Seeing Kereek falter, Agnar casts a spell and move to him, laying a hand upon his shoulder. Slow poison on Kereek.

Round 2

If any spiders continue to swarm around Kereek, Prazil and Spike try to fight them off.

Round 2:

Kereek: 19
Prazil: 17
Agnar: 16
Orin: 5
Treshiell: 4
Jon: 2
Spiders: 21

The injury throws off Kereek's aim, and he's unable to fully catch the spider in his fiery blast, though he does catch it in the edge, hurting it even worse. Before it can do anything else, though, Treshiell's swarm of smaller spiders seems to swallow it, and it quickly collapses under the weight of their attacks.

Prazil and Spike attack the spider attacking Fang, dispatching the creature with hammer and horn. The massive canine returns to standing guard over the red-scaled kobold changing his action due to lack of target as Agnar approaches and channels healing magic to delay the spider venom coursing through his veins.

Orin approaches a pair of the emerging spiders, though his target just ducks under his blade as it closes in on him.

To the north, Jon and Shi'Ra finish off one of the spiders as another emerges from the flaming ruins. Four of the "smaller" spiders continue to attack Jon, Orin and Spike, though none is able to penetrate your armor. The largest spider skitters forward with astonishing speed, closing on Orin in a flash, though the half-elf is able to leap back and avoid her mandibles.

Crap; I missed that the big spider has reach -- a fair amount of it actually. I'll ignore it this round -- it rushed forward to get away from the fire, but anyone trying to close in on it in the next rounds may take AoOs. Also, I began this post at home and then finished at work, so some of the rolls may have changed, so that might not be the most accurate mechanics this round.

Round 3:

Kereek: 19
Prazil: 17
Agnar: 16
Orin: 5
Treshiell: 4
Jon: 2
Spiders: 21

Kereek's blast hits the big spider, which lets out an almost human scream of pain, a sounds that changes to horrific chittering as Prazil and Spike charge at it.

Fang also rushes forward, snapping at one of the spiders, as Agnar begins healing Kereek.

Orin's swing misses as the massive spider skitters away from its attackers -- including the swarm of small spiders, which begins disintegrating in the heat of the fire, suddenly spitting webs at them.

Across the clearing, Jon and Shi'Ra continue to fight off several of the small spiders, Jon's blade and the cat's claws and fangs taking a toll on their attackers, though they remain hard-pressed.

Despite the relentless onslaught from the spiders, your armor and hides are able to keep their attacks from doing any harm. The queen retreats a bit, moving farther from the fire and the harrying assaults, closing on Treshiell.

Once the fire is out, Orin will use his sword and clear away the rest of the webbing and underbrush. Once the ruin is cleared he will walk around the perimeter trying to ascertain what this building may once have been.

Prazil struggles trying to free Spike from the queen's sticky webbing, several times tumbling head-over-heels suddenly as a clumb of webbing tears free in his hands. After a lot of frustrated grunts and gasps, the little kobold and triceratops are finally able to remove the majority of the webbing. "Gah! Prazil am no like this. You am not allowed to am get stuck like this again, Spike! It am no fun!"

"Am everyone ok? Am spider-bites make anyone sick?"

Treshiell pockets some of the spiderweb before turning her attention back to the spider queen, pondering over its origin and nature.

Agnar will gather the group in and inspect injuries, taking out his healing kit and attending anyone that seems to still be suffering from the poison (or whomever is suffering the worst, if more than one.)

Orin, you're not sure what the building used to be -- likely some old temple or fort. The fire has cleared out most of the vegetation around the ruins, and you can see carvings that seem to depict a nymph on the soot-stained walls.

You also find scattered around the area 60 gp, 3 pp, a beautiful gauntlet, a still-full potion bottle and three 6-inch-long adamantine nails in the remains of a now-ruined leather pouch.

Treshiell, you detect no magic coming from the spider, which you think was an ogre spider, so named in part for its size but also the uncanny resemblance of its face to an ogre.

The potion and nails radiate magic.

Treshiell dismisses the spider queen and gratefully accepts the items. She sits down in the shadow of giant creature and draws two circles in the ground, one for the potion and one for the nail. ”Your ward is gone”, Treshiell tells Orin absently then opens her eyes to study the magical energies around the two items.

Jon looks at it and determines it appears to simply be a masterwork gauntlet, Orin.

Feel free to continue any actions you might want to take at the spider's den, but I figured I'd move things along.

The journey back to Thronehold is happily uneventful as you continue to recover from your recent battles. Once there, you settle down to some of the mundane tasks of running the kingdom. Mid-week, Jon calls you together, concerned.

"My friends, much as I've enjoyed traveling with you, I think these last few days have shown me what can happen when I'm not here. Running a kingdom sadly requires more of my attention, and I think I shall have to retire and leave it to the five of you to explore."

Agnar smiles and gives a nod. "As m'lord wishes," he says.

Do we have anyone in the party with ranks in Appraise? If not, I'm sure we can find a local merchant to look that gauntlet over for us. We run the darned country, after all.

As you continue to attend to the tasks that had built up in your absence, Rupert mentions during a council meeting that you've received a note from Chief Sootscale, inviting you to attend dinner in his caverns.

"I have an important meeting with an ambassador from Numeria, so I thought perhaps Kereek and Prazil could go in my stead?" he says.

Everyone but the kobolds:

"And maybe a few people should go to keep an eye on 'em?" he suggests to you after the council meeting.

Kereek draws himself up to his full height, preening mightily. "Kereek is honored to be ambassadorial to Sootscales! Now Kereek can show mighty Chief how mighty Kereek is!" He cackles evilly.

Prazil looks side to side a bit nervously at Rupert's request but his expression shifts to one of total worry when Kereek makes his declaration. He taps his clutch-mate on the shoulder timidly then loudly whispers, "Ummm, Kereek? Prazil am not thinking setting Chief on fire am what Rupert am asking us to do."

"Kereek no need to set Chief Big Pants on fire. Kereek merely show Chief Big Pants how mighty Kereek is! Kereek wear special fancy fancy clotheses and elf-cloak! Kereek is shiny shiny Big Hero. Chief Big Pants will be impressed!" Kereek looks hurt at the idea that he would set the Chief on fire. Clearly that's what minions are for.

Prazil looks askance at Kereek, wanting to believe him but obviously not yet convinced. He ticks off on his fingers one by one as he continues, "Ummm, Ok? Prazil am just remembering that time you burned Chief's hat. And that time you burned Chief's chair. And that time you burned Chief's favorite blanket. He am not for being happy when that am happen. Whoa." He shakes his head ruefully at the memory.

Kereek looks at Prazil incredulously, clearly unable to understand his continued obsession with the past. "Duh, Egghead. Chief not have anything else for Kereek to burn, so Kereek can't set Chief stuff on fire. Kereek think this through." He smiles and crosses his arms, looking very impressed with his own logical capabilities.
