GM SpiderBeard |

Rowena darts outside, drawing her longbow.
The monstrous black widow rears up and snaps down at Meriui, its vicious fangs piercing for his abdomen. However the valiant paladin crouches and brings his shield up. The spider falls on his shield and presses down repeatedly, its fangs coming within inches of Meriui's face. He responds by slamming his scimitar into the spider, which allows him to shove it off of him.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Everyone can go!

Thora Grimmsdottir |

Thora gives a mighty grunt and hacks at the spider webs again.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Damage: 1d12 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Then she moves a little further to the south, giving someone else room to join in the fun!

Ayesha Jalal |

Ayesha was not in range to hit the spider with her weapon, so she did the only thing she could. The pea-sized ball of acid flew unerringly to the rooftop, doing a minor amount of damage.
ranged touch: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
damage: 1d3 ⇒ 3

Sarkast |

Climb check: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16 Climb check: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Sarkast makes his way up the wall. Just as he reaches the roof, his hand grabs hold of a loose piece of masonry, leaving him a few feet short of his goal.
Both actions to make climb checks, one succeeds, the other fails but not by enough to cause him to fall. He is now 15' up the wall.

GM SpiderBeard |

The spider has descended to the ground and is currently engaged in melee with Meriui. That gives Ayesha's attack a -4, but it still hits.

Meriui bin Mircea |

IIRC how charges work, Jinxx would have had to stop one square "higher" on the map. He would still flank with Thora, so he gets the bonus either way. Just Meriui wouldn't get the benefit. <shrug>
attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Meriui attempts to defend himself, trying to beat the spider back off of his shield and out of his face, but he gets the angles wrong and his scimitar just skitters across the spider's carapace.

GM SpiderBeard |

I'll assume Ronan is holding since Jinxx has moved.
Rowena nocks and fires an arrow through the crowd at the huge spider, which manages to penetrate its carapace.
Attack: 1d20 ⇒ 17
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3
The wounded black widow twitches about violently as it throws Jinxx off of its back. It rears back and pounces at Meriui again, who once more brings his shield up in the nick of time.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Everyone is up!

Meriui bin Mircea |

"Serenrae! Please, see this creature of darkness vanquished before it manages to hurt any of these people!"
Meriui swings yet again, hoping that his blade will be guided by a mind better than his own.
Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Ronan Black |

Jinxx takes 5'step and attacks
Claw1: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 3 + 2 = 24
Claw2: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 3 + 2 = 20
Bite: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 3 + 2 = 21
Claw1 Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Claw2 Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Bite Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

GM SpiderBeard |

After Meriui manages a solid hit with his scimitar, Jinxx pounces on the back of the black widow once more, and bites the spider clean through at the thorax. The spider jerks violently, and then lays still with the eidolon on top of it. Jinxx happily hops up, and the enormous creature curls up and lays still.
End of Combat

Sarkast |

Well, it figures things would be over before I get into position! I guess I can just take 10 now to get the rest of the way up...
Sarkast finishes the climb to the roof and looks around. Retrieving his spear, he checks for any other dangers or visitors while he is up there.

Ayesha Jalal |

Ayesha sighs as the combat ended, realizing that once more she was practically useless in the fight. Still, no one was seriously hurt and the giant spider was dead. She moved over to take a closer look at the spider, trying to determine if it was anything she had heard of before.
k. arcana: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
k. planes: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

GM SpiderBeard |

Sarkast pulls himself onto the roof, and takes a look around. Aside from some dessicated vermin, there's not much of note up top.
Ayesha examines the spider carefully, but it does not appear to be a magical or extraplanar creature of any kind. It just looks like a really big spider.

Ronan Black |

"Yes let us continue with getting this place cleaned of all the filth. Jinxx stay out here and keep an eye on things again."
Ronan looks over at Gwern with a sly smile and says to the man "Lord Horgus, maybe you could keep Jinxx company, he seems to have taken a shine to you."

Sarkast |

"I shall remain here as lookout until we are ready to move on."
Sarkast perches on the roof, keeping an eye out for further trouble. In the meantime, he takes out a whetstone and begins to sharpen the points on his spears.
If it takes more than 15 minutes to finish up here, the whetstone will give a +1 damage to Sarkast's next damage roll. If it takes longer, he'll sharpen as many of his weapons as time allows. He'll be taking 10 on Perception to keep watch.

GM SpiderBeard |

The rest of the group piles back into the temple in order to complete the cleaning. Unknown time passes as Sarkast perches on the roof as a lookout while the rest of the party continues scrubbing walls, hauling out rubble, and repairing the pews. Anevia and Aravashnial rest while Horgus continues to order people around and occasionally interfere. Despite his acerbic orders, he seems to know what he's talking about and his suggestions are informed from somebody who knows religious matters.
Finally, Meriui, Horgus, and Rowena realize that the group has done what they can. The temple no longer looks dusty, dark, and the menacing feel has largely fled it. Ayesha's work to uncover some text on the wall reveals a large prayer in dwarven. This must be read to finally consecrate the temple.

Sarkast |

Unknown time passes ...
How many weapons worth of sharpening got done? I have 3 spears and one dagger, so after that "unknown" works again ;-)

Thora Grimmsdottir |

Thora quietly inspects the prayer then stands up straight.
"Torag-God, bless this hall," she whispers, translating into Common. Her voice gains both strength and volume as she reads. "Our forge be hot, our weapons be sharp. Torag-God, bless our families. Our children be well, our lives be long. Torag-God, bless our community! Our people be strong, our stone be hard. Torag-God, bless this hall!"
Then she turns around looks at the group with a satisfied smile.

GM SpiderBeard |

Haha, sorry. Should have specified. You've had several hours. You can sharpen everything.
Thora's voice raises as she finishes the prayer to her God, translating from her native dwarven. As she turns to the group and smiles, a burst of white light issues forth from the altar, temporarily blinding the group. Once you regain your vision, the temple has gained a certain luster and brightness to it that was missing. The lettering on the walls is stark and proud, and the smell of death is gone.
On the outside, while Sarkast sharpens his dagger, he feels a strong thrum from beneath him, and the outside of the temple gains a bright grey lustre.
Everyone - including Sarkast and Jinxx on the outside - is under the effects of a Bless spell for 24 hours. +1 attack, +1 morale save vs fear.

Sarkast |

Even though he does not hear Thora's words, Sarkast feels the power of her god returning to the temple. He smiles to know that good has been done, and prepares to descend from the roof when the party is ready to resume travel.

Ayesha Jalal |

Ayesha smiled as the blessing of Torag filled the small temple. This felt right. Good, even. She looked over at Horgus to see his reaction. As much of a puffed up poppinjay as he acted, he seemed to have a desire, or maybe even a need, to restore this place.

GM SpiderBeard |

Let me know if you have any other business at the temple before the party picks up and starts heading down the south passageway.
You're starting to feel weak and a little dizzy. A headache has developed and you've noticed a slight tremor in your hands.

Ayesha Jalal |

"Merui, perhaps when we have a moment, you can show me how to wield this scimitar in battle. I learned to dance with it, and it is the only memento I have of...well, that is unimportant now. The important thing is that I really have no combat training. I make do with what little magics I have and the occasional poke with my kukri, which is easier to wield, though of minor use against things like that spider."

GM SpiderBeard |

The group gather themselves outside of the temple and strike southwards, following the long, winding tunnel. Your pace is slow due to Anevia's hobbled leg and Aravashnial's careful movements, his hand sometimes clinging like a vice to Ayesha's shoulder.
The cavern begins to slowly rise, which Horgus is the first to notice. He proudly announces it to a scoff from Anevia, but he seems to be right as you continue climbing upwards.
After a good half hour or walking, the cavern abruptly opens up. Meriui stands at the entrance to the cavern, his light showing around 20' into the area.

Meriui bin Mircea |

That's not normal. A reaction to the true life-or-death struggles? I guess I'll see if it settles down after some recovery time.
"Yes, Ayesha, I would be happy to help you learn more about using a scimitar. The basics are pretty obvious. You hold the part that's more comfortable to hold, and you try to force the sharp edge through your opponent's form. Everything after that is specific technique, confidence, and a desire to survive."
After it becomes obvious that Gwerm is right about the path angling upwards, "Well, Horgus, that's twice you've been right that counted. The first was in the temple, about what needed to be done. We're all glad that you're trying to help, I believe."
When the cavern opens up, and the light fades into the distance, Meriui pauses, and tries to see what lies at, or just beyond, the edge of the light.

GM SpiderBeard |

Horgus seems pleased at the words of others, enough so that he doesn't actually say anything in response.
The group crowd near the entrance of the cave and heads peer in, carefully listening or scanning for any sign of life.

Anevia: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Horgus: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Thora is the first to spot it, her keen dwarven eyes picking out strange shapes sticking out from the ceiling just beyond the edge of the light.

Sarkast |

Sarkast raises his spear and throws on Anevia's mark.
Attack, +1 for Bless: 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 2 + 1 = 15 Damage, +1 from whetstone: 1d6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 1 = 9
Range increment with the spear thrower is 40'. If he gets a chance to take a move action, he loads his second spear into the thrower.

GM SpiderBeard |

The creature opens up to reveal a strange, octopus-like body and a hideous, circular maw ringed with teeth. Two more join it, soaring in from the darkness!
This creature is known as a darkmantle, which awaits on the ceilings of caverns before plunging down to devour prey. They can change colour to match their surroundings and are normally very hard to spot. They devour prey by wrapping them up and squeezing the life out of them.
Darkmantles: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Rowena: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Thora: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Meriui: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Ayesha: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Ronan: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Sarkast: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Anevia: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Aravashnial (blind): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Horgus: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (12) - 1 = 11
Sarkast is up, again! You know of the two coming in from sounds and Thora's vision, but only the darkmantle in the front can be seen by the party right now. It is 58 feet away. I will use square, circle, triangle to mark the darkmantles.

Sarkast |

Was the first throw a surprise round, and therefore only a single action, or was Sarkast able to slot his spear into the thrower? I'm assuming not, so if he did, negate the -2 range penalty below.
Also, is there any chance that first hit caught it flat-footed? If so, I should get another 1d6 damage for sneak attack. I completely forgot that before. Just in case, here is the roll:
Sneak attack for first hit: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Sarkast hurries to throw a second spear as the creatures approach, and pulls out his last one to be ready for its arrival. He wonders aloud, "Where have we found ourselves to be beset by enormous insects and flying monsters?"
Attack, Bless, range penalty: 1d20 + 2 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 + 1 - 2 = 21 Damage, whetstone: 1d6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 1 = 9
Crit confirmation, Bless, range penalty: 1d20 + 2 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 + 1 - 2 = 12 Damage, whetstone: 1d6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 1 = 6
Standard action to attack, move action to draw his last spear.

Sarkast |

I just noticed you added the note about it being 58' feet away --- are we back to 10' squares, then? I would have drawn the last spear then readied the attack for when it got close enough to reduce the range penalty if it is that far away.

GM SpiderBeard |

Sorry. Yes, it was a surprise round so no reload. And you need to be within 30' to sneak attack. Moot point though.
Sarkast's spear flies beautifully straight into the mouth of the descending creature, its tentacles to stiff and it plummets to the ground through mid-soar.
Two more fly in from the darkness, and head straight for Meriui in a dead charge, tentacles opening up. However, Meriui manages to batter them back with his shield and the creatures remain at bay.
Attack+charge: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

Looking at the map, I think Meriui is pretty well trapped. No opportunity to 5' forward. No way to retreat without simply exposing everyone else.
"I've never seen anything like these! AMAZING!"
Primary Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Yeah, no need to worry about damage . . ..

Ayesha Jalal |

k. arcana: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
"Darkmantles! They try and squeeze their prey to death. Do not let them get a firm grip on you!" Ayesha hollered as she drew the kukri from her belt. In these close quarters, she did not want the bulk of the scimitar in her way. She murmured a quick chant and cast a pea-sized ball of acid at the creature closest to her. Unfortunately, with all the people pressing in on all sides in the narrow spot in the tunnel, she wasn't able to get a clear shot.
