Oh yeah that could be a problem. (Something like this but even worse?) Hmm.

Random thought - does Gork have to ride?

The animal companion could simply be an companion. Or maybe that 'chosen one' archetype that has a little spirit that helps out?

Or ... What about a chariot? Now that would be an impressive sight! You could simply add extra animals to it until you get the pulling power you need. Even more terrain dependent then a standard mount though, which is tough.

But back to the topic of mounts - there really aren't many starting as large (and even less huge!) animals are there? Basically horses and some of the megafauna. Ouch.

It would start off full-grown at Large size. And a rhino wouldn't be any bigger. Thing is, there aren't any Rhinos in the area (nor mammoths or elephants). The bigggest thing around is probably the aurochs. I think it could be heroic (the yak less so - though love Lessah's picture). It's basically an enormous bull with giant horns. Later on as you level, maybe he could keep growing by Merry's divine grace and become enormous. Or huge, or whatever the next size step is. Riding a pure-white, elephant-sized white bull seems pretty cool to me.

Jup.
That's why I though about the Elephant/Mammoth (starts huge and gets large eventually) plus I guess, it is not a stretch that one of them can carry an Ogre.
I think there are only something like 4 mounts that starts huge.

Does Gork have to ride.
Certainly no, but I really liked the idea of a Mounted Ogre Paladin.
After the thought sprang to my mind, I was like:
"Wow, I guess those three words were NEVER used before together.
Let's make a character around that!"

The thing about a chariot is of course sweet as candy-cotton dipped in swiss chocolate.
But let's be honest, the mounted combat rules of pathfinder are a mess already, no need to make things worse by introducing chariots, eh? #PoorGM

EDIT due to GM beat me:
Well that sounds quite awesome to me too :-)

Skimming the thread and realized I hadn't replied to Arty.

Artemis:
I definitely considered the plausible deniability angle when I was applying for leader, but it's not as immediately important as a subordinate to the leader. Still useful, but less a justification on its own.

I think I'll age Wolfgang up some, have him be a pirate after his recovery for a few years, and then have him caught once more, this time actually captured. From there, he's imprisoned pending execution by hanging, and perhaps at around the same time Surtur is tasked with collecting a group to subjugate Gelkrosh without drawing attention to their affiliation. I could conceivably see Surtur finding Wolfgang potentially useful, perhaps offers him (and maybe even his crew) amnesty in exchange for Wolfgang's service.

You know Surtur better than I, so I'll defer to your discretion. If Wolfgang were captured, he'd serve in exchange for amnesty, but would Surtur choose him? Wolfgang has some useful combat and leadership skills, but I don't know how appealing that would make him for this task, and outside of such a situation, I'm not sure Wolfgang would willingly leave piracy behind to help in landlocked Gelkrosh.

The dragon would certainly give Surtur a lot of leeway in picking his group, so if he wanted to take someone out of her dungeons with him, it could happen.

Again, I just want to reiterate to everyone that I have absolutely no power in who gets picked for this campaign. That being said, I am always happy to help answer pre- game questions and look over ideas, especially since we will be working together!

Rotaretilbo:
I think it's certainly conceivable Surtur would come to you for the campaign. I mean, Surtur's certainly going to be the point man, but he also knows that there are certain social rituals he just does not understand. Someone a little more tactful would be helpful, and you have to have a fair amount of tact in order to keep escaping prison, correct? Plus, if we are going to do this takeover silently, then who knows better to hide under the shadows than a criminal?

Meet Gorks trusty Mount:

*** One fateful day not too soon after Gorks ascencion ***
"Gork, you need a mighty steed."
"Wot?"
"A steed. Uff, ahm... A mount?"
"Wot?"
"Argh, for the sake of … Wheew. A loyal and mighty animal on which you can ride into battle – visible from afar for your followers and enemies alike. A symbol of faith. That's what Paladins do."
"Uhh-Huh. Ogres don' ride. Nothin' 'round can carry us."
"Oh, thats … actually right. Ehem …
We will find one that can carry you. What is the strongest animal you know?"
"Hmmm... Ehhhm.... Öööhh.... Guess dragons' strong?"
".... ....
That is living nearby and is walking on four legs."
"Hrmmmhh, da big ox? Big as a hummie and heavy as us. Gud nommy."
"A cattle? Hmm, maybe. Find the biggest one around."
"Gud idea, Gorks hungy!"
"Not to eat! I told you, you need a mount to be a Paladin."
"Must I ..."
"Yes."
"Mhhkay...."

*** Many (long) days later ***
"Marry look, ters a big un."
"Ahh, yes, a mighty aurochs. And he is white, like no other in the herd – that is a sign. Catch him. But.Do.Not.Kill.Him."
"Mhhkay..."

*** After a very long fight, both giants lie at the ground, too exhausted for another round ***
"Name him."
"Wut? Wy? I want to eat him! Fightin makes Gork hungry..."
"You shall not eat this proud and mighty animal. Name him and I will forge a bind between you, making it your closest and most loyal ally you can imagine … actually, even better than what you can image."
"Mhhkay. Wot name?"
"You must find his name in your soul. Just look at him and name him. Use the first word that comes to your mind..."
"Ham."
"Argh!"

And that's how Gork met his trusty bonded mount: Ham, the mighty white aurochs.

Anything else you need to know Mercy? :-)

@mount - glad that worked out :-)

@input on selection - that might be true, but. I doubt we'd want a self imploding group. So feedback from the glorious leader is of course very valuable!

dotting if the recruitment is still going on, i can work something out after getting a look through these previous posts.

definitely a human, haven't seen many of those yet, probably a fighter archtype of some sort, maybe Myrmidon if it's allowed.

I mean, technically speaking, Mercy did say in the leader recruitment thread that he wanted the chosen leader to help with selection, but my primary concern is just ensuring that it makes sense for the leader's character to want my submitted character in the group, so even if Arty doesn't technically have authority in the selection, ensuring that it makes sense for Surtur to chose Wolfgang helps make my submission more appealing (or I hope so, at least).

Yep, we're still going. As we seem to be slowing down I'll end recruitment this Saturday, July 28th. I'll have the selections up by the end of the following Monday.

All set swordwhale! Zorblag, I'll try and get to reading your submission later today, or tomorrow at the latest - the beginning of this week has been busy for me.

Here is just the backstory at the moment. I definitely will be looking it over extensively for things i can change or reword. but for now this is enough i feel.

backstory:

Law was born in Ottrunval, in a port town with no name, the kind of place people go to be forgotten or left alone. The continents vibrant and cosmopolitan cities and towns nowhere to be seen. this was a fishing village, so it came as no surprise when Law took to the art of sailing as well as he did. As the only kid in town, Law had to occupy himself when he wasn't being taught how to fish and sail...so unsurprisingly he took to being a menace. Pranks were a daily occurrence, things only a child could think of were done all the time.

This was how he lived from his Youth to Teenage year's, sprinkling in a few other interest he accumulates, like dance. But like most stories of greatness, this inevitably ends in tragedy. Because of how remote the village was from any sort of garrison or city, it was quick to fall when pirate's attacked. They pillaged the town for all that it was worth, which wasn't much. Realizing as much, they instead began press-ganging anyone who looked like they could hold a sword. Law was coincidentally the only one still young enough to fight and sail, so he was taken, the only one taken.

He was brought aboard and thrown into the life of a high seas brigand. Though fate had other plan's for this small pirate crew. An even bigger crew of pirate's attacked Law's 1 month later as they were sailing to their next destination of a port city in Arim. They were decimated, ship sunk, and bodies quick to follow. Law narrowly escaped on the only life boat the ship owned, floating aimlessly while unconscious and starving for 2 day's before his boat lands on the bottom of the 3 islands between Golm, Ottrunval, and Liria.

Their the boy is found and taken in by a Elven Hermit named Oro. He was nursed back to health by the woman, who then taught him how to truly survive out in the wild. But Law wanted to get stronger, everything that had happened to him from the pirate raid to now has only been because he has been to weak to stop it himself...

Recklessly he threw himself at the monster's of the island, trying in vain to become strong, but not knowing how to accomplish such a task. After almost dying multiple times and accumulating multiple scars, Oro finally had some pity on the fool. As an Elf, Oro had many years of experience doing many things, Combat was just one of them. For the next 2 year's, Law trains with her, gaining injury abound, until the woman suddenly decides he can't learn any more from her. Still, Law had grown to care deeply for the hermit woman, staying with her for 2 more years. Afterwords, it was easy for her to tell that Law missed the main-land. So she unceremoniously kicked him off the island, but not before handing him her blade.

Armed with a gifted blade and some supplies, Law set's sail on the dingy that brought him here, and makes it to Konacht. Having not seen civilization for 2 years, Law is reasonably overwhelmed. It is here that he hear's whispers of a land ruled by a dragon in the far west. Law's curiosity is piqued, he is assaulted withe sudden urge of wanting to see such a land with his own eye's. Seeing how poor he was however, that want seemed more like a unobtainable dream. Fighting was what he trained to do, so fighting would be what got him there. He joined up with a local underground fighting ring, battling his way up the rankings, it was after he defeated the local champion that things took a turn for the worse yet again.

Law was in the process of collecting his winnings when he was accused of cheating. he strongly denied it, but was surprised to find that someone had smuggled a bloody pair of brass knuckles into his pockets. The proprietor was eager to not have to pay up, so he agreed without any hesitation. Outnumbered by the criminal's heavily, Law was force to flee. Barely escaping, Law decided he could not stay here anymore, so throwing caution to the wind, he steal's docked sail boat from the harbor in the dead of night and sets sail for Golm.

After trekking through the wilderness across the continent, he arrives in the dragons territory...only to see that this place is basically the same as any other. Disheartened and upset that there wasn't anything magical about the territory, he find's the nearest tavern to drown his sorrows in. However before he could even partake in his first drink, the little hamlet he found came under attack by a mated pair of manticore's. At first, Law planned to escape in the chaos and try his luck in the Gelkrosh Region. But the sight of the two magical beast's ripping through the poorly equipped town watch spurs him into action. With the aide of the remaining watch members, Law slay's the two beast, stopping their rampage, though gravely wounded himself.

He wakes up in the care of the local church of Byrine, under the care of it's priestess, a woman named Jura. she expressed her graditude to the man, he risked his life and almost died for a group of people he never previously met. When asked what he planned to do next, Law had no answer, for he really had no clue. Seeing how lost he was, Jura informed him of an offer, he has done a great service for her town and her lady.

---------------------------------------------------------

"Join this towns militia" she say's, smiling serenely down at the wounded and incredulous Law "The people know what you have done, their gratefulness is immense, if you truly have nowhere else to go, why not stay where you are appreciated?"

Law stares up at the priestess in complete bafflement, not expecting such a offer.

"....you, want me to stay here?" he asks for clarification

"my lady has learned of the fact you are a nomad, she seeks to put your unfocused skills to better use" she says, smile on her dark lips, the only part of her face he can see under her cowl.

"urg...Listen lady...you're asking allot of a guy you just met..." Law slowly defends, finding it harder and harder to stay awake, his whole body feels like it was the chew toy for a group of wild dogs.

"I understand that, but do you have anywhere else to go..?" Jura quickly counter's "what is your purpose? What do you live for?"

Law opens his mouth to further deny...but can't bring himself to. His first home is long gone, Oro kicked him off her island, and his long journey here has not given him any of the direction he seeks.
"..."

Jura smiles again as he doesn't answer
"my liege is offering you purpose, I would take it"

Law sighs, mulling over her words for no other reason then to prolong the inevitable.
"....OK...some one has to make sure you all don't die to a Manticore again."[/b] he mutters, opening his yellow eye's to stare at Jura.

The cleric only smiles and wordlessly leaves so he can sleep.

He'll serve the Dragon quite nicely.

Gout Loosepaw

Are the Gnolls are the (6rp) Variety or are they the 2d8 hit dice ones?

Background:

Possible Template: Young Creature
Class - Ranger
Archetype - Skystalker Depending on level and permission of course[/oc]

[ooc]If above is not possible then I will modify the story to make him into a...

Template: Young
Class: Magus
Archetype: Kensai (Either Eldritch Archer or Blackblade if possible)
[/ooc]

As a young Gnoll Gout was captured at a young age and forcibly enslaved. He faced cruel mistreatment but after killing a few of the human guards with his bear claws was left chained and muzzled. However, he found a taste for vengeance against those that wronged him and took every opportunity to exact it when they least expected it. He eventually was sold to be a pit fighter but was later freed by the Broken Chains before ever reaching his owner. When he was freed he wasn't alone, a young Hippogriff Gout had befriended while suffering in bondage was taken along with him.

It took a short time for the Broken Chains to gain his respect, when they removed their chains his attitude changed. They were not his enemy, because Gout was a simple creature at that time, unlearned and barely able to speak a language. But with the help of his liberators, he eventually learned to bond with society. Loosely. Ever the wanderer him and his companion Stormmane roam the woods they call home outside of Gelkrosh City. He reveres the Dragon herself, seeing her as the perfect representation of power incarnate. Something that he longs to be and have.

The duo has the River Wardens and River Basin marked as foes to be dealt with for their slaver aiding activities. The young Gnoll is merciless in his removal of threats especially Human's. He is an able-bodied liberator of runaway slaves, directing them to hidden places the Broken Chain uses once they prove they aren't a spy. Sometimes he is embolden enough to move directly against the Wardens and attempt to free slaves from their camp after they were captured while running away. These raids have often led him to close calls or new scars but he does it so infrequently that they have yet to collar him.

Personality:

Quiet Talking in growls and barks as articulating a language was still rough for him. Though often he watches, listens and gets a grasp on a situation by careful assessment.

Ferocious His time in chains and freedom instilled a courageous spirit in him. One that will only die when he draws his last breath. He aims to fight harder than his foes and defeat those that he sees as an enemy.

Cold His suffering has left his mind unused to giving kindness, warmth, or emotion to others. He knows his duties but he is not empathetic outside of Stormmane and close associates in the Broken chain. To those that can gain his trust they will find an unshakeable ally, willing to die to protect his own.

Appearance:
Gout

Unlike most gnolls, Gout doesn't have the usual browns and golden colors to his fur. Instead, sporting various shades of gray, black and a large white patch on his belly, groin and hip area. His tail and down the center of his back to the base of his neck is all black fur like someone sloppily painted him. Though his eyes are a deep green that glows lightly in the dark.

Well best of luck everyone!

Indeed! Good luck all!

Hi all! I was unexpectedly busy after work today and did not have tie to sit down, re-read all the applications, and make my decisions. The picks will be announced tomorrow instead! Apologies for the delay!

Grand Lodge

Can't wait to see who's selected and get this party started (Anyone notice my pun? I'm sorry, I'll stop)!

No worries, life happens.

There ain't no party like a Surtur party, cause a Surtur party won't quit.

...

Mostly due to various mutagenic stimulants and brutal intimidation.

Mmm, puns. There were none in this post, but I saw what you did there.

-Zorblag R`Lyeh

And here we have it. Surtur's band of miscreants is as follows:

Jhaelwyn
Cuneo Danetha
Histrok
Drekisal

AND Gork (because I just couldn't resist)

Thank you to everybody who showed interest and submitted characters!

For those whom were selected, I'll see you over in the discussion thread.
