Grr. Just lost my post...

Despite the doubled guard, nothing of note seems to happen overnight and shortly after waking you are ready to head out again. Feel free to retcon in some attempts to fix Khaz here, unless Kyson's given up in abject failure.

You soon put several more miles beneath your feet, when Zstelian suddenly notices something as Tavey and Silvio walk past a cave in the cliffside: Inside the cave are several statues that look just like the creatures that attacked you earlier.

Worse, a moment later, he sees one shift almost imperceptibly!

Kyson awakes early, as he usually does, and looks over to Khaz's mangled, droopy face to ensure that his cure has held. If it has, he will pray to the morning sun for wisdom and healing to aid his friends.

When he is finished with that (and maybe even Khaz has joined him), he will tend to Khaz's hideousness.

The creatures, looking just like the previous ones, surge from the cave and you realize with a start that there are more of them than you realized, three of them emerging from the south side of the cave where they clearly had hoped to catch you by surprise. We had a little confusion it looks like in terms of locations, at least with Khaz and Seka, so I'm tweaking their actions a bit. The map is currently updated.

Seka unloads his second pistol on the gargoyle blocking the path, the bullet hitting but not seeming to do any damage. No sneak attack as it's not flat-footed nor in a flank, and it has some DR.

Khazmia moves precariously near the edge of the cliff and readies a spell should anything come close. She's followed by Kyson, whose ball of flame explodes in mid-air, catching three of the gargoyles and nearly blowing two of them out of the sky. One of the pair instead rushes toward him, only to be caught by the Keleshite princess' magic, which finishes the job Kyson started. The second, however, uses it for cover to close with Sekathral, clawing at the elf. 4 hp

Zstelian tears into the nearest gargoyle, which lurches back as Kayle slams into it. It's immediately replaced by a second gargoyle, though, which directs its full fury at the old Varisian. He's able to fend off one claw and its jaws, but the second claw catches him in the ribs and leaves him open for its horn. 11 hp total

Khazmia tags the gargoyle leader, acid rushing over him, followed by a blast of flame from Kyson, though the cleric is bloodied as the injured creature swipes at him with a claw. 10 hp Seconds later, blows from Sekathral and Silvio -- the former creating a thunderous boom that echoes off the cliffs -- put the gargoyle down.

With his defeat, it's just a matter of time before you're able to deal with the rest, and the path again falls quiet.

It looks like my post got eaten by the great December rollback.

Zstelian tucks his weapons away and looks to the party. "Everyone in one piece?"

"Look around. They must have been guarding something in here."

Perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (3) + 15 = 18

It looks less like a lair than a convenient ambush spot, from what you can see, Zstelian.

Kyson looks around to gauge the damage that people have, including to himself.

He calls upon sweet, sweet Sarenrae for help in healing.

Are you there, Sarenrae? It's me, Kyson. I need you.

Kyson will help loot the bodies (and then toss them off the cliff) and look around for damsels/loot.

Zstelian shakes his head. "This was an ambush. I don't know what we did to get on these thing's bad side but its obvious they're out to get us."

"So nothing much here, Zstelian? Let's get moving," Kyson says with a grumble, wondering why they are the subject to so much monster hate.

Kyson gives another glance-over the colonists and party to see if anyone needs anything, then is ready to move on.

Zstelian nods in agreement and resumes leading the way toward Farshore.

"After that beating, maybe they'll recognize that we're not worth attacking and leave us in peace now."

One of the gargoyles was wearing some sort of crown.

One of the dead ones?

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 32, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

They're all dead. I just handwaved the last few, since it was a foregone conclusion and you're not likely to get in more trouble today that necessitates keeping track of resources/hp. Of course, I left my book at home so I can't tell you anything about said crown...

"Khaz. I thought you might like this. Because you're a princess and all."

Khazmia stops, stunned by Kyson's offering. "I...thank you, Kyson. I would, very much." She nods then touches him on the shoulder, urging him to his feet. Removing her scarf, she tilts her head slightly, that he may place it on her head. "Would you, please, Kyson."

Kyson pleases, yes he does. Anything to make up for his failures of recent. He pleases very much.

"Uhm, okay," Kyson says, getting to his feet.

Kyson gently puts the crown on Khaz' head.

You'll be shocked to discover...

The crown is in fact magical. Crafted from a piece of carefully carved granite, it features three sharp points in the front with a series of small points ringing the rest of the wearer's head.

Once per day, the crown can be activated to give the wearer DR 5/adamantine for 10 minutes, giving her skin the appearance of stone. It also grants its wearer a special smite attack (+4 to attack rolls and damage) once per day against creatures touching natural stone or earth.

In addition, the gargoyle has 10 rings on his fingers (nonmagical, but worth 100 gp each), and bracers that also radiate magic. bracers of armor +2

Is that smite like paladin smite in that it lasts for the duration of the encounter against the target or only on one attack?

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 32, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Only on one attack. And though it doesn't say, I'll call activating it a free action, but one that needs to be made before the attack.

Ah. If it was for the duration of the encounter I'd say it's better off on one of the melee but since it's only one attack, it doesn't really matter.

Zstelian confers the usage of the crown to Khazmia.

"Let's get going. If Khaz is right we don't want to be ambushed here again."

Silvio shies away from the concept of chopping up the gargoyles and making totems to dissuade potential enemies from further attacks. "That sounds crude and barbaric. As soon as the word spreads that Silvio Callgari Pazzi travels this path it should be enough to discourage further attacks."

Any takers for the bracers?
