DM Luke |

The icons on the map obscure the passage details. Bear in mind that there's vertical relief to this passage. Isegrim's the only one who can see the enemy properly from where he is. Kwava and Brenin can see one of the monsters by crouching.
Going from highest elevation to lowest elevation, here's how the passage breaks out.
Rees,Lia
10 foot drop
Brenin, Kwava, Trystan
7 foot drop
Isegrim
5 foot drop
Cavern floor
As you move to a place where your character can see at least one of the monsters, you're free to make knowledge (nature, religion, planes) rolls to identify the monsters.
Lia's following with her initiative.

DM Luke |

You can find a illustrations of the enemies in the room here.
Initiative order is:
Trystan 19
Rees 17
Brenin 17
Kwava 17
Dark Elf 7
Lia 7
Isegrim 5
Monsters 3
The dark elf's allies stand about 4 feet tall but are heavily muscled. They wear no armor and have no weapons but their claws (despite the picture).

DM Luke |

I keep meaning to ask you how this medieval shower-thing is supposed to function. I have this picture of flying imps with watering cans of hot water...

Trystan Glenfauran |

"You know, if you got a little sun once in a while my dear, you might attract better suitors."
Trystan drops the glowing rock in his hand to the slimy cavern floor and raises his loaded crossbow before him. He murmurs an incantation and commands the closest beast to flee for it's life.
Knowledge (Religion) to identify creatures 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

DM Luke |

Oooh! DM dice cold as ice. I have a running streak of 3, 3, 1, 3 & 4 in five rolls of the d20. Someone funked my die. :/
The creature is a dretch. A demonic manifestation of a slothful soul. Someone's been summoning things from the lower planes.
Trystan, I think mechanically your turn is good as long as you move to somewhere you can see the creature you're commanding. (11,11) works and is within your move range. Assuming you're willing to move there...
One of the demons (7,13) is shocked into obedience. It stops in its tracks then flees to the back of the chamber on its turn.
Rees...

Rees |

I nudge Lia and mutter Watch your heads. I think to myself, "fires been working well for me and so I decide launching a fireball directly at the druid bit^^s head seems like a good idea". my d4 corner roll is a 4 Trystan, is it getting hot in here or is it just me? I take a peek at Lia to see if she thinks I'm crazy or not.

DM Luke |

I got Melissa's rolls as caster level check 18 + 3 = 21 (spell resistance). 5d6 damage is 6,6,4,4,4 = 24.
Special edition of the battlemap today on account of the firestarter. The triangle shows the range of visibility for Rees. I optimistically selected the square (7,9) as the deepest point in the cave that you could target. I marked corner 4 with a dot. The red shade is twenty foot radius, which couldn't have worked out better for you.
Reflex saves - the drow rolls a 5. The demon rolls a frickin' 1.
The blast blossoms with a roar, a crimson bloom of fiery death that singes Trystan's eyelashes. Unbelievably both the enemies enveloped in the momentary blast are still standing as the inferno reduces to smouldering bits here and there. The demon looks burned - and demons are damned hard to burn. The dark elf grits her teeth and stands her ground through the explosion.
The soft items in the niche are aflame but the chest appears sound if scorched.
Brenin is up.

Brenin Grazier |

"That's what I'm talking about! Get 'em Rees."
Brenin drops to the ground beside Isegrim at 10,12 and fires an arrow at his favorite target. Attack is 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11. Damage is 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6.
"That's just to let you know I'm still here."
Brenin curses under his breath and reaches for another arrow.

DM Luke |

That shot goes whistling past your target and shatters against the far wall.
Kwava bounces down next to Brenin and fires a silver tipped arrow at the wounded demon, but that shot also goes astray.
The drow cooly fires her little crossbow, whips another bolt into the breach, draws and fires again. The first bolt is aimed at Brenin and is wickedly placed. 10 points of damage. Make another fort save please.
The second bolt takes Kwava in the torso and lights him on fire! He screams in surprise and pats furiously at his burning self.
Lia's turn.

Lia Smythe |

What? My turn already? And it isn't even Christmas yet!
Lia jumps down to join the fray. She stomps to the front of the action and draws her weapon.
Okay, acrobatics roll: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23
Since I successfully make the jump, just like I would in real life, I move to (10,10). Note to all: a perfect "10" move, again, like me in real life.

DM Luke |

Nevermind Isegrim. I just realized you retrieved and took the barkskin potion this turn. You;re entitled to a 5' step, but you really have nowhere to go right now. It's my turn, then Trystan. I'll post after work.

DM Luke |

The closest demon flees as a result of Trystan's command spell. The second demon - the one bearing Rees's scorchmarks charges into combat. The fury of its assault focuses on Brenin. 23 hits. 3 points of damage. One of its gore-soaked claws gouges the beleaguered ranger. This monster charged, so it has -2 AC until next turn.
Trystan's turn.

Trystan Glenfauran |

Trystan curses Kwava for trying to obscure his shot. He sees a moment of opportunity and takes it, reloading after. He quickly glances back to check on Rees.
Attack, withdrawing demon 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18 Damage 1d8 ⇒ 3

DM Luke |

The shot hits the monster but fails to penetrate its hide.
Rees.

DM Luke |

If you aren't careful I'm going to roll your damage for you - and you don't want that (unless I'm rolling against Brenin).

DM Luke |

Pam witnessed Melissa's unspectacular 5d6 roll of 12.
Rees shakes the wand and another happy little ball of flame pops out of the end and shoots up the chimney passage above her, lighting the walls as it passes. As it shoots past the shelf she glimpses the big critter releasing its end of the first fibrous strand. The fireball blossoms above the bug and the blowback fire from the trapped elemental energy washes over Rees, singing her dress and leaving her devil-born skin smoking. Chunks of earth and rock are discharged from the roof of the cave. Rees make a reflex save to avoid an environmental hazard (falling rocks).
Brenin is delaying.
Kwava slides neatly past the burnt and raging demon. It swipes at the elf with its one good arm as he dodges by. He pivots on his heel and drives a bowshot into the monster's exposed flank from very close range.
The dretch screeches in agony as it swipes at the shaft of the arrow, but still does not go down.
"Damned things have tough hides," the elf calls back.
Tactically speaking, the dretch has used its attack of opportuninty against Kwava - thus I'm pausing before the drow's action to see if Brenin wants in here.

DM Luke |

The creature twists away from Brenin's shot and the arrow shatters on the back wall.
The dark elf moves over behind the still smoking chest using it for partial cover. She aims her little bow at Kwava and lets loose with another bolt. This one impacts on the elf's shoulder and explodes in a shower of acid - most of which spatters the stalagmite behind him NPC saved by crappy damage rolls. Kwava is close to unconsciousness.
It's Lia's turn. The modified initiative sequence is...
Trystan
Rees
Kwava
Brenin
Dark Elf
Lia
Isegrim
Dretches
Big cave bug

Lia Smythe |

I move to (8,13). He's already used his aoo, so I don't have to tumble, for you rules lawyers out there.
Lia moves by the nasty thing and gets behind him; one of her favorite positions. She tries some moves with her trusty rapier.
attack: 1d20 + 2 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 2 + 7 = 29
confirming critical: 1d20 + 2 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 2 + 7 = 29
Did anyone else feel the disturbance in the force? damage is :2d6 ⇒ (4, 5) = 9
sneak attack damage: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 6) = 10

Isegrim Valko |

Isegrim readies The Raven's Blade and his lips curl hungrily as he stalks the hellspawn creature closest to him (moving to 11,9 and attacking 12,9) . "As this day has grown on my patience has worn thin for these slothful crouchers in the darkened shadows of dreams. Let us make this place a bit more light with the sundering of their foul flesh."
Overhand Chop 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Damage 2d6 + 8 ⇒ (3, 2) + 8 = 13

DM Luke |

Nice one baby!
Lia drives the slim and gleaming blade into the monster's back. It wrenches free of the length of metal and slumps against the cavern wall, its life's energy spent.
Rees sidesteps a piece of the ceiling that tries to pay her a visit.
Isegrim, Lia just killed your target. The map's now been updated and it's still your move.

Isegrim Valko |

"Nicely done wicked Lia. Could it be that you are even more lovely when you are running through deadly monsters?" Isegrim turns and moves to intercept the Dark Pointy eared fiend that has drawn our chase into these murky underground realms.
Isegrim moves to 10,9 and readies for attack (damned slow armour)
"You seem to like picking on poor defenseless rangers you underworld b+*!~. Would you care to shed some light on these dark workings before we send you to a fiery place to rest for eternity? Who are you and why were you in the woods? What have ye to do with the darkness that haunts the sky?"

DM Luke |

The remaining demon shakes off Trystan's command.
The drow screams at the demon and points at Isegrim.
It looks dumbly at the dark elf and charges back into the fray. Isegrim, take that attack. It charges headlong into Isegrim and releases the most wretched abyssal fart your worlds have ever known. Everyone in the colored area gets to make a fortitude save DC 13 versus nausea.
The monster bug behind the group spits a second long string of stuff and this time strikes Rees on the shoulder. There's no pain but the stuff is stuck very firmly to Rees's dress. In fact it immediately begins pulling her to the base of the wall below its perch.
Trystan's up once Isegrim attacks.

DM Luke |

Brenin, by the same token as you could not see the back of the chamber from up above (the roof is steep), you can see the bug when standing at the bottom of the 'steps'. I figured the distance at 62' which is right about the limits of your darkvision, but I'll allow the attck on your turn.

Isegrim Valko |

"Ayyyy the stench! You foul offspring of the corpses of horses, no doubt your dead bodies smell more lovely than this wretched offal you offer. You can tell alot about a dark elf by the company she keeps....clearly your judgement stinks!"
Fortitude 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
I take it that this attack being offered is an attack of opportunity? Do I still get to make a regular attack during the next round? Or how does that work out? Forgive my ignorance. Thanks!

DM Luke |

No problem Isegrim. The attack is your readied action to strike this monster as it comes up to you. It's not an Aoo because those only happen when an enemy leaves a square you threaten. This guy just charged into one and floated a biscuit.
Strictly speaking, your init moves to just before the dretches (it was already there), and you interrupt their current action to resolve yours. I went ahead and acted for the dretch to move us along, since with his DR it's unlikely you will kill him in one shot.
So Isegrim may attack and Trystan can go ahead and act after he saves vs infernal flutterblast.

Brenin Grazier |

Trystan Glenfauran |

Save 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
When Trystan senses the cloud of vapor reach out for him he turns to hide his face from it's hideous stench. He catches glimpse of his woman in mortal struggle with a stalk eyed creature. He takes one big stride (to 12/12), plants his feet, fires and reloads.
Crossbow 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Damage 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

DM Luke |

All of you resisted demon stankonia round one. If you don't move out of the cloud, you have to resist again on the dretch's turn.
The demon is shorter than Isegrim accounted for and the mighty blow misses its mark.
Trystan hurries his shot after vaulting the shelf. The bolt is lost in the shadows.
Rees.

Rees |

Eww, this is really gross. Without really thinking through the consequences Reese fires another shot at the giant bug. When debris starts falling around her she thinks oops, maybe a piece of burning cave part will hit the demon drow. okay Luke, I think I have all the rolls. Corner #2, 5d6=23, fire res 20, debris res 23.

DM Luke |

This little ball explodes with more angry red energy. The fire alone scorches well past the witch's natural tolerance. Rees takes 7 points of fire damage. The concussion of the blast brings down a rain of stones and dirt that Rees manages to avoid by sheltering against the wall. The well-cooked bug is buried in the roof collapse. The nine squares touched by the rubble I dropped on the map are now difficult terrain.
Kwava continues deeper into the cave to escape the demon fug. He pivots and lets a shot fly that catches the drow by surprise. 8 hp.
Brenin's up.
