Golarion Galaxies
In the distant galaxy of Golarion, wars are fought, magic reigns, and expeditions are launched. Kingdoms rise ad fall, the reach of tyrants stretches across planets, and noble souls fight across the rims. Smugglers and pirates dodge patrols in their FTL spacecraft as dog-fights flash across the air in brilliant colors.
You've probably seen these tropes before, but that's the point. This is a Space Opera, and it isn't trying to be anything other than that. Pure Pathfinder fun where the nations and cities are planets and moons, the races are aliens, the scope is larger, and the magic still intact. This odd galaxy needs saving, and it'll take a team and their trusty ship to do so.
-Start at Level 2
-25 point ability buy
-Any 1st Party class and archetype. 3rd party classes and archetypes will be considered if sent links/explanations.
-Any Race. Monsters will be considered if total CR adds up to 2.
-Will consider Races from the Race-builder. Appreciates things that take advantage of the setting, (droids, LGMs, etc..)
-Max HP 1st level, roll on discussion thread every level after. Reroll 1s.
-May choose from +1 hit point, +1 skill point, and your racial favored class bonuses.
-Uses anti-hero class option as detailed in the Advanced player guide. Bonus feat at 1st level instead of hero points.
-Max starting gold for your class x2
-2 Traits (must match background).
-May take drawback for extra trait or Major Drawback for extra feat.
-Uses Background Skills as detailed in Pathfinder Unchained.
-Bonus Feat; Weapon Proficiency (Firearms), representing the ubiquity of 'blasters' (read; reskinned firearms), unless you personally feel your character would have no reason to need such a feat.
-Must be a consummate roleplayer.
-Detailed character background, motivation, personality, etc.
-Feel free to world-build with your character.
-Be sure to throw in a few 'hooks' with your character description. Little things that I can take and use for the story, and against you :)
-Feel free to add your own planet in your backstory. There are certainly more planets then there are Golarion nations.
-Looking for about 6-8 members for our "Crew."
-On a minor note, I adore character quirks that I haven't seen used on a character yet. Go wild. We're gonna be a weird bunch.
-Swords are still a very popular option due to the presence of magic and enchantments.
-The new skills needed in this world will be handled with preexisting skills. (i.e Profession (Pilot), Profession (Mechanic), Craft (Technology), etc..)
-On top of that, technology feats from the Pathfinder Technology Guide may be used (and may be found on d20pfsrd.com) to interact with the tech in this world in any special way that is require. Due to the prevalence of technology in this world, I might be convinced to waive certain perquisites for such feats.
-All firearms can be assumed to be fairly technologically advanced, but to preserve whatever balance these types of weapons leave us with, the damage does not change, and neither do the mechanics. The tech come from the next on this list.
-Within reason, enhancement bonuses on weapons and armor can be taken as either magic, or tech. (instead of a flaming sword, it could be an internally heated plasma blade, for example). This leaves it immune to anti-magic effects, but susceptible to short-circuiting on rolls of natural ones and other special occasions, and likewise, doesn't surpass magic-susceptible DR.
-To avoid those instances where some poor Gm's (me) head explodes, space combat will be handled abstractly, possibly just boiling down to Profession (pilot), Base attack bonus+Dexterity, and Mechanics to repair damage or hold the ship together after a blast.
There ya go. Feel free to PM me if ya need to.
I expect this thread to go on for a week or two, And I'm expecting a crew of about 8, as I love a good load of characters, and I've developed strategies for dealing with large groups.
Am looking forward to your characters :)
Tik'Klik |
Hmm, Tik'Klik might work as a golem/droid. How are you handling droids and equipment? I much prefer that equipment end up merged into Tik'Klik's body. I especially like playing him as what is supposed to be an antiquated droid someone finds in a musty dusty packing crate, and finds out he was anything other than ordinary, just never activated.
Tik'Klik |
If you look at his back story, it would work for an old 'Golem' type droid, basically, very early model that was more magic than tech, so most people would consider it 'useless' as anything but an antique, and then consider it 'worthless' as an antique once it did things it shouldn't be capable of (about like taking a 1920's tv and throwing out the insides to make it a high def, neither an antique nor a good high def). :)
Jaster Kite |
Michelle-
Nope, haven't played it, I'm afraid. I've been a console gamer most of my life. I a little confused on Terra Priman, and the Scientist aspect of your submission. Care to explain it?
Tik'Klik-
Actually, I am. Not terribly familiar, but I know of the work.
IronGiant-
Would love to collaborate with you on your character.
Jubal-
A class published by Paizo. Anything you'd find in the official publications.
I'm actually including Background skills, if you would read the above. Loved the mechanic since it was published.
Michelle Williams |
Oh, Michelle isn't the concept. She is an alias from a game long ago. Let me describe my concept. It is not optimized for combat, more for flavor:
I'm looking to make a not-alchemist. My character would combine the Internal Alchemist, Mindchemist, and Vivisectionist in an effort to create a piece of living history.
Note the breath mastery ability of the Internal Alchemist. My protagonist would use that to "sleep" for long periods of time. Though travel among the stars may be common now, he would have experienced pieces of the progress of humanity over the millenia. This would give him a unique philosophy on society, science, and humanity.
As such, he is less inclined towards explosions and more inclined to seeing where the boundaries of humanity lie, particularly with the advent of new technology. This underscores the choice of vivisectionist and mindchemist, examining the mental and physical nature of people.
In the campaign, he would fulfill the mechanical roll of utility and skill support while being a voice of the past, in a way.
Loup Blanc |
Ooh, I'm intrigued. Enjoying the other game I'm in with you, Jaster, and I'd love to see something space-y. Definitely gonna think of a good concept and let you know.
Off the top of my head, would the popular 3rd-party options from Dreamscarred Press be allowed, specifically psionics and the Path of War stuff? Both could be used for some interesting and iconic concepts, I think.
Arachnofiend |
This sounds like it could be a lot of fun; I'm guessing this isn't intended to be a terribly serious campaign and there will be plenty of room for comedic fluff? I'm thinking of a melee-focused bard with more eagerness than good sense and who's knowledge of space piracy comes primarily from zany action movies.
I'm curious if you have any house rules in place to make guns more viable for general use? RAW Pathfinder they're pretty terrible for anyone that doesn't have the Gunslinger's abilities, so if you want them to be common in usage some house ruling might be in order.
HighonHolyWater |
This sounds heaps fun and I would like to put forward the idea of playing a dragon. More specifically the third party race Taninim and it's racial classDraconic Exemplar. They start small sized but increase in size one category every 4 levels.
I have never played it before but it seems like a lot of fun. The egg was stolen and he currently does not know much about his homeworld, such would be a personal quest of sorts and I picture him as a friendly mischevious dragon that just really wants to eat everything and anything(including enemies that try to hurt him), fueling his growth.

Look at Tik'Klik throwing out an Isaac Asimov reference, nice! I hope you get to talk a little in this one!
Hey GM, you covered blasters, how about light sabers, I'm sorry, energy-swords?
Peet |
Interested. Let's see if I can come up with something.
Let me pick your brain a bit for background though.
I gather from your earlier statements that the party will all be crew on a particular "starship."
* Were the players hired on as crew by a 3rd party? Will they be in command of the ship? Are there NPCs aboard or is it just the players?
* Do the players own the ship, or does a member of the party own it? Or is it owned by some agency the players work for?
* Is this game going to have an over-arching plot or more sandbox?
Right now I have two ideas for a character.
Kenrar Tane, a charming, brash scoundrel. Pistolero archetype (a sci-fi themed game is one of the few that I would play a gunslinger) but of a custom leonine race known as the Ashlar - similar to catfolk. Think Han Solo or Mal Reynolds but with big teeth.
Chixqulub, a strange crustacean-like alien being who can survive for significant periods in a vacuum and is used to zero-gravity. Chixqulub is good with machines and is something of a philosopher. Not sure what class yet... maybe investigator.
thunderbeard |
Hmm. Major Drawbacks are 3pp—is that a standalone bit?
Also, what pace were you anticipating for the game?
I played a Ghoran monk in a previous space game, that could be fun (maybe go monk/ninja as a low-G martial arts expert, with the mana wastes of his birth as some sort of massive debris field/asteroid belt). Or something with a fly speed and a bow to be a pseudo fighter-pilot.

Hi there! =D
@Peet: Do you think this ship is big enough for two gunslingers? (I was thinking Mysterious Stranger. =)
@Jaster Kite: For the abstract Space combat, what do you think about stealing blantently from the game FTL? It'd be pretty simple: In combat, everyone in the party grabs a station (Pilot, Shields, Engines, various stations of different weapons, damage control, repel boarders) and everyone gets to make a roll for Skill: (Station). Tally up the numbers and see how it goes. (That way everyone gets to contribute, and it's not just the pilot rolling. ^_^ Just a thought. Do with it as you may. =-)

Michele-
Got to admit, a little impressed that you were able to find three archetypes that didn't conflict with each other, and it's definitely a well thought-out character.
Loup Blanc-
Glad to see you make it, Jingles :)
I'd always consider it, if you sent me the D20PFSRD link.
ArachnoFiend-
I never create a terribly serious campaign. Even the darkest stuff I ever did was laced with grim humor (Ala Watchmen).
Any ideas yourself how to rectify tha? I'm thinking on it now, but as of the moment, I left guns the same to still make melee weapons a viable option.
HighOnHolyWater-
"We're gonna need a bigger boat."
Cool idea. Like the fluff and crunch, but I'm curious to how much RP that would add up to... or how you'll fit into the freighter at higher levels.
Taicho Blackfeather-
This talk of lightsabers are making me excited for VII. :)
Consider it the technological version of, for instance, flaming, frost, and electric weapons. Not exactly lightsabers (I'm sure there's a template for that that more fits the mold we're looking for, I just haven't thought of it yet) but they are literally 'energy-weapons'.
Peet-
Pick away.
*There's a captain that's hire you. He doesn't pilot the ship. You do. I'm also planning on you as a crew being able to recruit other members for within the ship, ala Mass Effect.
*Defer to above.
*Both. You may pilot all over the galaxy and face vast challenges all over (Ala Star Trek) but there will still be a plot woven into the mass exploration (consider if the Skyrim main story followed you every other adventure). All in all, I'm planning this to be an episodic adventure that really utilizes the setting and bestiaries.
*Like both of the characters, but for the moment I'm kind of leaning towards Chixqulub. I like crustacion aliens.
Thunderbeard-
All 3rd party materials will at least be featured, but honestly, I simply like how some of those Major Drawbacks allow a GM to torture players :)
Pace? I'll assume that means posting pace. I usually post as soon as the players leave me an opening, and I also enjoy letting the characters dialogue. All in all, usually frequently, provided the players are as well.
We're getting an awful lot of pilot submissions insofar. I guess you gotta take shifts at some point.
Ch'Rdili-
Glad to see you make your character. I'll get to work on looking over it right away.

Hi! :)
Sounds like what I had in mind, but more streamlined. I'll definitely do my research on that.

@Peet: Do you think this ship is big enough for two gunslingers? (I was thinking Mysterious Stranger. =)
I was kinda leaning that way too... I'm not a huge fan of how Mysterious stranger loses Nimble, but yeah...
However, depending on build and playing style two gunslingers would probably be fine. After all, everyone is going to have guns.
Actually, since everyone gets firearm training and probably doesn't need gunsmith in a game like this, there are probably plenty of powerful builds that use guns well but don't need to be gunslingers. Slayer would probably work real well.
If there was an unchained rogue archetype that incorporated guns that would probably work well.
Peet-

OK, I don't know anything about Mass Effect or Skyrim (aside from that one is sci-fi and the other is fantasy), so that doesn't help me that much.
But you have answered a bunch of things. So I guess the questions are:
* Will the ship be a part of some greater agency (such as the Imperial Navy or Starfleet or something like that) or will the ship be "independent" and the captain is the owner?
* What type of function does the ship have? Is it primarily a Military vessel? Scientific? Mercantile? Prospecting? Pirate? This will have a big impact on the theme of the game.
I assume that if space combat is going to be abstracted, then the main combats will be personal.

I don't know anything about FTL but I do like the idea of a system that has a similar philosophy as the kingdom building rules, in that it is designed to give everyone a role, and even assumes that many roles will have to be run by NPCs.
Depending on the size of the ship there's lots of things that could be done. Like pilots, gunners, sensor operators, stealth/ECM operators, engineers, marines, and so forth.

RE: Firearms, removing the misfire chance would bring firearms up to "decent backup weapon" level at the very least. For me the issue is that even then (as a Bard) I would certainly be bringing a shortbow rather than a gun as my backup ranged weapon, which doesn't feel thematically appropriate. I doubt you'd have any problems if you just changed firearms to work the way bows do in traditional Pathfinder rules (reload time is abstracted, hit regular AC rather than touch).
Loup Blanc |
Woo-hoo! Not sure on exactly what my concept is yet, but definitely thinking something Jedi-ish. Er, I mean, just a sword-slinging space wizard. Definitely nothing specific...
Psionics can be found here, although at the moment at least I'm mainly looking at the Soulknife. The whole "summoning a weapon with your mind" thing easily reflavors into activating an energy sword of some kind, or something akin to that. Although whether I stick with it or not, I'm not ultimately sure. My other thought at the moment is to do a Path of War Warlord, so I'll have to decide what to stick with.
Since I'm doing links anyway, here's the page on Major Drawbacks. Interesting stuff there.
And finally, re:Just reflavoring bows/crossbows as guns, or making guns work on their rules, if we want to keep up with the whole "nobody wears armor thing," we could incorporate the Defense Bonus variant rules. They're intended for more modern games where folks aren't wearing armor as often. Of course, we could mix them with armor, or use some form of Armor as DR to offer choices... All just thoughts from my end.
Loup Blanc |
Another question: Can we please use Deadly Agility for getting Dexterity to Damage, rather than jumping through the hoops for Slashing Grace/Fencing Grace? It just makes it easier to play a Dexterity-focused melee combatant (which feels fitting in this kind of game).
Jaster Kite |
Peet-
I believe the Unchained Rogue can use all of the Rogue archetypes.
Know anything about Fire Emblem? Am considering about adding a sort of influence/ support system akin to Awakening.
Arachnofiend-
Good point. I'm sure firearms are more reliable here than in typical Golarion.
Redblade-
I'm fine with any good idea you can think of, as long as it's not blatantly op.
Shadow-
How about Slayer? It's a good middle-ground. Has cool archetypes, too.
Loup Blank-
I've always imagined a Jedi as the Magus class for whatever reason. Hadn't thought of your idea before. I like it. And yes, Deadly Agility should work jjust fine.

Are we using the 'Guns everywhere' then?
Guns Everywhere: Guns are commonplace. Early firearms are seen as antiques, and advanced firearms are widespread. Firearms are simple weapons, and early firearms, advanced guns, and their ammunition are bought or crafted for 10% of the cost listed in this chapter. The Gunslinger loses the gunsmith class feature and instead gains the gun training class feature at 1st level.

Not really feeling the idea of changing how armor works; I don't think it's terribly necessary and could muck up more of the assumptions of the system than one might think. I think reflavoring Chain Shirt=Ballistic Vest and whatnot would be pretty sufficient for reworking Pathfinder into a sci-fi setting.
In other news, my character... Hp: 1d8 ⇒ 8 Ooh, nice level 2 HP roll.
Character Sheet
First off, some information on her race: the Pitborn are a reflavoring of a Pitborn Tiefling mechanically.
What the early colonists did not account for was the natives' extraordinary ability to adapt to their new intergalactic reality. The oft-conflicting tribes, upon realizing the threat the offworlders posed, quickly grouped into a cohesive (or cohesive by Abizzan standards at any rate) whole, taking on the colloquial name Pitborn because, as stated by their first Empress, "it makes us sound big and scary". Before humanity knew what was happening the Pitborn had organized into an empire of their own right, fielding a large force of Privateers with strict control of the adamantine mines and little respect for any law not declared by one of their own.
When the rest of the galactic neighborhood realized that the Pitborn could not be controlled, they found them to be surprisingly easy to deal with; the new power valued coin as well as anyone else and was eager to engage in trade (though at a price the original colonists were not terribly pleased with).
Pitborn culture seems incredibly chaotic and capricious to an offworlder, and to the less informed they seem to be perennial backstabbers; to a Pitborn this claim seems completely absurd, as a true Pitborn would never betray someone who did not slight them first. A Pitborn's trust and respect is difficult to gain and easy to lose, but if you have it you can expect them to be unflinchingly loyal. If you lack the time to gain their respect you can buy it on a temporary basis with coin, of course, and Pitborn mercenaries are famously effective, especially on jobs that require less-than-legal avenues.
Razza finally got her chance to get in on the action at the tender age of eighteen, when she was recruited into a crew looking for some fresh blood. Razza's eagerness was not tempered by the menial chores given to her as the newest and youngest member of the crew, as she relished the opportunity to hear outlandish tales of daring exploits firsthand from the people that performed them, knowing that someday soon she would have her own stories to tell.
In time, Razza proved herself to be an effective combatant and was invited on more and more raids. Her crew gained a small degree of infamy from their exploits, and Razza was having the time of her life. This came to an abrupt halt on one fateful day, when an ambush went unexpectedly sour; apparently, the galactic police had been tipped off on who their target was and was waiting for them to show up. A lot of good Pitborn died that day, and despite Razza's best efforts to join them in a violent final gasp she was subdued and cuffed.
To Razza's surprise she only spent a few months in prison. A guard approached her cell one day, clearly intimidated by her despite the Pitborn being bound and muzzled, and announced that she was to spend the rest of her sentence in servitude. Once satisfied that Razza was not going to immediately burst out of her bonds and rip his throat out, the guard pushed her along towards her new owner.
Criminals being taken in as servants was not a novel concept, but Razza did chuckle at how ballsy one would have to be to select a Pitborn pirate for something like that. The identity of her anonymous benefactor was at best at the back of her mind though; now that she knew she would be more or less free to move, Razza's priorities were finding out who had screwed her and her crew and if her captain had survived the raid. If her new owner was going to hold her back from that, then well, they would find out very quickly why nobody takes Pitborn slaves.
Should be about done, I think. I know the specific history of the Trap Finder trait isn't on flavor for Razza's character, but the ability to disable magical traps is since she is a fairly Roguey Bard. If you're not satisfied with that I'll swap it out with something else. Let me know if there is anything else you have questions on, of course.

Hi again!
Ya, if I could just jump off with Tik'Kilk's point, even with Guns Everywhere, a laser pistol which is listed at 10,000 would be 1000gp. That's a fair number, but still much outside a starting character's cash. (i.e. double a fighter's 175gp would put him at 350gp. Hence, we'd all have to start with swords and bows since none of us could afford a laser pistol. And...and certainly not a laser rifle, which is too bad, 'cause rifles are cool. ^_^)
I mean, if that's the plan, by all means tally ho! Jus' sayin'. =)

Shadow-
Okay with me. Bounty hunter archetypes are just too fun to turn down.
Tik'Klik-
Yup. Save for more primitive planets, that is. Accounting for that, most armors (though not all) are semi projectile resistant, and attacking the touch AC. Additionally, there will be more advanced firearms (for much more money) that fire more than the typical 6 rounds.
Ashe-
Being a scholar of the Star Wars EU, I recognize the name Dathomirian. While nothing major, maybe you may just change the name, as this isn't the Star Wars Galaxy. Also, I see the at will spell-like abilities might get a little OP, especially at early levels.
Arachnofiend-
I enjoy the worldbuilding, but you know we're starting at CR2 to account for the fact that you guys aren't just newbs to the whole spacefaring thing.
Oh, and to answer a question asked earlier that I missed, it is a semi-merchantile vessel that the enterpraising captain uses to get odd-jobs done and earn a bit of cash.

I don't think I understand what you mean? Razza is definitely not a newb; she's still young enough to be inexperienced for a pirate but she did spend a year on a pirate crew and knows the ropes.

I have my character sheet done as well, I'll send it over in a bit.
Anyway, Drakes are an evolutionary offshoot of the larger dragons. They evolved alongside the dragons long before the technology for interplanetary travel was possible. Faster Than Light travel was discovered millennia later. Once it was, the feud between the larger (and much more common) dragons and the small, weaker drakes rose incredibly fast. Dragons nearly wiped out the drakes after a few centuries, and the draconic empire had become intergalactic. The remaining drakes had repopulated in the Solar System refered to as MDXXI by the empire, and Moxxi by the inhabitants. Moxxi IV and V are the two habitable planets of this system, but they were polar opposites, both figuratively and literally.
Moxxi IV is a water planet, with small landmasses interconnected by land-bridges. The drakes of this planet had become very aquatic, with those that stayed on land becoming amphibian, as large wetlands dotted the landscape. Moxxi V is a very strange planet, its axis tipped almost perpendicular to its sibling planet. Moxxi V is either always day, or always night. This made the planet behave normally during two seasons, and act incredibly dangerously the other two, with one half baked in sunlight, and the other cloaked in darkness. The drakes of this planet lived underground, in huge cities. Since the planet acted normally half the year, the drakes would leave the darkness and live in villages just above the entrances to the underground. This cycle created a harmony between the inhabitants, a sort of holiday every time they left or reentered the caverns. One large group, however, disliked the sunlight, and refused to leave. Eventually, this group became a separate species altogether, a species of drakes that hid in the darkness, and shied from the sun. Though both planets had access to interplanetary travel, they had not mastered FTL travel. When they did, they quickly reentered the galaxy, with an intense dislike for Dragonkind. Ch'Rdili is one of the small number of drakes, and a part of an even smaller species of shadowy drakes. Though born on the planet, he was raised aboard a ship, and quickly took a liking to it.
A few years later, and Shadow had recieved his first job as a bounty hunter. He could pilot a ship, but his job mainly took place onboard stations or large ships, tracking down and stopping pirates, black market dealers, and other scum. He was a small creature, that many simply called a baby dragon. Many had never seen a drake before, as the race was so incredibly rare, and few believed the genocidal tales.

So I was thinking of a somewhat familiar concept of an insectoid race of fierce warriors, ruled by a hivemind, which expands and devours through the universe. The character I had in mind would be a member of this race, but with a catch: after an invasion gone wrong, his killing squad is wiped out and somehow he managed to barely survive, but now he is cut off from the hive and stuck on an alien world. His sentience and self awareness soon kicks in, making him realize the actions of his race and what it means to be an individual. Alone and confused, he wanders the planet for days, until he stumbles upon an isolated mountain range which is inhabited by a mysterious sect of monks. The monks find him lying near death, and decide to help him, as they do not have prejudice against any race. At this solitary place the insect-like hero is confused about his saviors, and a deep struggle between his old instincts and newfound sentience appears. The monks help him with his crisis, and in time take him under training of their ways of clarity of mind. Moar to follow.
Concept of race:

I believe the Unchained Rogue can use all of the Rogue archetypes.
Sadly, I couldn't find a rogue archetype that was built for firearms. Maybe I'm not looking around enough. But the DEX-to-damage that the unchained rogue gets at level 3 only ever applies to melee. Same with the investigator's studied strike. Have yet to find one that will work at range.
