Bartan got splattered in cooling brass metal from all three directions. Nasir and Khayal were covered in the liquid metal, Nasir the worse for it (i.e., no fire protection). Hajar stoically took the metal attack, the brass seemingly cooling as soon as it touched his cloak.
Nasir's attacks sliced the (blue) brass man facing her. Yazi ran to the North to help Hajar, and her first two blows rang true. Khayal tore apart the (sepia) construct to the West by himself, the creature losing chunks of its' arms, legs, and torso. Rayhan got out his new rod as he moved behind Bartan.
With the other three constructs defeated, the lone brass man to the North opened its' mouth again, throwing out copper-colored metal at the adventurers.
You take 6d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 3, 1, 4, 1) = 13 fire damage from liquid metal. (Fire protection applies.)
Bartan's playing cards finished off the (blue) brass man to the South, already falling apart from Nasir's blows.
(Hajar)
Rayhan Xohbadi |
HAHA! My earlier action makes sense now!
Rayhan raises the Rod of Extinguishing and the flaming metal cools instantly, becoming inert brass.
When applied to Large or larger magic fires, such as those caused by fireball, flame strike, or wall of fire, extinguishing the flames expends 2 charges from the rod.
So, probably 2 charges

(Yazi, yes, constructs can now be crit'ted in Pathfinder. New rules. We're playing out of a 3.5 book, so I may slip up from time to time.)
Yazi's first attack with her greataxe stops the construct; her subsequent attacks take off limbs.
OUT OF MELEE (assuming Khayal wouldn't charge and do a single attack, watching Yazi instead)
Bartan Harrowborn |
Bartan looks extra-crispy. "That was extremely unpleasant. Master Hajar, could you aid me a bit here?"
Nasir al' Shahaadi |
"Geniekind tend to be VERY protective of their spoils and treasures, Ifreeti more than most." Nasir adds, her skin still a bit red from the liquid brass that managed to touch her. "Poor Bartan."

Hajar heals Bartan. Wand of CLW x4: 4d8 + 4 ⇒ (4, 5, 8, 6) + 4 = 27 and that Wand crumbles to ash as he uses it up.
Hajar then says a prayer to Sarenrae Dear Lady, protect us from the fires of the efreeti.
Khayal, Bartan, Yazi, Nasir and Rayhan have FR 20 for 80 minutes.
We are protected from fire.

In answer to Khayal's question, you remember the runes on the ceiling and the numbers above the archways are in Ignan. Those above the doors are the numerals 1 through 4. The ceiling inscription simply states, “Half or Triple plus One.”
Which means, to travel through the fire archways, always divide by 2 or-
The hairs on the back of your neck go up. Someone is scrying you right now, and it's not a friendly feeling like Venema Shodair.
For a brief instant, instead of the usual reflections in the brass walls you see a wild-eyed Garundi man with long white hair staring at all of you. The apparition disappears so quickly you almost think you imagined it.
Your sword arm itches as Vardishal speaks in your mind. The wizard's logic is correct. the ancient genie says. I recognize the signs of the City of Brass. This must be Jhavhul's old palace - before he began his war of attrition to collect mortals to mouth his wishes. You can learn much here, young Templar, more than Jhavhul's House of the Beast or his days in Kakishon. And it will forge you as you battle Jhavhul's forgotten soldiers and former allies here. But do not forget Jhavhul's wishes are counting down.

"Thank you, Master Hajar. Hopefully we can avoid such unnecessary attacks in the future." Bartan looks sidelong at Khayal, but says nothing else.
Khayal Bin Haleen |
A little annoyed at his friends lack of understanding of his actions, There is nothing to say that Shirin will make it through all this. And I just found out that it takes powered diamonds to bring people back to life. If that’s what it takes, I intend to pick up every precious stone I can find. Both for her and for any of you.
Nasir al' Shahaadi |
Yazi nods. ”Does anyone have any ointment they’d like me to rub in?”
Nasir grins. "Have you ever known me to turn down an offer like that?" she asks with a sly grin.
"We understand Khayal, just...a little forethought or preparation next time perhaps." she says in a mollifying tone. "One way or another, we will get you back to her."
Yazi |
Yazi smiles at Nasir, though the smile slightly fades when she realizes the Dancer doesn’t have any ointment at the moment. Turning to Khayal she nods. ”If we get killed all our wealth will mean nothing. Let’s focus on saving Shiraz, and deal with the worst possible outcome if and when it comes to that. Nothing good will come by acting like a your average Katapeshi consumed by the thought of coins and gems, especially when the coins and gems are not your’s to begin with.”
Khayal Bin Haleen |
They are not ours to begin with. They are our enemy’s and attriting his wealth is a valid tactic. But your thoughts make sense. If we all die we are of little use. Khayal looks over at Bartan. You have a mind for these things, do your divinations reveal any way out?
Hajar nar Jundi |
That's my que I guess.
Hajar says Indeed. This is Jhavhul's Vault. We will learn much here about our Enemy. Fate conspires to keep us from Kelmerane, and our family.
Rayhan Xohbadi |
Say nothing! Rayhan snaps
We are being watched. Rayhan says as he watches above...he makes a rude gesture in the air.
Rayhan huddles with his allies and says The inscriptions say “Half or Triple plus One.”. And the portals are numbered 1 through 4.

A small feline head poked out of the side top of Yazi's backpack, Spooky sniffing the air and looking around. Yazi will notice that a heavy chain with a platinum medallion is wrapped around the cat's neck and back, along with a pigeon-sized parchment scroll around the chain.
Dear, don't forget Andrathi's cat! Doubtless his genie princess would want to know the fate of her human lover. Andrathi would reminisce for hours about her before Jhavhul arrived.
Hajar nar Jundi |
Hajar's player has no idea which way to go.... Rayhan might. But I personally, do not.
Bartan Harrowborn |
Sighing, Bartan randomly pulls out and tosses four cards to the floor, pointing in each of the directions that the group could take. He gives each card a spin by flicking his wrist as it flies out of his hand, so that each continues to spin even after it hits the floor. "This isn't as precise as a full reading, but Lady Irez is sure to give me at least a bit of insight, I think."

West(4): 1d54 ⇒ 28 28: The Hidden Truth (Lawful Good, Intelligence) facing, 1=N: 1d4 ⇒ 2 East
"To the North, I sense chaos and misfortune brought about by an enchanting but fatal creature or effect.
To the East, a strange and unruly object that could bring us misfortune.
To the South, the remnants of a storm of danger, but that danger has probably passed, and we may find a renewed spirit there.
Finally, to the West, We likely will find some strange and wondrous truth, which it seems will inevitably lead to our downfall."
"Given Lady Irez's indications, I suggest we go South."
Pulled this new reading style totally out of my a$$, but it seems legit, right? All but one of the directions has the card pointing in the opposite direction of the tunnel, which is pretty interesting. :-D
Rayhan Xohbadi |
Rayhan shrugs. Sure. he says but you notice he doesn't leave first. He waits for Hajar

Hajar shrugs also, and he heads south...Tempest at the ready.

You realize that there’s a mathematical clue hidden in the numbers, and that one of the key parts of discovering that clue must be that only even numbers can be halved into whole numbers, indicating that odd numbers must be multiplied by 3 and then increased by 1.
Which means, to travel through the fire archways, always divide by 2 or add 1 to 3. 3 is bad.
1 = cannot divide by 2
2 = good
3 = cannot divide by 2 and must add 1 to in order to get 4
4 = good
1 * 3 = 3, 3 + 1 = 4.
4 = best
2 = second best
1 = third best
3 is bad.
The solution indicates the repeating order of 4–2–1 and the exclusion of the number 3.

Yazi begins to gently scritch behind the kitty's ear while removing the chain and note. Thank you, Venema! "Oh! Well looks like we have a destination for you, Spooky. We need to find your mama." Yazi asks the cat before turning to Rayhan. "The woman in charge of the Four Winds, who had Andy as a lover, what was her name?"

Rayhan suddenly has an epiphany Thanks to the GM and shouts Wait Hajar stop!

It's a puzzle. The ignan script is ancient and I didn't recognize several clues at first. Go that way. Rayhan points to the west.
Hajar nar Jundi |
Hajar, who was mere feet from the southern portal, looks trepidatious.
So, what would have happened had we stepped through?
But Hajar holds up a hand before Rayhan can answer
Nevermind. This way. and Hajar heads through the western portal.
Yazi |
Yazi nods to Hajar and then looks to Spooky. "Don't worry, we'll get you back to Nefeshti."
"Ooo, I like puzzles!" Yazi says excitedly as she follows after the paladin and wizard.

You emerge in a large, high-ceiling room nearly identical to the first. The walls are made of shining brass, with arched passageways obscured by curtains of orange fire in the center of each wall. At the top of the arches runes are inscribed, each different from the others. An oppressive heat covers the room like a blanket, something more than what could be provided by the four curtains of flame. A jumble of open chests, overturned amphorae, and and scattered mounds of coins and gems lie scattered on the floor against the walls. An intricate series of symbols in florid script are inscribed along the domed ceiling above in runes similar to those that mark the arches, under which is a stylized rune that resembles an animal.
A brass lamp standing three feet high sits in the middle of this room. A large ruby has been cemented in place over its lid and traces of lead can be seen around its spout. A circle of runes has been precisely etched into the brass floor around the lamp.
Through the fire of the archway opposite, you can see Bartan, Khayal, and Nasir in the room to the West. (See Encounter Map.)
The creature inscribed on the ceiling here is a dragon, not a small lizard. The inscription is different as well, as it reads "Go in circles never stopping, or know the animal therein while in the fire."
Peering closer, you realize the other symbols on the ceiling are more animals. In rough order, they are:
Vulture Scorpion Salamander
Lizard Dragon
Jackal Snake
Phoenix
-------------------------
The circle of runes around the lamp read "The former resting place of the last pasha of Bayt al-Bazan, honor to his name."
Pasha is an efreeti title much like grandfather, meaning a member of the Sultan's Court.
Nasir al' Shahaadi |
Following Yazi into the room, Nasir gasps in awe at the sights before her. Swiftly taking out her leather-bound sketchbook, the Pathfinder begins to sketch everything she sees, taking special note of the script and depictions of creatures.
