"Unexpectedly, I find that vigilantism is not within the bounds of criminal activities I am intended to combat. However, it seems that I have misapprehended the nature of our relationships. Thank you for your input. We assure you it will be taken seriously and improvements will be made."

And with that the connection terminates.

Batman - Felix Marshal | Bruises/Wounds: 0/0; Hero Points 2/2; Conditions: None

Batman seems a bit stunned at the revelation and the hangup. "Well that went about as well as your average "I know all of your secrets but won't share anything about me" conversation goes. Obviously they are technically talented, but knows absolutely nothing about human interaction." He pauses, "Do you think it might have been an AI or an alien?"

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

To Doc, she giggles. "Did I? Well, don't take it personally, I was probably dodging the Feds."

As the conversation with "Charlie" ends, a broad smile creeps across her face, pleased as punch.

Then to Batman: "An AI... artificial intelligence? Huh. That might explain the canned responses. He seemed a bit... off, our Charlie."

She picks up the pen and scribbles something else on her hand. The wheels appear to be whirring (hypothetically, in her case, of course) in her mind. "Nite Owl, that Archimedes thing announced yesterday, is it on your phone?"

She shows her hand to each of them, trying to avoid any camera eyes in the room. She has written: Need talk somewhere - NO electronics/signals. Abandoned subway?

She pulls her glove over her hand. She pulls out her phone, checks to see if the address Charlie mentioned is indeed present, scans it, and then chucks the phone into the trash can from across the room. She also pulls the adamantine clawed glove from her inside jacket pocket and throws it onto the table. "There must be a tracer in it--he knew I had it."

male Human Eccentric Millionaire

'Yes it is" He says looking at her and nodding. He quickly takes apart his phone severing the chip in it that connects to his Wi-Fi. He then places it in one of his drawers.

"Well now if my secertary needs me it will be extremely hard to reach me!" he laughs as he then heads out. As he does he takes out a small note pad and begins to write on it.

Agreed we should meet somewhere that is safe. and just in case maybe Doc should look over any tech we have and give it a once over when we get there

Male Human Gadgeteer

Doc Icarus nods. He takes the pen and adds.

Not here, no point exposing how to open up bits of peoples gear in a place that could be bugged. Dottie fancy getting a hotel room?

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

Dottie pulls the sheet toward her. "Well maybe your secretary will be able to finally get some peace," she jokes to Xavier.

While writing (again paranoidly trying to conceal her writing from any camera eyes): "NO TECH. LEAVE ALL HERE. Or home. "

She draws an arrow toward "hotel room" and writes, "Has wifi, phones, + tvs."

She then circles NO TECH about twelve times, while looking at the group as if to say, "what part of this do you not understand?" "this guy can hijack cash registers."

"As our conference call is over," she says aloud, "How about we go for a walk?"

Batman - Felix Marshal | Bruises/Wounds: 0/0; Hero Points 2/2; Conditions: None

Batman pulls out his cellphone and removes the battery. He writes, "Get mylar bags. Pull power sources." After a moment, he adds, "Burn this paper when done."

He then retracts his suit into it's compact form and slips out the flat powercell.

male Human Eccentric Millionaire

No take the paper with us, you can get the message off the following pages with a bit of a pencil rub. Mylar bags are good. I do know a place we could go its got a little bit of tech, just a cash register. Meet me at Crazy Eds Collectibles and Games. Dude hates electronics He says as he laughs.

"I doubt it but ah well, I will catch you guys later I do have a meeting to attend. Those board members are still pissed about Archimedes getting purloined"

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

Dottie nods approvingly at Batman getting the gist.

At Xavier, she rolls her eyes, shakes her head vigorously, and recircles "this guy can hijack cash registers" and underlines "cash registers." She's also worried, given the oldskool 70s and 80s stuff they saw at the warehouse, that older collectibles wouldn't also be compromisable, and she doesn't have the technical knowledge to be sure.

She circles no tech about twelve more times until it nearly looks like it says "o tec". Her mind starts forming backup plans that involve knocking Nite Owl and Doc, who seem to be unable to grasp the concept of "absolutely no tech at all period," out and dragging them to an abandoned subway station, except she's not sure how best to move their bodies without drawing attention.

She scribbles. "Need go underground. On a boat. The country. A bunker."

"Speaking of, how is that guy who was nearly kidnapped faring? Home safe?"

She starts moving toward the exit of the room. Because Dottie is old and doesn't have a smartphone or computer, she has an actual subway map in her pocket (and it's sensible to be looking at a subway map if you're planning to leave). She examines it, trying to see if she can remember where some subway stations were say a few decades ago that aren't on the map now.

Intelligence: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10

She might, she might not. New York is a big city.

Dottie can remember tunnels and stations that are no longer in use, probably some that were never used.

That is a real thing. Big rabbit hole of internet reading to fall into.

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

"You know, I have a funny story about one of the first times I came to New York. I wanted to see all the tourist stuff, and a friend of mine insisted the place to start was Brooklyn. Which, note, was not a, what-do-you-call'em... hipster paradise at the time..."

She taps at an empty spot on her map toward the lower edge of Manhattan near the Brooklyn Bridge and shows it to the others. She is pointing to where the shut-down Worth Street station should be.

Btw, sorry to push away from the collectibles place, Nite Owl. I think that's a cool idea to go back to, especially since there's a theme of old 70s and 80s stuff that keeps popping up... but Dottie's getting super paranoid at the moment and is looking for a safe a place as possible to talk. Of course you all don't have to listen to her either. :)

Where do we want to go, folks? BTW sorry for disappearing for a few days, hit hard by a summer cold or something.

Male Human Gadgeteer

Icarus takes the pen again and writes down. If I can't bring any of my gear and it's specifically meant to be somewhere with no tech I'm not sure there's much point in me going. I'd help better just going somewhere else to make them expend more resources tracking me. There's a point when being cautious becomes crippling.

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

Dottie writes. Just to talk. Not forever. She rolls her eyes.

Tumbler, do we have news on how the engineer that was supposed to have been kidnapped--how is he doing?

Mr. Not kidnapped is back at work this morning. If people are hesitant about giving up their tech (understandable), I'd be willing to have someone spend a Hero Point for Nite Owl to have a clean room that is safe from electromagnetic intrusion, or for Dr. Icarus to set up a Dampening Field in his headquarters that would keep you beyond reach of surveillance/control. Whether Dottie would believe those were safe or not I'd leave up to her. Someone should probably get some Hero Points from Complications from all of this.

Male Human Gadgeteer

"Alright." He shrugs before relenting to Dotties plan. "Lets get this over with."

male Human Eccentric Millionaire

We could jam the signal with a couple of different devices, RF jammer for cell-based talk and an EMP to shut down eh local active tech. He writes holding up for them to see.

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

She pauses in the door jamb and looks at Nite Owl with considerable skepticism. How long would it take to set up--and where? Not here. She pauses, frowning. Don't you need a nuke to make an EMP? She's a little out of touch, shakes her head and shrugs.

"You know, I just remembered an appointment I had with someone. Any of the rest of you can join me if you wish. I'll check back with your office later to see if you have managed to schedule our committee meeting. If not, I'll head down toward the Brooklyn Bridge and do some sightseeing."

She steps out of the conference room and stops into Xavier Cole's main office suite and asks his secretary, "Would you please direct me to Gable Harnes' office?"

"Of course. Do you have one of our new phones? I can just pass the directions right to you if you do."

She holds up her own phone in anticipation.

I'm imagining this is a sort of bump share feature of the new phone. Just trying to make it snazzy. Of course, that will stymie Dottie.

Male Human Gadgeteer

Icarus heads off to stow his gear before a little glumly heading to the rendevous.

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

"I'm afraid I don't. It's embarrassing, but I've only just begun consulting for Mr. Cole, and didn't have a steady enough paycheck prior to afford a smart phone." She says 'smart phone' like it's a term she's still getting used to. Indeed, even the burner phone she had chucked in the trash was a plain old flipphone she'd bought from a streetvendor.

"See, things didn't end well between me and my last employer... he wanted me to 'consult' on things he had no place asking for. You know what some of those guys are like." She widens her eyes helplessly, to milk the sympathy. Bluff: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27

In my day, an executive assistant would have a whole skyscraper memorized and know everyone's whereabouts without even checking the mail. There was a reason they made good spies and informants. Shame if even they've been replaced by technology.

"I hate being so terribly old fashioned, but would you mind just giving me the room number?"

"No problem."

She jots a note on a sticky note and hands it to Dottie.

"That should get you where you need to go." (And indeed, it seems it will.)

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

"Thanks!" Dottie smiles and takes the slip. She will go (along with anyone else who wants to tagalong) visit the Archimedes engineer.

I'm doing this now in part to buy some time if you want to come up with alternate plans. Also think it might be time to learn more about Archimedes.

I'm assuming that Xavier/Nite Owl also knows quite a bit about how this tech works.

Dottie and company find Dr. Harnes in a large room with four walls full of massive monitors. He is watching various information streams about the usage of the new phone and software.

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

"Dr. Harnes, do you have a moment?" As she speaks, her eyes flicker along the monitors, though it's unlikely she would understand the information displayed.

Anyone else coming with?

Male Human Gadgeteer

Icarus is glumly going to stash his gear before going to the rendevous.

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

Well, this is taking place before "the rendezvous" and Nite Owl is looking into alternatives for said rendezvous, so it's up to you.

"I'm sorry I'm very bus...Oh, I'm sorry. I think that we met yesterday. What can I do for you this morning?"

He looks unhappy at the interruption at first, but then warms to you.

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

"Sorry to interrupt, I'm sure after yesterday you just want to get everything behind you. I'm following up on the attack, though--the police questioned you, I know, but the police often favor finding an obvious scapegoat to quickly close a case, rather than take the time to track down a harder-to-find culprit. I want to be sure neither you nor Oracle are attacked again." She gives a pained smile, asking for patience.

"I know any number of people would want access to your brilliant mind, but do you have any personal ideas or suspicions at all as to who might have led the attack? Even just a 'gut feeling' would be helpful."

Dottie gauges his response, looking for any tick in body language that suggests he might know it it is, even if he says otherwise. The first thing she wants to rule out if he himself organized his own kidnapping, and the second thing is, presuming he didn't, learning of disgruntled former colleagues or jealous relatives or the like.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27

male Human Eccentric Millionaire

Xavier watches the other monitors listening in but trying to make sure the good doctor doesn't freak out with the company's' owner in the same room with him.

"No, as I told the police, I don't think I have any enemies. No gambling debts. One of the other engineers suggested it was likely corporate espionage, attempting to drive down stock priceson the day of the big release or to keep me from what I am doing now, debugging issues that have come up since the launch."

He gestures to the monitors, "As you can see, the metrics on the roll-out are good. Response time is better than projections, and the system is already learning to anticipate users needs based on the patterns of behavior it detects."

male Human Eccentric Millionaire

"Dr.Hanes, I think she is asking on my behalf. However, I am more concerned about the system infiltration, As I trust you don't have any noticeable enemies. We launched a highly sophisticated program, that is in a lot of products and can be downloaded on Stark, Rand and Oscorp tech. Such a broad reach makes our Archimedes here a prime target, especially with that military software contract coming up. So if you could do a deep code scrub and proof that would help us out here expentionally. In fact, I assure you that we will take precautions to make sure your work isn't infringed any further once this is done, Can you do that for us Dr.Hanes"Xavier said pulling up the lines of code trying to see if he could see any real issues. Unfortunately, it was so fast he was only reading bis here and there. Like movie credits being sped up to see those hidden gems of a post-credit seen on your blu-ray.

"Of course I can. How soon do you need it done?"

The doctor seems confused at the need for such intrusive debugging in a system that appears to be working well, but he isn't willing to contradict his boss.

male Human Eccentric Millionaire

"I want it asap. A threat like this is potentially product ruining. Let alone a PR nightmare. I can probably recover if it is true, but if we can find it now contain it and trace it, my crack security team and the local authorites can wrap it up nicely without much of a fuss. Plus we can fix a hole in our products fence." he says with a smile, telling of the potential danger but also that was confident in his company and its people.

"Of course, sir. I'll get on it right away." He moves across the lab to a terminal and begins to type.

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

When he says "anticipate needs," wheels start turning. Dottie gets a crazy idea, and is about to write it off as not understanding how newfangled tech works, but asks a question anyway...

"Forgive a question from an uninformed layperson... but... this is a security program, is it not? To protect data? So, why would it need to anticipate the needs of the user, rather than say, that of an attacker? How does it anticipate the needs of the user? Can it monitor every program the user uses? Can it access or alter the user's other... uh..." she fishes for the word, "Apps? Like, if it anticipated someone using their camera was a security risk, could it highjack the camera? Could it prevent or..." she looks at Nite Owl, "Make phone calls?"

"No, it's more than security. It is phones, tablets, operating system, all tied together into a single system and the analytics that drive its ability to adapt. It can move apps into an order more useful to the user. It has the ability to make emergency calls, but we haven't enabled any of that."

male Human Eccentric Millionaire

"Theoretically it could" Xavier says as he taps his chin in thought remembering the specs that came across his desk. He wasn't completely unschooled in his companies tech, but sometimes the ideas did go over his head.

"At least like the good Doctor said, its a system meant to be smart and anticipate your needs"

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

"And in the very highly unlikely case you needed to disable it, how would you? Without it 'anticipating' that?"

After that answer, whatever it may be, Dottie nods to Xavier and the others that she's done, though of course will wait until anyone else is finished.

"Disable the whole system? Just a matter of giving it the kill code. And if that didn't work you could shut down the servers, which are here in the building, and the backups, which are off site, of course, for safety. But that would be a major black eye to the company.

Ok, let's fast forward to a safe talking spot and figure out what we want to do next.

Init +7 | Toughness +6/+4*/+3 (4 impervious, fades)| Dodge +10; Parry +10; Uncanny Dodge | Fort +7; Will +5 | Hero Pts: 0|

Are we going to the abandoned Worth street Station or somewhere else?
