The idea is a mix of Oriental style games with Steampunk. So Pandas and Pistols, Kitsune and Clockwork, Ghosts and Grease.

Just looking for interest.

Interest. I'm torn between my Wu Jen conversion (if you choose to allow it) and a Magus who is a Samurai (the social status, not the class).

Lantern Lodge

I don't have a copy of OA handy, so can you tell me what the Taboos are again. I am trying to find my digital copy but it may take a while. Once I find it I will let you know if I will allow it, and if not I will make a version I will allow.

A taboo is something that a Wu Jen is not to do. The player chooses them (subject to GM approval), and they can be things like not eating meat, limits on how much they can own, not wearing a certain color, not bathing, and so on.

I would so totally be interested in this, though it will be difficult to pick just a single character concept to go with. What sort of races/classes/etc are you thinking of offering?

*Snarls at doppelganger*

I'll probably end up as a Magus.

Dotting. No idea what I'd make though...

Silver Crusade

Idea was intriguing, so just had to come up with something to stretch creative juices

5 minute background:
Mystic jewel falls from the heavens, into the path of a wandering toymaker named Chao Petto (okay, not a very good play on an oriental version of ghepetto, but hey it's a quick background). Not comprehending the true power of the jewel, he put it into one of his clockwork creations, a small panda. Suddenly, the panda came to life. It seemed his creation had gained a level of sentience from the jewel. Chao Petto decided to teach his newfound creation.

A year later the young panda (need to think of a name) had gained a great deal of understanding of this newfound world. One day, while selling some of his toys in a city, Chao Petto awoke the panda from it's mystic slumber, and told him a story, that they had attracted attention from a group most foul, and that he must run. The panda, having no where else to go, ran off into the night. The panda had learned to control a portion of the jewel's power, and with it's strength, managed to escape. Now the panda is on the run, with few places open to it, it's pursurer's after the jewel within.

Not my best work but came up with fast just to try out an idea. Stat-wise would probably base it with the race creation rules from the Advanced Races Guide using construct as a base and going from there. Probably stat it as a Sorcerer, representing gaining control over the mystic jewel as it's power source. Could also try cleric, as it could be a divine jewel as well. The spells from either class would be a manifestation of the jewel's power, though in the case of some spells I could see clockwork gears whirring for it. Would probably take abit of work to make, but not even sure this would be a submission.

I'm interested for sure, not sure what I'd play bt i'll look through OA and the pathfinder stuff to see what i can conjure up

I know the wizard is replaced by the wu jen in OA, but i would love to play a spellslinger elementalist. I think it would fit in well with the theme and would be pretty cool.

What level, classes, and races? How many points? If tengu are allowed:

I'd like to submit Baoyu Fen, mercenary tengu and weapon-lover. (Gunslinger, possible multiclass into Monk or Fighter.)

Brief background:
Baoyu Fen left his roost early to wander the lands as a mercenary, often taking jobs guarding caravans or serving in border skirmishes, relishing every chance to learn new fighting styles from various lands.

Eventually he picked up the way of firearms, and became enthralled by the weapons, eventually becoming a marked duelist and scout.

Aww, don't be like that... We just both found the most awesome amazing avatar available and picked it! Besides, I'll be using an avatar appropriate to my character via alias if this goes forward.

Silver Crusade

Done, I am SOOO in this game .... Well I hope ... AA better Question is...Whats allowed?

Been thinking of Either Gunslinger/ synthesist ( Snake themed ) or Gunslinger/ Spellslinger /Sorc ( Kitsune themed) OR Monk/ Soc/ DD ( Dragon themed of course .... Think Lightning Dragon)

I submit

Renzo Agasha:

Renzo was a Phoenix clan prodigy. He excelled in all things his family was known for, and was a skilled elementalist and weapon maker by his 12th birthday. He was afforded many opportunities in the schools of the Phoenix clan, but as he grew through his teens he grew arrogant. He asked his wu jen master if he could travel outside the lands of Rokugen. At first reluctant, his master and his family finally agreed that he could leave their homeland and venture forth.

And he did just that. He traveled west and found incredible things he had never imagined. He contined his studies of the elemental magics, and his love of crafting, but his focus shifted to something that was novel and unbelievable to Renzo... the firearm. He became enamored with it and started to incorporate it with his mystical training. He carried a few back with him on his travel home and has come back to the Phoenix clan no mere Wu jen, but a new breed of mage, a Maho no ite, a spell slinger

He would either be a wu jen, if possible, or a wizard with the spellslinger archtype, and being from the Phoenix clan would specialize in fire magic.

Silver Crusade

lol why do i have a feeling everyone is gonna be a Gun / (Insert Class here?)

Endoralis wrote:

probably because of the steampunk theme haha

I think this game would be very interesting and already it seems that there is great variety in the use of the gun

Silver Crusade

But I didn't make a gunslinger. I made a clockwork panda robot.

Xzaral wrote:

And it's the coolest. :)

I like how the magical stone seems reminiscent of the jade from The Dream of the Red Chamber (where my character's last name comes from).

I don't mind skipping gunslinger and going fighter/monk, if there are lots of guns in the setting and they're cheaper/more readily available, I could just have a couple as weapons.

Silver Crusade

My guy is supposed to be cursed with a Snake demon that is passed down through his family and thus the Syth part ... Or Rouge mercenary Kitsune... Or Unarmed Monk following the path of the mighty Rairyuken martial art.

Lantern Lodge

I have updated the Campaign Info page with allowed Races and Classes. I am still deciding about level and point buy. As for using Oriental Adventures, as I don't actually own the book (besides a digital copy) I won't be using it, I will be using the Dragon Empires stuff from Paizo though.

Lantern Lodge

Also as a little suggestion for character "submissions". If you would like to present a character idea keep it setting neutral, meaning no actual game mechanics. That way I can decide on who is in based off of concept rather than mechanics.

So for a good example:
Hun Li Gon is a samurai who hails from the northern lands of ice and snow. He has trained to endure even the harshest of climates and fight the large snow beasts of the land. He is traveling to the city of Kun Poi to seek a new lord and answers when his most honorable lord Omishu died of an unexplained illness leaving nothing behind.

As for a bad example:
Hun Li Gon is a Samurai/Gunslinger who travels to gain loot and experience. He will be trying to earn enough money to buy a +3 Katana so he can woop some butt. He also loves uses his pistol and grit to pull off some awesome tricks.

Now I am not judging based off of writing skill (though it wont hurt) but I do hope to get players who can convey thoughts without having to resort to the actual game terms and rules. And this also helps since you may not know all of the houserules and options available to you before you are selected to play.

Silver Crusade

Before I get To involved I have to ask Baoyu Fen, Do you think it'd be alright if i include you in my background since we seem to be doing slightly similar things but from different perspectives, I feel it draws characters closer... which is why I ask your permission first

Edit: You know what i'll make it more general and kind of hint at Baoyu Fen (Cause I dunno it seems like a cool combo..Raven and snake)

My character is pretty setting neutral, as most of the OA details can be shifted around to fit into whatever setting you're using. I don't have dragon empires yet (buying it after christmas) so I only have OA to go on.

Perhaps we were friendly rivals that worked on a caravan together? We may have studied a few of the same techniques, but our personal takes on them made us a bit boastful toward one another, always trying to one-up each other, but respecting each other's abilities.

Then we parted ways for whatever reason (seasons and whims change),, and when the campaign starts up it'll be one of those "Oh, it's you" moments, where everyone thinks we're going to kill each other but we embrace as comrades instead.

The intent of the statement is more for others. The characters submitted so far all are fine in this respect.

Interested. This would be my first online RP, so you might have to be a little patent with me.

As for character idea:
Tchzzack, The Tengu Zen Archer (the name is pronounced with two distinct clicking noises the come from the beak, most races pronounce his name as "Theziack")

Tchzzack comes from a school of monks that practice the near dead art of Bow Kata (taken from Equilibrium's Gun Kata or Gun Fu) using a short bow in close combat as most might use a sword. Bow Kata uses statistics, geometry, and physics to generate patterns of firing that are aimed at the most likely place for attacks to be rather than aiming at individuals, and after mastering these patterns they look more like a choreographed dance rather than combat. After having studied the art for 10 years the school dictates that Tchzzack has to complete a journey of enlightenment and having given him no further instructions sent him out into the world.

If I could I would rather play this character as an Oread, I was planing on taking the "stoic and contemplative" to an extreme with the vow of silence (not using the actual vow rules (zen archer already gets rid of still mind)) plus I wanted the bonuses to Str and Wis

Not completely married to this particular character concept, but it's my favourite at the moment. Let me know what you think. (Samsaran Wizard)

Chetna Kamala Udipti:
In this incarnation, the occult mysteries have come only with long study and careful practice for Chetna Kamala Udipti, but she half remembers a time before the smoke and steam of industry, when conjuring flames from the air was as simple for her as a flick of her wrist. Originally an alienist hailing from a large city, Chetna sought to bring balance to others, to mend broken minds as one might mend a broken clock. But in this modern age, as magic and tradition give way to invention and the cold logic of science, depression and despair are all too common, and the effort of healing the minds of others began taking a toll on her own. Now she pursues the arcane arts, grasping at mysteries that came so much easier in past lives, wondering if the difficulty means that she has strayed too far from the inner peace and focus of her past incarnations.

Would you be open to 3pp like SGG's Advanced Options: Alchemists' Discoveries? If so, how about their Loot 4 Less line, such as Pretty, Pretty, Rings? This is just tentative interest, but I think that an alchemist with Spagyric Devices instead of Mutagens would be interesting to play.

Lantern Lodge

3PP is an asking basis, as I would have to have access to the material. Now when it comes to SGG material, I own just about everything (Just missing a couple) and some of it I will allow, others I don't think are appropriate for this style of game.

could I play an Oread?

Lantern Lodge

I just don't think an Oread fits within the setting. Sorry. There are currently 10 choices for races and I am thinking about adding in Hobgoblin and Aasimar since they are mentioned being numerous in the Dragon Empires.

Now I plan on leaving the recruitment open till new years. After that I will announce who is in the game and give you each instructions on the website and more character creation detail. I plan to have 4 to 6 of you, the number depends on the number of submissions and whether I can make up my mind on who to keep.

One last question, what is everyone's opinions on the Words of Power from UM?

Sgmendez wrote:

Honestly? Great concept, terrible implementation. Far too many of the words are a literal 1:1 correlation with a spell, with no other application possible, but are either less powerful or higher level. I had been hoping for something more like the old spell seed mechanic for epic spells, but designed to work for level 1-9 spells, but no such luck.

Pulling out of this one. Will follow progress, though.

Lantern Lodge

OK, so far 1 no for Words unless updated.

Baoyu Fen, if you don't mind me asking. What is the reason for pulling out?

Tentatively interested, though it seems based on the point buy, that this will be a gritty, more steam less fantasy game. Not sure I'm down with that.

If I decide to make a submission, it will possibly be as some sort of temple trained warrior.

I just don't want to tread on other's toes. My concept overlaps with a few of the others. Gun-wielding martial artist, and tengu.

Tell you what, keep me as a back-up. If there is a lot of interest, pick others, but if you still have room I'll gladly stay on. :)

Lantern Lodge

Yeah, I am aiming for more of an intrigue story rather than high fantasy. The use of tech and magic will still be there just as in any Steampunk or KungFu media. I am hoping for for more social interactions with a lot of mystery, while still having awesome fight scenes.

If I might make a suggestion, this seems like the kind of game almost tailor made for the Hero Point System in APG.

I am not saying this doesn't sound like a fun game, I was just surprised at it only being a 15 point buy.

Also,
If possible pick The Maven to play, that's my younger brother who is new to PbPs and is really, really, really, into OA/Dragon Empire stuff.

Lantern Lodge

Don't worry about treading on toes. If there are multiple people with similar concepts it makes having you grouped a little easier. I am also posting thin in the Campaign Info for reference.

So far I have these people interested with their concepts:

  • A.P.P.L.E. - ? Magus or Wu Jen
  • Caelesti - Samsaran Wizard
  • A CR20 Seagull - ??
  • Xzaral - Clockwork Panda Sorcerer
  • The Maven - ? Wu Jen or Spellslinger
  • Baoyu Fen - Tengu Gunslinger/Monk or Gunslinger/Fighter
  • Endoralis - ? Gunslinger/Synthesist, Gunslinger/Spellslinger/Sorc, or Monk/Soc/Dragon Disciple
  • Ancient Orien - ??
  • Cardz5000 - Tengu Zen Archer
  • Fredrik - ??
  • Monkeygod - ??

Sorry if I missed anyone or if I missed on a concept. Just let me know and I will edit you in.

  • Lantern Lodge

As for Hero Points, that is a good idea. And I know exactly how I am going to implement them. It won't be Hero Points but integrated into another variant system I have made for the game.

And to be honest 15 is supposed to be the Standard Fantasy, I think that everyone has just gotten spoiled with the High Fantasy 20.

What level would we start at, btw?

    Lantern Lodge

I am still deciding on that but I am thinking at 5th level. It is a good round level that allows for some builds and ideas to start flourishing.

    Silver Crusade

Hey, the clockwork panda wasn't totally shot down! Having toyed with it abit further (beyond 5 minutes that is), I'd probably go with cleric or oracle over sorc. A jewel from the heavens seems more divine than arcane to me.

For clarification purposes, I am gonna crunch up a spellslinger, I love the concept. Te only reason Wu Jen was even mentioned was because I originally thought we were using Oa and wizards don't exist haha

    Lantern Lodge

Yes, not to spoil or reveal to much Clockwork may be an option.

Oh, OK. I will update the list with your two changes.

    Race

    Liberty's Edge

I am interested in running a tiefling ninja

    Silver Crusade

The idea of an Oriental-style steampunk game sounds like fun. If I may, I would like to submit a character for this as well.

    Xiao Feng:
“A tall, athletically built man with dark skin and a mustache that is about a foot long. He is covered in extensive scars, especially his scalp, which he keeps clean-shaven. He wears an elaborate wide-collared black tunic adorned with characters, bracers, a broad belt encrusted with jewels, and grey loose fitting pants. In true pirate-fashion, Xiao Feng goes barefooted.”

    Height: 6'1” Weight: 195 lbs.
Eyes: Black Hair: Black (mustache; head clean-shaven)

Xiao Feng - human barbarian (savage, urban)/monk (martial artist)

Left for dead after mutineers took his ship, Xiao Feng has been scraping by with what little he earns from the jobs that he takes in the hope of obtaining another vessel so that he can take his revenge on those that abandoned him.

    Lantern Lodge

Glad to see more interest. Added you two to the Campaign Info page.

Sir Frog, I am sorry but Tiefling is not an option in this game. The races that are allowed are listed on the Campaign Info page. And also take note that there may be options that are not revealed yet.

    Silver Crusade

I haven't done his gear (aside from giving him a nine-ringed broadsword) and nor traits, but this is my character so far:
