Ouch. So close. And yeah, Faeron was right. What you got hit with was weird.

Although Bishop, Terrill, and Skybek are able to recognize the phantasms as imaginary--ripped from their own minds--Faeron, Val, and Timber are not so lucky. Fear becomes all encompassing, shutting down nervous systems and stopping hearts. Their bodies crumple and float mid-air, slowly dissipating into the grey aether...

Faeron:
The mummy's ragged mouth shuts tight and all lights go dark. You die.
Val:
The corrupted Desna embraces you tight, and the last thing you see is her bloody grin. You die.[/ooc]
Timber:
Timber tries to leap for the alpha's throat, but no muscle will answer. The beast's jaws close around Timber and all lights go dark. Timber dies.

Osprey's voice calls out to the now half-strength party. "HOLD IT OFF!"

Round II
1. Faeron (dead), Bishop (Timber dead), Terrill, Val (dead), Skybek

I have to restrict my posting time today. I have a HUGE IKS project that I need to focus on. My natural inclination is to check constantly, but in an effort to get this to the Headmasters, I'm going to post now so I can focus my free time on getting this done. If you need me back here to roll, text me (or have Mike bot me), otherwise I won't check my PC games until about 2200 EST tonight. The IKS project is on something we've discussed before and makes for a good conversation over whiskey if you're coming home December.

Things are looking up! At least for the first half of my post. Terrill's jingasa comes to the rescue, negating not only the crit but also the sickened condition and the threat of blindness. You get your folio roll back! The rest I will save for next round (if you survive) as that was just the AoO...

Skybek sends forth a wash of Cayden's holy power--to great effect! It's hard to tell if the creature is blinded, however, when it doesn't appear to really have eyes. Will: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (1) + 15 = 16 FAIL!

Sadly, it has the Blind-Fight feat.

The Terror keeps its attention on Terrill, lashing out with all four tentacles to wrap around his armored form.

Grapple @ Terrill: 1d20 + 29 ⇒ (18) + 29 = 47 2d100 ⇒ (42, 71) = 113 SUCCESS

Wrapped in its icy embrace, Terrill's head fills with screams and nightmares, rending his very mind! Psychic Damage: 12d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 4, 3, 6, 1, 2, 3, 3, 3, 5, 3) = 40 DC 23 Will for half, but it won't matter--see below.

Erastil chooses this time to grace Bishop's bow with his own holy aura in this critical time of need. Four arrows spring forth from the bow and only one is diverted--the remaining trio rips mightily through the Terror's incorporeal form and leaving it in echoing shreds. The pained roar of a dying behemoth cascades through the tattered but standing (floating?) party like a coal burning on the inside of the skull. Suddenly, the whole environs falls away and a sensation of falling returns, followed by a total darkness.

Skybek, Terrill, and Bishop awaken to Osprey, Saphira, and another priest smacking them in the face. Through a dizzying haze, they can vaguely see the world--the real world--around them. Faeron, Val, Xersus, and even Timber lie by their sides, covered in sweat and blood but very clearly breathing. The survivors themselves appear to have no wounds whatsoever.

Dunnamast, too, breathes amidst a pool of blood. And sh*t. Swimming not recommended.

"What in Cayden's name just happened?" Saphira asks, to which Osprey responds with a slight smile, "A great deal."

Welcome back from the dream world! Nobody actually died. Those who 'died' are in fact very alive. The battle was quasi-real, so those who 'died' are injured and at half health, but the clerics of Temple will heal them up for free in thanks for saving Dunnamast. Those who survived have no injuries. Moreover, equipment and spells used up in the dream world were not actually consumed, so you get those slots back, and Terrill can use his jingasa again, and Faeron/Bishop have their ammo still.

It occurred to me to ask whether I needed to use my re-roll if I used the jingasa - but this is a much better answer than I expected!

Terrill swats Saphira's hands away in alarm, convinced they are the lashing tentacles of the Terror come to claim him! On seeing where he is, however, he manages to calm himself a little and take a few deep breaths, amazed that's he's breathing at all. "What happened? Did we defeat it?" he asks, then pauses as he sees that his companions, though injured, still live.

"Wha..? Was none of it real?" Turning to the venture-captain with the smile - which Terrill cannot help but think of as a smirk - he says, "What do you mean? What happened to us? I saw half of our number slain, yet they lie there breathing!"

I'm reasonably certain that was a personal best for me across the 6 editions of this game I've played; 227 damage in one round.

Bishop looks around, not at all curious about the mechanics or results of the psychic realm. He makes eye contact with each of his fellow Pathfinders. In the end he gives Timber a reciprocated headbutt. "when this is done, I promise someone or something is going to say good-bye to this world..."

The ranger looks at Osprey and plucks the string of Decision. "now what? "

"No, I don't think so, Skybek," Osprey says. "I was able to get only a few answers from Dunnamast in the dream world, but there is clearly something larger at work here. A primordial demon would not be here if Baldimar's archives did not survive and its presence suggests that there is something of great value to demonkind within. Why else would they risk attacking a major temple in the heart of the City at the Center of the World? But! Dunnamast will likely need a few hours to recover before he is ready to talk, and I suggest we all get some rest."

The enigmatic druid whispers a few words and Xersus awakens, wholly disoriented. After a short conversation with him in an unrecognized tongue, Osprey turns to the party. (Val/Faeron/Timber are awake by now.) "I fear that Xersus has suffered significant psychic scarring from the attack. I should get him back to Skyreach for recovery. The Decemvirate will also want to know the gravity of what we're dealing with. Get some rest tonight and interview Dunnamast in the morning."

Saphira offers her profound thanks for saving Brother Dunnamast and gives the group a place to rest for the night, as well as a hot meal and any needed healing. Opportunity to re-prep spells if interested. In the morning, the group reconvenes around Dunnamast's recovery bed. The Caydenite sits upright in his bed, sipping a spiked coffee, battered but cheerful. "Hello hello! My thanks for bringing me back from that... thing." He shudders. "Not sure what happened, really. Met a pretty lass, she seemed interested in the Drunken God. After a few, she got real giddy and asked to meet me in the store room. I remember kissing her, then I must have blacked out. The ale, probably." His face looks almost fond, but he shrugs.

"Anyway, I hear you came asking about Baldimar and his studies. He didn't talk about it much, but I did see him fiddling with a flagstone under the bench in the garden one time and seemed startled when I asked him about it. I figure he was just drunk, but maybe not. Try there. Maybe he left a note or something."

Much rested, and still savoring the sensation of relief from learning that his companions are all alive and well, Terrill listens in as Val and Skybek question the recovered Dunnamast.

As the conversation winds down, he nods along with Bishop's suggestion, "I agree, let's check out this flagstone. Great mysteries have been solved with a simple start before."

Kingmaker Tactical | Strategic | The Marchlands | Campaign Tracking | Liberation Points: 4

Interrupting the conversation, Osprey walks in with a frail-looking Xersus employing the use of a cane. "Ah, good to see you are all awake!"

"And good to see Dunnamast up too," adds Xersus in a hoarse voice. "I fear that there is a great evil at work here. I have brought some items that may offer some protection..."

"But a Pathfinder's wit will be the best armor," Osprey replies cryptically. He drops a satchel on the floor. Inside: one gem of brightness, scroll of dismissal, scroll of magic circle against evil, scroll of restoration, scroll of atonement, scroll of dispel evil.

In the garden, the group finds a lone bench with a large flagstone beneath, which Faeron and Terrill heave aside--revealing a wide but steep set of stairs descending into darkness.

At this point, Saphira steps into the garden with an urgent look, but stops abruptly. "By Cayden himself! A secret storeroom!" She shakes her head and remembers what she came here for. "Right! Because Bishop clearly needs more optimization :)

"Well, you know, there aren't many rules governing garb and whatnot," Saphira says to Skybek, "but you should be able to recognize them compared to demons, no? Names are Tal, Mak, Berdun, and Cort. Please find them!"

The party begins their descent. In the lead, Terrill is the first to notice the stairs suddenly become slick with blood about half way down. Bishop catches Timber sniffing around and stops him just before he starts snacking on fingers. Human fingers. Four severed human fingers.

The long stairwell ends in a small, curved foyer facing a set of heavy iron double doors. Crumpled against one is the body of a man, likely one of Saphira's priests. He is missing four fingers on his right hand, solving that mystery.

DC 15 Heal:
Cause of death appears to be a crushed windpipe.

Two alcoves on either side of the door each feature a statue of the Drunken Hero himself, one holding a massive flagon and the other hoisting a large sack of grain. The second one is badly scarred and chipped, and one of its arms lies shattered on the floor, broken at the shoulder. The double doors themselves are shut, but appear to have been previously forced open. A message is written across them in blood: Enter not.

5d20 ⇒ (15, 3, 11, 20, 10) = 59

Enacting the SDOP, the party quickly learns that the doors are both magical and trapped.

Terrill shakes his head as they find the mutilated body, his worst fears confirmed. Seeing the statues of Cayden Cailean, he says, "Funny that this was built as part of the temple, but the head priestess didn't know about it. Wonder what other surprises this place holds?"

At the end of the hall, Terrill steps away from the trapped door, commenting, "Hmm, Faeron, looks like you're up."

Faeron works on the magical trap for a moment before declaring it safe and opening the door. Unfortunately, he didn't quite negate the magicks. A ghoulish shadow reaches out from the door to grasp him!

Touch @ Faeron: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22 HIT Negative Energy: 8d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 1, 1, 2, 1, 6, 4) = 25 plus Bleed Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 2) = 4

Ephierone: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Shadow: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23

Faeron feels the energy drain him; the touch seemed to have eaten away the skin entirely and now his arm is bleeding badly. But before he can react, an even greater shadow comes slamming into him from the hallway beyond! Bearing wings and claws and teeth, the shadow rips into him with a chilling coldness.

"Oh, Terrill..." comes a cheery voice from behind him, "you've wandered somewhere fun!"

Faeron and Terrill's blows seem to evaporate against the shade, its wispy body reforming after each strike. The half-elf's attention is turned behind him for a moment, and there is Desna herself in the flesh! Make a Will save!

1. Shadow
2. Faeron (21/91 hp, bleeding), Terrill
3. Ephierone Desna!

Edit: did my math wrong slightly. Faeron hit twice and Terrill once, but none of the hits succeeded in damaging the creature.

Can I make some flavor of knowledge check to determine why these blows are ineffective? Usually magic weapons effect incorporeal, so I'd like to konw what's the deal--and whether I've prepped anything that could rectify said deal.

"Desna my arse... I saw your kind on the pillars. Not impressed. I saw YOUR kind at a wedding. You're both dead." Decision will bypass anything except Epic, bludgeoning, and slashing. If Val shouts something useful, I'll target the shadow. If not, I'll target the Desna.

Val:
Val happens to have read just the right book! He suspects that this creature is a shadow demon of unusual strength. Shadow demons are terrible creatures know to take possession of their victims. Incorporeal PLUS damage reduction is a nasty combo. Most demons are susceptible to cold iron weapons and good weapons.

Bishop advances and gets off an arrow. It buries itself in the woman's shoulder. Skybek readies a spell, but waits on Val... and I still need a Will save from Terrill!
