Fluff:

Under scrutiny of other law enforcement members, Buck Blackhart seems to be one of the best detectives on the force. Avidly worshipping Abadar, the god of law and judgment, he deeply cares about justice, and is beyond loyal to the Crown of Taldor. Buck delights most in catching the less than useful nobles breaking the law. After all, purging the empire of traitors is definitely an implicit part being a guardsman, even more so when you are division chief. While Buck won’t go out of his way to entrap members of the aristocracy, he has absolutely no qualms with putting them in manacles and dragging them to jail in public if the need arises. Publicly Dashing a corrupt senator’s reputation, or that of a Comte or Duke who’s coffers lay dormant in a time of need for the empire brings high esteem to Buck’s division, and to a lesser extent, the Crown.

Buck’s time as Detective Chief Inspector, however, is coming to a close. As of the last year, The Blackhart family is no longer of the lower class. Raised in status and granted wealth, Buck intends to make a name for his newly noble family by providing the Taldorian Empire a much needed service. He intends guide hi family into the annuls of history by weeding out those other nobles who are less than loyal to the empire. His hope is to return Taldor to its once former glory.

Detective Blackhart may seem like a hardass when he's on the job, but he's actually a fairly laid back person, frequently joking with his subordinates. Especially about some of the more ridiculous laws of the city. His favorite joke to play is when he gets a batch of new recruits, he'll stand them in a line and if any of them have even a hint of stubble, he glares intimidatingly at the man, pulls a dulled shaving razor then yells "SHAVE YOUR BEARD BEFORE I THROW YOU IN THE LOCKER FOR LIFE!" this typically leads to recruits attempting to shave with a dull razor and no mirror in front of their new squadmates.

...Some of his other pranks don't go over so well...

Ten minute Background:

step 1: background
1) He’s the head of the Crownsgate Guard in the city of Oppara
2) He’s stern and takes his job serious when he’s on duty. When he’s off duty he makes bad “dad” jokes
3) [i]He frequently takes long trips outside of the city to catch criminals of Oppara, especially those that like to frequently return the his city

4) He truly despises nobles who are only interested in gain for their own houses. To that end he enjoys digging up dirt on nobles.
5) Before he was recruited for the city guard, he was learning gunsmithing from his father. After many years with the guard, he began setting the standards for his particular guardhouse to include a level of detective work.
Step 2: Goals
1) [i]He wants to see his newly pronounced noble family rise through the hierarchy of nobility to better serve the Taldan Empire

2) He wants to rid the empire of those families that would leverage their wealth and influence against the interests of the empire and its people.
Step 3: Secrets
1) When he was 19, he fell in love with a Keleshite woman while chasing a fugitive, and she gave birth to his first child.
2) The Keleshite he fathered a child with is a Qadiran noble, and her child is about to reach the age of adulthood
Step 4: Relations
1) Tetra Damasus (Maiden name Tetra Blackhart). Tetra is Robert’s older sister who met and married a Caldaru man from the Fever Sea. Her son, Opilio, has come to Taldor to join his Uncle in creating the Blackhart noble house
2) Harbormaster Hallador and Detective Blackhart get along tentatively. Their motives are similar enough that when they work together it goes really well. Obviously Harbormaster Hallador doesn’t always tell Detective Blackhart the truth of things, but they both care about the safety of the citizens.
3) The Masked Marquis is the closest thing to a true Nemesis that Detective Blackhart has. As the only person in the city to have actually caught the Marquis, Blackhart realized that he couldn’t hold the person under the mask accountable to all the crimes that The Marquis had been accused of when a second Masked Marquis showed up at the scene and foiled the arrest.
Step 5: Mannerisms
1) [i]Robert remembers the rhythmic clanging of his father’s hammer pounding out horseshoes and gun barrels every morning throughout his childhood. Robert learned to fire a gun before he learned to read properly.

2) Blackhart knows that people think he’s got a bad case of “Dad jokes,” but it makes him more personable considering that most of the people he’s in charge of already consider him a father figure.
3) When Blackhart is on the job he is deadly serious
4) [i]Robert likes to think back to the days when his older sister would cook and clean for his father and him after their mother passed away.

The Coat of Bayan:

Eons ago, when magic was much more powerful, it wasn’t uncommon to permanently banish the soul of a particularly heinous criminal into an item, Bayan was one of these men. Bayan was a great priest of the elder-god, Rovagug, and strode upon a pale horse through the lands slaughtering thousands of people in honor of the great devourer. When finally he rode his steed to the heart of Azlant, he was captured and sentenced. His punishment was to be bound to a coat of armor and forced to watch all of eternity to pass him by.

After many years had passed in his life as a coat, Bayan finally found himself to be a repentant… Man? Finding the true folly in his old ways, Bayan vowed to redeem his old life by seeking out and defeating those who behave as he once did. Having spent so long in reflection, Bayan developed an instinct to sense those who used to be like him and force the truth from them.

Not letting go of his past self completely, Bayan often finds himself making dark jokes about his owner’s mortality. Most people would find this unsettling, his most recent owner, Detective Blackhart, however finds it incredibly entertaining when Bayan whispers jokes in his ear about the morbid crime scene situations. While his comments may be dark, they are not sickly, and Bayan now despises when people take pleasure in mortal violence.
