Game Master Dread

This is an 'adventure path' created by combining the adventures Sunless Citadel, Forge of Fury, Speaker in Dreams, Wererats of Relfrin (now called Wererats of Sauerton), The Standing Stone and Dragon Mountain. Care to take the journey?

This will be an Adventure Path combining Sunless Citadel-Forge of Fury-Speaker In Dreams-Wererats of Relfrin-The Standing Stone- and culminating in the much acclaimed 2nd ed Dragon Mountain, which has been reworked for Pathfinder.

The Adventure will begin in the Farming Hamlet of Oakhurst; in Northern Andoran, where it sits between the Five Kings Mountains and The Verduran Forest.

I do not want potential players to spend a lot of energy creating characters if they aren't chosen. So please read character selection and creation below.

what I want from my players:

1. To endeavor to post once a day.

2. To work together as a group for an enjoyable game.

5. Interesting and enjoyable character development and interaction

my gaming contract with the players:

On the early morning of the 12th of Gozran a small earthquake rocked the community of Oakhurst and the neighboring farms sent word that strange noises were coming from the gorge to the west that held a long sunken Dwarven Citadel. The Hero's of Oakhurst- The Son and Daughter of the towns Mayor; Kerowyn Hucrele, owner of the General Store and wealthy merchant in her own right. Targen Hucrele, A Fighter brave and intelligent and Sharwyn Hucrele an Enchantress taken by the party Leader Sir Bradford of Almas, a Paladin of Iomedae. Finally the party was rounded out by Karakas, a Half-Orc Ranger...and sometime caravan guide for the Hucrele Mercantile interests.

These hero's set out to investigate the gorge and the Citadel therein....and now 3 days later, no word...no sign...and the town begins to fret. Mayor Hucrele has put the call out for those who would take up arms and go in search of the Hero's of Oakhurst....

Who will answer the call.

what I can do as a player:

1. post daily... a definite can do for me on almost every day... some weekends might see me posting late at night but I will post.
2. work well with others
3. take a back seat when others are 'starring'
4. communicate respectfully, hopefully that will be a two-way street...
5. do my best to interact well with others and play an interesting character.

character concept:

1. My concept is to begin as a Spellscar Oracle, and segue later into Witch OR begin as an Ancestor Oracle and stay in that class without multiclassing, whichever works best for the game/campaign
SO with that mind:
Race: aasimar
class: Spellscar Oracle
archetype: none
party roll: healer, with some damage capabilities as well.
2. No backstory yet, but basically, the bastard get of a woman who fled from her home when she discovered she was with child. Her nother ended up in Oakhurst and stayed, married a local blacksmith, who raised the strange child as if she were his own. Both parents are now deceased and her 1/2 brothers and sisters are all elderly or deceased themselves, but she is still young. Considered strange by the folk of Oakhurst, she lives on the edges of town, barely making a living selling herbal remedies.
3. Character goal: to find out who.. and what... her real father is/was, and meet him if he still lives.
4. writing sample:

While she considered herself no hero, Tae heard the mayor's call even in her small hovel on the outskirts of the small town. One of her many 'voices' told her of it and her heart leapt in her chest. She wasn't sure why at first. She had known all along, had felt it from the beginning, that the earthquake was no natural event. That the entire party sent to investigate it might be lost was sad indeed.

Tae finished the tea she was making for Lorna's cough, and packaged it up. Rather than simply run over to her house and drop it off, she dressed for travel, gathered up a pack, and headed into town. After stopping off at Lorna's with the tea, she headed to the mayor's office, her footsteps almost strange to her, as if she were following a course she wasn't directing herself.

When she got to the mayor's office, she was struck with second thoughts. She was never really accepted in town, and now she wanted their acceptance on a quest to find the town's heroes? What was she thinking? She looked around in panic, but was alone in the waiting room. Was no one else answering the call, or were they already all in with the mayor? She waited nervously...

GM:
I'm going to have to see if I can find the Sunless Citadel. I bought that years ago and haven't found a way to play it. I'm going to use it purely for background purposes, not Metagaming. If it's going to be a problem, let me know.

Fallen Mage- naw wont be a problem.

I know most of us playing in PBP do so to get our role playing fix. It really doesn't bother me if folks have a some knowledge, as long as you don't have your character have sudden insights all the time ;)

Expressing Interest & Dotting.

Half-Orc Expert (into Rogue - Scout or Trapsmith favored, crafting thru Master Craftsman?). Dex based, no the typical Str based Half-Orc.

Possibly knows Karakas as a mentor, distant relative... looks up to him at any rate, trying to emulate.

Although working well with others, he's learned to rely on himself... the more capable he is, the more he can contribute to any team. Crafting will be a love and fondness of the "tools of the trade". Crafting utility items (wondrous). We'll see if it goes further.

Thanks.

I've got this cool Polearm fighter. I'd like to see if he fits somewhere. I'll re-adjust tonight, and consider starting as a warrior instead. I like simple man becomes hero type games, and literature. He was made for a Ptolus campaign, but I can adjust the background if chosen.

I don't know if I should apply to this

the character idea is applied to another game. bit also the fact that the applicant is based off another character that has been through all of these mods back in 3.0 days.

I have the complete adventure stories written from my chaarcter's perspective in book form...

will keep posted depending on the other application.

Dotting for interest. Human adept to go cleric. Update a background by tomorrow.

Edward Sobel- Theres no reason you shouldn't apply. A) Im not a stickler for folks joining who have knowledge as I mentioned to fallen Mage, especialy since Im tweaking the original modules in a slighty different direction by adding Wererats of Relfrin (an adventure from dungeon magazine that I particularly like) and Dragon Mountain..instead of playing through the original adventures after 7th level.
and B) I also don't mind folks running the same character they ave in a different game. My experience is characters tend to evolve during a campaign, and as we play the character will take on a life of its own.

and NEFG- Im Kilain in your game currently, so we have similar backgrounds in gaming :D Im eager to see your submission.

About me as a player:

1. While the timing of it may vary, I can post daily or more.
2. I am not a fan of Player VS player. I try to play characters folks would WANT to be around, or at least don't want to kick to the curb five minutes after you meet them. :)
3. I'm actually kind of bipolar about the spotlight. I often enjoy it when its on me, but other times I'm happy to coast in someone else's shadow.
4. As the above might indicate, I try to communicate respectfully. I'm a private person in a lot of ways, so I won't immediately spill RL details, but I also try to mind my manners and give the same courtesy I hope to receive from others.
5. Bouncing off other characters can be a load of fun for me. I'd like to think I'm good at it, but it's also possible I've just been very lucky to run into some good players who bring out the best in my game. Perhaps it is both. I'm quite cool with connections between characters (Siblings, old friends, etc) if it helps flesh out two backstories and helps a party forming in the first place make more sense.

My concept:

1. My concept is a halfling wizard. I'm thinking Illusionist, but if that specialization will be ineffective for this adventure, I can switch it to something else. His role in the party would be arcane support and spoiler mixed with some blasting. I don't plan on multiclassing.

2. I'm thinking said Halfling (He'll probably go by the name Ekan Waterfield as that's a prexisting Alias I can alter without having to make a new one) has a mother who escaped from Cheliax with a few bits of property from her old master. Among them was a slim spell book, though she didn't understand its full value. She married a kind native Andoran halfling in the area. Ekan was born, and later found the book in the family attic. Whether self taught, or having managed to get some mentoring in on the sly, he has become a half decent wizard. His parents would prefer he stick to the safer job of clerk/scribe for the family business. Ekan has bigger dreams though.

3. Ekan has multiple goals, some very likely out of his reach for the first few years of his life as a wizard. While not greedy, he'd like to live well. Indeed, he dreams of a tower all his own. After all, the townsfolk almost have to respect a wizard with a tower! Sometimes he worries that Andoran has no proper Magic Academy, and with Devil dealing Cheliax on it's far (From him) border, that sounds like a strong imbalance in magic to him. He's too young to be a teacher, but if a kind NPC started one, he'd likely become a supporter of the project. Lastly, with his mother having been a slave, he despises that institution, and would be glad to either set up a save haven for other escaped slaves, or foil the machinations of slavers. The latter is not likely in his home country, but one never knows.

4. Writing Sample:

Ekan had sighed wistfully when he saw the adventurers headed off to explore the citadel. They were doing what he longed to do. He should, he thought with a bit of a frown, had stepped forward and offered his services as well, but whether it was his mother's asking him not to go, or his own insecurities, he had not. The more he thought about it, the less it set well in his belly.

Andorans, be they human, halfling, or other, had a phrase for taking your own path: On the Wing. Ekan longed to be on the wing. He wondered if another chance would come again. To his surprise, it did! Three days after the first party had gone out and a new call was heard. Another party to find, perhaps save, the first one. Ekan silently rejoiced at the chance, and then immediately felt ashamed for not thinking of those poor missing folks first.

Still, the Heroes of Oakhurt in need was just one more reason he had to do this. Gathering his gear, goods, and precious book together, Ekan whistled for his familiar, and raced to the mayor's office. Hopefully, by the time his mother found out, he'd be committed to an adventure.

Alrick the Lesser - Human - Commoner - Favored Class: Paladin, fighter or Cavalier, haven't decided yet

Concept:
1. Alrick the Lesser is the son of Alrick Fens, owner of the Eage's Cry Tavern in Oakhurst. The Elder Alrick is a loud and boisterous sort, veteran of many battles and quick with a story and a laugh. The Lesser is a refined, quiet sort, always has been. He prefers books and solitude to the rauccous scenes of the Tavern, but he works there as a dutiful son, cooking meals and cleaning tables.

I see him as tagging along with the replacement heroes without his father, or the town's, say-so.

Backstory:
2. Alrick has lived his entire life, outside a trip to Almas once. Alrick has no brothers, and his mother died as he was brought into the world. Alrick aspires more than anything to join the Eagle Knights of Andoran and ride to glory in the name of Andoran and Iomedae.

Character Goal:
I want this character to grow naturally as a result of the obstacles he enoucnters. At the start his goal is to be an Eagle Knight, but that is not set in stone. Alrick is naieve and eager, being all of sixteen, that's perfectly natural. His first fight will likely result in shock and true horror, his first wound will be a painful awakening to the reality of the situation. However, he will remain driven to attain his goal and help his town. Just wether or not he's driven to Paladin-hood remains to be seen.

Writing sample:
"Ale, Son, and plenty of it!" his father's voice boomed from the common room. Alrick stashed his book and gave the stew pot a quick stir.

Dutifully filled Pewter mugs were presented to The Elder and his guests. Alrick spied the mayor, and several other men. One wore the sigil of House Naran, a wealthy looking man. Another man, wearing a perfectly coiffed wig was clearly an Elect of the People's council. Normally impressive enough, but when Alrick caught sight of the Eagle Knight epaulets born by the woman sitting next to the Elect, his breath caught in his throat. He stared, openly, for a long moment before his father's heavy hand came to rest on his shoulder.

"Check the stew boy, and no gaping at the guests, hm?" The Elder said in an unusally sotto voice. The huge man winked at this son, and gave him a push back into the kitchen. Alrick paused at the door and turned, admiring the woman again.

Plain, but infused with authority and strength, she seemed aloof from the laughter and reminscing of her companions. Her gaze rested on each man in turn, as well as the door, and then rested on Alrick. He justs stared, unsure of what to do. She shot him a quick grin, and her gaze turned back to Alrick's father, his story reaching a typcial crescendo of bluster and volume.

Alrick vanished back in to the kitchen to stir the stew, fishing out his copy of "The Lady Eagle, and grinning as he dove back into the story.

Working up a dwarven rogue, won't have time to give the writing sample justice until tomorrow though.

I would like to submit a a half-elf cleric of Shelyn which I made for a Jade Regent campaign. I have to adapt his background but that should be fairly easy. He would be a healer nad support character, plus in some cases also party face. He was a street rat that got taken in, by another cleric of Shelyn. As for goal he is searching for inspiration to make a song better than that of his teacher.

I’ve two character concepts for application. For a writing sample, please find a post of my character in another PbP.

Lantern Bearer:
Elf Neutral Good Warrior-3, Ranger-2, Lantern Bearer+; role: archer
Abandoned in Oakheart, he replaced his father to work as an herbalist. Always wondering why, his starting goal is to discover why his father abandoned him, which is to keep an eye on the evil discovered by the adventure. When he gets to 5th level, his father returns to recruit him into the Lantern Bearers, so his goal becomes to hunt drow or whatever connects to the game.

Human Noble Scion:
Human Neutral Good Aristocrat-3, Gunslinger (mysterious stranger)-2, Noble Scion+; role: face
After completing his education and training as a barrister, this son of a nobleman is summering at his family’s estate of Oakheart. His goal is to live an adventure that he has only read about. I’m not set on gunslinger. Maybe Paladin or Bard depending on what the group needs.

Whew. Thanks, good to know. I just didn't want the rest of the party looking at my character going "So... uh, you DO anything?" :)

Cast them on us, make us think we're in a better place... Boost morale!

Black Thom wrote:

I like it, but "Find a happy place! Find a Happy Place!" is a dubious battle cry at best ;)

Wow!

I like the idea, and am inspired to build a character based on one I played in an old RPGA Classic module back in the day. He was a simple farm-hand who was chosen by his god to be a Paladin, and notified of it in his dreams. He, of course, doesn't really think he's a Paladin. He's just a farm hand.

So, should I submit this character concept starting as a Paladin, or can I stretch your generous NPC class rules and go from Commoner to Paladin? {edit} Ah, I reread the section and now understand this is not an issue. The character simply won't receive a Favored Class bonus while advancing as a Commoner.

Just thinking out loud, I guess.

EDIT: Heh. I see that Corvus Red has already submitted basically this idea! Oops.

Character concept:
Human Commoner who becomes a Paladin (Warrior of the Holy Light, probably) It is kinda important for the character not to think about using magic, but for the magic to be more innate . . .. Party role? Simple-minded, helpful grunt and moral compass. He'll be a little handicapped as a Commoner for a bit, but it will work.

Larry grew up on his family's assigned patch of dirt, caring for the animals, the crops, and what equipment his family had managed to accumulate over the generations. He built a reputation for being honest, hard-working, and willing to help. When Mayor Hucrele called for help finding out what had happened to her children, no one was surprised that Larry offered his services. That is simply who he has proven himself to be through the years.

Larry's desires are pretty simple. Makes sense, given that he is, too. He wants to make life easier for his family. He wants everyone to have the opportunity to live together in reasonable peace and quiet. If he knew about singing Kum-ba-ya, he might want everybody to gather in a circle and do that, but only if it would really make them happier and help them get along together better. The character concept gets drug into adventures and danger because somebody needs to do something, not because he goes looking for things.

Writing Sample:
Barry and his boys were up and out, starting the day's chores just after dawn. Larry, the 4th child and 3rd son, had already let their couple of cows out of the barn and mucked their stalls before the world started shaking. Larry's eyes went as wide as the cows' did. Once the shaking stopped the family gathered back at the house by instinct. Tom and Jim were trying to make light of it, and laughing about how hard the chickens were trying to hide. Fran just sat down, looking out towards the field their father, Barry, had left for that morning. Cora, their mother, was trying to get them all to drink a little ale to calm their nerves.

When Barry came running up, he was obviously more agitated than his children had been while waiting for him. He was glowing red from the exertion of running back in from the field and sweating far more than the weather made reasonable. He downed a mug of ale without slowing to breathe, and then turned to Fran. "Go tell Kerowyn there's something moving down in the gorge! I don't know what it is, but I heard metal on stone, I think! Go on, now! Git!"

Barry's sons took turns watching at the edge of the gorge, waiting to see if there was something to raise an alarm about. They had seen the community's heroes walk down into the gorge. They knew that there had been no tell-tale noise, nor any opportunity for these heroes to sneak out, really. When Kerowyn asked for volunteers to go find out what had happened, Cora's response was immediate. "Larry, NO! You can't follow them and vanish too! Stay here, safe, and help make sure we get a good crop this year." Barry didn't say anything. He just nodded and pointed at the barn before holding his wife.

Larry walked into the barn and looked around for a few minutes. "Down into the gorge. Probably into the walls somehow. Pick and shovel seem most likely." With that bit of deep thought behind him, Larry picked up the tools that he thought were probably going to be the most useful, and headed into town to volunteer.

Obviously, I edited things in after you responded. Actually, I was doing it when you responded, but I can't prove that.

well dont let that stop you. Submit a character idea.

Noone has been selected yet. Thursday Eve, Friday and Saturday I will be looking at everyone. I will be making my decision on several criteria ;) including but not limited to how close everyone followed the instructions :D

and How i think the people will mesh as a party.

as well as the writing sample and how i like the character.

Grommund Geargrip

Character Concept
Male Dwarf Rogue (Scout), Party role will be trapfinder/disabler, scout, and secondary melee. Second level will likely be a dip into fighter. He would have the Craftsman, Deep Warrior and Magic Resistant alternate racial traits.

Backstory:

Grommund was born in Rolgrimmdur, third child of a prostitute and a thief. His two older brother's and younger sister's patronage are questionable, but the four saw each other as full siblings.

When Grommund was 38 (late teens by human standards), his father was murdered by a rival thief. He and his siblings had been well trained and they took up the family business. They had successfully pulled off several heists before attempting to steal from the thief who had killed their father. He knew they were coming and set up a trap for them with the city watch. In the ensuing battle Grommund's older brothers sacrificed themselves so he and his sister could escape. He fled with her to a hideout, but after a few days they were found out. Grommund was charged with grand larceny and harboring a criminal (his sister was still a minor, so she was let off). He was given the option of having his favored hand cut off and his forehead branded, or to join the most dangerous unit of the Rolgrimmdur Darklands infantry. Needless to say, he chose the latter.

Despite the fact that he had been raised outside the law, Grommund found that he flourished in the structured environment of the military. His preexisting skill set found great use as a scout. He served for four years, scouting tunnels for Darklands patrols. He survived encounters with orcs, duergar and troglodytes. It was a more natural feature of the subterranean realm that nearly did him in. One day while scouting he unknowingly walked into a patch of ghost mold. He succumbed to its effects, and was so injured that he barely managed to crawl away from the mold. The ghouls living in the cavern beyond the patch walked past him and ambushed his unit. Four soldiers were killed, and Grommund took the blame. In failing to spot the mold, he'd caused their deaths. As punishment he was exiled from Rolgrimmdur.

Seeking a new start after his shameful exile and near death experience, Grommund made his way to the surface, and east into human lands. He drifted until ending up in the village of Oakhurst. He's worked there as a locksmith for the last eight years. Now fifty years old, he's settled into his peaceful life, and put his past behind him. That was until the heroes went missing.

Character Goal:
Grommund wants to earn his way back into the respect of the dwarves of Five King's Mountains, so that he can return and find out what has befallen his sister. He does not want to take up permanent residence with the dwarves, simply regain permission to enter their realm.

Writing Sample:

Grommund sat at his workbench, his vision blurring after hours of the tedious work. He was attempting to slot a tightly curled spring into a small interior crevice of a partially completed lock. He pushed a little too hard and the tense spring rocketed out of the lock to strike him on the cheekbone, just below the eye. "Torag's hemorrhoids!" he cursed as a drop of blood dripped down his cheek. Closing his eyes he took a couple deep breaths. Cannae bludy weel concentrate oan a gods damned hin'! Standing up from his bench he walked over to the small washbasin and polished tin mirror next to the door to the interior of his house. Leaning down he splashed the tepid water over his face and head. He looked up into the mirror and saw his own distorted and scarred reflection. Ghost-white hair, and craggy features. Black irises surrounding white pupils.

His reflection seemed to dissolve before his eyes as his mind led him unwillingly back down the dark roads of the past. He was again in the Darklands, muggy heat and pitch dark blackness were pressing down on him. His knees ached from walking in a silent crouch for many hours, and sweat beaded on his skin under his chafing armor. His black and white vision revealed the tunnel opening into a cavern ahead. He crept forward slowly and placed his hand on the wall for support as he peered past the entrance and into the cave. Too late he felt the fuzz under his palm, saw the slight glitter of the mold. A cloud of white spores burst over him. As they filled his lungs white spots clouded his vision. He could feel the life draining out of him as visions of his own body rotting and decomposing flashed before his mind's eye. Shaking his head violently, Grommund wrenched himself back to the present.

Ah cannae lit somethin' loch 'at happen tae Kerowyn's kids. Hoo coods Ah see 'er face afterwards? Grommund took another long look at himself in the cloudy mirror. Nigh oan thee days an' ye shoods hae bin wi' them tae start. Nodding to his reflection, he strode over to the wall where his worn and pitted handaxes hung. He opened the chest under them and strapped on his studded leather armor. He tucked his tools into a pouch at his belt before finally thrusting the two axes into their loops at the small of his back. He stretched his head to the side until his neck cracked, then after setting his mouth in a resolute line Grommund strode from his workshop in search of the Mayor.

There's my submission. If you don't like the scottish accent for dwarves or anything else about it I'm very flexible. I'd rather tweak the character than not get accepted. I can post every day. Thank you for your consideration.

I know Kilain, I checked your alias' this morning. <(~_~)>

Targen couldn't be coincidence. Lol

Zarrick Deshain
Human Adept (Cleric)

Party roll- group healer, divine and arcane caster as well as melee combat.

Backstory:
Zarrick was born and raised in Oakhurst by his parents until his 12th year of life. His parents were killed in an attack by a horde of orcs and goblins. The horde was defeated and pushed back to whatever foul hole they expelled from, but not before they left the entire area in complete turmoil. He managed to survive by hiding in a small trap door in the floor of his home. After the sounds of battle had died down, Zarrick decided to come out of hiding and look for his parents. When he found them they had been both been slain. He wept for a long while till a man dressed in a suit of chainmail wielding a heavy mace stood before him. He wore a symbol around his neck, a symbol he soon would come to know as his destiny, the symbol of Serenrae.
Warren Lightbringer took Zarrick in and watched over him and taught him the ways of healing the sick, divine and arcane magic. He had a weapons trainer as well to teach him how to wield a mace of his own. His other duties for the church is to keep track of the temples tithe donations and to help keep the books in order.

Character Goal:
Zarrick’s goal is to someday be able to commune with his parents and tell them goodbye and to build his own temple to pay homage to his savior goddess, Serenrae.

Writing Sample:
In his daily routine of going over the temple's tithe ledger, Zarrick sits at his small desk. A knock on the door interrupts his concentration of counting multiple numbers, so now he must start all over. "In the name of Serenrae, who is it?" he says in a gruff manner. To his surprise it is his mentor Warren Lightbringer. Zarrick lowers his head and says, "Forgive me Mentor, I, I, didn't realize it was you." Warren with his hands on his hips, smiles and replies, "It is quite alright Zarrick, you are forgiven." He pauses for a few moments and continues. "I have disturbing and exciting news to bring to your attention. It seems the group of adventurers that were sent out to investigate the old dwarven citadel have not been heard from for quite some time. The mayor is looking for another group to go and find out what has happened to them. You have been training for many years young Zarrick and I feel it is time for you to go out and put your talents to good use." Zarrick interupts and replies, "Are you sure I am ready?" The old cleric say to him, "You are more than ready for this quest. Your training with healing magic will be of great importance to a small band of adventurers. Have faith in yourself as Serenrae and I both do." Zarrick sits back and thinks about what his old friend and mentor has told him. After a short while he looks up and says, "If you really think I can do this, it will be an honor to go and help this group and also spread the good word of Serenrae." Warren Lightbringer smiles and says to him, "You will not disappoint me or the Dawnflower Goddess Serenrae."
"Before you go I have something for you Zarrick. When I found you and your parents I said a prayer for them and checked your home. I found this pouch with the money they had saved. I thought it only right to give it to you when you most needed it." he hands the pouch over and bows to Zarrick. "Thank you Mentor he says in a shaky voice. I will use this wisely." He gets up from the chair gives Warren a hug and leaves the temple to get ready for his first adventure, and perhaps his destiny.

I am going to have to withdraw from this one. Have a lot on my plate at the moment and suffering a bad case of writer's block.

Jelani, I don't have any issues with you using a known language/accent to simulate dwarven long as I can understand the post lol

Fallen_Mage- I can appreciate that and totally understand. Best wishes to you in your life. If something changes reapply ;)

you can check out the profile for the character idea but I will have to redo the crunch for the right level.

the concept is what I am looking to use...

I'll go ahead and put a partial toe in the fire (iron in the water?) and say that I am considering making a Half-Elf Adept, moving to Witch. I'll have something in by the Thursday deadline if I'm able to make a go of it.

I think Cody has been updated appropriately. He will begin as a Warrior, and soon multi-class into fighter. (Pole Arm Expert)

GMMichael

What more (besides character names) do you need to move my applications from partial to complete?

cheers

I don't know about in your case, Jubal, but I'm guessing my editing of the one post let him miss the fact that I tired to provide everything he asked for in that post.

If I've missed something, I, too, would like to know so that I can ammend the error.

There's a list of exactly what he wants in his first post...

GMMichael wrote:

I will be choosing 6 players to take this journey with me. Please provide the following when requesting consideration.

1. A Character Concept adhering to the Character Creation Rules.
-Concept is Race, Class, Probably Archetypes and party roll.

2. A bare bones backstory that we can hone together as a party on why your character is choosing to be an adventurer and why they live in this small farming hamlet.

3. A Character Goal you would like to see woven into the 'story'

4. A writing sample. please keep this to less then three paragraphs. The sample should take into account the opening paragraph found below.

Yes Hustonj, that is exactly right. I did not see you'd edited your post. I have moved you.

Jubal, You have the majority of what I wanted, except for the writing sample. and an indication which character you would prefer..if either. You may be equally interested in running either.

I know you put a link to see your writing style, I read it...but also part of it is to write how you would for this character.

There are three reasons I asked specifically for this. A) To get a feel for the character myself. B) To have an introduction for not only you...but for everyone else to see. C) To see how well you follow minor DM instructions.

The last for a coupe reasons, Ive found that one of the biggest problems in PBP is missing things...as I did with Hustonj's edit. It happens and is easy to do. So careful reading is needed and understanding if things are missed ;)

so once I have a couple paragraphs for either or both Ill move them into the full concept category.

Class breakdown as it stands-

Full Concept
Ridge- Ekan Waterfield Halfling Illusionist
JAF0- Tae Aasimar Oracle (Spellscar)
CorvusRed- Alrick the Lesser Human Commoner Intent-Paladin? Cavalier? Fighter?
WesternWolf777-Grommund Geargrip Dwarven Rogue
New England Frost Giant- Zarrick Deshain Adept Intent-Cleric
Scranford- Cody Ulshak Human Warrior Intent-Fighter
Hustonj- Larry Human Commoner Intent-Paladin (Warrior of The Holy Light)

Partial Concept
Hassan Ahmed- Black Thom Half-Orc Expert Intent-Rogue
Rafael Bronzatti- Rafael The Silent Half Elf Cleric
Jubal Breakbottle- ?? Elf Warrior Intent-Ranger
Jubal Breakbottle- ?? Human Aristocrat Intent-Gunslinger (Mysterious Stranger)
Edward Sobel- Klor Kragsson Dwarf Fighter
ph unbalanced- ?? Half Elf Adept Intent-Witch

and to better aide everyone involved so they know part of what Ill be using a basis for choosing a group...

Ill be taking 1 from each of the following categories- A Primary combatant (has to be developed towards a +1 BAB class), An Arcanist (has to be developed towards an Arcane Caster), A Healer (has to be developed towards a Divine Caster), A Trapsmith (has to have trap finding and in the 6 skill ranks classes or above, A Secondary Combatant (Be developed towards a +1 BAB and have either divine caster or 4+ skill class), A Secondary Caster (Be able to cast either arcane or divine spells and have something else bringing to the table)

I will not be counting the NPC classes against your choices but more the character intent.

Thanks for the clarification. I had thought that a writing sample from another game would satisfy your request. It will be challenging for me to write in the voice of those characters in their current, undeveloped state.

Beyond that, I really appreciate you revealing your selection categories. Because only my archer fits your primary combatant category. And you will probably want to select a front-line melee type for that category. I know I would.

Therefore I will withdraw my applications, because there doesn't seem to be a fit here.

cheers

actually, your Gunslinger would've been a good fit for the secondary combatant category. But, Ill respect your wishes and withdraw your request. If something changes reapply.

Are we allowed to use player companions to find traits?

Id rather you didn't unless you can give me a really good reason why you should.

The traits in those are usually a tad bit more powerful than normal traits and are designed to tie you to an AP.

If you wanted to 'reskin' one and make it apply for this game Id listen to your request...But I cant guarantee Id agree.

That is a distinct possibility then. I don't have the companion. So youd have to tell me what the trait is. Id probably say yes to that.

ahh looks like I got work to do tonight after work. (ok that sounded wierd)

for writing sample can I just llink to game threads that have been used by the character or similar characters?

{I have got get away from the Avalon Chronicles for a bit first)

also will link character portrait in the profile.

but either way can't do at work all books and files at home...

I remember playing these when they were first released and I have many fond memories of those sessions. I would be interested in playing in this, however, I am a complete PbP virgin. Is it possible for someone with no previous experience joining the game?

absolutely Scarrlupio. Im always game to help someone new.

Are you familiar with the game enough to come up with a concept?

Klor- I understand. The biggest reason not to just link to a previous post, is to take into account the intro to the game in my first post.

I only need a few sentences saying why you are answering the call....;)

and note you are in the most contested category....

Yes, I already have a concept in mind with a beginnings of a backstory, just the process of playing the game online is alien to me.

Biggest thing to be aware of is the pace is SLOW. A combat can take weeks. It really is for the folks who need a role playing fix, but cant get together frequently with friends to play....or those that love the role playing aspect as much as the roll playing part ;)

That's why writing a sample is sooo important.

Being a slower pace has to be offset by love of the story, or you will get bored

Do you want us to complete the crunch/alias before the application deadline, or was my previous post enough to make your decision?

What you submitted is fine for my initial thoughts. Come tomorrow Night when Im looking at each in depth, Ill start asking questions. No need to do the crunch...although I would like to know maybe a 1-2-3 on the order youd prefer the character (ie 1. Cavalier 2. Paladin. 3 Fighter)

My plan is to do each category and gradually build the group. So Thursday Night Ill do the Primary Combatant, Friday The Arcane caster and Healer. Saturday the Trapsmith, and the Secondary Combatant. Sunday Morning the Secondary Caster.

As I say who's in you can start working up the crunch.

We will start working on things together in the discussion thread once ach player is in, Id like a cohesive friendly group who has an idea of each persons play styles.

Concept: Huaman Fighter (weapon master archetype)/(possibly dual classing as Bard)with the intent to go into the Duelist prestige class if possible.

Backstory: Son of a disgraced and displaced noble, his family moved to Oakhurst to stay out of the public eye and avoid any ridicule or embarrassment. While still young, Lyrralt's father taught him to fight with a gentleman's weapon, the rapier. Eventually, however, his father's guilt got the better of him and he sank into a depression that he attempted to alleviate with alcohol which only served to worsen the situation. Tired of the late drunken nights, Lyrralt's mother moved back to the city and lived with her family. Enduring comments about his father, Lyrralt has vowed to step out from the shadow of his father and make a name for himself and perhaps help bring his father back up as well. The call to search for the missing heroes just might be this chance.

Yep I can vouch for the lengthy combat sequences as I run a game of my own. The story is what keeps the game going though. Just be patient and post when its your turn in combat is all I can tell you.

GM, I am really looking at Merciful Healer(Archetype). My character fits the part very well as he wasn't able to save his parents from their untimely death.

It is from Ultimate Combat. FYI
