Love, Mad Sweeney

Saxton is more Dorian Grey than Sweeney.

Going to have it that he can do a lot with his magic, BUT it can take weeks mouths years to reserch the kind of magic needed.

So he has some simple cantraps he can do, but bigger the effect more the work is needed.

So warding a safe house, could take a day say, and it will fade over time so needs to be redone.

Stalwart here, proposing Gothic.

She's a pure telepath. She won't speak out loud, and constantly picks up the surface thoughts of everyone around her. It's made her withdrawn and sullen -- a pure emo goth type. Even though she can use her telepathy to communicate, she rarely does so.

She's as much of a mental powerhouse as I could make her at this level. I like the thought that she's way more powerful than anyone would guess, but she's always very restrained. Complications would include a very strong personal code against divulging information that she picks up from people's stray thoughts. Although she generally feels that people suck, she doesn't share their ugly thoughts with others. However, people with fairly altruistic thoughts fascinate her, since they're so rare.

I have a feeling, that Mr Quinn may have cross paths with other PCs, in his years of travailing, if you showed him what you can do, he would keep you in mind should the need arise. His will not be as powerful as other PCs and is not much use in a fight unless he has lots of prep time. All times and spells he makes fade over time. He's more hero then super.

Tweaked skill points and swapped out Bluff for Climb in Skill Mastery. Still no super-movement--can't find what I'm willing to give up for it.

She's old, she might not be visibly aged much but perhaps a lifetime of injuries have left her only a stellar acrobat rather than a near-supernatural-level one. ;)

Stalwart, would you be willing to tone down the mind reading a little on Gothic? I like the concept of the character, but in a campaign like this, where mysteries and secrets are important, I can see it being a problem for her to have perception distance mind reading of everyone. Maybe dial the mind reading down to touch, and have the always on sense just be empathy? That could maybe still get to the disgust with people.

Made yet one more tweak -- realize Sneak Attack can't exceed PL damage, so it only improves her unarmed attack slightly, and a second rank is pointless. Took out the second rank and added in Assessment instead, which is a Widowy thing she should be able to do. Maybe I'll even pop out Sneak attack (it's not like there's a massive difference between DC 17 and DC 18) and put back Super-Movement at some point. ;) Or spend more skill points...

Sorry I keep posting tweaks. M&M does that to me.

The crunch for Brickhouse is coming soon. :)

No problem on tweaks. In fact, it is my standard practice to allow tweaks even after each of the first few encounters. Sometimes a character just doesn't quite play the way you think they would.

History:

Felix Marshall became a hero in the sixth grade.

But that was after being suspended for fighting. He had only been protecting other kids from a bully, but zero tolerance was zero tolerance. His mothers sat him down. Mama Lucy said he couldn't hit anybody. It was against the rules, and even if it was right, it was wrong. Then she just smiles and left the room. Mama Ana then took him and showed him a bunch of boxing matches. "There's two types of fighters. The kind who dance around and dodge until they get hit and then they drop. The other kind knows how to take hit after hit without going down. That was what I did when I boxed in college." Then they went to the gym.

When the suspension was over, everybody knew it was time for a rematch, and it came. Felix was for about nine minutes and didn't hit back once. He faked it a few times, but didn't land anything. When they broke it up, Felix was hella bruised and Denny didn't have a scratch. Denny took a permanent vacation and Felix got a day to recover.

Of course, that was before everything changed. His voice changed later that year. And it really changed. It turns out he was a mutant. His mothers took it in stride. Plastic windows held in the heat better anyway. It was pretty obvious that he was going to try to be a hero. Mama Ana pulled a few strings and got to take him to the fire training tower to figure out what he could do. She became his trainer. As a firefighter, she was tougher than most guys and pushed him hard.

Mama Lucy wasn't able to be as physical, but being in procurement helped out nonetheless. She researched the grey-market auctions of different types of super-gadgets. It was technically legal so long as it didn't involve weapons, but attracted a lot of unsavory types. Still, when you can get your son a super-suit for Christmas, it was all worth it.

On top of supporting him as a hero, they are supporting him. A small apartment in a dodgy section of town in exchange for community college and being smart about being a hero.

is there anything I need to touch up? Was wondering what exactly i would need else, but I still have points left to put into extra things

I think it is always a good idea to have some sort of movement power. I know you plan to have vehicles, but it can suck to be stuck at the bottom of a building when the action is on the roof.

cool I have enough PP left for superspeed at 1 rank, that gives me quickness, speed and one extra power like wall run!

Okay think I did this right 3 ranks in Leaping ( power feat Ricochet) and 1 for uncanny dodge(hearing) Kinda thinking I can later branch this into a more powerful version of Batroc the Leaper

Hmm. I'm not crazy about that. I've had Gothic for a long time, and that's always been one of her signature powers -- the ability to hear the surface thoughts of everyone around her. Now, there's some inherent drawbacks to it as I see it. The more people around her, the more everything becomes a confusing susurrus of stray thoughts. Further, it's not like she always is hearing something useful. Most of the time it's just random stream-of-consciousness stuff that has no bearing on anything.

So I'm totally willing to scale it back to either a lower DC or include some other inherent drawback. Actually, I wouldn't mind having a few other mental powers to add to her suite, so if there's some way to free up some points by limiting her mind reading while keeping the basic power intact, I'd be all for it.

One of the most extreme solutions would be to make it Unreliable -- which I would assume in this context would be that I gather useful information only when you the GM decide I do. Going this route, I can presume I'm always picking up the ambient thoughts of those around me, but never really gathering useful information unless you tell me someone's actively thinking of something that's useful/plot-related. And while I'll be aware of the other players' posted inner-monologues, Gothic's own self-imposed restrictions on using/sharing that sort of information should keep all that from getting out of hand.

What do you think about that?

You mean "Uncontrolled"? Unreliable would mean it was on and off half the time, which would drive you crazy, I would think. Uncontrolled would mean it is always on but you can't focus it? So you only get useful stuff when people fail a save and I say so?

That would be perfect. I mean, what GM would turn that down.

Update with the background for my inventor/gadgeteer archetype character.

Doctor Icarus:

Jebediah “Jeb” Halliwell is a freelance consultant, well known in the world of mechanical and electronic engineering. If there’s a problem your teams having trouble with for a project get Jeb in and he’ll crack it for you. There are of course far more renowned and skilled individuals such as Reed Richards and Tony Stark to name a few but they have their own companies and projects to keep them occupied in general.

Jeb has always dreamed of fighting crime as a superhero, deep down he takes it seriously but perhaps a little too serious. He’s spent the last few years creating custom pieces of technology with the intention of using them to fight crime as well as training in more mundane ways. But he’s been procrastinating, waiting to finish the next device, or until he is more confident in his training and abilities. But sooner or later something is going to give, a call to action and Jeb is going to answer. If possible I’d like to work with the GM so that whatever crime initially draws the PCs together Jeb will overhear it on his headquarters communication system while working on a suit of protective armour and that’ll be the day he finally dons his gear and strikes out to make a difference. So this will be his first appearance so to speak. If prefered that the group is already assembled I’d like to work out with another player when this happened recently.

Doctor Icarus fights with a particle-beam weapon or as he calls it his Pulse Energy Pistol or “Pepe” as he likes to call it, a belt that surrounds him with a forcefield and a jetpack that will hopefully help him get in and out of trouble. He’s got a whole host of half finished gadgets he’s imagined up to help him but the three listed above all have a genetic lock on them and will not function for anyone but him even if stolen, in fact they won’t even turn on.

Jeb does have an apartment but has spent more and more time in his secret headquarters where he works on his gadgets and goes over scenarios in his head. As well as it’s security system he has sealed the secret entrance off by several feet of reinforced concrette. He’s got a short range teleporter that can transport him to or from within three hundred feet of the base. He’s tried extending the range but although he’s got it up from two hundred feet to three hundred.

Jeb chooses the name Doctor Icarus during or after his first adventure in reference to not being completely ready with all his equipment despite a lot of consideration of the name of his Superhero Persona. Jeb will be a bit nervous about finally starting his superhero life and will cover this with some bluster.

Basic comedy relief in the flavor of My Favorite Martian and other shows that I saw once on Youtube or Comedy Central or something. Space alien with a low-level illusion to appear as a normal body-person. At it's core this character was made because someone said they'd never seen a character with the Ambidexterous feat ever be worth anything. Everything else fell into place after that. =)

Wanted to be sure you were aware that your skill ranks (ranks, not modifier) max out at 13 at PL 8; skills aren't capped at 8. You may well have built your character as you desired but since I noticed you had max 8 in everything I thought I'd be sure--especially since you're a skill monkey character. :)

I think this is the final tweak on Dottie. Did dump sneak attack for Slow Fall, limited to near surfaces. Some tweaks/cleanup to background.

PS: FYI going out of town tomorrow through Sunday, in case there are any updates on the recruitment in that time.

So I think I have a way to get the PC I wish.

Saxton has Magic>Mimic as his main power, BUT I did this to keep power balance and also not make a PC that can do just anything.

Fey Magic [8] [22pp] [22pp Total]
Feat: Dimensional [3 ALL] [3pp] [So works where needed]
Feat: Affects Insubstantial [2] [2pp] [on what ever]
Feat: Selective [1pp] [Can used on other players.

Array Power
Mimic [ALL Traits/powers] (5pp/r) [8]
Flaw: Distracting (-1pp/r) [He has to concentrate using his magic]
Flaw: Uncontrolled [GM Control outcome] (-1pp/r)
(The GM says if a something CAN be done with magic. I ask can I and GM say yes/no or other... how long it will take to cast spell and whats needed TO cast the spell. Last of all IF it worked. In this way the GM has control of what can and cant be done. be it mimic a power or any other things with a Spells. This is to stop miss use and have powered balance as well as a plot tool to help things move along.
Flaw: Fades (-1pp/r) [No magic is forever, so the GM can also say how long it last. Etc, another check on power level]

Well that was my thinking GM.

I'll be posting my initial build today, making it on mythweavers. Might be kinda late but I'm going to focus mostly on strength and mobility. Punching and grappline hooks and fist-powered super jump plus a bit of defense for the gauntlets. Also hes gonna have a pretty high intelligence and some inventing/analyzing capabilities.

I'm at school then I got work but after that I'm gonna hammer it out, its pretty much done, so Imma post it soon as possible.

Pancic/Saxton, I'm not sure I understand exactly what we are trying to accomplish with his magic. What are his normal kind of magic tricks? Does he use any sort of equipment? Is there another fictional magician he resembles? I'm betting we can find the right mix of powers, power feats, and limitations to make it make sense, but it isn't clear to me right now what the end result is supposed to look like.

Unfortunately my work/prepping to run dragon mountain schedule has me limited on time to make a character, so I am going to withdraw my interest. Thank you, and good luck to all!

Slight adaptation on Brickhouse.

GM SuperTumbler wrote:

Basically a John Constantine like PC.

My problem is M&M is very costume superhero fedicated. So powers are based around the core cartoon concept. Powers are very specific to that. Thuse kind of heros tend to be "power on" and fight. Where as john neefs set up time, he needs to know the spell to craft and then cast. His magic has the potential to be very powerful BUT flexible BUT is hard and complicated to craft and use. Its not just 'power on" and fight unless hes had time to get ready. The bigger the effect the longer the prep time and higher the cost.

If this games going to be a roof top costumed hero romp, then Saxton my not fit in, but you said it was a low power investigational game where i feel saxton will it.

Exsample 1

Say the party needs info on a death of an NPC, saxtion says.

"I know a spell that lets you talk to the dead, we can ask three questions. But i need the dead body, and a full night to work it"

You give a DC fir it working and we try.

Exsample 2

Party locked in a cell key outside

Saxton says "i can levitate the key here, spell takes a min to cast BUT every one will see the magic" noticeable etc.

That way he can cast spells but others see effect.

Thats how i see it working.

One last thing ANY power anothet PC has or gsme braking powers he cant do

The othere root is to biuld like the warlock in pathfinder with a few key magic like powers.

I definitely think the character fits, I'm just stuggling with the build a little. I think what you are envisioning would be best done with the Ritualist Feat, a high Knowledge (Arcane), and lots of Luck points to allow you to Jury Rig things when necessary.

I did that in the biuld maxed ach skill and luck etc
But its the effect thats hard to define.

Ok jury rig seems to be the way to go, ill rebuild later today GM thanks gor feed back.

Added current look and hopefully future look with the right build, kinda want a suit to glide and provide resistance with a cowl and special lenses as well as some weapons. Seriously going to try a Batman/Moon Knight vibe

That would be perfect. I mean, what GM would turn that down.

Yes, I meant Uncontrolled -- somehow between tabbing back and forth I got my drawbacks confused.

But yes, I think that would be a good compromise -- though perhaps I'll need to get a "mental probe" power at some point (or just when I spend Hero Points) to dig deeper and pull out the information I may seek. Although, Gothic's not that sort of telepath who would enjoy such a thing.

But knowing that she's constantly picking up the surface thoughts of people even though its information-gathering abilities are limited, defaulting to letting you decide when I glean some vital bit of info to keep the story moving, I think that's a good way to handle this.

That also freed up some points, so I'm taking a figment/illusion power to let her manipulate people by making them see what she wants them to. So here's what I got:

So here ya go, I present to you Legend (name changeable if someone has a better idea). I took equipment 4 times for the express purpose of building a base for the team to use, so once we have an official roster I would be happy for it to be used for anything that costs 20 or less.

Lemme know if there are any mistakes I made or anything you think I should change. My vision for the character was for somebody who is really smart, but approaches his problem in a brute force way (either literally with actual force, or with sheer brain power) not really considering the social and "political" nuance of everything. So he's a good lab geek, but stealth missions and going undercover and the like... not so much.

He's a recluse, but a recluse that's good at what he sets out to do. Which is either smash things, lift things, or analyze data. He lacks nuance or sublety, but mostly due to his lack of interacting with people.

Legend

Ok late to this recruitment and no skills in this system but I love superhero and marvel stuff.

Character concept: a man who is in a coma in a hospital but who manifests as a ghost like being who flies can pass through stuff basically a really stealthy fellow who has a hard time interacting but can sometimes move stuff if enough points left maybe some sort of supernatural attack
