Arcilde, I appreciate the thought you've put in to help me.

My biggest problem I have with crossbows is they don't allow a str modifier to damage -- which is kinda Gervase's main shtick in combat.

I'm wondering if the best bet is to continue being an archer first on land BUT a primary melee combatant in the water?

Do you want the seaborne +1 trident? It will help with swim checks. What about the mwk longsword? If not, I think we should sell that.

Rayland had a +1 light steel spiked shield. Do you want that instead of your +1 darkwood buckler, Arcilde? If not and Lily doesn't want it, I think we should sell that too.

I have nearly finished updating the main loot sheet. I have also added a separate tab for "major items", proposing ones we keep and ones we sell.

Cells in pink are controversial, or items I think we have to roleplay to get the best value from.

Gilstrom, I propose swapping your shield cloak for a +1 cloak of resistance and selling the former. Whadya think?

GM Rinaldo, here is your complete list of items after the BBEG fight.

Looking over the three in this room, you determine that they have several magical items among them:

The woman carries
* two potions of cure light wounds
* an arcane wand
* four vials of alchemist’s fire
* a magical cloak
* a magical ring

The man has
* an elixir
* a healing potion more powerful than cure light
* a vial of silversheen
* a magical breastplate
* a mwk longsword
* a mwk spiked light steel shield
* a magical cloak

The skum has
* a healing potion similar to the man's
* a magical trident
* a ring with several keys

Is it fair to say there may be a few items on this list we still need to identify? :)

TL/DR: The loot sheet is still a work in progress, but it’s better than it was!

Note: I haven't updated the healing potions

Let me have your feedback and I’ll complete the update.

We can afford to give everyone a +1 cloak of resistance. Gilstrom what weapons/armor/shield do you want?

Then maybe we see how much money we have left over for other stuff??

Luckily, as before Lily doesn't need much in the way of items, some boost to saves would be nice for the cloak is excellent, otherwise I'm saving up for +2 con belt.

Gervase, that list is superceded by this post.

Copy that, GM Rinaldo!

I have finished updating the Main Loot Sheet and the Sell/Keep List of Major Items.

I have made a few assumptions so we can get back to the action quicker, so if I have made some mistakes please let me know.

Being a medium fighting type, Gervase has gotten plenty of benefit from the found treasure. As such, Gervase is happy to forgo any sold loot revenue to help finance Gilstrom's armor/weapons + Lily's con belt.

GM Rinaldo, what we can afford does depend on the value obtained for the ioun stone book (5000+ gp) + celadon treasure (700ish gp) + wizard's spellbook (1600ish gp).

Do you want us to roleplay trying to sell/trade these items in order to get a fair price?

@Lily: I'm hearing you are happy if we can get you a +1 cloak and that con belt, yes?

@Gilstrom: Do you have a wishlist for magic armor/shield/weapons?

@Arcilde: Do you have any high priority items I have missed? I am happy for you to hand-me-down your mwk breastplate and take Rayland's +1 breastplate.

If I am moving too quickly, I am happy to do some downtime roleplay posts and maybe make a few bows to sell/trade.

GM Rinaldo, I also owe you an animal companion roleplay post.

Now that we know the people in the colony can scribe scrolls, Arcilde can retrain Scribe Scroll for Craft Magic Arms and Armor.

She can add +1 to armor in about 4 hours, and +1 to weapons in about 8 hours. After that, she can start adding specific properties. If we have weapons or armor that are already +1, she can improve them at a rate of 3K gp per day.

Arcilde would do better with a buckler instead of a shield, so she could still swing weapons with 2 hands when needed.

OK, Lily. I'll set up a roleplay post soon, or you can start one. and I'll follow.

So, I've never had an animal companion before.

I didn't realize sharks start at small size and grow to medium, meaning Gervase won't be able to ride it -- which was the badass look I had in mind.

Is there a way I can get a riding shark, GM Rinaldo? Or is that too outside the rules/overpowered? I confess I can't see much difference between a large shark and a large wolf -- but as I said, I have no experience with ACs.

Otherwise, I could go for a terrestrial AC -- but I don't want anything too cliche like a wolf or horse *yawn* What about a wolfdog, reskinned as a wolfhound or one of the giant Japanese breeds that can advance to large size? The other option I'm thinking is zebra.

Can I have your input please, GM?

The Midnight Mirror

With as much going on as this AP has, I'm going to choose not to override the existing rules on animal companions. I don't object to a certain amount of reskinning, similar to the PFS rules for it: If the creature you want doesn't have stats, we can potentially agree on a similar creature to use stats from; however, if the create does have stats, use the ones given.

That said, do you own Ultimate Wilderness? The Hammerhead Shark is a listed companion in that book, and it does start medium and become large at 7th level.

On the subject of companions, at 4th level the Dolphin gets its upgrade! Persephone gains Blindsight 120' as well as boosts to her physical stats.

OK, I’ve done some more research on proposed items to buy:

Gilstrom:

Assumes his trident and lance are both masterwork. (I think they are, can Arcilde or Gilstrom confirm?) From Arcilde’s last downtime post, Gilstrom’s breastplate is masterwork.

• Arcilde adds +1 to mwk breastplate for 500gp
• Arcilde adds +1 to BOTH trident AND lance for 2000gp
• Arcilde makes a +1 light steel quickdraw shield (or whatever Gilstrom wants) – full price 1209gp, but Arcilde halves the cost to 604.5gp
• Gilstrom sells his light wooden shield -1.5gp
• Gilstrom takes the +1 cloak of resistance we found in the Ioun Tower

Total Cost = 3103gp

Lily:
• +1 cloak of resistance 1000gp
• +2 belt of mighty constitution 4000gp

Total Cost = 5000gp

Arcilde:
• +1 cloak of resistance 1000gp
Arcilde, do you want to add +1 to the mwk breastplate you made for yourself for 500gp? And then Gervase gets Rayland’s??

Gervase:
• +1 cloak of resistance 1000gp
• Also, Arcilde is the mwk breastplate you were gonna hand down to Gervase standard or agile?

If we have funds left over after disposing of our trade goods, then we see what else we can buy?

The Midnight Mirror

So to be clear: You can't quite shop like you were in Absalom, but go ahead and make your shopping lists and then I will determine what you are able to get. :-)

Obviously, things you or the colonists can craft are no problem, but things you need to buy premade have to run through the "do they have it" check.

Guys, I’m thinking between Arcilde for arms + armor, Alba Divenaar for potions/alchemical stuff and Father Kurvis for scrolls, the main items we are looking for from outsiders are:

❧ 3 x +1 cloaks of protection (if there’s Pathfinders around they should have HEAPS of them to trade for ancient Azlanti artefacts ;)
❧ Lily’s +2 belt of might con
❧ ANOTHER CLW wand (Dull? Maybe. But it’s cheap healing and we have a lot of fighting ahead over 3 levels)

That’s my list of outsider items anyway, GM Rinaldo.

Gervase, I just realized that as a ranger, your Animal Companion functions as your ranger level minus 3; that means that if you go with the Hammerhead, it won't actually become large until Gervase gets to 10th level. Just something to keep in mind.

I am going to sort out Sledge's tricks now.

I believe at Int=1, he gets 3+1 bonus.

I have a question about teaching him to take a rider.

pfsrd20 wrote:
Riding (DC 15) An animal trained to bear a rider knows the tricks come, heel, and stay. Training an animal for riding takes three weeks.

So if he already knows "heel" does that mean in the future I can train him in two more bonus tricks (come + stay) and then I can ride him into combat? (once he's large enough of course)

First week take 10 handle animal (heel DC 15): 10 + 6 = 16 He's a natural study!
Second Week handle animal (attack DC 20): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

Fourth Week handle animal (attack DC 20): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

Sixth Week handle animal (attack DC 20): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21 Stoopid shark!
Seventh Week handle animal (attack any target DC 20): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18 Remember, praise any improvement - no matter how small ...
Eighth Week handle animal (attack any target DC 20): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Auto-succeed bonus trick, which takes no time = Guard Yay! Graduation from Year 1 of Shark School!

The Midnight Mirror

So the "riding" special purpose is a single training DC, but accounts for three tricks in one go (come, heel, stay).

Riding a creature does not in itself require the creature have any specific tricks, but only that it be suitable as a mount. With a specialized saddle, I have no problem with a shark as a mount, once it is large sized.

I find it VERY amusing that the trick it took you longest to train was "attack". I am guessing he doesn't like being told what to bite.

Still waiting for your shopping / sales list. Also, Arcilde has lots of crafting time, and materials for weapons/armor are generally available, so we can nail down exactly what she makes for everyone.

Just FYI, Dorothy (Arcilde) is attending a conference this week with her team at work, so her schedule will be a little weird. I am not certain when she'll get a chance to catch up and post, so I am not worried about trying to push forward. I still need to read the next chapter anyway ... ;-)

Also, for campaign convenience, I am willing to allow Arcilde (now that she can make magic items) to resize magical weapons and armor that you acquire between small and medium. That means that if Gilstrom wants the seaborne trident, you can change it to small. However, if you do that, then it would take another crafting to make it medium again for Gervase later.

You already pre-ordered one wand of CLW, are you wanting a second? I think that's reasonable.

I'll say that they would have brought a single cloak of protection, but not three. You can pre-order more for the next time around, or just wait.

Belts/Headbands of stat boost are a little more esoteric, so they wouldn't have brought those on spec.

The Midnight Mirror

So, first off: I actually changed the boss skum's weapon into a trident from what it originally was because Gervase and Gilstrom both use a trident already -- I sort of assumed one of you would want it. :-O (That is also part of why I said Arcilde could resize magic weapons...)

- - - -

When you go to sell things to the traders, they are a bit taken aback by the quantity of magic and the ancient tomes. They can't just give you full value for the ioun stone books because they don't know who they will be able to see it to, or for how much. They agree to take it on consignment for the value of the Belt of CON you want; if they can sell it before their next trip out, they will bring you the belt. If they make enough profit from it, they will also bring you the remainder of the money.

Everything else they feel confident enough in taking. Since the majority of what you are spending is in materials for Arcilde to craft with, they are able to barter most of it and provide a small amount of cash equivalent.

That means you are 1000gp short of your plan. Figure out where you want to take that back from.

- - - -

Finally, Gervase: you have mentioned Pathfinders and Aspis a few times. Unless you are actually a Pathfinder or Aspis member, you wouldn't really know that much about them. Playing PFS gives us a skewed feeling for their pervasiveness in the world. They are known, but only people who deal with them regularly know a lot about them. (I mention this because it is actually relevant if a PC is a Pathfinder or Aspis member, and nobody included that in their backgrounds.)

That’s cool that you changed the skum’s weapon into something you thought we would prefer. (A battle axe would have been best! :)

Here’s a couple of points I find interesting:

• A spear is mechanically superior to a trident in all ways, except for weight.

One could argue a trident is more ‘thematically suitable,’ but a spear-fisherwoman might disagree ;)

• I think it’s the seaborne quality that is the main benefit (and it DOES help)

Gilstrom has Persephone. Lily has the ring of swimming. Gervase has a reasonable swim modifier. I think the seaborne quality would be best in Arcilde’s hands, but if it doesn’t suit her thematically, no worries! We’ll sort something out :)

♆ ♆ ♆

GM Rinaldo, the Pathfinder/Aspis thing was really just flavor:

In her backstory Gervase helped sail a tiny warship from Andoran to the Mwangi.

Given the Eagle Knights association with the PFS, and Magnimar being the “last port of civilised call” before the Shackles/Mwangi, I thought it reasonable she might have been aware of the PF/Aspis rivalry in that city, as a part of the pre-shore leave briefing by her supervisor.

Similarly, there is a rumor running through the game about a villager being a secret Pathfinder (no idea if it’s true or not), which I think is an interesting sub-plot – even just for comedic value. In gameplay if I’d gotten a bite with my PF hook, Gervase may have tried to pressure the trader to tell her more about the ‘secrit Passfinder.’

But if you’re uncomfortable with this, no worries I’ll drop it.

$ $ $:

I think everything you say about the trade makes sense and is fair. Thank-you for that.

OK, so we owe you 1000gp.

Guys, I propose taking this from:

• Keeping Lily’s chain shirt as just masterwork and NOT +1 (500 gp)
• Keeping Gervase’s breastplate as mwk (originally Arcilde’s) and NOT +1 (500 gp)

So, I did some reading, and both sharks and dolphins can survive for short periods in fresh water, but they have to work much harder to swim due to less bouyancy, and their skin starts to suffer, leading to infections and illness. If you take them into fresh water areas, I'll probably impose some penalties like:
* reduced swim speed
* potential to become fatigued if they exert themselves (such as in combat) for more than a few rounds
* Fort saves to avoid negative conditions after some number of hours (probably 6 or 12), becoming more difficult and more severe as time passes

Also Crass-pics Conglomerate ~ Aspis Consortium (I know, it's never a good gag if you have to explain it ...)

I was tossing up using AspiC Consortium -- don't think it would have been any better ...

I just always go for "Ass Pits" myself.

The Midnight Mirror

"New message" indicators have been a bit wonky, and Arcilde didn't realize things were happening. I mentioned it to her and she will respond when she can today. Sorry about the delay, but I want everyone to have a chance to speak up about where they want to be and any preparations they are taking.

The Midnight Mirror

Once again, apologies for the delay -- we've begun house hunting, and much of my "free time" during the work day is getting taken up by talking to the real estate agent and related errands. Should be able to post something this evening or tomorrow.

Work has been a madhouse again today. It's gotta settle down soon.

I'll get a post up inside the next 6 hours.

The Midnight Mirror

OK guys, time to chat.

Dorothy and I had a long talk last night, and for a variety of reasons, she's really not enjoying the game. It's a combination of the PbP format, how this particular adventure plays, and her own lack of time in the day to check in and participate. It's leaving her feeling like it is more of an obligation than it is fun.

So she's stepping out, and we need to decide if and how to proceed. What do you guys think? Carry on with three and possibly add NPC support? Try to find another player? Shelf this one for now?

I'm enjoying this game and love the group (Gilstrom is a hard character to get in to but that my own challenge) and I'd be happy to go with three or find a fourth.

I'm still in and having fun. Wouldn't mind either NPC or a newbie recruit.

I love this game!

I'm sorry Dorothy feels the way she does -- but totally understand it.

I vote for a new recruit. Perhaps a private invite to someone one of us knows?

Are you still having fun with the game, GM Rinaldo?

The Midnight Mirror

I got a little overworked during the recent online convention, playing and GMing in the specials as well as regular scenarios. I've got my schedule back to "normal" now, so I think I am good to continue.

Does anyone know someone you'd like to invite?

Lemme bug a couple of friends of mine I've been getting into PbP games.
