"The lords of rust murdered the previous commander and installed a puppet loyal to them. They answer to Hellion, who endangered our unnamed home. This person, cannibal or not, is guilty by association. I will not expect you to personally do anything you may regret, but we WILL need to take out those who answer to Hellion before we have a chance to strike at him directly. We hunt this man to further our goals. It simply happens to align with hers. Instead of fighting through a whole lot of people who will block our way to the lords of rust, we take out one person and make the remainder shift allegiance away from them. Or would you prefer killing all of them in retaliation after they strike first?"

Erastil is about reputation, honesty, trustworthyness in his paladin code. In fact, if danger threatens your community, you are supposed to quell it. Redemption is not in the portfolio. I understand you are opposed to cold-blooded murder, but you are free to assume SOME measure of guilt going in - if he doesn't ping on detect evil, you can still call for an alternative approach. I like that Keldor is insecure, but I think you are unnecessarily strict with his operational range, there. Maybe we should budget for a phylactery of faithfulness so he can have some ease of mind until GM reigns it in?

I guess I would rather over-play his new Paladin side than underplay it and force the GM to censure me. Role-playing habit really. Redemption is not exclusive to any god either. Most (maybe not all) gods of good admire redemption I think, even if it is not part of their portfolio.

Frowning at the woman, Keldor reacts defensively.

"I'm no Crusader. I may be an ASS, but I'm not a 100% DICK."

He nods.

"You both make good points, but it still smacks of a self-deceptive way to get around my problem. Let's find and talk to the man? Maybe an answer will present itself, and I will have little to worry about. But take note...we have proof of NOTHING. He may just be a simple puppet of this Hellion, much like the previous worshiper we stopped."

I am not going to be hard nosed about alignment for Paladins.. As much as the rules for them are written, I tend to think you should fall somewhere inside the Diety's alignment spectrum. That being said, I appreciate the inner turmoil. I will work with it. Just as long as everyone is having fun

At the comment about being an ass she chuckles to herself. "Maybe you can get along in here.. hmm"

"Here is the deal.. you are welcome into this city walls. If you do head up north to the Hawk Palace.. And you do remove Birdfood from his post.. Come back, with proof and we can talk. Warning though, outside of this small gate fort, others will attack. Even other Steel Hawks. Most of the ones actually loyal to the original Hawks are here. The others are just Rust plants."

She waves at the door and another member opens it "Have fun.. I await your return." She holds her hand toward the door. "Give him my regards"

Yep. That's GM speak for: 'I warned ya!'

Before entering, Keldor performs his ritual and summons Gauntlet properly.

Turning back to the woman, he comments dryly.

"OK. I may be a little bit of a DICK."

He then slams both of his metallic fists into each other, making sparks, and approaches the door.

"Now we enter."

You are able to bring in your cart into the open area past the gate. Large piles of scrap and strange smells waft from every corner.

You know you need to move forward to the north side. You can't see directly there, but strange holes and cracks in the uneven land are somewhat daunting.

Ury Rume speaks up, "Um.. so I am here now.. Can you either let me take off... Or give my supplies? I am not sure 2 bombs are going to be enough."

You are pretty sure you can bring your cart, but it will be about the same speed as just walking through the hills.

"And she offered a binary choice. Let her go or give her supplies. Reasonable request. If we head into what will likely be trouble, then she'll want to be prepared. While there is inherent danger in trusting you not to turn sides, I am willing to risk that. In your more sober state, you will likely be aware that we could have killed you, and if not us, then someone else would have - heavy addiction is often a final state before one's demise. I don't mean to imply or deny that you owe us, but I feel it is unlikely you will backstab us while aware that ultimately we may be the reason for your continued existance - and you having no reason to align with our enemies."
Basil monologues while gathering her supplise, but only handing them over if either of the others agrees.

Oh, by all means overplay it. Just saying if we turn down obvious plot hooks it just makes the GM's job harder or forces him to improvise heavily(which tends to lead to very slow-moving games in my experience). I am also not saying redemption is off the table, but e.g. Sarenrae actually has that in her tenets, it's important to her. For Iomedae it's an afterthought, and for Erastil and others I figure it's "nice if possible", but not a true requirement. That man is evil and threatens your community? More important to keep your flock save than to try and redeem the evil-doer. Going in and striking him down is perfectly valid. In my eyes a Paladin is a holy warrior, a champion of good. Not a Jedi Consular - negotiations are fine, but they are not obliged to discuss their motivations as long as they act to further the interests of their god and keep to their tenets.

Listening to Basil "Yes, I am very aware that my life was in your hands... Really, it continues to be so. You did rid me of a particularly bad trip. It is one of the worst I have had. I am likely to try it again, and who knows where I will fall, but for now I can either help you at my full capacity, or I would kindly request that you leave me be. As a third... Trinary.. choice. If they agree, I would be willing to stay here at the guard house. I can work on some Alchemical supplies for you. Until both of us decide my debt has been repaid."

"Staying here sounds generally agreeable, but I am loath to accept this choice at this point in time. While I believe you consider yourself genuinely indebted, we only gave you the freedom to act of your own accord after you seemed to be over the worst of your trip. I would like to grant more freedom step by step, not all in one morning. That said, if we do end up aligned with this local group, after our trip, then I'd gladly accept your request to stay around and provide alchemical supplies. For now, you'd best do what you need to do."
Since nobody objected or agreed, I'll hand over the supplies. IC Basil is still afraid she'll pack up and leave the moment they leave her out of their eyes...or worse. So dragging her along is really more of a "take it slow" reasoning rather than wanting an NPC with us for whatever will happen next. OOC that trinary choice is pretty much what I suggested if memory serves so I'll gladly jump on that. Just not 2 hours after we stopped considering her a prisoner :)

As you gather your supplies and head north. The cart is able to be navigated through some of the narrow paths between the giant piles of debris.

As you move into an open area half way through the territory you can hear a crowed of voices. Soon you see a group of 9 Orcs round the corner.

"But maybe we can make a deal if all you want is food." Thawm pulls out some jerky.

I think normally this would be Intimidate for +2, but for orcs that's how Diplomacy works, right?: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

we have month's worth of rations, though I'd like to give 'em jerky first to avoid the small chance that random flavors in food tubes are not to their liking xD

the wagon is 4 squares, and the horse is supposed to be 4 squres as well (unless it is squeezing)
I like the image, btw. But it looks like it might be better suited for a medium or heavy cart, which take up 6 and 8 squares, respectively ^^;

I got off the horse to summon Gauntlet, and he would not have returned to it since he does not have much riding skill, so the last attack would have been at Gauntlet/Keldor unless the horse followed me like a puppy. I'm simply moving a 5ft step to maintain some distance on two of the attackers and help prevent flanking, then attacking the closest Orc that is left next to me. Basil, fire away!

"Now we fight!"

Slam Attack!: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

Man the cart is just a bit confusing.. I thought the horse was that weird large size that is 1x2. Also there is a real horse and a summoned one right? I figured Gauntlet was not using summon boy anymore since he is just walking next to the cart. I will just roll with it. In my mind there is a real horse connected to the cart, which is what the swing was attacking.

Moving Gauntlet 5 feet to the right. Attacking O8.

Gauntlet's swing crashes down on the Orc, who seems to stumble, roar then just continue fighting, even though it should be out.

4 more orcs charge forward. 3 attacking the horse and 1 attacking Gauntlet. The attack vs Gauntlet is just stopped by the summoned armor.

"Well the Horse is dead, might as well take advantage of that"

Bomb vs O5: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23

ah, not riding the horse, huh? Oh well.
Also, yeah I figured we'd keep the real horse on the cart. Didn't expect to get charged by a bunch of orcs xD
I figured the summoned horse would be ridden or follow along, perhaps pulled by the alchemist until start of combat?
Also, horses can squeeze to become 2x1 for sure. Maybe horses pulling carts always count as squeezing because of the harness? xD

She casts Glitterdust (DC 15) to blind the three that aren't next to Keldor. O1, O2, O4

Keldor takes part of the blow on himself to help keep Gauntlet functioning.

I'll Absorb 6 out of the 9 damage. Hitting the weaker one.

"You think your Rage will protect you? You are mistaken!"

Slam Attack!: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Damage(Magic): 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (1, 2) + 4 = 7

The Orcs bare their fangs at you. Spittle flying. Seems like long gone is much reasoning for the original attack. Aggression is all that is left.

2 Orcs move around the side of the cart. One moves to Thawm, and another climbes up slightly into the cart and swings down at Basil. Another slides over a bit and strikes against Gauntlet

O4 Basil: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
O2 Thawm: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
O9 Gauntlet: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

Basil's quick movement around the cart makes that orc miss, Gauntlet's armor holds out. While the Orc attacking Thawm hits.

Ury lobs a bomb over to Gauntlet's attackers "Keldor! We could use some help."

Keldor then attempts a short step to get out of multiple flanking if he can...and maybe leave someone open for Basil to shoot still.

Oh well...I can see where this is going already. One more level I think and I can have iterative attacks finally and much more versatility with Gauntlet's abilities. BTW Basil...feel free to shoot an AOE shot near Keldor/Gauntlet if needed. I can take a minor hit and I think you will do a lot more damage to the enemy for it.

I am fine, with a splash weapon avoiding the -4. Especially since you are just going for the whole area. Including Gauntlet. Might not be ok with the rules, but if you are ok with fully hitting Gauntlet then its fine. Adding back +4 to all your rolls. Gauntlet takes 6 damage.

On the unlikely event the Orc DOES manage to strike Keldor with a Crit Roll, he'll be forced to re-roll via Determination ;) - willing to risk spending a point from that Pool for the sheer awesomeness of just ignoring him as he exhausts himself trying to strike you to the point of dropping dead.
