GM WhtKnt's Giantslayer: Battle of Bloodmarch Hill (Inactive)

Game Master WhtKnt

Deep in the Mindspin Mountains, a storm giant warlord known as the Storm Tyrant has seized control of a cloud castle and an Orb of Dragonkind, and is gathering an army of giants from across western Avistan—first to bring the orc hordes of Belkzen under his banner, then to conquer the neighboring realms. Heroes defending the human town of Trunau from an orc raid discover that the attack is just a precursor to the Storm Tyrant’s larger plans. Working their way through an abandoned border fort, an ancient giant temple, the tomb of an undead frost giant, and an elite fire giant training facility beneath a dormant volcano, the heroes eventually take the fight to the Storm Tyrant himself inside his flying fortress. Can the giant army be defeated before it can conquer the human lands of the Inner Sea, or will all of Avistan bow down in fealty to the Storm Tyrant?

Appearance:

Hammas is a female half-orc, though the human side isn't very evident. Pig-like tusks, enlarged ears, and strong coloring leave her looking full orc, and a bestial one at that. Flaring nostrils and twitching ears further cement her status as a wild creature, almost a beast herself, in the minds of those who meet her.

To those in the know however; she appears as one of those hunters, man or orc, who travel the rocky wastes of Belkzen alone.

Height: 5'10"
Weight: 208lbs

Personality/background:

Some become trappers because they can't stand civilization, or civilization can't stand them. Some because they are hiding from something. And some because they'd just rather be alone with Gozreh. Hammas falls into the last group, and perhaps, if we're being completely honest, a bit of the first as well. Trunau is about accepting as an area can be, and there are plenty of half-orcs around, but that doesn't mean people don't share a preference for those with white, or at least non-green, skin.

This became more apparent as childhood turned to adolescence. Not that those around her were cruel, but children will play with the girl who can find the ripest berries and men will drink with the hunter who can follow a wounded deer on a moonless night, but suitors don't bring flowers to the girl whose ears swivel or whose tusks threaten to blind those who lean close, and that hurts.

And so, Hammas drifted more into the company of those wild men and women who roam the wild moors and rocky crags. Her talents made it easy. Hunting brought in meat and money, both of which are always needed, in large half-orc families especially, and earned respect from everyone, though no offers to join at the Rose's alter.

Central to Hammas' life is her family. To understand her you have to understand where she came from. As long as her home exists, with loving parents and noisy siblings, all is right with the world. It is the rock that anchors her.

Two half-orcs met and, like what happens to most of us, decided that they rather enjoyed one another's company and enjoyed it enough to not kill each other or the squalling brats when they inevitably came along. More children came, and more children, and some how a few more snuck in, which Hammas' father is firmly, or at least loudly, convinced that someone simply dropped off and forget to return for, surely he wasn't responsible for all of these. To which her mother would loudly reply that yes he was and had he forgotten how it came about. Ah well then, perhaps you could remind me how its done, and soon after another child would sneak, or rather come lustily wailing, into the house to join to a near dozen others.

To the credit to Halgra and the rest of community, most of those children are still alive today. The oldest was killed defending the wall against an attack, one was stolen in raid, and two others died of illness, but that isn't bad for the frontier.

In a crowded, noisy environment like that a middle child has two options for getting by, get louder or be quiet. Hammas went quiet. Since others had first call on attention, she learned how to solve problems herself. When someone was looking for a target to harass, Hammas just wasn't around.

Time in the wilds, with the chance and need for careful consideration that trapping provides, strengthened this tendency. In group conversations, she tends to hold back. Waiting until everyone else has finished. When she does speak, sudden pauses give an odd rhythm to it. This isn't to say that she is shy or retiring. One on one, she can become quite chatty. Willing to listen for hours and share stories about the things she sees. In general though, Hammas is most comfortable expressing her feelings through action, which she doesn't hesitate to do. A firm handshake, a warm hug, or light punch to the arm.

Today Hammas is a respected, if junior, part of the trappers and hunters that make up the town's first line of defense. Her senses have led her choosing/being assigned to a rugged section of the hills to the west. That's what being able to follow a scent over stones that hold no tracks gets you.

In keeping with this, she travels with a somewhat tamed boar named Garm, who is better able navigate the difficult terrain and attracts less attention than a more traditional pack animal. A tusked green-skin with a pig doesn't generate much excitement. A woman with a mule would.

Known Ally:

Sara Morninghawk. As owner of Trunau's smithy, Sara is an critical person to know, and Hammas is just the sort of person Sara likes, competent, honest, and doesn't insist on trying to talk in a loud forge. Sara and Agrit's unusual, but seemingly happy, marriage has led the quiet ranger to start seeking advice on romance.

Unknown Ally:

As it turns out, someone has noticed Hammas, and thinks she's perfect. A young orc by the name of Grishnákh has noticed the hunter that roams outside his tribe's territory. The others may be too dense to notice, but he's investigated some of the camps she's made. That non-descript figure on the hills is female. A strong, healthy, and most importantly, unclaimed female. Grish has taken to voluntarily patrolling that section of hills, which allows him to keep other's in the tribe from finding out, as well as leaving tokens of affection in areas she's likely to visit.

Known Enemy:

The Bone-Fist tribe doesn't often come into conflict with Trunau. The town is just a bit too far to be convenient. That doesn't stop a the occasional group of young males from trying it to gain prestige though. One of these raids caught Hammas' brother Nisk out a little too far from help. The family doesn't know his fate, but hope for death rather than the alternative. One pride of place on Hammas' tusk necklace is set from a warrior from the tribe who thought the humans couldn't find him in the dark.

Unknown Enemy:

Just as Hammas activities in the wild gained her an admirer, they also bought her a bitter enemy. One of the other town hunters by the name of Darien had a found a nice side-line in selling goods and information to the orcs tribes. Once it was decided that Hammas was best suited for the rocky areas, he lost any believable excuse to travel there and his income dwindled. Darien was willing to let it go. His wife, however, was not.

Hooray, I got everything together! This is MaybeNever's submission for consideration. I should be able to post 1-3 times a day throughout the summer and probably 1-2 times after September.

The friends and enemies are written into the history (everything in the alias profile), but to make it all straightforward:

Friends and Enemies:
Known friend: Kaddok, the Shoanti wizard, who first trained Jal.

Unknown friend: Jal's nameless patron, some kind of faction-leader and/or powerbroker in Kaer Maga who has been helping Jal for years and, unknown to Jal, shielding him from his father's wrath. His symbol is an eagle in flight.

Known enemy: Jal's father, Jubrayl of Ustalav, a wealthy and powerful man in Magnimar who blames Jal for Jal's mother's death.

Unknown enemy: Chaine, Jal's pseudonymous (and thus far, academic) rival.

@Grun You're welcome!

@Hammas Wow! Excellent character you got there! Good luck!

@Jal Interesting character! Good luck in the recruitment!

@Everyone Good luck everyone! I've enjoyed reading so many great submissions! And to the GM thank you for this wonderful opportunity!

Indeed! Hammas looks like a well thought out character. I wish that they offered more variety in the non-iconic female half-orc avatars, but it is what it is. I looking forward to seeing which characters are chosen for this adventure!

Rose looked cool too now!

And same here! I'm usually quite patient but I guess I'm a bit over anxious to see what happens.

Yeah they don't offer too many half-orc portraits, which is the same for aasimars. They really need to offer more portraits.

Here is my submission: Human Brawler with Mutagenic and Shield Champion Archetypes. Big WWF fan growing up, so I remember seeing Ultimate Warrior pummel Andre the Giant and it always reminded me of a crazed barbarian fighting a Hill Giant, so that's where this concept came from. :) I know it's another martial concept and there is tough competition, but had to go with my gut. Good luck all!

Character background:

To say Jon Graves has had a tough life is an understatement. First, as a native of Trunau, a place where you never surrender and prefer death to capture, the fact that he was short for his age was not a good thing. He was bullied a lot and given the fact that he was quiet, naturally he was called derisively "Mouse" by the other young boys in the village. Word spread among the adults, especially his parents, who found the nickname endearing. The love of his parents was all that kept young Mouse sane and able to endure the torment. That is, until the age of 10, when orcs raided the caravan where he and his parents were traveling and slew his parents in front of his eyes. How Jon wished he had been 12 and undergone the Hopeknife ceremony so he cold take his own life and spare himself the suffering that was to come! He was 10, however, and the orcs enjoyed tormenting the young child and instead took him along with some young girls prisoners back to their camp. There, he was beaten, mocked, enslaved, and scarred for life with acid smeared on his face by the orc leader, Greytusk, a sadistic bastard who did so, when Mouse tripped and spilled his drink. Permanently disfigured, Jon begged for an end to his sad existence, but for three months, nothing came of his prayers. Until Halgra of the Blackened Blades led an assault on the orc camp and rescued Jon and the children and brought them back to Trunau.
However, Jon Graves died in that orc camp; only Mouse was left. For weeks after, Mouse was placed under suicide watch as he contemplated killing himself many different ways. Finally, Halgra, who came to care for the young child, inspired and counseled the young child to grow from the experience; to seek vengeance when available against the orcs; and to protect the atrocities that occurred to him from ever happening to any other child in Trunau. Mouse found hope and salvation in those words: he would never let the orcs hurt his village and the only family he had left ever again. He started running and exercising, certain that he would never be weak or a victim ever again. He may be Mouse but he was going to the strongest Mouse ever!
At age 12, he underwent the Hopeknife ceremony and was given his own knife, which he still carries to this day. He tried to become an inspiration to the village, to persevere and strive forward. His dedication impressed a traveling human monk by the name of Juriel, who upon hearing his tale of woe in the tavern one night, decided to teach the young and motivated youth to fight with his fists, head, and legs. Even after the monk's departure, Mouse continued his training regimen and coupled with the onset of puberty, toned his body and especially his strength to its maximum potential. Upon turning 16, Muse joined the town militia, where he became proficient with the shield and adapted it as his weapon of choice, in addition to his unarmed attacks. He saved enough gold and had Sara Morninghawk add spikes to his shield.
However, it was not enough for Mouse and he began inquiring discretely about town of means to enhance his strength beyond its limits through herbs, magic, natural and unnatural means.
Then one morning about 6 months ago, Mouse found on the doorstep of his home a dusty tome on alchemy outlining various alchemical means of enhancing his strength. He read that book night and day until he perfected as well as he could his craft. His skill is still unpredictable and at times, his mutagen backfires but Mouse will endure the circumstances as long as he can defend his village to his utmost ability. Mouse hopes one day he is strong enough to take the battle to the orcs.
Appearance: Mouse is a short human, only 5'7" and bald and quite muscular. He bears the constant reminders of his disfigurement on his face anytime he looks in the mirror and he tends to wear his hooded cloak up to avoid stares. He also has permanent lash marks on his back, which have scarred over, also thanks to the orcs.
Personality: Mouse is very protective of his village and the people he cares about. He cannot allow anyone to suffer as he did and he is extremely protective about children and will charge in recklessly even at cost of his own life. Despite all the horrible things that have happened to him, Mouse tries to be an inspiration for his people.
Combat: Believing in a strong defense, Mouse focuses on shield and punch technique, saving his dagger for slashing damage, if needed. He carries vials of acid, ironically, should he encounter any orcs, especially Greytusk, so he can return the favor. When he needs the best defense, he uses his mutagen.
Friend: Though he is known about town and has become a cautionary tale, Mouse's most trusted friend is Halgra, without whom he would be dead by now. He seeks her advice on occasion. If she is not viable choice, then Sara Morninghawk.
Unknown friend: To this day, Mouse has no idea who left the alchemical tome on his doorstep and turned him on to this field. He is very curious to know who greatly aided him in such a way.
Known Enemy: The orc leader, Greytusk, who wielded a greataxe adorned with skulls and had him smeared with acid escaped death the night of Halgra's raid on the camp, as he was away. Mouse has sworn vengeance on him.
Unknown enemy: Greytusk's commander - Mouse is not sure if it is an ogre or a giant.
Posting ability: I run 2 campaigns on this site and play in 3 others, so I can post multiple times per day.

This is Tilnar's submission (I'm recycling an old alias from a dead campaign with a new character) -- slight change of plan from the original, going half-orc (well, quarter-orc, really).

Yverstrix is a Bard (Savage Skald) and would generally serve as a secondary melee fighter and party buffer (with real bardic performance -- the Skald class' raging song mechanic is far too situational [and, in fact, doesn't actually help barbarians] -- and I'm still waiting on a clarifications about the Spell Warrior archetype).

In terms of the other questions:

Posting Schedule/Ability:
I'm located in Eastern Time and, druing the week, check the messageboards every evening and post at that time (my ability to post during the day has largely fallen away, firewall blocking the site -- though I do check via my phone and often post that way in the mornings or over lunch as well). Basically, I'm good for 1 guaranteed post per weekday, sometimes more (especially in combat) -- though I won't just post partial monologues daily if there's nothing to react to. I'm also good for at least 1 post per weekend (while the site's not blocked from home, there is the small matter of a family...) I've been a regular poster in a number of games (and am still involved in at least a few -- feel free to check them out and/or PM the GMs).

Close Friend:

Clearly, based on Yver's backstory, this would have to be the old dwarf, Rolgar, who took him in -- and, really, was probably the only father figure that he's ever known. I kind of imagine Rolgar to be a Negotiator bard with a couple of levels, and an ex-adventurer.

Known Enemy:

Again, this one's pretty obvious -- it's got to be Grakk Onetusk, the Ogrekin Orc former leader of the warband. Grakk's still a powerful warrior, despite his age and the curse, but, his "direct" powerbase was taken from him by Yver's mother. Grakk's smarter than most Ogrekin (and a lot of Orcs), but worse, he's quite cunning and still has allies scattered around Belkzen (like Vulg), and, in fact, has been trying to build a new powerbase (he has been spending a lot of time with the Fire Giants of Kragnaroth...)

Grakk's not the forgive-and-forget type, so he's still planning to settle matters with Yver's mother -- and Yver, too, since he's eventually learned that Vulg failed and the boy survived.

Unknown Friend:

I was originally leaning toward Trisgrak (his mother) having contacted someone to "keep an eye" on Yver -- such that she's basically known everything he's been up to all of this time. However, I can't help but think that there's a better story if the unknown friend is Annick's younger sister, Katarin -- I'm thinking that she was 2 or 3 years younger (just enough to be effectively invisible to the older kids) than Annik, Kriger and Yver -- that she had a crush on him back then and, so, refused to believe that he was responisble for killing her sister. Her questions about what happened that night have only increased over time, and she's tripped over some of the back-and-forth contact between Rolgar and Trisgrak, so she knows that he's alive and is now out looking for him. In my mind, Katarin would have been either a barbarian shield maiden (Kellid, after all) or a hexcrafter magus (having abandonned training as a witch when Annick was killed and taken up the sword instead).

Unknown Enemy:

I see two possible avenues here.

The first is the more apparent selection (which may not be sufficiently unknown), and that'd be Kriger -- Yver's former best friend who's never forgiven him for murdering the girl he loved... and who's basically following Katarin so that she'll lead him to Yver (either tracking her from afar or by playing/conning her and accompanying her). Based on his need for revenge, I actually see Kriger as being a ranger or slayer.

In the second, per Yver's backstory, Tóríen, the Skald (Yver's father) left his Clan over a matter of honour: he was part of the crew of a longship captained by the Clan leader's second son, when they came upon the corpse of a young white dragon. The captain, seeking to gain standing and possibly inherit his father's place, decided that they would claim credit for the kill. As Tóríen was a skald, and thus, the truth-speaker for the longship, his account would be a key part of their claim -- but he refused to go along with it... And so, he was cast from the ship, and knowing that they sailed back with their 'evidence', such that the false account would already be truth before he arrived, never returned to his Clan.

Following this path would open up as an enemy the former captain who is now chief of the Clan [or given the timeframes, his first-born], which would almost assuredly by Ulfen Barbarians. -- an enemy from the Clan (since the captain is now chief, after all).... Having said that, however, if we want to really go for broke, it also allows a more dangerous enemy, specifically the mate of the slain young dragon. In this scenario, it's about revenge on the humans that claimed to have killed his mate -- and given the time frames, it's not hard to think he's a good 40-50 years older (and more powerful) now.

I'm getting back on my feet, but it's a long, hard road. I'm having to rebuild all my PFS and PF characters in Hero Lab, as they were lost when it crashed, along with everything else. No data could be recovered, and I'm back to Day One. Novels in progress, pictures, passwords, you name it. Anyway, give me a day or two and I will make a decision. I'm in the process of reviewing submissions now.

I am going to GenCon next week, so my opening may be a little delayed, but we will go forward, so don't worry about that.

Take your time! I've been in the same boat you're in when I was forced to do a hard clean install when my hard drive messed up, so I know what you're going through. I don't mind waiting. So no need to rush.

Okay, I've finally managed to make a decision. Let me start by saying that there were some positively brilliant submissions and I was hard-pressed to select just five (six, counting Agast). If you did not get chosen, please do not feel that it was because of your character, as everyone did a wonderful job! The nature of the draw is that only five slots are available and I chose based on what provided the broadest variation and the best chance of survival, along with those I felt would mesh well together.

I briefly gave consideration to an entirely half-orc party, as I have never seen so many half-orc characters in one place, but I ultimately decided that would be unfair to those who did not submit a half-orc character (and would leave the group short on arcane support).

I also want to say that I have enjoyed reading your backstories and while they were a secondary consideration, some of you really put forth a fantastic effort!

But I ramble on and the shadows grow long. I'm sure that you wish I would just shut up and get on with telling you who was selected. So, without further delay, the chosen are:

Chosen:
Aghast Grogh (PapaJohn41)
Norasha Mountainrunner (SCKnightHero1)
Boram the Burglar (Robert Henry)
Zeviel Grovesong (Mimesyne)
Rockar Longclaw (DeviousDevious)

Wow! Thank you for picking me.

While I was picked, I want to say that I greatly enjoyed reading everyone's characters. There were so many wonderful heroes and adventurers created. All of whom were downright interesting and very well thought out. It was an honor to have met all of you and looked at your characters. I hope we can adventure with each other in the future!

And to our GM, we thank you for this wonderful opportunity and we all hope things get better for you and that you have a safe and fun adventure at GenCon!
