It was a pretty nerve wracking recruitment. Guess I'll have to go in and get my character ready for the campaign. Looking forward to the adventure and my sympathies to those not selected.

I agree. It sounds like he knew who he wanted which I'd fine but at least be open and up front about it so it does not appear like shenanigans.

Heavens, however did I not receive word of this exciting and ambitious endeavor? Though I am sadly unable to accompany the five of you, I will certainly observe your progress with great interest.

There's no rule against lurking. You could always ask the GM about appearing as an NPC at some point.
