko goes digging through a pile of refuse, seeing something shiny in the largest pile.

He grabs a hold of it and pulls it out...only to notice that it is attached to a tail.

The creature they had come to slay rears up, covered in fungus and other trash, and opens its mouth widely.

The group starts feeling uneasy, almost nervous the closer they are to the creature.

Everybody takes a -2 on attack and damage rolls. Jorriko's turn, followed by Korak, then Jo, then the Cloaker again.

Yeah, no save. Jorriko got high enough on the check that you can basically just have a peek at the statblock if you want. Check the "Unnerve" feature of the Moan.

As for distance, I assumed you were investigating some other part of the room, so place yourself however you want. But the room isn't that big (maybe 50 feet on a side, but the tunnels stretch farther.).

Jorriko swings at the creature, but fails to line up a proper blow in his haste, the swing harming nothing more important than a few stray bones beside the thing.

Korak, then Jo.

Next lvl I'm bumping my to hit by 3... This sucks. I'm taking weapon training, and weapon focus on top of my full (with bs rolls) BaB. It sucks being a fighter type who can't hit worth s#+#.

To be fair, it's not that your to-hit sucks, it's that your rolls are insanely bad a lot of the time. Even with a -2 to-hit you have a 50-50 shot to hit this guy, and he's CR +2 compared to you.


When I play a martial I always look for those little +1 to hit. to not hit just sucks

Ah, I see you missed the errata. The lastest edition of the Bestiary clearly states a very significant change: "Moan: This ability has no effect on Korak". ;)

Korak slices into the creature with his Bardiche, wounding it and throwing up a cloud of spores, as it shrugs off Jo's spell like it hadn't even been cast.

Fort saves Korak and Jorriko.

Fearing for its life a bit, it channels some magical energy. Its form begins to blur as 6 CLoakers suddenly spawn form its area, folling its every movement!

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23

1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Future attack rolls need to roll 1d7, 7 hits the cloaker, anything else pops an image.

That was its save vs Daze. SLAs don't provoke, do they? I always thought they didn't since they have no components.

Edit: Actually, I dun goofed. It's a Su ability, and it's a Free action. It still gets to attack. =) Thanks Jorriko.

I don't think that even nearly beats your CMD.

Jorriko takes a swipe at the creature as it fails to grab a hold of Korak, but misses in the confusing medley of images, shattering one of them.

By the way, why are you attacking with he bardiche? the more attack you make the more mirror images you can dispel.

The Cloaker deftly dodges Korak's swipe, but is then nailed by Jo's spell, stopping its movement before it can attack!

I mistakenly let you do that once with Invisibility. Not feeling the love for letting Detect Magic bypass all kinds of buffs completely. Besides, the easy answer for that is "None of them".

Korak, Jorriko already destroyed an image, so you needed a d6. I'll let you keep the 6. =)

The creature shrieks again in pain and releases another cloud of choking spores as Korak's weapon bites deeply into its skin!
