Dungeon World set in Legend of Zelda

So, hi! If you're here, you are clearly interested in either Zelda, Dungeon World, or Chocolate and Peanut Butter.

Before I lose you, I should explain the system and the premise. The very simple concept is: the player rolls everything. You roll two d6s and add the modifier from one of six stats to determine success. 7-9 nets you a success at a cost, 10+ nets you a success, and in many cases, a 12+ will net you an exceptional success. Anything with a 6 or less means something bad happened... but you learn from your mistake and gain experience!

Still sound good? Awesome! There's more! Dungeonworld is very freeform. Sure, there are a lot of moves you can make (there's a reason to want any given stat!), And ultimately what you can do is down to creativity so long as the action is somewhat mundane! Classes, on the other hand allow you to do some special stuff. Like firing magic missile at the darkness. Making a plea to your god, stabbing something in the face so it can't do anything but question its life choices.

Still interested? Here is a link to the SRD. It'll give you a lot of the information you need!

Now, that's a lot to digest, but I guarantee that any dungeon world player (myself included) will be more than happy to help you figure out what you need to.

So... What about that premise? Spoiler Warning: during the events of Ocarina of Time, the Hero of Time disappears just when the world needs him most. And then it gets worse. This is set a few years after young Link goes missing, and as Sheik is just getting their legs under them. With no hero, they aren't just going to sit around. That's where No Time for Heroes comes in. Lots of Dungeon Crawling, some puzzles, some fighting, maybe helping the people around you out with side quests. Sound familiar? It should, because it follows the same formula of Zelda!

As for the story so far: The other characters met with Sheik, got paid for a job they might do, and then were given the toys they need to collect lost fragments sealed away within dungeons. The group was on their way to Death Mountain when their pet fairy (and Taxi cab) Muse got them into trouble. Then real life happened and a player dropped just as they completed a mini dungeon!

There are only a few house rules, and they're optional (playing as Gorons, Kokiri, and Zora, as well as Gerudo, Hylians and Sheikah!) If you simply want to play as a human (any of the latter three), you can totally do Human Things! But each option I added is almost guaranteed to be a little stronger than normal options, when it comes to Race.

So... What do you need to do? Well, that's the simplest part. You go through the steps of character creation, and pick a class no one else has chosen. As long as you can provide a off, you can play any class you like as long as someone else isn't. Currently, the group consists of a Zora priest and a Hylian bard. Just remember, the world moves at your pace, and action and reaction will be relatively swift! I try to be very responsive, but I will almost always give a day on a near success for someone to try to aid your character!

Still interested? Then just let me know whatever you need to know to get started!

This sounds cool! I've never played Dungeon World, but I'm intrigued by the option. Gerudo fighter or druid, Sheikah thief or wizard. Hmm...

It took a little digging, but I found your Races rules in your other game. You might want to post them here for any prospective applicants.

You said we can play any class that somebody else isn't as long as we provide a 'off'. What's a 'off'?

EDIT: Looking through your old recruitment thread, somebody posted a Google Sheet with links to a lot of different classes. Are those supported?

On a separate note, how does multi-classing work?

An 'off' is autocorrect for 'throw my tablet at a wall'. :) Any pdf will work -or- simply use base classes. I just need to be able to see what you're doing and what you can do later!

Sure thing, when it comes to the information from the original recruitment, it can be found Here. There's another link or two over there for other available classes and the like.

Sorry for any inconvenience caused by thread hopping and the like, but this afternoon is suddenly slammed. I'll get something more consolidated this evening. Feel free to look over gameplay as well, if you want to get a gist of how to play!

Those links that were provided are fine-ish. As you can probably guess, I haven't looked at more than a few. Simply link what you're interested in and I'll look it over, and mention if I see anything I dislike!

Multiclassing is handled via moves within your class. Bard, as an example can multiclass a ton. Meanwhile, druid can only borrow from ranger, normally. I'm a lot looser on multiclassing restrictions, and everyone gets an advanced multiclassing move. Because I like freedom. :)

Sounds amazing, I am new to dungeon world but this is interesting and I love zelda, I think a kokiri ranger would be fun.

Love dungeon world!

Awesome! Welcome aboard to any and all of you!

This isn't the larger post (I was thinking a pair, actually) that will come up later, but I was going to state that I'll likely go as high as seven members if there's interest. I'll also keep anyone else in mind that responds a bit later as replacements, should the need arise (it probably will, given the nature of PbP!).

My Schedule and You:
Most days, I will be available from 9am Central Time to about 10 pm Central Time. That is 7.5 hours ago, and 5.5 hours from now. I might exist outside of those as well. If you mostly post during other hours, then I'll be much slower to respond to you. Sorry!

When players are not being active they are assumed to be 'handling' a situation. Neither creating heroic openings or catastrophic failures for themselves. On occasion things will call such a player into the spotlight, but I try to avoid that. If you stop posting for two weeks without letting me know what's up, you will have given me enough time to go from Denial and Isolation to acceptance, and I'll look for another able body!

Alrighty, so. Here's the basic gist:

Classes:

You can choose from any of the following sources for classes, if you choose from the last source, definitely hit me up before you go about completely building your character.

Base Classes
Grim World Classes
and
The Ginormous Archive

You may not, at this time, be a bard or priest. In addition to this, I do ask that you have an idea for where you want to take the build (it's okay to change it), and to familiarize yourself with your team's abilities. Multiclassing into Ritual with a Wizard in the party will be slightly frowned upon, unless said Wizard is cool with it. I love when players get to shine and have their own thing, you know? :)

Any playbook that you choose gets a free Multiclass Move in the 6-10 range. Just cause.

Races:

Humans, consisting of the Gerudo (you must be female), Sheikah (there can be only one), and the Hylians are the most diverse amongst the races, but the least specialized.
Choose One:

Reputation: Choose one question covered by discern realities. When you Discern realities, succeed or fail, you may ask that question for free.

Eclectic: You may exchange any starting move from your class for any move that you meet the requirements of from another class. Either this move, or the move you gave up becomes an advanced move (2-5) for your class. Treat this as a multiclassing move in all other ways.

Kokiri, essentially being children, are tiny by comparison to the other races. By leaving the forest, you have also essentially given up your immortality. (In fact, you may be surprised you didnt die!) From a narrative standpoint, you can fit into smaller places, and the forest is more friendly to you. You also get a fairy that does one of two things!

Choose One:

Fairy: You gain a companion that grants +1 ongoing to discern realities.

True Friend: When aiding or interfering, treat the number of bonds you have with the person as one higher.

Gorons are huge and heavy, built of sturdier stuff than the other folks. Unlike most Gorons, you can gain sustenance from something besides rocks. From a narrative standpoint, you are immune to extreme heat, and have no need for oxygen... but you sink straight to the bottom of most liquids.

Choose one:

Sturdy: You may ignore the clumsy tag of equipment.

Sustained by Earth: Rather than eating food, you instead may eat rocks and stones, meaning that you do not require rations.

Zora are lithe a swift. They glide through things with practiced ease. From a narrative standpoint, you may breathe water or air, and water doesn't slow you a bit.

Choose One:

Regal: The other races recognize you as the exotic being that you are, as such, your deals seem all the more tempting. You gain +1 ongoing to Parley.

Platinum Scales: Your scales carry an aura of magic that extends to all who touch you, should you will it. You may share your amphibious traits with anyone besides a goron.

If you're still with me, I'll take 4 or 5 players from this recruitment (or less if there just aren't enough people). It'll be as a first come first serve basis (with the caveat that I can say 'no' :p), as I've found that that really works well for dungeon world and my philosophies as a whole.

You may set up your profile page in any way you like, but I ask that you provide a link to the class you're using in your header, and suggest that you list your attributes' modifiers in the header as well, so you can reach it quickly!

Finally, I highly suggest you put an XP Log in your profile, so you can list every time you fail on a check. It'll help you keep track of how much XP you have. :)

Any questions? :)

This is The Dread Pirate Hurley's submission, a Gerudo Fighter. Nabooru convinced her to turn against Ganondorf; when she was captured, Riza fled the Gerudo Fortress.

I think I got everything put together alright. I do have two questions, though.

First, is it alright that I swap out Fighter's Armored move for Barbarian's Unencumbered, Unharmed move? Armor doesn't really fit for Gerudo.

Second, I'm a little confused about what you mean when you say that any playbook we choose will get a free Multiclass Move in the 6-10 range. Does that mean we add a move to our starting moves, or does that not come into effect until levels 6-10?

In your playbooks, you have things to choose at level 1, things to choose from 2-5, and then things to choose from 6-10. Everyone gets 'Heroic Dabbling' in the 6-10 portion of their level up choices, which allows anyone to multiclass. :) I thought about doing it sooner, but it stole the human's and certain class's thunder.

Unencumbered Unharmed is fine. Just remember that gear is going to be a big deal in this. I might be able to swing some normal and magical clothing anyway. :)

Otherwise, looks great!

Giving this a Monday morning bump for you guys that don't do weekends :) Hopefully my table can fill back out again!

Working on a kokiri ranger right now.

Just posting to show my support! Didn't notice this thread at first, Hot DM, but I'm raring to continue!

I'm a Zora, a diplomat of my people to the Hylians. My class is Priest - similar to the Cleric class but more flexible.

Just finished this Hylian Templar.I figure the disappearance of the Hero of Time would make people desperate, even in a place as setting like Hyrule. He's very much a go-out-and-make-the-world-a-better-place sort.

As with Riza, I'll forewarn you when specific options won't see much use (unless you press them!) or will have other detrimental qualities.

Inquisitor will not see much use unless the group looks to make things more social; this isn't especially a bad thing. If the players want social, they'll get social! Legend of Zelda just doesn't innately have a lot of villainous intelligent creatures. Most just get wrapped up in what's going on, or are cowardly. Keeping that in mind, you're also good. :)

Once I've okayed your character, feel free to dot the Gameplay Tab. While I finish up the mini-dungeon and have the Sheikah disappear to do something she feels is more important, I'll be free to run your meetings with Sheik. :)

this does sound awesome.
I don't have time to get into Dungeon World right now, though. But I really hope this works out, and wish you best of luck!

Thank you very much. :)

Silverseabird's character submission. Full backstory pending, I have limited time at the moment due to exams.

Currently at work so I can't put all my effort right this momment to examine everything.
But I am very interested in joining a Zelda campaign like this.
Tonight when I get home I will deffinatly look over the SRD and give you a character idea :)

EDIT: thinking of making Sheikah, Thief or Wizard (or possibly one of the other classes presented, but my work browser won't load the PDF.)

@Remia: Approved. Also, if you ever fail a discern realities, I'm going to have to make something utterly awful happen! XD

I'll get a post up for you in gameplay soonish. Look for it this evening, and feel free to dot at your leisure.

Sheikah will be fine, and should our dust eater return, it may be pretty interesting to see how you play off of one another. :) I'll be eagerly awaiting what you can come up with!

Alright count me interested. Never used Dungeon World before but I am willing to try.

My Idea is actually for a Goron Druid. Possibly focused on expanding to talking and shapeshifting to the elements themselves. Primary fire and earth of course.

Mmhmm. I can totally see that working. :) If you need any help, just let me know! (Also, hi Nia!)

hey Hot, how much longer are you planning on keeping this open?

2 other recruitments in which I had applied ended, and my work load will be less in the coming week, so I may be able to whip something up after all, and get familiar with dungeon world.

Would love to join with a Kokiri Bard.

Bard is actually already in someone else's hands! So you can't really do that one.

Currently I have five characters, 'going', and only intend to get as high as seven... though I might squeeze one more in if everyone here is interested. It'll make things a bit more clunky, though.

On the bright side, Dungeon World also has a reasonable turnover rate, so I'll always be looking for a steady stream of players. :)

HI!!!!

Heh, Okay here is my Try At building. Tell me if I missed something

Goron Druid:

Class: Druid
Race: Goron
Name: Hycorerox
Look:Wise Eyes, Furry Hood, Weathered Leathers
Stats:
13--Str +1
12--Dex +0
15--Con+1
9 --Int +0
16--Wis +2
8 --Cha -1
HP:21
Base Damage:1d6
Starting Move
-Sturdy: You may ignore the clumsy tag of equipment.
-Born of the Soil-Towering Mountains -- Tell Craggy rock protrusions that glow slightly as if there was magma underneath. AWESOME ARTIST Goron Picture
-By Nature Sustained
-Spirit Tongue
-Shapeshifter
-Studied Essense
Alignment: Good
Gear: Load:19
-Token of Land: Red Obsidian Shard that has been chipped down to a long Dagger
-Shield
-Shillelagh --shillelagh is an unusual size, granting +1 damage, but also the clumsy tag (which you ignore)
-Adventuring Gear

Looks like you accidentally rearranged Int down to a 9 and forgot to swap away the +1 for a +0. :)

Otherwise, looks like you're ready to go!

Also, in the mean time, it seems reasonable to give you something minor for being sturdy. How does it sound for your shillelagh to be of unusual size, granting +1 damage, but also the clumsy tag (which you ignore)?

Pathfinder Pathfinder Accessories Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

Sounds great to me actually. Fixed spelling and grammatical errors too. Sometime I hate autocorrect. Added Note to Shillelagh.

Head on over at your leisure, then. :)
