Starflit seems undecided on how to proceed. "Maybe seek out Kaklatath's real body first and try to have her negotiate as Plan A and have a ranged attack as Plan B? I could always cast ears of the city again--as much as I hate doing that in this forsaken place--and try to get a lead on where it might be found."

3. What was the yithians' original purpose in the city?
Starflit Perception Check: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (10) + 21 = 31
Tristain the Chalker |
Tristain waits to see if Starflit can find a solution, but seeing as they are just programmed constructs, it might be fine to just let Lothan have some shooting practice.
He will be sure to be well up in the air when the constructs are attacked.

Once again, Starflit hears from the city, its voice like an oily taint on her soul.
1. It dwells beneath the city, dead but not dead. It has become a favorite toy of those from even farther below. It's in the warrens you're in, somewhere.
2. They stir from their slumber. Once they fully wake, no longer will they be bound behind stone doors. Note that you're in a room with stone doors.
3. They came to fight the polyps. So they came to die for no purpose, throwing their lives away meaninglessly, like you seek to do now. Turn back, or share their fate!
Starflit |
As her senses return to her, Starflit looks at the others, seemingly not recognizing them, fear and confusion in her eyes. After blinking a few times while taking a few steps back from the others, she seems to calm down and regain her composure. Then she reports what she learned from the city.
"I hate this place...," she mutters under her breath while waiting to hear what her allies glean from her gathered intel.
Kyffin Rhees |
Kyffin smiles weakly at Starflit, "Yeah, it's all been pretty crazy since the beginning."
He sighs. "So can we kill the constructs now? Or do we find Kaklatath's body first?"
He frowns, and nods to Kaklatath, "I suppose you'd like your own body back huh? Let's do that first, and see what follows."
He'll head off to find Kaklatath's body.
Albert Hazred |
"Right, let's find Kaklatath's body, then we can get past the constructs without opening the stone doors that seal in the slumbering things, and then we can find the polyps and cleanse the city." With his shiny new armor Al is ready for anything.

You head out the other passage from the room, carefully avoiding getting any closer to the doors and travel again through the dark ruins another 6 minutes of walking. The passages here zigzag unpredictably, sometimes branching into side galleries or banks of rounded alcoves filled with broken glass, sickly vines, and other organic matter that stubbornly resists decomposition.
Again, graffiti in this area covers the walls, showing a knight -- one that looks like the graveknight you fought earlier -- witness two stones hitting the ground, one killing her ... and the other calling to her even beyond her death, calling her back from the grave.
But eventually you find a bit of a wider clearing where you are not along. Three humanoid creatures -- several of you recognize them from the Dreamlands as Leng ghouls -- look up as you arrive. They seem to be gathered around some sort of monstrosity see combat map that Kaklatath looks at in horror -- "That's my body!" she whispers furiously to you.
One of the ghouls grins: "Mortals? What could have brought them to these halls? Has something happened above?"

”Lengers? Here? Huh…yeah, makes sense,” Tristain rumbles to himself, wondering if they are here to make things worse or better, he has no idea.
He will let others make sense and nice of the situation. He would avoid a fight if he could.
”That’s *your* body? The big gelatin salt shaker?” Tris asks Kaklatath.

"Yes, but ... something it wrong with it," Kaklatath replies. "It is ... infected! That must be why I could not return to it."
”Infected? Infected by what?” Tristain asks, and wonders if he’ll remember or know anything about it because of his very marvelous knowledge checks.

You've encountered the Leng ghouls before, so I think you already know about them. Similarly, you've encountered infected creatures before here, so you're familiar with those changes. Kaklatath could certainly have told you about Yithians on your trip here, so you can look at those.
Albert Hazred |
Al looks at the body in the circle of ghouls for a moment, then turns his attention to the creatures surrounding it. "Ah, I see from the gleam in your eye that you aren't the normal ghouls that think with their stomachs, so then surely we can reach a comprise in the negotiation for this body." Albert appears the complete diplomat, though only the party knows that isn't true, and with a gesture of acceptance he steps forward towards the lengers. "There is much we can offer to benefit your goals, without compromise of our ideals as they may be. This can be a transaction that is good for both parties. May we negotiate?" Friendly, old man smiling, slow walking Al steps forward again with an air of cooperation.
Bluff check, Al's just moving forward to slaughter these meatbags: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (14) + 19 = 33

"Oh, but we're studying it," one of the ghouls responds. "We'd hate to lose such a fascinating specimen. Unless you have something of equal value."
One of them whispers to the apparent spokesghoul. "That one says her true body is ... this? If so, that seems like it only makes sense to make that trade. You give us that body and you can have this one."
Overall, they consider 3,000 gp worth of magical scrolls and spellbooks to be a fair price, though will settle for 1,500 gp worth if you can share truly novel lore; succeeding at a DC 40 Knowledge (arcana, dungeoneering, planes, or religion) check is sufficient for this purpose. Kaklatath is willing to give them her current body if she can get back into her new one. Doing so will require destroying the undead yithian form, killing Kaklatath’s human vessel, and then casting resurrection on its yithian body.
Tristain the Chalker |
If we can head off hostilities and get to trading, Tristain is very happy to bust out his chalkboard and walk the Lengers through some very esoteric and arcane areas of knowledge, including, but not limited to, planar halitosis, quantum twerking, the latest in phrenology research, and trepanning for fun and profit.
”…and you see that’s why one’s taint is the true center of mass for the purposes of divination or hallucinagenic applications,” Tristain underlines some key bullet points on his chalkboard as he finishes his presentation. ”Any questions?” He claps the chalk dust off his hands and looks around.
1d20 + 25 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 25 + 2 = 40 Know (Arcana/Planes/Religion)
Okay, didn’t think I’d make that check, but here we are. I hope the Lengers took notes.
Albert Hazred |
Albert is truly impressed with Tristain's ability to bluff the ghouls and plays along with the ruse. "You should listen to him, he's very smart you know, it's all the head bonking I suspect." Al waits to see if the body can be secured before hacking at the meatbags.
Kyffin Rhees |
Kyffin moves up, fully expecting the party to bum rush the, well, bums, but no. Al is... talking to them?
Kyffin, in his shock, doesn't immediately start swinging. He stares dumbfounded. First we're protecting constructs. Now we're protecting undead? Tristain has gone too far over the edge! Something must be done.
Starflit |
Starflit recognizes the Leng ghouls for what they are; like Al, the inquisitor of Black Butterfly wants to see the Nyarlathotep-worshiping undead destroyed. Tristain's monologue/lesson befuddles her a bit, though, so she waits to see if violence can be averted.

Lol! Good ones!
With a wry grin and a roll of his eyes as he looks over at Tristain, "Yes, the 'head bonking', I'm sure that's it," he says dryly.
A thought then occurs to him and he cuts his attention toward the undead. "You know, you bunch of undead freak shows, you all should try it sometime... the head bonking that is; especially on the pointy end of a sword," he says matter-of-factly. "That'd be cool."

The ghouls seem intrigued by Tristain's ramblings, but still hesitant. "Fascinating, but surely you can do better than that if you want such an interesting subject."
They still want 1,500 gp worth of magical scrolls and spellbooks plus Kaklatath's body. Otherwise, we'll go to combat or you can try something else (but that's the limits of their negotiations).
Tristain the Chalker |
Aren't we trying to get Kaklatath's body? Isn't that the infected thing we're negotiating for? I have a confuzzle that would be easily fixed around a table, but here it's weird.
Kyffin? Do we have anything from the loot that might work? Seems like we've sold most of it?
Al, want to try to negotiate?
Tristain looks at others who might be better with money than a guy that went into teaching for a career...which is an idiotic thing to do as a way to make money.
Kyffin Rhees |
Kyffin frowns at the parties shenanigans. "I am not giving them loot to be used for their evil. Going out of our way to avoid hurting constructs is bad enough, but this is totally uncalled for!" He shouts by the end. He glares at Al wondering how he could even consider this.
He swings his scimitar around, itching to get on with it.
We have some loot items, but no scrolls/books. You'll have to fight Kyffin for any of it though.
Albert Hazred |
Al nods approvingly at Kyffin, surprised that the party could be so good at playing along with the bluff. "Yes, well it's for a worthy cause, you should let them look in our loot bag to see if anything catches their eye." Al winks dramatically and points at his sword during the 'eye' reference.
If the ghouls step away from the body to peer in the bag, then Al will launch the attack, but if they stay by the body then Al launches the attack, and if they do anything else Al launches the attack.

Yes, you're trying to get Kaklatath's original body, which is the infected thing. The ghouls want the human body Kaklatath is inhabiting. As noted, you'll need to destroy the undead yithian form, kill Kaklatath’s human vessel, and then cast resurrection on its yithian body. (Kaklatath is fine with that.)
That said, sounds like the plan is to attack. I'll roll initiative tomorrow (it's been a long day already).

From a chat w/Motte: Three Leng ghouls -- kaklatath's old body is there too, and you know it's infected but it hasn't done anything yet. I'd say the ghouls are probably 10 feet away from each other (sort of in a triangle pointing toward you, with 10 feet between each) and K's body is maybe 10 feet behind the last two.

Tristain and Al finish off the ghoul, leaving the rest of the group to concentrate on the yithian's body. Kyffin slices it once, while Lothan sinks a few arrows into it. Still, it remains on its feet, and lashes out at the half-orc, who easily avoids its attacks. It's just a matter of a few more seconds and you're able to dispatch it.
Kaklatath blinks at the carnage of its former body, then looks up at you all. "It had to be done," it says. "But do we have a way to restore me to my true form?"

Tristain the Chalker |
As the bad things die, Tristain has mixed feelings about their deaths. ”I mean, I just gave a heck of a lesson on phrenology, and I guess that was a waste of time? I mean, did you guys even pay attention?” Tris looks at the party, hopeful that someone learned something. He avoids focusing too much on that one bump/nodule on Lothan’s head.
Starflit, don’t suppose you have access to Raise Dead, do you? We’ll need that or resurrect to get her going again. Might be the local shopkeeper has a solution if we don’t.
”Yeah, we’re working on that Kaklatath. We’ll work something out.”
Kyffin Rhees |
Kyffin smiles, ”I can cast it tomorrow if you can't Starflit. I even had the foresight to bring a diamond along. Keep in mind, it’s our only one, so if one of you blokes goes down, you’re out of luck until we can get another one.”
He suggests, after a thorough search of the area, they rest here. It's a slightly short day, but no one wants to carry a dead body around...
