It is hard to say, but the mention of "eggs" and "host" reminds Bytor of a passage he once read about extraplanar xills, which are all female and reproduce by forcibly planting their eggs in living hosts. Xills particularly prize phase spiders as hosts, so perhaps that is what you are talking to.

Zzamas leads you down into the valley for over an hour, and the strange stone obelisk looms ever larger. The phase spider sometimes disappears from sight before a reappearing a few seconds later further down the path. As you get close to the stone, this becomes more frequent.

At last you crest a small rise, and spot five creatures that seem half man and half-insect. Their skin is flame-red, and they hold cruel knives in each of their four hands while they dance a macabre jig by the Stone, clacking their large mandibles. One (pink, the nearest) is a foot taller than the others.

They do not take long to notice you!

John acts before Toth here, so John's arrows hit first, then Toth's bite and rakes, so I will apply Toth's last attack to Black.

Hastened by Bytor's spell, John lands a fourth arrow, giving Toth the opening to fell the matriarch! The three remaining xills swear vengeance and lay into their still-moving foes with a fury!

Short Sword @ Toth: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (16) + 13 = 29 HIT Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
