Stuff about Playing Style
Since my name has been thrown around a bit here, I thought I might respond. Firstly, my apologies for dropping out again. Real life issues got in the way of enjoying roleplaying, and I had to quit cold turkey for a time.
Secondly, and I have said this earlier, but I will post again for clarification and the enjoyment of others, if this is at all possible. (I may be dragging up old arguments with this, so if this is the case, please ignore.) Fortunately, I think speaking with Ashe earlier in the campaign did allow him to avail himself of a less overburdening tone and even cutting back on the extracharacterial knowledge. In the few times he has done it since, at least with Una around, not wanting to bring up a player conflict again, I had decided to roleplay her response. Which is primarily growing suspicion: How did he know to go there, of all places. Why did he find that so quickly? Out of all these people, why that one specifically? Since Una is a bit of a non-religious person, believing in herself and her own abilities, I believe she eventually put it all down to the divine powers of paladins, and divine interference.
This led to a bit of an emotional fault. Not having this specific divine connection may have resulted in jealousy, the feeling of unfairness, and perhaps overall incompetence. Which only increased her suspicions, the more stuff that Ashe seemed to know. Suspicion was and still is an emotion that Una is far more prepared to deal with than the feelings of jealousy and incompetence.
More than once, Una has wanted to branch off on her own, but she would not have the same resources that the party has, namely the haunted harrow deck, which seems to be the main pivotal plot driving instrument. This would also create a GMing nightmare for Megan, and I really do not want to put any more pressure on her from a player perspective, knowing all that she is doing for this game and even another I am currently playing in.
From a roleplaying perspective, I see Una growing more conflicted as a result of Ashe's divine gifts, possibly even turning Chaotic Neutral over time if the character conflicts continue. Lawful characters are more stick-y than willow-y, so they do not change as often, but chaotic characters can change with the wind. Their flexibility is usually an admirable part of their character, just as a paladin's infallibility is also mostly admirable.
Are these characters compatible, though? Perhaps, if they completely ignore one another... lol. But I'm playing a Kingmaker campaign where a lawful neutral (on the verge of evil) court bard and a paladin of Erastil get along very well. The paladin is even the bard's bodyguard.
But what would Una do in this situation, that is what I keep asking myself. She is a female warrior, skilled in what she does, but almost never taken seriously in a male-dominated career. She lives in a city of vile politics and religious leaders where the survival and thriving of the lower classes is questionable at best, where drugs take their toll, guards and the like are not at all incorruptible, and where now it seems like royalty is striking out against its own populace. Add to this mix, a paladin companion who (perhaps inadvertently) stings every nerve in Una's body, and you have some idea of the internal conflicts Una is going through.
It might be easiest to retire the character, as sad as that makes me. Perhaps I can use her again in another adventure path. But I am not sure that heroic is a term that can be applied to someone who continually wonders about going down the dark paths.

Well, Una had a lot to say.
I'm a long-term gamer. At this point it is harder to play a character that isn't aware of what's going on than one that knows. You have to self-edit player knowledge versus character knowledge, especially so in a group environment.

With the front door smashed in on the first round, without a word, Ashe moves into the front office room sword drawn and shield at the ready, still scanning the building for evil. He moves in and moves to the left of the door away from the large window'?' on the right and will move as far into the room as his movement allows, securing position in a very military assault fashion.Ashe moves to the square to the right side of the only door exiting the storefront lobby. He motions to Shakhan to move past him to the square opposite his on the left side of the door.
Looking for any obvious hostiles.Perception 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
When in position Ashe will open the door for Shakhan to enter first and follow him in taking a position to his right on the inside of the next room.
Ashe is still detecting for evil, again it is a 60'ft cone as he is doing only a move action with his movement.
I detected for evil, which is my usual policy and procedure with paladins, to see if opponents could be located and number determined.
Megan replied with…
Una: you can hop over the fence into B6 quite easily, especially if Risdin gives you a hand. You find yourself in a large cattle pen which is open to the air, and the stink of manure, mud, and animal is strong, despite the breeze that wafts through the stockade's wooden fence. To the south stands a roofed shed containing a straw-filled wagon - it is the barred door of this shed that you failed to kick in earlier. There are a couple of cows and half-a-dozen small pigs here, they all back away from you rather nervously.
Those of you in the shop front cannot see anything more hostile than a few blow-flies.
Results of the detect evil spell
You all move cautiously forwards. Whiteplume opens the door and Shakhan steps through, finding himself in a dark hallway.
Revealing to me 5 evil targets… 4 on the main floor and 1 on the second floor.
One of the evil foes Ashe and Shakhna dispatch almost immediately as he is in the hall we are advancing through hiding on the steps out of line of sight.
Ashe comments..
Asherick whispers to Shakhan,'There are three opponents before us they are keeping their distance back from the door two on your side one on mine. Be prepared for missile attacks when I... open the door.'Glancing at Hytogg noting the holy symbol at his neck in hushed tones, "Would you be so kind as to Bless our resolve, Priest of the All-Seeing Eye?"
Then nodding to Shakhan, "On three..."
Asherick checks the doors for any lock or potential traps...
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
To which Megan posts…
Whiteplume and Risdin open their respective doors at exactly the same time. Everyone sees that the floor of this grim chamber is strewn with blood-stained straw, and the reek of slaughter is almost overpowering. The room itself is a killing floor. A metal track affixed to the ceiling dangles meat hooks here and there, allowing the hooks and their gory loads to be moved easily from the northwest where a large hammer sits on the floor amid a permanent bloodstain. To the south, a bloodstained grill covers a wide hole in the floor. Just north of the grill sit two large vats of water; one boiling and one cold. Two large butcher blocks stand to the east next to barrels of salt, and in the southeast corner sits a reeking vat of cast-off meat and bones. (If you have visited an abbatoir, you know how yucky even well-maintained ones are, if you haven't... well, you just cannot imagine it!)There are three people in here, all engaged - until you burst in from seemingly all sides - in slaughter and butchery. All are in their shirt-sleeves and bloody to the elbows. The remains of two pigs and a cow hang from the hooks and are slowly losing animal form as they become cuts of meat.
Alerted by Whiteplume's shout, the men are not surprised... but the only weapons to hand are butcher tools. They don't look like they are contemplating laying down the cleavers, however...
A short battle breaks out and the party subdues the foes. 4 evil foes downed or subdued.
Then Megan posts…
Hytogg, you hear a voice from upstairs."What's going on down there? What's all that row?"
Fellow #1 (near Una) is grumbling a bit but willing to surrender.
So is Fellow #3 (dropped cleaver at Whiteplume's feet).
But Fellow #2 raises his cleaver to take another hack at Shakhan! 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Can you critical with a meat cleaver? Oh well, 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 this fellow cannot!
Damage, 1d4 ⇒ 1 - as Shakhan's declared a readied action, would you take it, please? If you drop him, he didn't hit you...
To me, as a player, that voice must have been the last evil target. But I know not ALL foes are necessarily evil… and hiding is certainly a tactic cutthroats and thieves would use so I post.
Asherick acknowledges Hytogg with a quick nod, "Understood..."But wanting to make certain there are no more hostiles... Asherick gives the butchery a once over quick search looking for anyone who might be hidden and to get some clue as to what 'work' the deserters were up to in the butchery after their storefront was closed ...so late at night like it is.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Then he draws his sword turning to head for the previous hallway and the inquiring voice upstairs...
In reply Megan posts this…
Looking round the slaughter floor, there seems to be... er... how to put this, something more than bits of pig and cow. Some unidentified cuts of meat that don't seem to fit with the carcasses hanging from the hooks. And then Risdin's foot squelches on something and looking down he finds that he is standing on a human hand! One that is not attached to the rest of the human being.
Hytogg, things got a bit confused and you weren't certain of a clear shot... whilst magic missiles don't miss, they do travel in straight lines twixt wand and target!
Light comes from the top of the stairs as someone opens a door at the top.
"Can't you buggers work quietly down there?" says a rather angry voice.
Here perhaps I as a player jumped to a conclusion.. that there were people being butchered and sold as meat to the populous, As "personally" I would find that most abhorrent! Megan did not call for a perception roll for us all to see what Risdin had run across.. but I figured Ashe was also searching the room so there was a likely chance he would notice what the paladin of Abadar found.
I posted this…
Perception {to notice Risdin's handy discovery...} 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15Asherick rounds on the 'arrested' ...murderers, his handsome face and shock white hair framing his smoldering frosty blue eyes... a Black Fury of Righteous Wrath clear in his expression!
"You murderous, Monstrous, Black-Hearted, FIENDS... I should EXECUTE you ALL where you stand... you Verminous Filth! But... I have... Orders to bring you in... alive. Pray to whatever dark gods you venerate in thanks - for those ORDERS are ALL that has spared your misbegotten lives this day!!! How many innocents have you slaughtered you Sons of Demon Dogs?"
He pauses his fury still building... his left gauntleted fist gripping tightly in his rage on the hilt of his sword... the desire to end these wicked lives strong in his heart...!!!
Turning away from them he looks at Shakhan, "Shakhan! Keep close watch on them... any... and I mean ANY excuse... spare them NO MERCY!"
Asherick strides past picking up a piece of the grizzly evidence as he goes with his shield hand and proceeds out into the hallway making his way toward the stairs leading up. A grim and determined set in his shoulders his cloak fluttering with each fell step...
Asherick alters his course briefly to retrieve the...'spare hand' spearing it on the tip of his longsword carrying his grizzly evidence with him as he makes for the stairs and his confrontation with the last evil opponent….
Megan replied with this…
People going upstairs: The door at the top of the stairs is half-open, light shining from behind a figure standing there, longsword in hand. With the light behind him it's hard to make out much, but you can see that he's handsome and wearing a Korvosan Guard uniform.
I replied …
Asherick addresses the figure, "Corporal Verik Vancaskerkin? I am {Sir} 'Ensign' Asherick Whiteplume of the Korvosan Guard... Paladin of the Inheritor - Holy IOMEDAE! My men and I have apprehended your barbarous murdering men from killing the citizens of Korvosa and butchering them like common cattle for the sale of their flesh in the market streets to the unaware citizenry of Korvosa! YOU are under arrest for desertion and conspiracy for murder most foul! Surrender and I promise you will get a fair trial for your murderous crimes against the citizenry of fair Korvosa!"With that Ashe flicks the tip of his sword tossing the grizzly evidence at the figure...
"Resist and it will be my pleasure to put you DOWN with ALL NEEDED FORCE!!!"
I expected to have roll for initiative and fight the - likely highest level foe there on the stairs. I expected him to curse that his twisted plot was reveal… that being killing people then giving their flesh away as food for some twisted joke or even more sinester purpose. He was the last evil opponent in the place .
I was surprised at Megan’s response.
"MURDER??? says the handsome fellow, in obvious shock. He looks at the grisly 'evidence' with horror, and drops his longsword with a clatter.
"I am no party to murder! With things going to hell I felt of more use to the citizens of Korvosa supplying them with free meat... but the only source of that meat has been livestock. I... I don't know what to say."
I was kinda confused… this was not the words of an evil mastermind of twisted goals.
I posted…
Asherick looks the man in the eye and ponders his words...But, the evident dropping of his weapon convincing him at least of the Korvoasn Officer's desire to not fight at least even if Ashe is not sure he is totally innocent of whatever his men have been doing... Though offering free meat to the public in such times of crisis is a noble and generous deed - not one likely to come from the black-hearted. But, THAT is not for Ashe to decide... it is in the hands of the Korvosan Military Tribunal!
"Very well 'Corporal', a wise choice! Give me your word as a Korvosan Guard Officer that you will not cause trouble, come peacefully and not try to escape... and I'll not do thee the indignity of being bound like a common crook!"
Ashe steps forward with the point of his sword to slide the officer's sword bask with him and warily pick it up to sheath it into his hip quiver with the other confiscated longsword.
Ashe waits his reply.
Quote:
I was suspicious but he had dropped his weapon … not the actions of an evil mastermind.. but I knew there were 5 evil foes in the building … not just four.
Megan replied with this
Sorry, Ashe, I was giggling too much at the commentary...Asherick & others upstairs: The fellow looks somewhat downcast.
"Yes," he says. "I'll give you my word, not that it is worth much now."
Shakhan, I regret to say that your victim has had a childish accident (you are so intimidating that he has wet himself).
"G... giving meat t..t..to the p..poor," he whimpers. "F..funded it b..by doing c..c...contract mercenary... jobs. P...Please don't hurt me any more."
So.. I was confused. I almost detected evil upon him again… but it seemed evident that he was not evil, and I havd been badgering Megan for replies to question and detections I did not want to be a twit and ask again considering that her posts started to slow down. So I assumed… either his evil was very small or there was another foe upstairs, but HE Vankaskerkin for the moment was not a threat unamred as he was so I felt a detailed investigation of the upstairs would reveal some other foes that was hiding.
So I posted…
Asherick looks at 'Corporal' Vancaskerkin and ponders him closely. Then his voice softens and his tone becomes admonishing... not harsh or scolding, "Corporal Vancaskerkin, only YOU can decide whether your word of Honor has worth. I'm giving you the chance to prove that worth. Most 'failings' of personal honor and character spring from ourselves letting the importance of our own selfish needs overrule what we already know to be just and true. But, one mistake of judgment need not ruin your entire life! We do not get up one morning and decide we will be honest and just the rest of our lives... it is a constant struggle to walk such a path... full of distractions and temptations to serve ourselves rather than do what is best for our fellow sentient. But you are the author of your actions... YOU can win back your honor... if that is what you truly desire! Do not give up hope in that... for that is what the forces of avarice and wickedness use to start the 'desperate one' down the path to evil and self-destruction."
He nods solemnly to the corporal and gestures kindly for him to pass by him on the stairs down to the main room.
Then Ashe turns to Una and shakes his head in the negative, "I don't think that will be needed, for the Corporal, sniper."Then Ashe announces, "Shakhan! 'Corporal' Vancaskerkin is on his way down he has surrendered... he is not to be bound. He has given his word to come quietly... place him with the others and watch them all. Paladin Aramak! Would you please begin searching the butchery for the rest of the slain man's corpse? I'm going to search 'Corporal's office and will be right down to assist... momentarily."
Ashe looks over at Hytogg and Una...walking off to 'chat' a curious look on his face thinking, {Now's not really the time for a chat... but...}
Ashe says to them, "Uhm... when you two are done some help searching the upstairs and the rest of the building would be appreciated...?"
With that Asherick, after the 'corporal' is down the stairs, sheaths his longsword and searches the upstairs areas... collecting any papers or valuables he finds.
Perception: Take 10! 10 + 2 = 12
I know Ashe did not have the best of perceptions at the time and Asked for the party to help. Honestly with that perception roll I was expecting to get sneak attacked.
But Megan posted this…
Una: permission granted, you may wish to await your next level-up to switch things around.Whiteplume, Hytogg & Una: Vancaskerkin looks rather embarrassed as he listens to Whiteplume's speech.
"When the King died and everything went... wild, my girlfriend suggested that I left the Guard and ensured a steady supply of meat to this neighbourhood. I come from a poor background myself, so what she said made sense... and her previous suggestions have always been to my advantage. I honestly don't know anything about any other unpleasantness going on here, if there has been such it was without my knowledge or consent."
He then goes downstairs as directed...
Meanwhile, Hytogg peers round the door, catching a glimpse of a large round table strewn with playing cards and wine bottles, before Una calls him away to share her concerns.
Downstairs, Shakhan's prisoner is rather more interested in checking his, er, bits for damage than anything else, but mumbles "Dunno. Someone as someone else wanted dead. Not my concern, I usta be a butcher afore I joined up, haven't been outta the shop for a while."
Whiteplume then goes to take a look around.
The first room beyond the door (B7) has a round table surrounded by four wooden chairs. A stack of cards sits on the tabletop. A cabinet to the southwest hangs open, a tangle of dirty clothes and blankets within. Four thin bedrolls lie rolled up against the north wall. The windows overlook the street below, and there's one door in the south wall, which is closed.
Updated map
I was even more convinced that Verik was not the source of evil I had detected but was perplexed… where was the evil person?
So I posted this..
Asherick nods accepting the 'Corporals' tale... mindful to point out the fact to Marshal Kroft to question Verik on his girlfriend's identity, thinking, {... a most persuasive women to make an Officer abandon his post during a time of crisis! But men have always been... manipulable by the women close to their hearts... nothing new or sinister about that!}Ashe collects the severed hand and wraps it in some of the cloth he uses to bind wounds with as he searches the room. He kicks through the blankets in the cabinet to make sure nothing is concealed under the pile and casually looks under the bedrolls briefly.
Then Asherick... in a moment of 'adventurer paranoia', detects evil scanning the entire room. Turning to the door he also detects evil beyond the door before drawing his sword and opening the door, to search that room as well. Just in case the evil he detected up here... was not Verik!
Megan’s next post confused me or perhaps I did not read it closely enough… either way I got the wrong impression…
Hytogg: Muttering, you draw a card.Whiteplume: Your detect evil comes up blank, or at least, just the people whom you have already identified.
You go to look in the far room.Updated map
A single large desk stands in the eastern part of this large office, transformed into a makeshift bed by a bedroll and several blankets and pillows. A table and three chairs sit to the west; several papers lie strewn over the table's surface and a chamberpot sits under it. One of the papers is pinned to the tabletop by an exquisite silver dagger.
I took from what she posted that all the sources of evil I detected were still in their relative positions when I found them the first time I detected evil. Which had me confused as Verik was clearly Not upstairs anymore.
But that is not actually what she was meaning - clearly from the discussion that ensued. I almost wlaked back to detect evil upon Verik directly thinking maybe he was only faintly evil.
As for what she described in the room I felt ‘exquiste Quality dagger meant ‘enchantable’ – possibly so I decided to handle it with caution… something about the dagger being thrust into the table top set off my many years of gaming experience and made me suspicious. I can’t tell you what about it did that.. but it did. Again had it been sheathed and lying on the table or just in some personal gear in the room I don’t think my warning bells would have triggered. It just struck me as… poignant.
I had not been attacked and there were no obvious foes even if I missed their Stealth roll with perception I figured they were not going to attack as clearly we had the upper hand. Plus the party was grumbling about wasting time so I let it go.
I posted this not expecting anything…
Ashe enters the room searching about for any hiding persons. Then his makes his way to the Desk-turned bed checking its drawers for anything of note or valuable. Turning toward the table Ashe will give a cursory look at the papers reading to see what they entail before gathering them all up neatly. The Ornate Silver dagger stuck in the table top he will examine for its make and smiths mark but not touch it.Again, 'Pathfinder Adventurer Paranoia', niggles at the back of his mind... he has no way to determine if the dagger is magical... or worse cursed...
Ashe using his sword's edge hooks the crossguard of the dagger on his blade an pries it from the table top then drops it into his hip quiver, detecting evil specifically upon it. All without touching it himself.
Rolling up the papers into a scroll tube Ashe turns to leave the room.
Perception - Search the room 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Detect Evil specifically upon the Dagger - MV action for the full 3rd effect.
I had no idea the debate this would provoke. This is what I was thinking at the time. Admittedly, there were assumptions on my part and misinterpetations as well - but there it is..
This was my ooc reply to the matter.
Megan said that when I scanned outside the room that there were no other sources that I did not detect before. When I entered the room I saw the silver dagger - I was planning on suggesting someone make use of it as a precaution. The Korvosa book tells in the player info section that the Academae {the major wizard's training school} demands its students summon imps as part of their graduation prerequisites, and that FLOCKS of the fiendish creatures stalk the roofs and streets of Korvosa... often fought by the flocks of Pseudo-dragons that hunt them and also roost in the city. I have no idea if that is an issue in the module though. It just seemed a wise precaution that a native of the city would suggest to obvious foreigners to Korvosa - devils need silver to hurt. There is also a hint that lycanthropes may haunt some places in town.
I almost did not choose to detect evil on the dagger at all thinking it a pointless matter... I figured it might be magical, it was described as ornate and that could mean it was masterworked and potentially magical... but evil... that really shocked to me! I've not run into many cursed items before in pathfinder... but thats an assumption it could just have an evil enchantment - like unholy or somesuch. But I began questioning weather Verik was evil at all when he did not react the way I expected... and Megan posted that I detected the same locations of evil as before... but verick was no longer upstairs. I was not sure if that was an oversight or intentional.
I almost detected evil on Verik twice when he surrendered {Asherick looks the man in the eye and ponders his words...; and Asherick looks at 'Corporal' Vancaskerkin and ponders him closely...} as he did not react the way I had expected... I figured if he were the gang leader of murderers he'd have to be fought to be subdued; but decided I'd be wasting time with info Megan had already provided. The evidence was only to force his hand instead risk him trying to bluff his way out {ie 'Darn they know we've killed someone might as well fight my way out...'} sort of, Ashe does not have a good sense motive bonus...yet. At least that was my logic. I hoped he'd surrender but I figured being their leader he would know all about any misdeeds of his men... probably under his orders and Verik would have to be fought.
Fighting him on the stairs would have been a pain only one attacker at a time. Ashe knows he has the best armor so it should be him. Ashe didn't want Shakhan to give up watching the other prisoners him being our other strong fighter. Risdin seems more of a ranged combatant... but I could be wrong about that. Just Ashe's misfortune that no one else has a reach weapon... or seems particularly interested in 'thinking outside the box of their familiarity'. He doesn't hold that against them... after all HE IS the outsider to the group! I'll admit it was a risky thing stepping up to fight the leader alone - as likely he would be tougher than the others... but Ashe hoped Hytogg would heal him as needed to win if/when it turned into a fight. Plus with your crossbow it might have been even easier.
Didn't turn out that way though! lol! So this was my train 'wreak' of thought' lol!
This was the first part of my ‘seemingly’ using out of character knowledge. You can read the rest of the commentary on your own.
The Second case was in the same scene…
Megan posted this…
Fascinating to see what is going on in everybody's minds! Gives me a lot to live up to, running the game for you. But if you enjoy this 'over the table talk' would you like an OOC thread to indulge in it, so as not to clutter up the game thread?
Right. Hytogg, if you cast a detect magic on the dagger, it shows as somewhat magical but you cannot tell the nature of the enchantment.
Whiteplume, you said you want to detect evil on Verik Vancaskerkin, yes? He registers as not evil.
Those who wish to search the slaughterhouse (B4 on the map) find that it operated thus: animals are killed in the northwest corner of the room after being led in from the holding pens, then hung from hooks and wheeled over the grate to be bled, skinned, and butchered. The blood and the majority of the entrails are allowed to slop through the grate into the pit below. Once the animal is prepared, it is allowed to soak in the boiling water and then the cool water to clean the carcass and slow decay, and is then wheeled over to the blocks to be butchered.
Although pretty icky, it's apparent that the grating in the southwest corner through which animals are bled out can be lifted... and more tellingly, your captives show unease when you investigate that part of the room.
Which said to me that these villains had concealed more of their foul incriminating evidence under the offal grates!
So Ashe went there and checked specifically for evidence.
I remembered as a player in the “The Temple of Elemental Evil”. In the Elemental fire temple… if you did not search under the hot coals in the charcoal pit you missed the powerful magical weapon that was concealed there [sorry for the spoiler].
So anytime a DM asks me that – “The pit is Very messy, Dirty, Foul and Very deep are you going to continue digging in the filth/coals /trash /slime?”
I always say YES! Is that metagameing? Perhaps… I’ll admit. But I prefer to think of it as being a through experienced gamer.
When Ashe found the evidence of more corpses Una assumed Ashe was somehow in cahoots with these villains. As a player I was a bit shocked by this accusation after all we all saw the same post by Megan. But there it is.

            Hytogg had many issues.
He wanted to be a mystic theurge and going Clr2/Wiz2 when everyone else is level 4 sucks early on and doesn't pick up steam till level 10.
He felt a bit useless since Ashe was just as effective a healer at that level. The fact that our reasonably optimised party generally trashed the AP encounters did not help.
the second was he wanted to be the knowledge guru. which worked with being a high int wizard, but his main issues were Ashe's ability to fabricate ways to come up with side hooks or solve problems with his char fluff.
a few examples
.Hated that Ashe seems to know all the players personally. The queen, his UNCLE the leader of the Korvosan Guard, the high level elven ambassador.
An ashes ranks in alchemy (which I side with ashe on that one. you put ranks in a skill, then fine) annoyed him.
I got a lot of PM's about the 'passive aggressive' ways Ashe drives the story.
Oh, and the fact Ashe effectively got Majenko REALLY annoyed him.
Again, no fault of Ashe's. Megan made is quite clear the Pseudo dragon was keen to tag along if someone was willing to befriend him.
My previous mentioned issues with Ashe, occasionally came up (re: having more skill than your ranks would allow) but in all honesty I was at a real low point in my life. 8 months unemployment, savings gone and 3 young kids does that. not an issue now. I am back in a good job and am much happier.
the upshod of Ashe's char is it allows longer RP interplays between Megans story posts.

I personally havent had any issues with Ashe since ive been playing.. When a character has an above average int it doesn't bother me to much for them to think outside the box.. Im easy going though mostly just happy to have a chance to game on here since my RL games are all but gone these days..

This is a response to both Varrel and Ashe's long post. While I congratulate Ashe on his memory/record-keeping, the purpose of my last post was not to drum up drama or to make any accusations. There are a variety of situations that have been detailed by others which we do not need to rehash. My only intent in the previous post was to indicate Una's frequent emotional states as a result of her perceptions, which are (like the perceptions of most people) often deeply and inherently flawed.
No characters here are perfect people. They are not designed or intended to be. (That would take a great deal of fun out of it.)

Yeah, I'm sorry Una.. I meant to remark in my above post that I also didn't want to rehash old arguments and misrepresentations... and in no way was angry about the past dispute..more embarrassed is how I really feel. But that got lost in my made cutting a pasting... didn't want to get into the realm of tldr {probabaly still went there anyways}.
I'll be the first to admit.. I've made mistakes in some of the things I've done with Ashe... I wanted to try to portray that he has three glaring flaws at least as I see them.
1. Ashe is too interest6ed in fixing things and being helpful. He sees ignorance as as much a foe as an evil knight so.. he gets ...I guess lectury in trying to share his knowledge and experience with those around him. Not because he thinks he's better than them but he.. I guess mistakenly thinks what he has to say has merit that might be useful. {Shrug}.. the proof is in the reactions... people don't like it. Ashe feels the lawful and organized way is the best way to do ANYTHING and how best to orchestrate that than with informed dialogue so everyone's on the same page.
2. Ashe is utterly unconcerned for his own personal well-being. If he felt the only way to save an innocent soul within his power was to storm the very gates of hell.. he'd do it without a trace of fear. He'd have what he considered a plan and a method to accomplish his goals.. but if he had to stand alone to do it he would not falter nor turn aside. Unfortunately that lends to his attitude if the party won't stand for what I feel to be justice and truth.. I'll do so on my own if need be. Thats not very condusive to party cohesion.. its not that he thinks he better than anyone ..but that he is completely willing to die trying to do the right thing if that is what is required. I guess its a serious HERO complex! Not that he wants to be seens as the hero... but that regardless of what ANYONE else thinks, Ashe will do what he feels is the proper legendary and heroic thing to do in EVERY case... even if it means his death. He won't proceed foolishly but he will act with an almost suicidal boldness to stand and if need be die for what he believes is a worthy cause. If someone came to him and asked him to join a crusade into Geb to steal away Arazni the Mummy Queen and once servitor of Aroden Ashe would ALL be GUNG-HO all the way - if a good or even passable plan was presented.. regardless of the danger. Its a worthy cause. This hero complex makes him... sometimes hard to reason with. "Needs of the many outweigh the needs or life of the one..." Strangely enough that same argument might be used to dissuade him from a overly bold action.
3. Ashe's compassion and mercy sometimes get the better of him. He is sometimes too willing to offer mercy or give a questionable wicked heart a chance at redemption. His compassion may very-well one day be his undoing. Ashe is a staunch supporter of fighting for justice.. but his is ever looking for the potential good in others and trying to turn them away from evil to the path of redemption. This is oft because many times his foes give him no choice but to kill them... or when in those rare occasions his righteous heart is incensed with rage over the unrepentant evil he sees inflicted on the innocent. It is then he becomes a terrible slayer... and later on he grieves in shame over such an awakened bloodlust.
These are the personality flaws I've tried to put into Ashe.. sometimes I'm successful but of late it seems they are misinterpreted.
Again I guess the proof of any of my attempts is in the results...
The jury is still out.

Online campaigns are tough. You pull together people who have different perceptions of how the game should be played to join in a campaign that is difficult to run online, often lacking all the usual interplay between the individuals and DM that builds cohesion and allows a DM to set their parameters.
I have had more trouble dealing with DMs than players in these online games. I DM a lot for my home group, which is why I look to play online. It's so rare I get to play. It's very hard to find a DM that will run a game long-term at a good pace online. You have to find the best option you can in the pool.
I also adjudicate and run games differently than 99% of the DMs I play with. Hard to get used to someone else's DM style. Different player styles I can handle. You have to be able to when you DM.
The one thing I've noticed online is the honor system is all you have to rely on with players. Otherwise you would be wasting your time in posting conflicts with a player or acting as arbitrator in player vs. player conflicts. None of that is any fun. If I have a serious issue or aren't having fun, I generally thank the DM for their time and leave. Whether I agree with DM or not, I always appreciate them running a game given it is often a thankless endeavor requiring more prep work than many player's realize.

Ok… breakdown of Ashe’s Healing skill modifiers. This is how it has been explained to me by a venture captain. I’ll not name names as that would be crude but its possible he may have been mistaken.
Ashe – Ranks {+1}, Class {+3}, Wisdom Modifier {+1}
A Healer’s Kit – Masterwork, is merely a tool that is masterwork +2 {circumstance}
Out of the Pathfinder Companion: Adventurer’s Armory {p.13} – Surgeon’s Tools states… “When in conjunction with a healer’s kit, surgeon’s tools raise the kit’s bonus to a +3 circumstance bonus on heal checks”
So Surgeon’s Tool +3 {circumstance}
In the Pathfinder core Rules p.208, Bonus types… “Usually, a bonus has a type that indicates how the spell grants the bonus. The important aspect of bonus type is that bonuses of the same type don’t generally stack. With the exception of dodge bonuses, most circumstance bonuses, and racial bonuses, only the better bonus of a given type works.”
Pathfinder Companion: Adventurer’s Armory {p. 9} – Bloodblock & Bodybalm.
Bloodblock – “Using a dose gives you a +5 {alchemical} bonus on Heal checks for providing first aid, treating wounds made by caltrops or similar objects or treating deadly wounds.”
Bodybalm – “When this pungent yellow powder is boiled in water and given to a creature to drink, it provides the attending healer a +5 {alchemical} bonus on Heal checks for providing long-term care, treating poison, and treating disease.”
Then Ashe recovered a Set of Books from Ryloth’s Lair in the Dead Warrens; Tomes on Necromancy, Golem Creation and Diseases providing a +2 {circumstance} Knowledge – {Heal} Disease & {Knowledge: Arcana} Necromancy.
Total: +1{Ranks}, +3 {Class}, +1{Wisdom}, +5{Healer’s Kit-Mw w/Surgeon’s tools}, +5{Bloodblock or Bodybalm ‘with both all aspects of the Heal skill are covered but only one applies at a time}, +2{Treat Disease} = +10 {standard}, +15{Bloodblock or Bodybalm}, +17{Treat Diseases}
Megan if this is incorrect please let me know… and I’ll adjust.

Surgeon's tools. Interesting. That's the part I was missing. So that's from the Adventurer's Armory. Circumstance bonuses from different sources do stack. I wanted to see what I was missing. I don't use a lot of gear-based bonuses.

Thank you for the breakdown, Ashe.
However, I read "When in conjunction with a healer's kit, surgeon's tools raise the kit's bonus to a +3 circumstance bonus on Heal checks" (Adventurer's Armoury) to mean that they raise the regular +2 bonus to a +3, rather than stack with it.
What does everyone else think?

You are correct, Megan. So that would be +13. Minor, but noteworthy difference.
Pulled from the Paizo PRD:
Surgeon's Tools
Price 20 gp; Weight 5 lbs.
When used in conjunction with a healer's kit, surgeon's tools raise the kit's bonus to a +3 circumstance bonus on Heal checks to treat wounds or deadly wounds.

Asherick Whiteplume

Ah.. Oh.. I missed something then. I specifically bought Ashe's Healer's kits as a masterwork kit.. thats 50gp more than the usual Healer's kit which is 50gp.. total cost 100gp.
So Ashe's kit should give a +4 bonus not just a +2. If the Surgeon's tools were added to my numbers that would be a total of +7!
However, I can see Megan's point... and concede to her interpretation as likely what was meant by the write-up for the surgeon's tools.
However, the kit is STILL masterworked with the Surgeon's tools.. so the modifier would STILL be +5.
No change.. is that not correct?

Deriven Firelion

There are not masterwork healer kits as far as I know. Perhaps you can find one and let us know where to look. A healer kit is use-based. 10 uses per kit. MW does not apply as far as I know.
Several common items already count as masterwork tools for particular skills. These are the alchemist's lab, climber's kit, disguise kit, healer's kit, masterwork musical instrument, and masterwork thieves' tools. Therefore, there is no masterwork climber's kit, masterwork healer's kit, and so on—those items are already the best available for general checks with the relevant skill.
Did they amend a rule somewhere? Perhaps Megan would allow MW Surgeon's Tools to provide some additional bonus. I don't think they normally allow that type of increase. I can see a fine set of surgical tools adding a bit.

Oh! Where is that quote from? I've never seen that before.
Cause I know in other adventure paths I've played... there have been discovered masterwork disguise kits and healer's kits before. I'm not trying to get over just know exactly what the rules say and where -so I can inform MY players of games I run.

            From the PRD, Ultimate Equipmment:
Masterwork Tool
Price 50 gp; Weight 1 lb.
This tool is perfect for its intended job. It grants a +2 circumstance bonus on a related skill check (if any). The bonuses provided by multiple masterwork items do not stack.
Some skills have no appropriate tool or masterwork tool—no nonmagical item exists that grants a bonus for all uses of that skill. For example, just because a certain perfume is favored by local nobles (granting a +2 circumstance bonus on Diplomacy checks to influence them) doesn't mean that perfume has the same effect on a member of the thieves' guild, a foreign berserker, or a medusa. Likewise, just because a fake beard woven by dwarves out of the beards of famous dwarves may grant a +2 circumstance bonus on Use Magic Device checks to emulate the dwarven race doesn't mean the beard has any effect on using that skill to activate elven items or paladin items, or to decipher a written spell.
Individual GMs may want to allow masterwork tools for other skills at the listed cost. The circumstance bonus for such a tool should never be more than +2. The tool should either have a limited number of uses (such as the disguise and healer's kits) or only apply to certain aspects of the skill (such as the balancing pole's bonus on Acrobatics checks to traverse a narrow surface or the magnifying glass's bonus on Appraise checks for detailed items).

Ah! Ok. I don't usually look at the SRD and I don't own the Ultimate Equipment. I beleive that is a rules change since it came out long after any of the Adventure Paths that feature 'now' restricted masterwork equipment - like masterwork healer's kits. Thanks Thom! I'll adjust Ashe's numbers.
As for the idea that surgeons tool's could be masterwork.. I'm not thinking that would help as Healer's kits cannot be masterworked and Surgeon's tools only increase its bonus to +3.
...And if Megan doesn't mind take back my extra 50gp I spent on it.

Megan Robertson
I will allow masterwork surgeon's tools with the appropriate bonus, but not a masterwork healer's kit in the light of the information provided here.
Ashe, did you purchase your surgeon's tools somewhere? If so, would you like to retroactively spend to take them up to masterwork?

Well we met 'A' vampire... but I wonder why the cover of the module shows the party fighting multiple vampires? Ah well perhaps we'll learn more as the module proceeds.

            Got a question Megan.
How long has it been since we attacked the Priests on the catwalk?
Ashe drank a Potion of Expeditious Retreat just before that fight with the priests on the catwalk above the plague vats.
Is the potion still in effect?

I'm going to start preparing more offense. Deriven is not the type to be acting mercifully to evil beings. If he has to do the killing himself, that's what he's going to do. Right now I don't have the offensive power to carry out the death of Andasian. Have to adjust my spell list next bit of downtime. Too many support spells.

I'm not doing it because of any concern about the party. I'm doing it because I'm tired of playing out of character. I assumed the players in the group would handle the killing part. It seems he will have to do it himself. I'm going to build more offensive from here on out. I'm not interested in an Iomedaen that wanders around knocking people out.
If this Lady Andasian has not heard us outside her door discussing this matter, I will be quite surprised. Clerics generally have good perception by virtue of their wisdom alone. If she is sitting there waiting to be charged, I will be quite surprised.

Holy Vindicator all the way!
By the way- Varrel is 100% down for execution.
But she might have some info first.

How do you enter Eldritch Knight at lvl 3?
*The Scryer subschool gets you the 3rd-level SLA (based on Clairaudience/Clairvoyance) that qualifies you. Otherwise you have to be a vanilla Aasimar, I believe.
This has been faq'd and is legal!!!
Puts you on more even terms for power and let's you be an EK earlier

Uhm.. ok. Yes, Ashe's next level is Bard and the one after it will be Holy Vindicator.
Interesting Build idea for a EK... the one I'm playing in 'Rise of the Runelords' is Fig 2 / Wiz 5 / EK 2. Should max out at a lvl 17 casting power with a BaB of +14 at around 20th level.

So... Lady Andasian is a Hot Goth chick? Not surprised... no wonder the poor unfortunate - dead fool Rois Vindmel was entranced by her!

lol. She's likely a high priest... which is likely lvl 9.
False Life may indeed be on her list as a Cleric of Urgathoa {not sure though}...
I was expecting Ashe to be the one she targets for death... high priest has 5th level spells... meaning Slay Living. All my villain priest NPC's at 9th carry one... when I'm running games - its a touch attack after all. But perhaps Varrel has 'earned' that honor instead of Ashe?
But we still don't know what her initiative is.
Lets hope 'High Priest' is just a title and NOT indicative of her actual level... :)
Hmmm.. this is clearly a full blown temple.. I wonder if a Unhallow has been cast here... and what spell is in it if so? We didn't pass a Forbiddance, yet which would suck for the good characters - so maybe we're in luck and Andasian has not had time to add any temple magical wards and somesuch?
That's part of the reason you don't want to fight a cleric in their own temple.. they can give themselves advantages there that you can't easily overcome.

            DC for combat is -10
DC for door +5
Hallway 50 feet (doubt it is even this long) +5
DC for distracted to be generous for terrible conditions: +5
DC to hear combat in other room even 2 rounds with Ashe's paladin clanking around in full plate armor
Total DC: 5
A cleric who has spent no ranks in Perception would have to roll a 1 to fail to know combat did not occur in the other room. If they had spent ranks in Perception, they would have to roll a 1.
Be wary of this being an illusion or double of some kind. She may not be standing there waiting for us to kill her as easy as it was to hear us. Which means smite and spell wasted.
