Tristain creases his forehead and ponders who that might be.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

It's new.

Tristain hasn't heard the name before, but it sounds likely that it's a cleric among giants or some other similar position of importance.

"Oy, well, she 'ad a dream of you, didn't she?" Oaag asks. "Sure we said that already..."

"You'd think they'd know that from their own dreams. But maybe their 'eads aren't big enough to fit a dream in there?" Lurrohak posits.

"Of course we can fit dreams in here, they're high compression dreams, the strength and shape of the skull allows for maximum pressure, that's why this one bonks his head all the time, it's like a nest of bees in there. Now, what was that dream Mother Grim Moon had about us?"

Starflit frowns as she's described as a rather grim and gloomy dresser. (Hey! The mithral adds an element of flash to the ensemble!) She'd considered that going along peacefully might work to the party's advantage, but....

"These big lugs know more about us than I'm comfortable with," she whispers to Kyffin. "Still, I'm not privy to everything that happened to you, Al, and Tristain in the dream realm, so...if you think meeting with this Mother Grim Moon might give us a lead and isn't just a trap, I'll back your play."

”I hear you. We did not encounter her in the dream world, and I don’t think these guys are smart enough for a trap. Tough sure, but I think they’d take a more direct approach. We might never find this woman in all this desert. I say we check it out.”

While the boring conversation continues, Lothan continues to waffle on which one he's going to fill full of arrows first. I think I'm going to go with the one that called me a nutter. These 'sticks' will find their way right through your eye, moron. Everyone knows that T is the nutter. And I do NOT talk a lot. Lucky for these two idiots, I haven't filled them BOTH full of arrows because I want to know who this 'Grammy Moon' lady is or whatever the hell it is they call her. Hopefully, they'll lead us straight to the old hag so we can put an end to her. Oh yeah, I love it when a plan comes together. A sly grin then forms upon the half-elf's face.

Hey, that's not very nice! These guys have a 9 Int. That's almost average. Probably smarter than Lothan! :D

"What, you ain't dreamed of her yourself then?" one asks.

"No, just because Mother Grim Moon sees them in their dreams, that don't mean that they dream, Oaag. I told you, they ain't got big enough heads for dreams. What with all the nighthorses they probably got in there, about being stepped on, account of them being so little and all."

They go back and forth for a little longer, but eventually it becomes clear that Mother Grim Moon is in fact the leader of their group of Shatter Smile giants who's in a camp about two days away. And that they've been told to look for you, because she wants to talk to you.

Kyffin shrugs. How far are we from our goal?

"Can we have a moment to confer?" He turns away from the giants, but doesn't really walk away far.

He turns to the others, "Well we're [beeep] from our goal. If we follow these fine folk, we lose the wind walk. We can walk the rest of the way or use another scroll when we're done. We have three currently so I'm not too worried."

"I think this is interesting, and I want to go, but we should decide as a group. So what say you all? Do we follow the giants to danger? Or keep scouring the desert for our quarry?"

Plus I've got to say, I love the way you're playing the giants! GREAT scene!

You eventually make it to the giants' camp after hearing a number of other apparently well-intentioned but nonetheless somewhat insulting observations about you, mostly relating to your very small, itty-bitty, teeny-weeny size: Several dozen broad tents of hides stretched across bone and chitin supports sprawl out in the shadow of a steep-sided hill. Glassy rivulets of broken obsidian slither down the dark slopes, and the entire peak is cleft in two as if split by some tremendous force.

The giants there seem surprised to see you, but as they realize you are in fact with Oaag and Lurrohak, they offer you tentative -- and yet ghastly -- smiles.

They lead you to a large pavilion, where an aging giant woman stares east -- toward Neruzavin. As you approach, she turns to face you. Wrinkles radiate like cobwebs across the leathery mask that is the face of this aging ash giant. Her stare intensifies, and her smile twists into a rictus of delight. “At long last, the dreamers arrive," she says. "Survivors of Sarnath, delvers of darkness, seekers of the oasis, they who walked the sleeping forest and spoke to the Yellow King. You have walked upon the moon with footsteps that echo of the end times.” Wheezing punctuates her cackles. “Yes, yes, I have awaited you. Tell me of what you would do before the world dies.”

”Uh, I think I’d spend my time stopping the world from dying,” Tristain answers the obvious. ”If I can’t do that, I’d like to read for a while in a big library that doesn’t have monsters in it.”

Tristain remains (overland) flying, skittishly ready to bolt if things get violent or someone starts and unneeded fight.

Walked on the moon? What? Kyffin wonders.

"Well that's a tough question, ma'am." he bows with respect to her age and, he hopes, wisdom. "I suppose, with what time I have left," he chuckles at some unknown joke, "I'll kill evil as I can find it. With respect of course, and meaning no harm to you and yours. For we are here under the flag of truce. The evil we hunt is far greater than any disagreements we may have."

"Still, I only speak for myself," he glances at Al. "We've had to suffer much evil on our trail thus far."

I'd probably find myself a chair, carry it outside on a brisk sunny morning, sit down, and listen to the sounds of life until the world kills over," he says plainly, losing himself in thought for a long moment before rousing himself from his reverie and saying, "Yep, I'm thinking that's what I'd do."

She smiles at your answers, but ignores Al's question and climbs creakily to her feet. "Those are pretty words, but speeches can't fell all foes," she says as she begins walking toward the cleft in the hill and waving for you to follow.

“The Shatter Smile is proud and strong and has always taken stone from this hill. This time its people found one of the beasts the girtablilus stole from us, and even the clan’s best claw-speakers cannot convince it to submit. This has made the Shatter Smile resent the beast, and had I not intervened, they would have thrown rocks until it crumbled -- good, but not bold. The beast is too immense to risk getting closer, so they have trapped it in the hill.

[b]“You are the dream-walkers, the city-seekers, the endstoppers. You come to me seeking my counsel, yet you cannot command the true respect of this clan. Tame what they cannot -- fight what gives them fear -- and they shall honor you. The Shatter Smile is not strong enough to brave the holy city. If you cannot be stronger than them, why should I waste breath explaining that you are too weak to enter?”

The cleft is partly blocked by a jumble of boulders nearly 10 feet tall -- enough to deter an immense scorpion within from escaping, but not enough to trap it completely. Mother Grim Moon pauses in sight of the ridge and calls out to the other giants as she challenges you to
prove your might.

Assuming you agree
The ash giants use their bodies to form a roughly 100-foot-diameter ring around the cleft’s entrance, with you inside. Chanting and stomping the ground rhythmically, they use their vermin empathy to goad the scorpion to emerge and fight.

"Wait until the scorpion has emerged entirely before you strike," Mother Grim Moon warns. "We giants value cunning, but we respect only strength."

About to leave for the weekend. You can place yourselves on the map. They're 20-foot squares. The scorpion will be coming from the south.

Is there a wall around where-upon Tristain can bonk?

Tristain looks for a wall or tree upon which to bonk while he tries to sort out his thoughts on the offer and mission.

"Are we supposed to *kill* the scorpion? Or just knock it out? I mean, I'm sure we can do either, probably, maybe, but also don't want to make any mistakes," Tristain seeks clarification, echoing Kyffin's query.

Tristain can't move on the map either, and definitely wouldn't be in front, let alone between Lothan and something he wants to shoot, lest a 'sorry, it slipped' accident happen. Tris would be 30' back and 30' up.

We will return this stolen property to you and your clan, excuse me for a moment." Al quickly steps to Lothan and clearly begs in a lower voice that he also makes audible to the closest giants for emphasis of the party's ability. "Please, do NOT kill this creature, I beg you, just subdue it. I know you can pincushion it in second and wow them with our ability to kill quickly, but let's just return their property. Do this and I promise I'll put in a good word for you with the next, um, 'pursuit'." Tristain looks at Lothan.

Tristain: "Don't you think we should help him?"
Lothan: "He told me not to hurt anything."
T: "Are you sure? We should save that totally normal human man."
L: "I promised."
T: "You what?"
L: "I promised."
T: "You don't keep promises. Do...you?" Tristain isn't sure at all.
L: "Yeah. Absolutely. All the time."
T: "What?"
Tristain turns to hear Al screaming in the distance.
T: "Huh. What do you know?"

Tristain ponders his actions. He's very far away and not sure he can help. But maybe.

Starflit's taken aback by Al's sudden charge and the scorpion's ruinous retribution. She invokes a pair of judgments to protect herself (protection and purity) and then rushes toward the mighty arachnid. It quickly becomes apparent that she won't be able to get close enough to Al to also be able to use her freedom's call ability immediately, so the inquisitor lets out a screech of frustration and closes on the scorpion, trying to get its attention so Kyffin can (hopefully) approach it without getting attacked in the process.

OK, looks like Starflit can reach the scorpion with a double move. Freedom's call will have to wait 'til next round, as it requires a standard action to activate. 'Flit will try to draw an AoO from the scorpion's stinger so Kyffin can approach safely (hopefully, this thing is a mindless vermin and doesn't get feats like, say, Combat Reflexes).

Tristain flies over to Al, the totally normal human. ”Al? You okay? What were you doing? What were you thinking? Do you need a good bonk to figure things out?” Tristain is concerned, but also worried for the reckless ‘bravery’ that was displayed.

Starflit joins Tristain in checking on Al. Though she doesn't chide Al for his reckless bravery, she does use her magic to heal him some immediately. One might get the impression that she doesn't fully trust the ash giants nearby.

Kyffin will climb down out of the sky and touch Al and Starflit (fast healing 3 for 1 minute). "Al, you need a top up?" How wounded are you? Happy to tap for another fast healer or cast a spell.

”Next fight, let’s all hang back and prep a round before rushing in huh? I was going to give us all a bit of a booster for that one.” he chuckles though, knowing what the team can do.

"It didn't seem so big and mean until I got close, thanks team, thanks Starflit, you saved my life there." With the extra healing, Al is back to his normal self. "Well, that took all of half a minute, hope that impressed the giants. Let's see what they think."

The fully healed Al addresses the clan and the giant queen. "What say you, have we proved our worth? We did not shy away from the beast, risked limb and life, and conquered it quickly. Are we worthy of the clan's respect, what say you?"
