From what I understand we're overmatched since Wymond's not in his armor, so any attack roll over 10 will hit him, and with 8 out of 13 HP, it'd be easy to kill him, since Zaia can't protect him with more healing magic, and Perfire's out of spells too. Also, I thought it was clear I was making the Strength check to move rubble barring the door so we could make our escape, like Yirrik was doing.


I said the way to retreat was clear. Yirrik and Zaia cleared it. Okay, proceed!

(Zaia would have quickly shared this tidbit of info with the rest of the party: It's a magical automation, possibly related to the Azlanti builders of the green castle. Its bodily adds-ons are probably the goblins' doing. She also warns that this armoured monster is still somewhat powerful (though not as much as it once was) and has abilities beyond her ken.)

She heard a goblin's voice coming from the darkness behind the prone automation. Gesturing for quiet, she quickly lifted her torch off the ground by her feet and carefully and slowly opened the door a little (once her companions were ready/close and prepared) and peered/peeked out in case some of the goblins were waiting on their very doorstep. (Checking to see it's clear of immediate threat before opening the door wide and exiting)

Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21


Zaia:
Just want to make sure you know I said the automaton was -previously- powerful. It's almost certainly less so now.

The moment Zaia opens the door, an arrow zips out of the darkness and embeds itself in the door.

Zaia acted out of order. My fault. I wasn't paying attention. So, she'll miss her next action.

Moving Wymond to the west (up) door, because that's where I believe him to be, currently.

The automaton tries to rise from the muck and fails, crashing back to the ground.

'We're surrounded! Probably best to try to tackle the big odd one while he's having trouble standing. I'll find the one shooting at us!' Perfire steps into cover and levitates a torch into his hand.

Wymond grunts in pain, but he nods at Perfire's words. He prepares to move over to the prone creature and takes a swing at him.

Will that be a coup-de-grace?


No. It is not helpless. You do, however, get a +4 bonus to hit because it is prone.

Before Wymond moves back to attack the magical automation per Perfire's suggestion, she touches the paladin's arm and casts Guidance, imbuing him with a small portion of Desna's divine grace. (Standard action)

Holding the torch in her offhand, Zaia removes the starknife from her belt and holds it ready in her true hand. (Move action)

Wymond gets a +1 competence bonus on a single attack roll, saving throw, or skill check. Last 1 minute or until discharged.

He nods at Perfire's advice and runs over to Wymond's side and hacks at the fallen automaton with his sword...

Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3


Don't forget the +4 because Clanky is prone.

Yirrik's blade slams down at the fallen automaton, but just barely grazes its armor. The machine is made of some ancient material, harder than iron!

From the darkness beyond the grease spell comes a eerie, hollow voice, speaking in an alien tongue! Wymond's heart is gripped with fear!

Wymond, give me DC 13 Will save against fear, sir! If you succeed, you may take your turn.

Wymond grimaces as the fear grips him, and he grits his teeth, but then Triath lets out a squeal that snaps him back to reality and he realizes there's nothing here more frightening than the dark. He tromps over to where the machine man lays and raises his axe to chop down on it!

Would Clanky attempting to stand provoke an AoO from Wymond. I'm unsure and don't see anything about a FAILED attempt to stand

'Keep at him!' Perfire encourages his allies as he moves back to the Western doorway. He looks into the darkness, then down at the torch in his hand, then at the door. With a shrug Perfire quickly forces the door closed.

'Back to one front for now.'


I think that's a GM's call. I could argue it either way. But I think that if he doesn't stand, it doesn't draw an AoO.

I was waiting on Yirrik to see what he would do as there's no room to move (at the door) to attack said creature with melee weapon currently as both Yirrik and Wymond are occupying the squares by the door. I was hoping Yirrik would attack and move out of the way and then I'd have Zaia act this round.

Yirrick raises aneyebrow at his frien's prodigious slam on the fabricated guardian, muttering "Show off!

Mustering his own strength, seeking to emulate Wymond, Yirrick raises his sword and brings it down hard....

He then looks over his shoulder at Zaia, "Come on, take a whack! and moves over to stand behind Wymond

Yirrik's blow barely breaches the automaton's carapace, slightly damaging it.

Yirrik moved out of the way, and Zaia can get into melee if she wishes. She's fighting around a hard corner, so Clanky will get a +4 bonus to its AC to offset the -4 penalty for being prone.

Sorry for the hold up - just a full-on day.

Zaia moved forward 20ft, and, from around the corner of the door tried to strike the prone magical automation with her starknife.

Attack with Starknife: 1d20 + 0 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 0 + 4 - 4 = 15
Piercing Damage, if hits: 1d4 ⇒ 2

Don't think that'll hit since its AC went back up to normal due to the hard corner.


Actually, it hits. Clanky's in rough shape. But it doesn't pierce Clanky's damage resistance.

Zaia's starknife is well-aimed, but merely scratches the jury-rigged automaton's carapace.

From the darkness beyond Clanky, a goblin voice calls out and Wymond feels a strange compulsion to throw himself on the floor.

Wymond, give me a Will save, DC 13. If you succeed, you may take an action. If you fail, you throw yourself to the floor and it's my turn again.

Perfire winces as Wymond hits the floor. Seeing the eastern door blocked by his friends, and not wanting to pelt them with sling stones, the halfling begins attempting to re-block the western door.

'Wymond, are you allright?' he calls over his shoulder.

Zaia softly sighed at seeing Yirrik hurt by a flying arrow and knowing Wymond was hurt also. She did not possess enough magic to heal the two of them, let alone the whole group, at this rate. There had to be a way to get out of this chamber and soon.

Seeing the prone paladin, Zaia stepped 5 ft back to make room for Yirrik. Bending down a little, she touched her hand to Wymond and began to cast, asking Desna to infuse the paladin with some of her divine guidance in hopes it could help him a little.

Cast Guidance on Wymond: +1 competence bonus on a single attack roll, saving throw, or skill check.

Yirrik hastily switches places with Zaia, glad to be out of the sight of that archer, calls out to Perfire, "Pefire! Can you use your trick to shed some light in there, so we can see the buggers casting spells and shooting us?"

He winces as the arrow in his shoulder shifts, but steels his heart, slamming his sword once again into the prone automaton.

Meanwhile, a part of his brain is laught uprariously at Wymond's predicatment.

Attack: 1d20 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 4 = 9
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6


Yirrik's attack deflects off of Clanky's carapace.

A voice in the dark chants in goblin and a wave of vile energies, black and purple and other hues not found in nature, rolls over Wymond, Yirrik and Perfire.

Channel Negative Energy: 1d6 ⇒ 6

Wymond, Yirrik, Perfire, give me a Will save (DC 9) for half.
