Pro Tip:

The bonus from your theme means you should have one score that is an odd number. This seems pretty weird but the designers indicated that the extra point exists so that you have a chance to qualify for feats which have a score prerequisite that is an odd number. Otherwise the single point is only of use for resisting ability drain.

So here's a list of feats according to which Ability Score is a prerequisite. The list doesn't include any other prerequisites. But this should give you an idea of what feats you might want to build so that you qualify for.

Feats With Ability Score Requirements:
STR
Cleave STR 13
Great Cleave STR 13
Heavy Armor Proficiency STR 13
Powered Armor Proficiency STR 13
Heavy Weapon Proficiency STR 13

DEX
Mobility DEX 13
Agile Casting DEX 15
Shot on the Run DEX 15
Parting Shot DEX 15
Sidestep DEX 15
Improved Sidestep DEX 17
Nimble Moves DEX 15
Slippery Shooter DEX 15
Step Up and Strike DEX 13

INT
Technomantic Dabbler INT 15

WIS
Connection Inkling WIS 15

CHA
Minor Psychic Power CHA 11
Psychic Power CHA 13
Major Psychic Power CHA 15
Veiled Threat CHA 15

Miraj: It looks like all your scores are even, so you've forgotten to apply your extra +1. Actually, now that I count your points you may have overspent by one.

When I changed Miraj's theme, I adjusted some stats and did not update the profile list correctly. Strength should be 10 (had the mod correct) and Dex went up to 15. Thanks for pointing that out.

If I may ask, I have a few questions about your character. Note, you do not have to change anything on my part, as I am not the GM. I am just confused by several sections of your character sheet.

Questions:

1) How are your attack bonuses so high?
2) How did you afford the Corona laser pistol?
3) What is 'Ghost Killer'?
4) How do you have two feats?

Entiren: I'm guessing that a lot of that are copy & paste errors based on some previous character. Under equipment, the pulsecaster is the only weapon listed. Looks like he spent most of his starting cash on a datajack.

Builder142: I think you shorted yourself on ability score points. Between race modifiers, theme bonus, and starting build points, your scores should add up to a total of 73. Yours add up to 70. Also you have only 1 resolve point and you should have 4.

Phoenix Sunrider: There's nothing wrong with your character, and I personally like the ace pilot/star shaman combo. I play one in another game.

But it's worth mentioning that there are some characters that have already been accepted into the game, and one of them is an ace pilot/star shaman.

I doubt the group will end up with two characters with the same build. But it's not too late to change your character.

Yeah, sorry I didn't mention this earlier. I think that when I first saw your character, I had presumed that you knew what I was making. You could probably stay as a mystic if you wanted to, although going with a different connection. Alternatively, if you wish to stay a spellcaster, but distance yourself from me, I believe that a technomancer could be appreciated.

However, you don't have to take anything I say as a request or desire on my part. Do as you wish, I am just making suggestions.

This post is just a small moment of gratitude to the experienced players in this thread doling out constructive advice without being condescending. Y'all're saving me a hot minute, and I appriciate it.

I've got a few builds to poke through (Phoenix, Jehir, and Builder142), but if you're looking to make some changes, Phoenix, I'll wait until you're done with that (if you like the mystic, I encourage you to look at the other connections, and possibly the Solar Disciple theme from Pact Worlds).

I might have another look at the connections, so if one of them makes sense without breaking the entire background.

I'm a fan of the punch-caster build (as Peet can attest to; I play a melee technomancer in one of his games), and Vesk is a solid race to go with. If you do, I would recommend you look into Heavy Armor Proficiency and the spells jolting surge and junksword (the second is from Pact Worlds).

I sadly lack access to the Pact Worlds content at the moment... though I was certainly thinking of Jolting Surge.

If I did go with that my codename would have to be "The Lizard Wizard"

Jehir:
This is the first time I've seen someone actually play the solar armor solarian - people are too caught up with the flashy solar weapons, methinks. Glad to see you've taken this kinda-tricky class on - my notes:
  • I love the backstory and the borai origin. I already know who Ozymandius is and what their goals are, so expect some cryptic messages from time to time.
  • I know you're fairly MAD, but that AC has me extremely nervous for a melee fighter, even with the solar AC activated. If you can squeeze around some cash to start play with even just second skin, that might make a difference.
  • Speaking of cash, you're overpaying for environment clothing. It's 10 credits a set, and you have two sets, but spent 40 credits.
  • Neither here nor there, but the mental image of a returning spear is fairly amusing. You can always abstract a starknife as a boomerang, but a returning spear flying back through the air must look as awkward as hell.

Other than that, you look pretty damn good. Can't wait to see you in play!

Builder142:
Your post is missing the in-character application (see original post). Additionally, there's conflicting and inaccurate info in your statblock. You might wanna take another pass at that.

Well... I kinda started and just couldn't really stop until I finished. Withdrawing Phoenix Sunrider and instead submitting Orodolwa Senfira, vesk technomancer and only known practitioner of the forgotten "Way of the Intangible Claw".

Intro:
The reply back is surprisingly quick. The video feed cuts on to a green and bright blue vesk, taking up most of the screen space as he stares on with the race's signature neutral expression. The armor he wears is, interestingly, of kasathan design, though he seems to have taken the helmet off for the video. His short, boxy reptilian snout flares a bit before finally speaking.

"Fortuitous tidings, Veskana Kreel." To anyone who is familiar with Vesk culture, "Veskana" is a rough translation of "Most Respected and Dignified", chiefly used when addressing someone whose good side you really want to be on. The fact he's using it to address Kreel should be considered a high honor, especially to a non-Vesk! "I am Orodolwa Senfira, of Vesk Prime. I wish to bring honor to the Starfinder Society, with the gracious hope that its knowledge will help me hone both my mind and my body to previously unknown heights."

"I was born to Verasana Senfira and Maldroxa Senfira, reputable dignitaries of my homeworld. Much of Vesk society disregards knowledge that does not relate to combat as needless and a waste of time. I believe my current skills prove otherwise. I have looked to my people's history as a means of strengthening myself, and rediscovered the forgotten elegance and power that is... my apologies, words in Vesk do not easily translate to common tongue. The closest translation would be 'Path of the Intangible Claw'. It is a style of unarmed combat that promotes both physical perfection and mental growth. It combines magic and hand-to-hand combat, and demands knowledge of both oneself and one's foes. My peers have laughed this style off as antiquated and outdated. Again, I believe I have proven them substantially mistaken."

The reptile's jaw shifts a bit before continuing. "I believe that the mind is as much as weapon as any doshko. One must continually sharpen it to razor perfection to maintain combat superiority over your foe." He pauses and bows his head briefly, before continuing. "My humblest apologies, but I confess my training... lacks a set regimen. As I said, it is a forgotten art, long discarded for less intellectually inclined styles of war. Not without reason - strengthening both the mind and the body requires constant training and leaves little time for distractions. My people believe that to focus on one at the expense of the other helps shore up their weaknesses."

"I wish to join the respected ranks of the Society to strengthen my mind and learn as much as I can. I believe the knowledge is as great a weapon as any blade... it simply requires a will to wield it properly. My prior actions on my home world have left me in both an official and self-imposed exile. I sought to teach my rivals the uses of magic in honorable combat. They refuted my lessons... but as the general must demonstrate the worth of his rank, I had to demonstrate the worth of my studies. My foe is still alive, undoubtedly less rude, but I deemed that there was no worthy foe among my people, none who appreciated the weapons that I choose to wield. I exiled myself, but I believe they made it official. I confess, the result does not vex me."

"You asked what held me back from joining. The truth is, there is little benefit for me to not join the Society's respected ranks. I seek peers who appreciate my studies, respect my devotion, and share in my passions." Hard to believe someone so stoic can display passion! "I believe the honored members of the Society can fulfill these needs, and I in turn shall do all in my power to teach."

Orodolwa bowed his head respectfully, before straightening up, helmet under his arm as he pounded his chest with his fist. "I await a response with great anticipation. May your conquests be fruitful, your weapons sharp, and your honor unbroken."

I know we're getting down to the wire here! I'm still tweaking her build a bit, but I wanted to go ahead and post an intro for this lady.

Application:

A tall woman huddles over a datapad in her bunk aboard a crowded communal starship cabin. Her blue-green hair is coming loose from it’s braid, falling around her shoulders as she strains to hear the vid-clip over the clamor of conversation from her fellow passengers. She has the symmetrical face, trailing antennae, and long, slender limbs of the Damaya Lashunta, but something in the way she carries herself makes her look almost lanky and overly self-aware, not effortlessly graceful and lithe as most stereotypes would suggest.

Delicate fingers tap at the datapad, taking quick notes as the Dwarf’s questions start to pile up.

The vid-clip ends, and, without skipping a beat, she hits rewind and watches it again, paying close attention to ensure she hasn’t missed anything.

She is experienced in this type of interview, she reminds herself; how many grant applications she’d recorded during her stay at the University, the gods only know. But they had never failed to make her nervous back then either.

Once the clip ends a second time, the woman glances over her notes, her antennae twitching nervously as she mentally prepares her answers, takes a deep breath, and hits 'record'.

It is not the most flattering video; with nowhere private to sit or stand on such a packed passenger ship, she is forced to lean against the back of her bunk, holding the camera at arm’s length and resting it awkwardly on her knees.

“My name is Aureum Ophir,” she begins, but is immediately drowned out by a loud ‘whoop!’ followed by boisterous laughter from a group of humans and Ysoki playing cards on the bunk adjacent.

She raises her voice and enunciates, making her lilting and naturally melodic tone sound slightly strained at times, and starts again.

“My name is Aureum Ophir! I’m from Castrovel.
“I studied at the University of Qabarat. Most of my research revolves around pre-Gap artifacts and archives, although I also devoted time to alien ruins and planetary geological features! Perhaps you’ve read my paper on the remains discovered on Jedarat and their potential connection to--”
she cuts herself off, smiling coyly. “Well, of course I can provide you with a copy of my complete résumé.”

She pauses before continuing, her tone growing steady and serious. “As for my family, my parents… disappeared several years ago, on a research expedition. Presumed dead in a cave collapse. But...” She leans closer to the camera so she can lower her voice. “Their remains were never recovered; nor was their research.”

She shakes her head, visibly nervous, but holding herself together. It is not an easy memory; neither is it a fresh wound.

“I’m an archaeologist, Mr. Kreel. I believe in hard evidence. Without it, how can we possibly hope to piece together the past?
“I believed there was more to their disappearance. I suppose I still do. For a while, I tried to uncover the truth; and found nothing but dead ends. And then…”

She lowers her voice as much as she can without being lost in the background din. “I left Castrovel to follow a lead, and... the fortune that my parents had left me suddenly ran dry: thousands of credits, just, missing, like everything else in my life. I suppose that was my lowest moment; what, as you said, almost held me back. I was grieving, and afraid of whoever--whatever--was behind it all. And I was left with nothing.”

She is quiet for a long moment, and then shrugs, breaking the tension. “I might never find the answers; I have to move forward. I’ve managed to scrape by, for a while, but there’s only so much I can do on my own. That’s where Starfinder comes in. I believe we can do accomplish important things together.”

“As for your last question…” A small smirk begins to creep across her face, her voice becoming more animated as she continues, “Besides my professional background, I also happen to be a decent procurer of rare and valuable artifacts. And, as I’m sure the Society would agree, items of great historical significance deserve to be handled with care, studied! Not traded for a few credits and then forgotten on a godforsaken rock in the Diaspora somewhere!
“Unfortunately… Not everyone shares that view. I have had a few unpleasant encounters; pirates, cultists. Nothing major, except… if you ever send me back to Castrovel, best not expect me to receive a warm welcome from whoever is living comfortably off my parent’s credits.”

She lets several beats pass before leaning back against the bunk again, and smiles with learned professionalism. “Thank you, for this opportunity, Mr. Kreel. I look forward to hearing from you soon.”

Alright, recruitment closed! Here's the final applicant list. I'm gonna take a couple days to review and discuss characters with people, but I should have it all resolved by Friday.

Current party members:

  • Diedre Lhashi, a half-elf icon envoy (phrenic adept) who would make a decent starship captain or science officer, played by Itzi.
  • Entiren Vraken, a nuar ace pilot mystic with the star shaman connection who would make a superlative pilot, played by Art Burd.
  • Jehir Jatanus, a (formerly kasatha) borai death-touched solarian who would make a decent starship gunner, played by Peet.
  • Miraj Pavana, a summerborn ryphorian outlaw operative with the detective specialization who would make a decent starship engineer or science officer, played by Clebsch73.

Applicants:

  • Aureum Ophir, a damaya lashunta scholar operative with the thief specialization who would make a decent starship engineer or science officer, played by rutaskadis.
  • Builder142, an android outlaw mechanic with the exocortex AI who would make an excellent starship science officer or engineer, played by MrStr4ng3.
  • Mos Kifill, a damaya lashunta spacefarer mechanic with the exocortex AI who would make an excellent starship engineer, played by Bahbrahb.
  • Orodolwa, a vesk (???) technomancer who would make a fair starship engineer or science officer, played by CaptainFord.

Good luck everyone, hope to play with you soon.

The thing is, the solar weapon doesn't actually help your character even if you are a melee solarian. It can't be magical, it can't be made of a special material, it can't have weapon properties... it looks cool but it is about as good as the weakest advanced melee weapon you can get. The only advantage is you can't be disarmed.

In the end it came down to whether I wanted to get the Heavy Armor Proficiency feat or not. Light Armor + Solar Armor is still not as good as Heavy Armor, but eventually it gives you a free type of energy resistance which is nice (basically a free armor upgrade). And since I don't have a lot of feats to play with, making that decision made things simpler.

:)

FYI: Ozymandias' message came as a handwritten note on thick black paper with silver ink. :)

I know you're fairly MAD, but that AC has me extremely nervous for a melee fighter, even with the solar AC activated.

Good armor is basically the first thing on my shopping list. You will note that I have really good HP and SP for a first-level character.

The thing about AC in Starfinder is that enemies have their chance to hit modified upwards by roughly +3. This combined with the fact that armor in Starfinder is not as good as Pathfinder (and there are no shields or armor buff spells) means that unless you are really trying to optimize AC it won't make a lot of difference.

A CR 1 enemy typically has +6 to hit with their main attack. Which means that with a KAC of 13 they hit me on a 7 or better, or 14 times out of 20. 6 or better against my EAC. Improving my AC by 1 means I get hit 13 times instead of 14 times in 20 attacks. That's about a 7% reduction in damage. Not a huge thing.

It's only one set. You can combine two properties of clothing by doubling the cost of each type.

I envision it as tumbling end-over-end. A returning Starknife makes me think of the old Krull movie. :) I probably will switch to that eventually but the spear has the blocking property.

Hey, Orodolwa.

I agree with GM Jimbles recommendation about heavy armor. You have the STR necessary and no DEX bonus to worry about. As a Vesk your starting HP are good but they won't be that good.

Once you hit 3rd level your natural attack will become really useful. The Improved Unarmed Strike feat can expand on that if you want to spend a feat on it.

FYI though: I notice you have dropped your CHA to 8. Vesk don't get a CHA penalty. The rules state that you can reduce a score below its starting value if you want, but you don't get any points back for doing that.

@ Orodolwa

Just as a quick question, what is your theme? As far as I can see, nothing on your character sheet includes any mention of it.

Also, you appear to have overspent with your ability scores, which probably has to do with what Peet mentioned above.

Man, they went and changed all the rules on me... yeah, might have to do some stat adjusting.

As for my theme, Soldier. Gotta add that to... thought I did. So it should be a +1 to STR, with 3 points to make it 14 (16 with the racial stats), then 6 for to bring his INT to 14, and I guess drop the last one in CON, cause... I 'unno.

I also need to finish up his inventory... since I'll be emphasizing unarmed combat, that frees up some money for heavy armor and probably a mod for it... maybe Infrared Sensors...

I'm guessing you mean the Mercenary Theme?

See my previous post about odd-numbered scores. If there's a feat in there that you might want, now's the time to make sure your extra point helps you qualify.

@ Orodolwa

Just as a note, you may wish to get a (cheap) ranged weapon for in case an enemy is 'impossible' (read, really difficult) to get into melee range and you are out of spells for the day. For example, you could get a needler pistol for only 105 credits.

Yeah, I meant Mercenary... I'll get the hang of this eventually...

Thanks for the suggestions! It really helps getting a character who's both mechanically and thematically sound!

Orodolwa wrote:

You are welcome! If you are open to one more piece of advice, I might suggest that you shift some of your ability scores around. If I was in your place, I would probably put your last bonus into Intelligence, raising it up to a 15, and also drop your Strength down to a 15, in order to raise your Int to a total of 16. While yes, this would lower your attack and damage bonuses by one, it would raise all of your Int based skills by one, and would provide benefits to spellcasting later. More importantly, it would increase your resolve by one, to a total of four, which could potentially save your characters life.

However, remember that this is just a suggestion. All decisions about your character are your own.

It's tough to build a character with a key score that has a racial penalty. But it can certainly be worth it.

A big question will be what kind of spells you plan to have. An INT 14 is probably okay if you plan to try to avoid spells with saving throws. But if you expect to get a lot of spells that have saves then more INT might be better. It is hard to increase the spell save DC - ability scores and the spell focus feat are the only way, and in Starfinder, enemy saving throws improve a lot faster than your save DCs.

Orodolwa:
Alright, a melee technomancer. A few things:
  • This is minor, but I'm a stickler for the little things. You've listed Damoritosh as Oro's deity, but you've also listed your alignment as LG, and Damoritosh is LE. It's unusual to see someone worship a deity more than one alignment step away.
  • I see that you're added a needler pistol. It's always a good thing to have a ranged option. If you're not in love with the needler, you could always grab an azimuth laser pistol (more expensive, but targets EAC for greater hit chance) or swap out one of your cantrips for energy ray, which costs nothing but has some other limitations.
  • Your ability scores still don't add up right. It looks like you calculated skills and such with Int 15 (which does add up right).
  • You forgot to add in the Vesk Armor Savant ability - your EAC/KAC should be 14 & 16, respectively. That ability also takes your armor check penalty down to -1.
  • You've listed a CMD of 13 - 'CMD' in Starfinder is KAC+8, which should be 24.

Other than that, you look good!

Aureum Ophir:
It's always good to have an archaeologist! A few notes for you:
  • I see that you've gone with the Scholar theme and you're specializing in archaeology. That's a solid choice, but I wanted to make you aware that Pact Worlds contains a Xenoarchaelogist theme. Still +1 to Int, but the related skill is engineering, your theme knowledge is based around ancient tech, and higher level abilities allow you to spot traps and more easily read unknown languages. If you don't have access to Pact Worlds and are interested in the theme, let me know.
  • I think you're actually under on ability points - by my count, you've spent 8 of 10.
  • You've listed the attack bonus for both your tactical baton and azimuth laser pistol as +4, but I believe it's only +2 (0 BAB, +2 Dex).

Everything else looks fairly ship shape. Let me know if you have any questions!

I don't have access to Pact Worlds right now (I'll be buying a copy soon though), but yes I'm definitely interested, that theme it sounds super fitting.

Unless I'm mistaken, I have a -2 racial penalty to constitution so I believe I spent those 2 points there to avoid having a negative modifier

Thank for the feedback, all! I think I've got the stats figured out, and should be ready on that front...

@Jimbles - I went back and noticed that Damoritosh totally is LE... Did not consider that, I confess. However, I think I could actually make it work in terms of character for Orodolwa, kind of akin to the Separatist Cleric archetype in PF.

While Oro venerates Damoritosh and still upholds the values of victory above all and honorable combat, he has expanded on what he considers to be weapons (eg. his mind) by embracing a style of combat long forsaken by his people. Thus, he has taken something of a big picture approach to the concept of war itself, a la principles akin to Sun Zhu. "The greatest general is he who avoids conflict altogether", to him, is like winning a fight before his opponents even realize they've been challenged.

Granted, his style of diplomacy typically equates to "I have a thousand volts of lightning running through my scales. Are you SURE you want to pick this fight?" But in short, his training in the Path of the Intangible Claw has let him see conflict on a broader scope, so his definition of "conquest" is evolving little by little.

Of course, he won't back down from a challenge, and I would hardly call him the paladin type, but as his style of combat continues to evolve, his view of combat itself grows as well. Sorry, that turned out to be more long winded than I expected, but... yeah...

Yeah, this has been a super-useful recruitment thread to follow. Thanks everyone.

Since Damoritosh is kind of a "State Religion" for the Vesk, I could see that most Vesk probably honour Damoritosh in some way even if it is just "lip service" and their alignment widely differs.

Starfinder doesn't really have many alignment-dependant effects aside from some stuff to do with outsiders.

Thanks!

I was vert tempted by the Xenoarchaeologist Theme and it seems particularly fitting for the Starfinder Society. If the party already had some combat guys I might have made one. Also great for a trap-disabler character, though I don't think traps come up as often as Pathfinder.

That was tough, guys - had some really great characters, but there's only room for so many. Congrats to Aureum Ophir and Orodolwa - welcome to the party! If you're one of the following six people, please dot into the Discussion thread as soon as possible with your alias. We'll launch the campaign as soon as everyone's tapped in or Monday morning, whichever comes later.

Final Party List:

  • Aureum Ophir, a damaya lashunta scholar xenoarchaeologist operative with the thief specialization who would make a decent starship engineer or science officer, played by rutaskadis.
  • Orodolwa, a vesk mercenary technomancer who would make a fair starship engineer or science officer, played by CaptainFord.

Congrats everyone, have fun
