Ambrose is Fatigued.
Roughly a day and a half after the storm began, and as it finally began to settle down, the Man's Promise shook as a loud sound could be heard from below. After a few more moments, your minds caught up to your bodies, and you realized that your ship wasn't moving.
"Captain! She's run aground!" one of the sailors by the fore of the ship called, and the officers hurried forward. The dawn light provided only the smallest bit of visibility, but you could see the edges of some kind of island - or at least very large rock - down ahead of you.
"All right, who's worked on fixing vessels!?" Mr. Plugg bellowed, glancing over the crew.
DC 15 Craft (Ships) or Profession (Engineering) to ascertain the state of the ship.
Lucas di Viespea |
Um, if you're willing to allow the actual Knowledge (Engineering) skill, I can take a stab at it...
Kn(Eng): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Ugh, that's a rotten roll... :-\
Lucas peers over the rail, grimacing. "Looks bad," he says in a noncommittal voice.
Like when the mechanic is "showing" you something under the hood of your car and you don't know what on earth he's talking about.
Lieutenant Ambrose Jeggare |
It looks like none of us are trained in those skills. If they're allowed untrained, I'll go ahead and throw a roll out, otherwise, just assume we all fail?
Craft (ships): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Lucas di Viespea |
If that's what the book says that's what it says; it simply strikes me as a case where they split the hairs way the hell too fine. Either way, that roll of mine wasn't helping anything...
Atsadi Tonga |
"I don't know a thing." Atsadi grumbles, leaning against the railing and spitting into the waves.
GM Rednal |
I agree that expecting specific craft checks may be a bit much. *Cough* Unless you've got, like, a campaign system oriented around it and people KNOW someone in the party should be taking it.
Eventually, Mr. Plugg pointed to two other members of the crew and sent them down to check on the ship. A shout from the deck drew his attention a moment later.
"Ah, sir... the water barrel's burst." one of the men said. Plugg spat to the side, then looked over to you. "Right, then. If you're not helping with the ship, then you're gonna help with our supplies. Take the cutter and a few barrels, find water and supplies. And make it snappy, 'less you wanna stay here until you die." As he spoke, the sky was slowly continuing to lighten, revealing what looked to be a large island of some kind that the ship had run aground on.
Lieutenant Ambrose Jeggare |
With weary eyes, Ambrose looks out at the island. He hadn't had a proper night's sleep in some time, and was not looking forward to going out without the chance to prepare his spells properly, but the chance to get away from Plugg and regroup with his fellow mutineers-to-be was worth taking. "Atsadi, Lucas, with me then. We could use a fourth as well."
Any chance we can bring along another friendly NPC? Or might we get saddled with an unfriendly that might meet their untimely end a little early?
Atsadi Tonga |
With a shrug, the tribesman puts on his armor and moves up next to Ambrose. "Sure, sure. Let's go look for something fresh. Maybe find some meat, eh?
Turning his attention to Plugg, he folds his arms. "Any chance we could take Cog or Rosie with us, Captain?"
Lucas di Viespea |
Lucas went to ready the launch. As he did, he called over his shoulder, "Ain't a terrible idea. That much sooner we come back with supplies, that mch sooner we get where we're goin'."
GM Rednal |
"Handle it yourselves." Mr. Plugg snapped. "We've got a limited amount of hands and you don't need any more. The ship does."
With that, you were soon off to launch, but it quickly became clear that there was no safe place to land anywhere on this part of the island, nor anywhere to what looked like the west... although a landing spot might appear if you continued around in that direction. For now, at least, the eastern side looked easier to traverse.
Lieutenant Ambrose Jeggare |
As they approach the island, Ambrose scans for signs that might lead them to what they are searching for. Raised points of elevation were nearly a sure sign of there being a river or tributary, and shallow water would be good for fishing. "I see no signs of habitation from here, but I have heard many tales of cannibals and tribes head-hunters living on islands like these. We should make camp as soon as possible; we are in no condition to fight teeming hordes of natives."
Lucas di Viespea |
A better captain than your sorry ass wouldn't have lost anyone, Lucas sneers inside his head. Outwardly, he simply shrugs it off.
As they make their way down the coastline, Lucas growls, "I just about want a hostile native tribe right now. I'm damn near at the point where every word out of Plugg's mouth makes my stabbin' hand itchy," he says, as he surveys the island looking for a place to land the boat.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Atsadi Tonga |
"We can keelhaul him soon enough. Show him a bit of Besmara's mercy when we chuck his irritating ass into the sea."
Glancing at Ambrose and Lucas, he shrugs. "We can look for high ground..let's move quietly and stay aware then. If we meet any head-hunting tribes, then I plan on getting their heads first."
Lieutenant Ambrose Jeggare |
"Very well," Ambrose says. "We do not have time to make a full survey of the island for the best landing. It appears the east offers the best chance for now."
Atsadi Tonga |
Agreed, let's find the fastest route and get off this island."
