He was undone by his great servant and understudy; a six fingered fiend of some modest promise named Graz'zt........rumored to not exactly be 100% Tanar'ri stock; some say this one's sire was Asmodeus, while others say that some tentacled thing from the beyond the Sea of Stars would be his father.
Graz'zt obtained lordship of his first of three abyssal realms from defeating Avalzant; in doing so had his flesh blasted to his current swarthy mien.
What became of Avalzant, the Lord of Heathen Fields, is unknown.
This happened, during the time of that final battle that saw the Demon Queen of Chaos undone.
Emrael intrudes into the green halo around the statue.
It's warmer than the dark abyssal shadow she came out of.
She feels the hairs at the nape of her neck prickle.
She feels that she is being watched.

The statue seems to be.
In its gloomy eyes, the promise of ancient pagan landscapes linger. The joys, the horrors, blood pounding and blood spraying.
Tragedy, that word has its roots in "goat song,....." for in the ancient times the goat was the tragic hero of an old storyform.
Avalzant's tragedy, ironic, at the six fingered hand of Graz'zt.

Satari makes no response to Emrael's gentle query. The green light casts his kindly face in a cruel light; he looks like a wax-carved skull. His eyes are locked on the unnatural visage of the statue and his breathing has slowed to an imperceptible rise and fall.
He can hear a voice in his head.
"Free me,.....or destroy me,.....I beg of you."
Elganfish seems unnerved by the sight of the statue. He swims agitatedly around the others, and tries to dart in front of any who seem determined to get too close.
Elgan knows better than to mess with creepy, alien, otherworldly statues! That won't make him stop his friends from doing so if they insist on it however. He does believe in 'survival of the fittest' after all.
And his friends have consistently proven themselves to be very fit, indeed. :)
Elgan remembers back; ancestral memories; primal elves more akin to wolves than men; shapeshifting; stalking the stepps.

Emrael, and anyone else near enough, can see Satari mouthing words silently, over and over again. His eyes reflect the green light of the statue. His voice is silent.

This is most assuredly out of Elgan's realm of expertise. Although by now he is certainly more learned about such things than anyone in his homeland!

Pip, sensing a situation brewing, decides discretion is the better part of valor. He reaches into a pouch and tosses several broken wood bits into the water and points upward

The group winks up, and is again in dark waters, about 1/3 the way back up to the surface. Claw starts to sink again.
He's not the best swimmer.
Elgan fish flips his fins and glides under Claw. Where he shimmers into a huge, almost invisible form. He is water itself, an avatar of elemental might. He gathers Claw into his arms and flows towards the surface,...
