Hey crowd mdt referred me from another game. I have a few ideas, however, I only have 6th edition, and am also new at the game in general though not at gaming in particular. So I am thinking a magic user bard type or a black widow spy sort.
Either will fit well. As I said, there are plenty of parallels where magic is real, however, you should be aware that there are also low mana parallels where your magic will be handicapped.

GURPS! Who said GURPS!
I just noticed this was a GURPS Campaign, and that two days after lamenting the severe lack of those games to a friend. I have to say, when one learns the system, it's by far one of the best, if sometimes too mathematics heavy.
I have some background in 4e, and some in 3e GURPS. I find 4e a lot better in most, if not all ways.
Regarding characters: It appears that we have two military-bent character ideas, at least, as well as a possible spy/talker individual. A science/exploration/investigation type might come in handy, I believe, so I think that is where I'll be heading!
EDIT: Noticed another idea by mdt regarding the physician. I'll let the concept influence the build.

mdt |

Hey TLC, how goes?
And yes, C'deth is a spy/physician, so scientist would be a great addition! C'deth doesn't know a quark from an alien bar tender.
EDIT : Note that C'deth is not an espionage type spy! We need one of those too. C'deth is more of a gather general information and/or scout type spy. He can talk his way out of trouble, but he's not going to know how to rifle drawers or hack a security system. And he wouldn't know which top secret file is the valuable one vs the routine garbage one.

Question to the GM:
Regarding Advantages, there's a few that are bound to come up every time GURPS character creation begins, so here they are.
Gadgeteer: Is the 25 point version available? I have a specific dislike for the 50 point one, regardless of setting, so not asking about it.
Gunslinger: Is it available?
Talent: As per the Basic Set, or can we build our own (with your permission)
Luck: What versions are permitted?
Wild Talent: I would imagine it isn't, but thought I'd check them out instead.
A couple of concepts are already shaping in my head! An Indiana-esque character is indeed one of them, if with a different and somewhat more comedy bent, coming from an 'alternate history Earth'.
The other, though, I'd need to work on a bit more.

Infinity Unlimited will supply all the equipment that you require for missions, but you may want to pick up a few personal items. Keep in mind that weapons are prohibited except as required by a mission. Remember that your primary objective at all times is to maintain the Secret (dimensional travel). Natives of other parallels cannot be aware that you are from another dimension. Those who discover the Secret need to be recruited or dealt with.

I will allow the 25 point version of Gadgeteer.
Gunslinger: Is it available?
Yes, if it fits your concept.

You can build your own for my approval. If it seems logical and reasonable, I will let it pass.
Luck: What versions are permitted?
You can have the basic level of Luck only. The way that it will work is instead of per hour of play, it is usable once per scene.
Wild Talent: I would imagine it isn't, but thought I'd check them out instead.
Afraid not.

I was able to borrow a few 3rd edition resources from a friend (which iirc we can use with case by case approval from the GM?)... now my head is swimming (even more) with possibilities. I have questions.
First, is there a list of what's been made already? My ideas are all over the place and I'd like to avoid being too similar to anybody else. And would I make 6? Does that mean basically everyone would get in as long as their characters are alright?
Second, I'm a little unclear on where the line of acceptable concepts/abilities is... mdt is a shapeshifter (with some limitations), can we use other fantastical things if they're not too over the top? Like, could I make a guy from a world where humans evolved as sort of pseudo-4-dimensional beings? Kind of like how an ant is sort of 2-dimensional (just traveling on the surface of things) but they have some recognition of volume and some limited ability to function in the 3rd dimension; but in this case existing 3-dimensionally but with some awareness of and ability to move within the 4th dimension (time). If that's a viable concept, how far could it be taken? Something like chronolocation seems like it wouldn't be a big deal, but what about something like retrogression or fugue (probably with some limitations)? What about a limited form of time-jumper?
If that's not ok, is it because its too fantastical or because there are concerns about timey-wimey stuff in general?
Also, how do you feel about versions of historical or legendary figures? For example, there's a passage in the Christian Bible where Jesus says something about the apostle John not dying until his return (though John himself is quick to point out its a rhetorical device)- would it be within the realm of acceptability to make the apostle John from an alternate world where he actually was granted some form of immortality? Not actual immortality, I don't think, but like a 2,000 year old middle eastern Jew with the unaging advantage (and other abilities like faith healing, blessed, or true faith)?
Also, I'm not looking for spoilers but roughly where does Infinty fall ethically? And how long has it been running? Would it be conceivable to have been born to the company? Like, could a character have been born in an Infinity facility and raised to be part of this team? Most likely unaware if they were selectively bred, gene-hacked, or part of a slave race taken from some other Quanta...
I think that's enough questions for now (especially since I have other things I should have been doing right now, lol).

Yes, if we don't get any more, everyone is assured of getting in if their characters are acceptable.

I would prefer not to have any time-jumpers. I will allow dimension hopping, if you want to pay the cost for it. Primarily it's an artificial limitation due to the nature of the campaign (dimensional travel). Adding time travel would wreak havoc, I have a feeling. Other stuff, I'm lenient on. Officially, no worlds have been discovered with a TL higher than that of Homeline (TL8/9), but aliens do exist on some parallels, so it is possible to play an alien being.
Historical or legendary figures are fine. Persons are constantly being recruited from parallels where their disappearance can be explained by some means. That's the key. The disappearance must be explainable or happen under circumstances where no body could be found.

Keeping the Secret is paramount in all things. Infinity will kill or permit someone to die to preserve the Secret. Infinity as a company is fairly new; less than 30 years old (the current year in Homeline is 2027 and Infinity as a company was formed in 1998). They do not "grow" their own agents; Infinity is strictly involved in panachronics, not gene research and manipulation.

That's all very helpful (including Choon's update on party role), thank you. Is it relatively safe to say that the vast majority of discovered other worlds are within 1-2 TLs of Homeline (like, say 7-9)? Or are there like a bunch of 5-6 worlds within reliable reach and known 2-3s a little farther out?

Hello, all!
@GM - How does this look to you as a talent:
Talent(Natural Philosopher) - Archaeology, Biology, Chemistry, Naturalist, Physics, Tracking)
As for my character, I've dumped the second concept (which was of a former corporate spy), and I've decided to submit
One Sir Humphrey Cecil Worthington-Smythe, Loyal Subject of Queen Victoria III, Gentleman of the Crown and Explorer of the Royal Museum of Natural History.
I'll post a story either today or tomorrow, but Sir Humphrey (or just Sir Humphrey to his friends) is from a Quantum where the British Empire rules over most of the globe - most of the globe that is still discovered, due to the insistence of barbarians to utilise magic against the civilising influence of the Crown's trading companies.
The massive sea krakens and the occasional vampire don't help, either. The technological level is around TL8, with personal weaponry and armour being around early TL7, and civil and agricultural technology breaching into TL9. The Crown's trains always run on time.
He may or may not refer to Infinity as the Infinite Trading Company.
Skills-wise, he knows a fair amount about a lot, as bequest upon a graduate of the Royal Harvard Institute of Natural Sciences. He's also no slouch in combat, and while a gentleman, has always believed that sometimes finesse is required in obtaining items that would be hard to take by direct force.

edit: ninja'd... i'll revise some of the content below. TLC- what kind of combat do you do?
I scrolled through the thread and tried to compile a list of character concepts, mostly for my own reference, it looks like the ideas so far are:
mdt- shapeshifting Doctor with some scout/info gathering ability
Choon- sniper/recon
TLC- a gentlemen explorer and know-it-all with some combat ability
Edelsmirge- some kind of magic using 'face' type character
I couldn't find a 5th character; Grimdog73 left a dot but doesn't seem to have added anything beyond that. That leaves quite a bit of creative real estate for me to explore, but practically speaking it seems like maybe a close combat guy or a computer specialist might be two important areas that could be addressed? I mean, if the team was purposefully assembled for this work those seem like areas our leaders might want covered. I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on that though... is someone already planning to do either of those? Do others agree they might be good to cover?

mdt |

That seems like a decent position Nate. And there's no reason you could't do both with a decent dex and int.
One thing we should all be aware of, we likely need to be able to handle every major type of vehicle. C'deth can handle aerospace (Ground to Space craft) and automobiles (any wheeled ground vehicle that isn't double clutched). Choon's sniper can handle half-tracks. So we should probably have at least a few of the following covered :
Drive(Construction)
Drive(Heavy Wheeled)
Drive(Hovercraft)
Pilot(Contragravity)
Pilot(Heavy Airplane)
Pilot(Helicopter)
Pilot(High Performance Airplane)
Pilot(Light Airplane)
Pilot(Lighter than air)
Pilot(Vertol)

I planned for my soldier to be a decent all-around fighter with a tendency toward the longer ranges. His background is scout/sniper, but he isn't on the team to fulfill that specific role. More of the general Combat Expert role. If that changes how my points are distributed then I can shuffle them around.
I'm also trying to format an alias to accommodate the staggering amount of NUMBERS on the character sheets.

I'm presenting below the stat block of Sir Humphrey, pending approval.

Absent-Minded - 15 I decided that being lost in thoughts is appropriate, quite often.
Impulsiveness - 10 No red-blooded Englishman would stand for this!

That's the stat block I made, when considering that we might have to blend in in less-technologically advanced Quantums. If indeed most of them are TL8 and not TL4 or so on, I might make some changes (NOT having 14 ST being one of them, and getting more technological skills being those changes.)

@TLC - I could be mistaken, but I believe that negative attributes are still considered disadvantages.
Your GM might wish to “cap” the extra points you can gain from disadvantages; see Disadvantage Limit (p. 11). This limit applies to the total points you can get from all traits with negative point costs, from Chapter 1 (reduced attributes, low Status, etc.) or the list below. Mandatory disadvantages assigned by the GM don’t count against this limit.
I think the only time this isn't true is for templates, such as racial templates.

nate lange RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32 |

So, I think I'm going to play the normal guy...
Thom Andrews grew up on the shore of Lake Ontario half an hour from the Niagara Falls in Homeline. After graduating from High School he attended the Rochester Institute of Technology (an hour or so from home) on an Air Force ROTC scholarship. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a double major in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. In the Air Force he served as a pilot for 4 years before being recruited by the NSA. He was only with the NSA for 2 years before representatives from Infinity arrived to make him an offer he couldn't refuse.
I have his mechanics mostly done, but I'll need to type them all up. Basically, he's primarily a computers guy (using, hacking, fixing, etc) with some piloting skills and very basic training in pistols and hand-to-hand fighting.
Thoughts?
edit: oh, I need approval for a talent...
Computer Expert: Computer Hacking, Computer Operation, Computer Programing, Electronics Repair, Engineer, Mathematics [5 points/level]

mdt |

@GM - C'Deth's medical skills are based on 'current form', so, if he's a human (base human), then any human would be a normal roll. What penalty would have for working on a gengineered human if he was in human form? Is it a flat penalty or is it based on how many points the racial template costs? Or something else? Same question for if he's in a gengineered form? For example, a Heavy Worlder is radically different from an Alpha, but an Alpha and an Ishtar are basically two versions of the same mods.
Mainly I just want to hammer this out so I can make a matrix, and then decide if it's worth changing forms before doing first aid/etc on someone.

Thom Andrews |

Well, there's not much fluff but this alias should have all the crunch I think... I'd love feedback.
edit: I just realized I forgot all about quirks! I'm definitely going to pick up a couple once I look through them. Oh, that means a few more points too... maybe I'll pick up another broken language, or grab a courtesy rank for being a retired air force officer? Wait, I'm correct in remembering that those couple points from quirks don't count towards your disadvantage total, right?

I am willing to waive the fact that low attributes are disadvantages, so long as it doesn't get out of control (i.e., if it fits your character concept and isn't done just to reap points).
Marvelous! I managed to recycle an old alias!
I didn't realise I was playing the game wrong for that long - I guess you learn something everyday. I've always found it a bit silly that Will and Per scale directly with IQ, leading to steel-gazed scientists next to panicking soldiers, but, well!
I reduced the basic speed both to come into the point limit and to be able to indicate some old injury. At any rate, I am ready to discover the marvels of the multiverse!
