Tenebrynn takes the opportunity of the boys talking to the wildly scarred figure at the door to quickly glance around the front of the building for any balconies, opens windows on the second floor, or flat sections of roof.

That's not very nice, Kyffin. He didn't say anything about your nasty clothing.

"I'm sorry, I'm afraid I really am quite busy," the man repeats. "Please, return tomorrow, and I'm sure I'll have more time then."

He begins to close the door you'll have to physically interject to stop him.

Looking around, Tenebrynn can see the old infirmary is built of hefty stone blocks pierced with narrow windows that are closed behind iron shutters.

What? I thought we just bought some nice new duds! Why even bother buying new clothes if not to look down upon those who look unkempt!?

Tristain crestfalls, but is willing to return tomorrow.

Kyffin, not wanting to be the one to start a physical altercation - at least not this time - lets the door close.

He'll move off a little ways to chat with the group, "Maybe if I were better dressed..." he shrugs grinning. "Let's go shopping and take a breather. We can come back tomorrow, early, and sort this mess out. I wonder what he's doing for the navy?"

If the group agrees, he'll trudge back to town and shopping buying what he previously outlined. He'll wear the more colorful (and expensive) clothes that day and that evening as the party spends the day relaxing about town.

Tomorrow, he'll put on the adventurer's gear: heavy boots, clothes that wash the blood out more easily, in fact more durable clothes in general.

Starflit, he definitely seems a bit odd -- almost too polite, perhaps? -- but you're not sure you can completely put your finger on what might be motivating him.

Starflit crosses her arms over her chest as the confrontation passes. "That was more...accommodating of you folks than I'd expected," the strange- and spooky-looking butterfly gal comments. "Is it wise to let a likely foe have another day to work his wickedness while we...shop?"

While there's definitely a level of judgment in the words of the Black Butterfly's agent, there's also a refreshing honesty to her question. You get the sense she's walking a fine line between judging the pre- and post-fugue-state character of some members of the party. Walking on eggshells, as it were, yet wanting to trust in the party's collective judgment.

Wait here. Or there. Tenebrynn leaps off the roof and seems to be about to crash into the ground when her fall slows suddenly just before impact. The gust of wind that buffets her landing leaves a huge disc of flattened grass around her and once again sprays the party with a thin, reedy mud.

Tristain's magic brings everyone inside as Tenebrynn leaps to the roof again. Ivy fills the room -- endless trailing vines flow in through broken windows and cover the floor here like a living carpet. The sickening scent of decay hides within the scent of fresh vegetation. The attic ceiling rises 10 feet overhead, and daylight streams in through the broken windows. Unlike the ivy outside, the tendrils in the attic are twisted and malformed. Putrid yellow berries sprout like cancerous growths between the leaves.

As you look around, Starflit suddenly notices something -- a horrifying, pitch-black monstrosity, seemingly made of ropy tentacles -- amid the vines in the ceiling beams. She reacts moments before it does.

"It's also immune to acid, electricity, and poison!" Starflit tells the others in an urgent tone as she deftly dodges the writhing ivy. Drawing her dagger, she imbues the weapon with her bane power (against aberrations) and slashes at the frightful monster. She hesitates but a moment, trying to find a soft spot to target, and it costs her. The ivy grabs at her arms and whips against her elbow, causing her stab to go horribly awry and for her to momentarily lose her balance.

Again, her minute slip-up is costly. More ivy skitters across the attic floor before twisting up her legs, while the vines clinging to the rafters descend to secure her arms and upper torso. Starflit grunts as she tests the binding foliage, finding herself neatly entangled...like a butterfly caught in a spider's web. A rogue vine works its way up the right side of her face, crushing its berries as it goes. The branch starts dragging the sticky yellow juice across the captive's temple and then down her cheek, starting to draw what might be a familiar symbol on her skin....

Starflit Reflex Save (PfE): 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 8 + 2 = 28

Starflit dagger (bane): 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 10 + 2 = 13 for magic, slashing damage: 1d4 + 2 + 2 + 2d6 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 2 + (4, 6) = 15

Starflit Reflex Save (PfE; End of Turn): 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 8 + 2 = 11

Well...three out of four important rolls in that post were 1s. Wonderful. I took some dramatic license to have the ivy (possibly) start to draw the Yellow Sign on Starflit's face to give Tristain something to start bonking over.

Also, not sure if the ivy's entangle condition prevents movement; it's not unthinkable that it's rooted in the floor cracks and wrapped around the attic rafters.

ADDENDUM: Starflit took a 5-foot step last round, so she should be in the square below Al on the combat map.

Round 1/2:

Albert: 16*
Tenebrynn: 13*
Kyffin: 20
Starflit: 19
Tristain: 24
Antagonist: 18 (entangle)

The ivy seems to slide off Starflit, but not before disrupting her aim as she slashes at the creature. Kyffin goes to move, pulling out of the vines, but finding they impede his ability as he steps forward. The whole area is difficult terrain. A tentacle lashes out and slams into him, wrapping around and pulling him close, crushing the air from his lungs. 13 hp from the tentacle, then you're grabbed and 18 hp constrict

Fortunately, he still provides cover for Tristain, who moves behind him and casts a spell, adding speed to your movement. Unfortunately for him, that's not enough to protect him from the lashing creature.

The creature's tentacles wrap up Kyffin, pinning him as they continue to crush the lift from his body, ribs snapping 17 more hp, plus now pinned. Worse, he feels little suckers on its tentacles sucking at his blood, and feels himself weakening. 4 Str drain; DC 22 Fort save to reduce that to 1 Str drain Its remaining tentacles lash out, ready to strike at anything else in the room.

Kyffin and Tristain (and Tenebrynn when she sees the creature):

Similar to outside, you receive a chaotic image of hundreds of faces all flickering between one another, and hear, “It sends its tendrils through their minds to gather its strength, but despite your knowledge you are clean. You can stop it. Don’t let it infect this world and serve it to Carcosa.”

Mechanics:

Kyffin Reflex: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
AoO vs. Kyffin: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (18) + 18 = 36
1d6 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
Grab: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (5) + 23 = 28
Constrict: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18

Grapple to Pin: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (15) + 23 = 38
Constrict: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
1d4 ⇒ 4

The area is still affected by entangle. It is difficult terrain. It doesn't look like Al attempted the DC 16 Reflex save when the spell was cast, nor did Tris or Kyffin at the end of their turn. Tenebrynn will have to attempt the save if she enters the area. Everyone must ALSO save at the end of their turn. Note that it has more tentacles than the one pinning Kyffin, so it could have more attacks of opportunity, and you cannot take 5-foot steps because of the difficult terrain. I'll rule that Starflit's domain power allows her to ignore the difficult terrain, since it's caused by the grasping plants.

Round 2

Starflit feels Tristain's spell affect her, and she wants nothing more than to wade into battle with the otherworldly aberration (even with a mere dagger) and cut the thing to ribbons. But she's seen what the horror has done--is doing--to Kyffin, and she has the power to do something about that....

"Silence is freedom," the agent of the Black Butterfly states matter-of-factly, and an aura of confidence (see Freedom's Call spoiler) sweeps over her beleaguered allies. Again, the young lady zigs when she should have zagged and seems destined to be mummified in grasping ivy, yet somehow she slips free at the very last instant, carefully sliding further south to make room for others to join the battle.

Freedom's Call:

Freedom’s Call (Su): At 8th level, you can emit a 30-foot aura of freedom for a number of rounds per day equal to your cleric level. Allies within this aura are not affected by the confused, grappled, frightened, panicked, paralyzed, pinned, or shaken conditions. Frowning, the little gnome then redirects the arcs down to her hands, readying to hurl a lightning bolt at the spawn, but then Starflit warns it won’t faze it and her frown deepens. Muttering something under her breath, she lets the lightning fade as she draws the winds in around her. With a quick, spinning snap kick, she sends a blast through the window for the tentacled foe across the attic.

Agreed; only a single attack, since it's still difficult terrain Tenebrynn follows him, squeezing into the room, though her attack is far more effectively, the air slamming into the creature. You did have to move to see it, so 2 burn.

Picking up on Al's call, Starflit calls on her own deity, and suddenly the tentacles fall off Kyffin and the others, freeing them to attack. Tristain blasts the monster with his mind missles, as Kyffin brings his blade to bear. Round 2:

    Albert: 16
    Tenebrynn: 13
    Kyffin: 20
    Starflit: 19
    Tristain: 24
    Antagonist: 18 (entangle)

The thing looming over your head and the strange foliage -- even if it keeps slipping off you -- proves to be difficult to hit, blades landing on the beams and other vines and almost anything except their target. Tenebrynn's blast makes a mark, and Kyffin thinks he cuts it once, but it lashes out at the gnome 11 hp and Tristain as they press the attack 14 hp; will need a concentration check for that spell to go off.

Then, to make matters worse, it seems to convulse, and the attic beams and entire structure above gives way. The dark young drops, crashing to the floor below and bringing splintered wooden beams with it. 5 hp to all but Kyffin; DC 25 Reflex save to negate It lashes out, tentacles flying as it tries to hit its tormentors, though Kyffin and Starflit manages to let their armor take the brunt of the impact. 26 hp to Tenebrynn, 11 to Tristain

    Mechanics:

    AoO vs. Tenebrynn: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (12) + 18 = 30

    AoO vs. Tristain: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (11) + 18 = 29
    1d6 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14

    2d6 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5

    vs. Tenebrynn: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (20) + 18 = 38

    Crit vs. Tenebrynn?: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (15) + 18 = 33
    1d6 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12

    Round 4

Starflit uses the unnatural mobility granted by her empyreal mistress to slip to the east, into flanking position opposite Kyffin. Then she tries to carve the plantlike monster up like a pumpkin. This time, her flashing blade is much more accurate. She also keeps her domain powers up and running.

    Starflit dagger attack #1 (bane, haste, flanking): 1d20 + 10 + 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 10 + 2 + 1 + 2 = 21 for magic, slashing damage: 1d4 + 2 + 2 + 2d6 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 2 + (5, 2) = 15 (19-20)

    Starflit dagger attack #2 (bane, haste, flanking): 1d20 + 5 + 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 5 + 2 + 1 + 2 = 30 for magic, slashing damage: 1d4 + 2 + 2 + 2d6 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 2 + (1, 4) = 13 (19-20)

    Starflit dagger attack extra/haste (bane, haste), flanking: 1d20 + 10 + 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 10 + 2 + 1 + 2 = 34 for magic, slashing damage: 1d4 + 2 + 2 + 2d6 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 2 + (6, 6) = 20 (19-20)

    Starflit dagger attack #2 Confirm? (bane, haste, flanking): 1d20 + 5 + 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 5 + 2 + 1 + 2 = 24 for additional magic, slashing damage: 1d4 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 2 = 8 (19-20)

    Starflit dagger attack extra/haste Confirm? (bane, haste), flanking: 1d20 + 10 + 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 10 + 2 + 1 + 2 = 17 for additional magic, slashing damage: 1d4 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 2 = 5 (19-20)

    Starflit Reflex Save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18 2 dmg total after DR 3/evil.

    Combat Notes:

    Judgments (protection +3 sacred bonus to AC, +6 vs. attacks to confirm crits; resiliency DR 3/evil);
    communal protection from evil (+2 deflection bonus to AC, +2 resistance bonus on saves vs. evil creatures trumped by magic cloak);
    Bane (aberrations) Round #3 of 15;
    Domain Powers liberation (Round #4 of 10), freedom's call (Round #3 of 10);
