  • Hazreem senses the futility in his slam attacks and changes tactics. He retrieves a wand and casts Bull’s Strength on Bahir. (+4 Strength, 3min).
  • Bahir, moves up to Memrach and unleashes a series of vicious strikes. Three attacks sink deep, and though Memrach seems to be unaffected by the frost, he certainly is greatly wounded by the paladin (AC44 hits, 36 dmg; AC48 hits, 22 dmg; AC38 hits, 20 dmg; AC31, miss; AC30, miss, does not confirm crit; total 78 dmg). As Bahir moves up to attack, Memrach swings his mighty falchion at the paladin as he advances and lands a solid blow. (AoO AC37, hits for 18; 10 absorbed by stoneskin; 8 total taken).
  • Efreat quickly flies out of the ice storm and casts magic missile on Memrach, but he is not able to penetrate the Div’s powerful spell defenses (CLC 21 vs SR - fails)
  • Iavesk casts invisibility on himself and peeks around the corner. ”Great gods, a Sepid!”

  • Pae, seizing his chance to mix it up with the div, attempts to tumble onto the overturned lounger and drive his rapier into Memrach. He was not quite nimble enough, however, and the div is able to get in a attack (Acrobatics 30 vs Memrach CMD - fail; AoO AC hits for 21 damage). Reeling from the slash he just received, Pae’s attack cannot penetrate the div’s defense (AC 30 - miss)
  • Mah’ysa, takes the chance in dropping her sanctuary and casts spear of purity at the div. A golden spear of light shoots forth from her holy symbol and easily strikes the creature. However, Memrach is able to shake off its effects. (AC27 range touch, hits; CLC 17 vs SR - fail).

Memrach continues to badger Mah’ysa, so all can hear this time, ”Harrr, Sarenrae is not with you this time, my priestess. You notice that the div's debris storm ability, while taking up the entire room, does not extend all the way to the ceiling. Hazreem, in fact, is only half in it. You also notice that it doesn't extend to the ground all the way; it seems that the div has about a 10ft. area in height for this ability.

GM Justaworm, I am confused here. Did Hazreem take any damage here from the Debris Storm ability? The Current status does not reflect the damage he has taken.

Hazreem grunts in pain from the debris scouring his body. Knowing Bahir was essentially their only chance of defeating Memrach, he elects to assist the paladin by distracting Memrach.

Fight Defensively (-4 to hit, +2 to AC.)
Aid Another: 1d20 + 14 + 1 + 1 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 14 + 1 + 1 + 2 - 4 = 21 success. Bahir gets a +2 to his attacks against Memrach.

Justaworm: I don't think he should have got an AOO for me just 5' stepping up to him last round. I believe Pae's evasion ability saves him from taking any damage at all from the area effect ability of the creature.

    I have to say, if anything needs some quick rules or unchaining, it is Polymorph. I have 5 different web pages open trying to figure out Pae's stats (because silly me hasn't just put him in Herolab yet) and my 8 year is like, "what are you doing?" ... sigh ... just trying to figure out the stats on a squirrel rogue ...

    The paladin finds an opening in the creatures defenses, just as he is gloating over his transformation of Pae into a squirrel, and says as he sinks his blade into its side, "I don't think you will find this as amusing."

    • Haz’reem flies over and around Memrach, outflanking him so that Bahir can hit easier. He also tries to harry Memrach to distract him but Memrach pays him no mind this time. (Aid - natural 1, fail).
    • Efreat, changes spell tactics to avoid Memrach’s spell resistance and casts acid arrow infused with elemental cold. A magical arrow of frost darts from his hand and easily hits Memrach, however he seems unfazed by the cold damage. (6 cold damage resisted).
    • Bahir, sensing this battle may be getting away from them, digs deep down into his reserve of righteous anger. He lands four decisive blows against the creature, hoping he doesn’t have to find out what it is like to become a squirrel next.(4 hits, no crit confirmation; 94 damage). Bahir then touches his hand to his chest and heals himself (36 damage healed).

    Memrach, wounds oozing with vile black blood, looks to be near death, but he still remains standing for now.

    Actually is it possible for Hazreem to pick up Pae and move him into his square...or perhaps Pae could climb onto Hazreem and sink the killing blow. Hazreem is right next to him, so it certainly could work. Plus Hazreem has been fairly ineffectual in this fight so this is a cool way to contribute here :)

    I believe that even tiny and diminutive critters can 5' step. They just don't threaten squares around them like larger critters do.

    So it looks like a possibly common houserule to nix the 5ft step for tiny and diminutive, while increasing for the two largest sizes to 10 ft. While it makes sense, given what a 5ft step represents, I don't think it is worth the trouble.

    I don't think it will be the killing blow (DR), but we'll see when I get a chance. To account for you all having near-max Hp, I've given the major encounters close to the same benefit to keep things more challenging. It would definitely be one of the coolest killing blow 'ninjas' though!

    Unfortunately for Pae, there are two rules in play that may change your mind on his action...

    PRD Flanking:
    Rule 1 = He cannot flank at his size. This little nugget is found under the rules for flanking. Since he cannot be a part of a flank, he cannot not also get sneak attack damage from flanking.

    Rule 2 = He will take an AoO for moving into Memrach's space if he wants to aid or attack. He has no reach, nor reach weapon, so he has to occupy the same space to attack.

    There is some debate over whether the 5' foot step rule (which says 5' foot steps never provoke) supercedes the AOO from moving into a square. Also, wouldn't he be threatening once he is actually in the creatures square. No matter, I thought it was a bit silly in the first place. Pae goes and hides.

    Separately, in think I'll house rule this in my games now that you have brought some clarity to it. I have seen too many pixie rougues who would be utterly ineffective if it were impossible for them to flank and it would be even worse if their opponent could just 5' foot step themselves forcing them to re-engage and trigger another AOO each round. Not trying to change your mind here at all, just my 2 cents. Pae still goes and hides :)

    Ahh shoot, I forgot to go back to the 5ft step rule for this one. I don't mind figuring this out now in case it comes up again...

    So I agree that:
    (1) nothing in the 5ft step rules precludes a Diminutive, Fine, or Tiny character from taking a 5ft step, (which is weird, but hey ...)
    (2) nothing in the 5ft step rules says that you cannot take a 5ft step into another characters space (assuming other situations like sizing would allow for it), and
    (3) it specifically says no AoO.

    Q.E.D Diminuitive squirrel Pae could take a 5ft step into Memrach space with no AoO, but he could not take a move action into Memrach space without taking an AoO. Furthermore, diminuitive Pae cannot flank regardless of whether his is nipping Memrach's toes or biting his nose, unless he has a reach weapon that lets him threaten to 5ft.

    Memrach, desperate for a way to counter the paladin’s assault, defensively casts another spell. Eight extra images of the div appear and begin to swirl about him, making it difficult to determine which is its true form. He then takes a 5 ft. step to the south. (You’ve seen mirror image enough to automatically know the spell; 8 total images; Memrach will be the '1' on rolls for images.
