Yeah, I'm from the Philadelphia area, and in the last two days the temperature went from late summer to early winter in a flash.

I've got a lot of reading to catch up on, too.

@Niadroub, happy early birthday to your wife!

Sorry folks, it turns out my feeling extremely tired and sore is due to my being very sick. Spent most of the day curled in a ball in bed, and just got up now to throw up what little was inside me. Feeling a lot better for that and hope to be back to normal tomorrow.

Once you're back...

How do you feel about the idea of a custom level 1 Erastilean cleric spell for preserving meat from the hunt? Similar to gentle repose but could not be used to preserve a body for the purposes of raise dead and can only be used on bodies of animals which Erastileans consider acceptable for food?

I'd say regular castings of purify food and drink would do it. You'd want to cast it at least once a day and with all the boar it'd be multiple castings.

Guys:

Do you want to clear out some of the goods we have found and exchange them for Oleg's Potions?

I probably don't need them as I can heal myself but it seems like it wouldn't hurt to get them. Those without healing abilities can carry them for emergencies. Also the shield of faith potion would be good for a tank-type character.

Worth noting that we do also have a wand of CLW.

I was looking at the Party Loot spreadsheet and I couldn't tell what had been claimed by anyone. Did anyone take the MW Scale mail or the MW Studded Leather? Elena could use either one.

There's nothing there of interest to my guy, except maybe those healing potions. I just claimed one. Since we have the wand, let's hold off on buying more for now, and save up for some more serious situational healing like cmw potions or some buffs.

Richard has the highest AC, but I don't know much about vigilantes and their tanking abilities. Definitely give the existing shield of faith potion to a melee striker if Richard doesn't want it. And I'm fine with buying another one.

Is Xantria's HP really at 6?

I'm hoping to invest in some dark leaf leather armor later on but that's long term. Vigilantes can get medium and heavy armor proficiencies but he's a dexterity build and I've got other ideas for his choices.

Sorry I haven't been posting much - it feels like we're lurching from one encounter to the next a lot more rapidly than I'm used to for a PbP game, combine that with getting stumped on what Xan would do and the time zone differences and it's easy for me to fall behind.

I'll try to improve as we go on, it's just that Xan's not much good at the planning stuff, or at least acknowledges that the others are all much better in that department.

EDIT: Also, I've switched Xan's character sheet over to a Google Sheets one I found recently. Takes a bit longer to load, but it feels a bit nicer to use than Myth Weavers' ones.

Are you sure you want to do that?

The first book of Kingmaker is very much lurching from encounter to encounter I'm afraid. The second book continues this, but with the start of the kingdom building thrown in you do get more varied encounters.

I can see most of the party have plans for their characters, and directions they want to take them, and I want to reach that stage. I'm finding that the early part of Kingmaker can turn into a grind, which may be why so many Kingmaker games fizzle out?

Sandboxes in RL games have a very different feel to them and keep everyone involved. In PbP they don't work very well I'm finding. Especially with the hilariously unbalanced encounter tables that were provided for Kingmaker.

I'm thinking of ways to speed things up and get to the more involved and role play friendly parts of the AP. What does everybody else feel about this?

I feel like I have expressed my thoughts about this very topic quite a few times on these forums, actually. Here is my most succinct post I could find.

Being honest in the voice chat Kingmaker game I've run I cut out the random encounters, the sidequests aren't so bad and I came up with stuff relevant to the characters as well as jaunts into the Emerald Spire but I'm usually not bothered with random encounters at the best of time. They're just padding and they're less of a good idea in a play by post.

I'm up for trying different things. Depending on your own preference plenty of other interesting RP to do, the PCs in that game went to the Outlaw Council and did politics and intrigue.

Interesting post, and very applicable here. I am considering just skipping the encounter tables, they really are that bad. Kingmaker was oe of the last not to tell you when to level the characters up sadly, so a lot of it is grinding for XP in the early part.

How do you all feel about me just resolving the many little encounters automatically, having you handle the more important events, and getting us through to the end of this book quickly?

Same here, sounds good. I'm gonna duck over to the Kingmaker subforum too, see if anyone over there's posted level-up recommendations like what subsequent APs have.

I know I risk spoilers but, honestly, I read through the whole thing years ago. Don't remember enough to metagame and the milestones tend to be pretty vague-ish anyway.

If I recall, you can get a shambling mound at level 1 on a random encounter! That could be very fun or it could end the campaign right away.

You know how I feel! But I'm always open to other methods, also.

Not sure if you're using it but in ultimate campaign every hex you explore gives a little XP even if there are no encounters.

Are you sure you want to do that?

It does that for Kingmaker, but very little. For a party of 4 it was 100xp per hex, that's between the party, not each! Even putting it up to 150xp to match the larger party it's still not going to get you a level very quickly. Which is why they put in all the randoms I guess.
