Works that way for all spells where the damage dice scale with the level of the caster. Fireballs and whatnot. Eventually Flamestrike will work this way for you.

DM Luke |

The horrific face registers a brief note of concern just seconds before you smash it out of existence.
Combat is over. Everyone receives 300 xp. I believe Eberk advanced to level 3 now.
This room reeks of death, and the reason is apparent as Yod takes a moment to gaze down into one of the pits at his feet. At the bottom of a ten foot drop is a badly decomposed body. As you walk around the room, you notice that each pit has at least one body, and that some of them are naught but bones.
There is a second exit to this room along the south wall.

DM Luke |

You'll have to climb down and wade through the ichor to inspect the corpses for identifying features. They're really in bad shape.
Yod, the corridor runs straight to a closed door. There's also a branch to the left about 25' down the hall.

DM Luke |

Nope again. I think she already raised herself to 3rd. She asked me some questions about it at some point. Anyway, if you can't find it just leave it for her when she gets back. I'll adjust.
Cha and Sari, Yod pads down the hall to the south. I'll give you guys a chance to act here.

DM Luke |

Yod, the branch to the left ends in a stairway that spirals down to ruin. The entire passage has collapsed after only a couple of steps.

DM Luke |

Sorry dude. We went for the weekend to St Augustine for our anniversary. I'll post shortly...

DM Luke |

The passage is entirely collapsed. Knowledge(dungeoneering) DC 20 check to determine how much it would take to excavate such ruin. You have to have at least one rank in the skill to make this roll (ie. you have to be trained). If Eberk qualifies to make the roll, I grant a +2 dwarven stonecunning bonus to his roll.
The door at the end of the hall opens easily to reveal possibly the strangest room any of you have ever seen. The room is a perfect sphere of about 15' diameter composed of red metallic plates. The plates are perfectly polished and reflect the light of Sari's lamp in hypnotic patterns.
In the center of the room several objects float in thin air. There is a wine bottle, an old moldy book, an unmoving black bird, a piece of parchment, and a twisted metal rod about the size of a wand with a curious forked end.
As the group stands in the doorway, a sudden crackle of black light ripples across the plates, coalescing just for an instant in runes before vanishing back into the wall.
DC 8 fortitude save to avoid wetting yourself.
Just kidding. sort of.

Cha tuk |

Spherical...as in round ceiling, walls and floor. If we walk in, we walk down?
I vote let's go get a racing cart and a fast horse and see if we can do a 360 in this baby.
Seriously, however...what does the door look like? If we stepped into the room and closed the door, would it be hard to spot? I'm not suggesting this move btw, just asking.

DM Luke |

Yes, to step in you would step down into the 'bowl' of the room's floor. The backside of the door is plated with the same metal, though the fact that it's flat should make it stand out.
As Cha examines the door, another streak of the black light races around the room, then disappears in a flash.

DM Luke |

So can I throw a rock up into the floating stuff and see what happens?
Anybody think that is a bad idea?
There's probably some crumbled masonry or a Koruvus turd or something that you can lay hands on. Coins work too, plus they're lucky!

Sari |

Leave it to the rogue to throw a rock at it.
Is there any kind of check I can do to see if I know WTF is going on in here? I have a +7 knowledge arcana and a +5 spellcraft skill. Also, at what level are the things levitating? Can we touch them? Not that I really want too....
"Uh, guys, what is going on in here? Did you see that?"

DM Luke |

Sari, a spellcraft check (DC 20 + level of spell) could identify a spell that's already in effect.
Yod tosses a small rock into the room. Its momentum takes it into the room, but not towards the floor. In the vertical plane the stone stays around the same level as the other objects, which is just about chest high. The objects are too far into the room to reach from the doorway though.

Sari |

Good thing you got rocks for Halloween. They don't melt in the oven.
My spellcraft roll is a 12 + 5 for a 17. What's that get me?
Sari's eyes are tricking her. Did it look like the rock stayed level and not fall down to the floor? She thinks to herself, "I REALLY need to get more sleep."

DM Luke |

Sari, your comment is a good characterization of the result of your roll.
[crush]"And you were like, whoah!"[/crush]

DM Luke |

As with the rock, the rope end floats in the room among the other objects. There's not really any way to use the rope to hook the objects and pull them to you. If you want to examine the objects, you might have to try to get them first hand.
In any event, the rope is not in any way "stuck" in the room. It very easily comes back to you as you pull the end in your hand.

DM Luke |

Cha, as you step down into the room, you are lifted up off your feet and float weightlessly in the air. It only takes a few moments to figure out that you can "will" yourself around the small room. The book floats by your face, its pages open to show stained pages covered in faded writing that you do not understand.

Cha tuk |

Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee...
I test out my new found ability by circumnavigating the room and looking for anything more unusual than this. Then I move to grasp an object. I'll start with the wine bottle. If nothing happens when I collect them, I'll take them back to my compatriots one at a time until we have them all.

DM Luke |

As you float closer to the objects you notice that the bird floats in a small cloud of little white maggots. The wine bottle floats easily to hand, as do any other items you wish to collect. Only the dead bird really seems sinister upon outward inspection. You take everything and return to the group?

DM Luke |

The bird is a common crow. Certainly native to this and many other regions. It cannot have been dead for too long, unless the room has some preservative feature as well. It looks like its breast was defeathered and picked apart.
The wine bottle is corked and half consumed. The book is in tatters. The parchment is covered with diagrams and runes in some odd language that seems to share some roots with draconic. Either Sari can cast read magic, or roll a spellcraft check DC 20 + level of spell - 10 (unknown language) to figure it out. You also have the wand.
As you make your way back to your companions, the room is again illuminated by the crackling black lightning. It blinds you momentarily and leaves blue spots in your vision, but does not otherwise harm you. You make it back to the threshold and gravity again takes hold of your frame.

Cha tuk |

"By the way, the black lightning and floating is making me very uneasy. If we're going to examine this room any closer let's do it, or let's get out of here."
DM, is it possible to get a full map of where we've been? I was keeping track of the jpegs you were sending out, but now they disappear when you post a new one. The only door I can recall we haven't been in is the one up the stairs. Then we've got the other passage to check.

DM Luke |

I'm mailing the overall to you. I'm leery of spoilering other people's games.

Cha tuk |

Got it. Looks great. Others as in other people playing the same adventure and reading our thread...that would take all the fun out of it.
"Let's check out the cell room. Maybe there's something we missed by not going down the stairs. Then let's get back to the last door we missed."

DM Luke |

Got it. Looks great. Others as in other people playing the same adventure and reading our thread...that would take all the fun out of it.
I suppose. Though others playing the same adventure should probably avoid ours or any other threads on ROTRL. I guess it's just the idea of posting the whole DM's map for the catacombs online. I'm sure it's already out there somewhere, but the DM in me just cringes at the thought. I'm keeping the shots I post as tight as possible and constantly changing them. Plus I'm sure that Paizo has not posted this material online themselves, and I want to steer as clear as possible from their IPR. I'm just interested in running their kick-ass adventures.

DM Luke |

Naw. It was really 6:54. The timezone control is off somehow on my posts. Probably something I didn't set correctly when I created this user.
So Melissa is on a business trip so we can't expect anything from Eberk, but what about it Yod? Sari? Is the party going back to the cell block? Or the last unopened door?
