Tynan moves his way carefully down the stone corridor, passing a side hall, before arriving at a four-way intersection. He marks the passages to the left as the likely direction of the feminine footsteps, the light of Mortimer's ioun torch, Solrisa's shield, and Raella's newly gifted second ioun torch now bleeding forth.
As you turn to survey the others, you see something you missed on your initial pass down the hallway. On either side of Ascaria, there appear to be slightly inset panels in the walls.

As Solrisa tries to push past Tynan, the group can hear faint swishes from earlier in the hallway. Ascaria is greeted by the sudden appearance of three cloaked birdmen, one to each side of him, newly revealed from behind secret doors. Both have crossbows slung over their shoulders, and rapiers in their raptor-like talons. They flick their heads sideways in very avian fashion, examining the gnome predatorily.
One of them flicks its blade, as if testing the gnome's shell. Its metal cuts across the gnome's shoulder easily enough.

In Ascaria's very own voice, the birdman speaks. "How's that?"
Pillette draws her shortsword, quickly trying to discourage further attacks against the helpless gnome.

Quickly, Rae grabs Ascaria, switching places with him to better face down the vicious birdbrains.
She grins at the closest Crow to her left, "Now, let's see you try pecking on someone your size, birdman..."

Rae, enraged at their attack on the poor little gnome, begins to shake so much she appears only partially within the material plane. Perhaps it shocks her as well, for her blade misses the creature she was aiming at, dinging off the wall in the close quarters instead.

Raella subverts the birdmen in their picking on the gnome, taking his place, her own feathers ruffling. The Canary works his way deeper into the mine, startled into flight.
The birdmen size up this new, bigger creature, and press their attack.

The sudden appearance of an armed hummingbird between them seems to throw them off their bladework. Both miss hitting Raella, stepping back, and disappearing behind swiftly-closing secret doors. Behind the walls, you can hear them still shifting about, calling out to each other, in various, familiar voices.
Raella: "Peck your eyes out, we will..."
Solrisa: "I could pull out your tongue, if you would wear it..."
Tynan: "You should use the torch, and set yourself on fire..."
Mortimer: "No, really!! Set yourselves on fire..."
The sounds of the voices fade to either side.

Although discombobulated by the creatures' uses of their voices and Rae's phase, Mortimer pushes aside his confusion for the time being and looks down the hall to the East, wondering where it leads.
"Rae -- Pill, try opening the secret next to you to the East."
Assuming the strange bird things are moving through hallways beyond the secret door, he moves down the Eastern corridor next to him and listens for a strange creature, hoping to gain flank if the corridors join.

Mortimer fans out, hoping to intercept flight patterns. Solrisa readies to clip a wing if she's able. Tynan joins Raella and Pillette, as Raella opens the recently-closed secret door to the east.

Finding something shiny standing in the hallway, two birdmen emerge in front of Solrisa. One of them fires a crossbow, while the other swoops in, only to be cut down in one slash of the sculptor's scalpel. A piercing screech fades as the creature falls to the ground.

Tynan passes Raella through the re-opened secret door, his blade narrowly missing the creature's hood. Pillette moves up the corridor, making sure she can keep her eyes on both Ascaria and Mortimer, sheathing her shortsword along the way. Raella passes Tynan through the re-opened secret door, her foot planting beautifully along the wall, up and around the birdman. Gaining flank with Tynan, Raella ends the creature in a backhand slash. Ascaria stands his ground. Healing is the least he can do.
The corridors alight in noise. It sounds like you are surrounded. Moments later, it becomes clear that you are. Birdmen appear from all sides, and bolts and blades begin their deadly work.
From Ascaria's vantage point, two birdmen appear at the end of the north and west corridors. Two bolts fire off, sinking deep into gnomic flesh. The birdman to the west taunts Ascaria in a familiar voice.
Solrisa: "How's that?"

Two birdmen break from their perches to the north of Solrisa, firing their crossbows in succession. They bob their heads in opposition to each other's movements, watching the shiny girl, and waiting.

Ascaria gets pummeled by crossbow bolts. He eyes the bolts sticking out of his body and considers bandages to staunch the bleeding. Instead he casts Cure Moderate Wounds to knit his injuries.

Tynan moves around the corner in time to see Mort hurtle out of the side corridor, and snap the birdman's neck. Spying Ascaria on the ground, Tynan moves up and attempts to bind his wounds.

Mortimer leaps to the gnome's rescue, ending the threat at near for now. Tynan tries to calm the chaos, struggling to find the rapier's recent entry hole. Solrisa migrates north, beheading the birdman bobbing in front of her.
The flaxen maiden sees the northern birdman drop its crossbow, drawing a rapier and moving into flank, with a birdman that steps from its hiding place just behind her.

Ascaria can't bring himself to stop bleeding. Pillette ducks beneath the giant, uncorking a vial and parting the gnome's lips in order to empty it down his throat. For all Ascaria's sputtering, the process is a painfully slow one, getting the gnome to drink, now of all times.
Raella looks down at her newly bleeding arm, the bolt protruding from it an unwelcome addition to her anatomy. She charges at the birdman down the hall, aiming to repay its 'kindness'. It's the last thing the creature sees before its shoulder parts from its chest.

Mortimer's advancing through the intersection rewards him with a readied crossbow from his left.

Mortimer finds himself with a bird in hand, cuffing him dead. Tynan dodges behind the giant, taking a left at the intersection and swinging wide on the birdman getting ready to reload its crossbow. Solrisa ends one of the two turtledoves, backing up carefully over its slain form.
The birdman closest to Solrisa takes wing, disappearing through the eastern corridor. The rustling of its feathers grows more distant, but its bird-like calls take on an air of urgency.
Pillette finishes her pour, then moves to the intersection, keeping an eye on both Tynan and Mortimer. Raella retreats to the second intersection, keeping an eye on Tynan, Pillette, and Solrisa, and readying a swing on any new birdman announcing itself behind more secret doors.

With the birdman dead at his feet, Tynan can just make out that the corridor branches to the north and the south, but can see precious little down the hallways. Suspecting more will soon make an appearance, he presses himself into the shadows, hoping to conceal himself from any others that might pass by. Once hidden, he listens intently for sounds down the corridors.
