The bells atop the Temple of Erastil toll their midday song, echoing throughout the quiet town of Kassen. As the peals begin to fade, the first of the townsfolk make their way into the square, dressed in black, as if attending a funeral. They slowly fill the square, moving quietly across the cold, hard ground, their eyes downcast and mournful. After a few moments a murmur passes through the crowd as it slowly parts to let Mayor Uptal through. He leads the way with a tarnished silver lantern. Behind him, an old pony drags a cart laden with backpacks and supplies.
Once he reaches the center of the crowd, Mayor Uptal stops and calls out to the assembled townsfolk. “Once again the winter winds blow through the Fangwood, marking the end of another harvest. There are wolves in the woods, howling at our walls, and serpents in our shadows, waiting to strike. Just as it was one hundred and seventy-four years ago, when Kassen himself left these walls to protect us, so it is today. Where are the heroes? Where are the brave folk that will venture out to Kassen’s tomb and retrieve the flame to keep this community safe for another winter?”
Hi there,
I'd like to develop my skills as a GM, so I have decided to run this small adventure. I am a first time GM, and that's why I'm trying to see how running a module goes. Maybe an AP someday, but we'll see how things go.
Recruitment will be open until 5/28, and characters will be selected by 5/30. I'm looking for 4, may consider a fifth if I have a hard time deciding.
Character Races: Preferably core races. It's assumed that your character has grown up in the town of Kassen, and I see the core races as being more likely. If you'd like to play a non-core race, then give a good background explanation as to why you're there.
Classes: No summoner, ninja, samurai, vigilante, or occult.
Starting wealth/gear: Don't worry about it. All you need is your weapon(s) and armor (or spellcasting components).
Background info: 4 things. How did your character come to be in Kassen? What does your character do for a living? Why did they pursue the adventurer style/interests/class they did? And how would they respond to Mayor Uptal's question, as given above?
Questions may be answered IC, as though introducing yourselves to your fellow PC's or OOC.
Traits: Pick 2.
Posting: Lets try for daily and see how that goes. Weekends are busy, so if people are posting then, then we'll keep things going.
No 3PP: Nothing against it, but not everyone has it.
I typically check posts in the morning, and as the day goes on so that I can post in the evening. I work afternoons, so I'll be pretty quiet then.
My goal is to have a fun game. If it's not fun, why are we doing it? I'm under no illusions that there's more experienced GM's than me out there, and if, as the game goes on, you have tips or feedback, feel free to PM me. Always looking to improve.
Any questions, or anything I didn't cover, please let me know.

Belasara Vileux |

I've never played Crypt of the Everflame before, but I've wanted to for a while now. I'd love to put forth Belasara here for consideration. I think I've addressed everything you're looking for in the background except for the last question. I wasn't sure if you were looking for a sort of roleplay sample using that as a prompt, but if so, I'll be happy to send you one.
Please let me know what you think.
Thanks!

Regarding the response, that is me looking for a small sample of RP. I don't want the thread to get bogged by it, but I do want to see quick blurb of how your character speaks/acts. Nothing extravagant, just how they step forward and say "I'm here."

GM Mainer |

Hmmm...
Perhaps a gnome nature oracle. This character would have a wolf as a bonded mount.
How high level do you think the game will go?
I'm expecting everyone to hit level two by the end of this module. I'll be following the medium xp table for this.
If this game goes well and if I'm able to find a proper game/life balance, then I am looking to continue the adventures.

Peet |

Okay, my gnome nature oracle is coming together.
Will you be using the background skills variant from Pathfinder Unchained? It seems most of the games I am in are using it now. It would allow me to fit a craft skill in there.

With the length of the adventure, it won't make too big a difference one way or another, so sure, go ahead and use background skills.

Sir Bleeparolo the Deft |

May I present for your consideration Sir Bleeparolo The Deft. Gnome Oracle of the Nature mystery.
- How did your character come to be in Kassen? The Papolyxi family lives in the Fangwood nearby.
- What does your character do for a living? The Papolyxi family works in metal and wood, primarily to make weapons. Not being part of the weaponcrafter's guild, however, means they don't get the "good contracts" and have to settle for making things for hunters and poorer citizens. They tend to gather scrap metal from Kassen and try to use that metal in their weapon-making.
- Why did they pursue the adventurer style/interests/class they did? Bleeparolo has always been fascinated by the stories his father told him about the ancient gnomish order of The Knights of the Black Bough. He felt an instant connection to those knights. Perhaps it was because of the shadowy figures that haunted his dreams, riding through the forest on the backs of wolves, lances held high. Sometimes he would see a pale figure in the moonlight of a gnome on wolf-back. His parents thought this was the product of Bleeparolo's imagination, but Bleeparolo knew somehow his destiny lay among the Knights of the Black Bough.
- And how would they respond to Mayor Uptal's question? ("Where are the heroes? Where are the brave folk that will venture out to Kassen’s tomb and retrieve the flame to keep this community safe for another winter?”) A gnome in armor rides forth on a white wolf, with a lance upraised. His armor looks like it has been cobbled together out of scraps of metal, and his shield is green with a black fir tree as its charge. "Here, I say!" says the gnome. "Here we stand, because the Knights of the Black Bough are not gone from the world as long as one remains! It is our honor and duty to answer the call!"
I have to do a more elaborate background but this is the basics. Bleeparolo is a devotee of Irori who believes his powers stem from a transcendental harmony with the natural world. His animal companion is a sort of "spirit guide" to him.
He rides a wolf as a mount and uses a lance when charging. He is not proficient with the lance, but he has the "Master Tinker" alternate racial trait that allows him to wield any weapon he has made himself. He has craft (weaponsmith) and uses a lance he has made. Hope that's all right.

GM Mainer |

I assume despite saying not to worry about wealth and just get your weapons/armour that you don't want a level 1 with plate mail?
Yes. I'm not to particular about what you start with, but please don't let your weapon and armor cost exceed the average starting wealth your class could have.
Edit: changed to average starting wealth. Stick with that. If I see a need, we'll see about increasing.

The Pale King |

Thank you for the clarification!
I am trying to decide how much my character is influenced by his mother's works as a Hedgewitch and how much he has gone his own direction in loving the idea of adventure and glory. I see being a Witch or Shaman himself on the far end of the first and an Arcane Bloodrager or Ranger on the far end of the later, with say Alchemist somewhere inbetween.

"I beg your pardon?" says the gnome on wolf-back, frowning. "Was there a specific gnome's arse you were referring to?"
"Bahaha! Never you my friend, Sir Bleeparolo!" Fonzy belches in laughter. Slightly embarrassed at forgetting he was in the company of the gnome. "All your riding has made that target much too large to be a challenge." Attempting to turn that frown upside down.

what profile should i pm the gamemaster or something if so tell me
@ Ameraaaaaa:
It seems fairly clear that you are new to the boards and to PbP games.
Your default alias on the boards is "Ameraaaaaa" but you can have many aliases. This way you can make an alias for each character that you play and have a different picture and profile for each. Click on my name to see what I mean. You will be able to see Sir Bleeparolo's profile.
Here's what you do:
1. At the very top of the page there are a bunch of links. One of them is "My Account." Click that link.
2. On your account page there is a variety of stuff. It is arranged into two columns. The left-hand column should have "Personal Settings," then "Messageboard Settings," and then "Messageboard Aliases." The Messageboard Aliases thing is the one you want. At the bottom of that box is a button that says "Create New Alias." Click that.
3. You get a page for setting up the alias. At the top there is a box where you can put the name. It will generate a name based on your account but just get rid of that and type the name you want. In the middle is a box that lets you select a picture for the alias. Paizo has a couple thousand to choose from. And then when you are done click "Save" at the bottom.
4. You will get sent back to the account page. You should now have two aliases listed: "Ameraaaaaa" and your new one. If you want to change the picture of the alias, you can click "Edit" and you will go back to the setup page for the alias. You can change the name too until you make 10 posts with that alias. Then you are stuck with the name.
5. When you are on your account homepage (which you can get to by clicking on your name at the very top of the page) there is a tab that says "Aliases." Click that to get a list of the aliases you have. Click on the new alias you just made.
6. Now you are at a page for that specific Alias. The first tab should say "Profile." Click that. It should now say "You have not created a profile." and just below that "click here to create a profile." Click that.
7. Now you get something that looks like a questionnaire with a whole bunch of boxes to fill in. You can leave some blank if you want. The big box at the bottom is where you put most of your stuff, like a character sheet.
8. Start filling that in. I should warn you though that if you take too long you will lose your data so you should click save a lot. You can edit this as often as you want.
9. Once you have saved it you can look at the profile by clicking on the character's name. So do that and see how it looks, and you can keep editing after that. Once you are satisfied, you are done! If you want to make a post as that character, there is a box under the one where you write your text that says "Post As". If you click that your new character should now be on the list.
I know there are a lot of steps here but it's simpler than it sounds.
===================================
A few other things you should consider.
10. It's good to know how to format your text. You can put things in bold or italics or as an Out-of-character comment. You can find out how to do all those things by clicking the "How to format your text" button below where you type stuff in.
11. You should definitely read this Guide to PbP gaming. It is really helpful.
12. Once you think you have got that stuff down, you can read this Advanced Guide for some more useful tips.
Good luck and happy gaming!

Should we both be chosen I think Fonzy and Sir Bleepy could have a great dynamic and entwined back story. You and my father have traded weapons for food and other goods for many years, meaning you've known Fonzy since he was a baby. He respects you highly, but treats you as an uncle of sorts. Any of that could be adjusted if you were interested. Except calling you Bleepy, that's gotta stay.
Edit: Maybe Fonzy is only permitted to go as a tag along with you so his father feels more comfortable allowing his son to go into the crypt.

Something to consider is that the journey to the crypt is very ceremonial, and is looked at as a "coming of age" tradition in the town of Kassen. You're aware of this, and have possibly had friends or siblings who have made this journey before (normally it's town elders). This is supposed to be your "big adventure" before you settle down and make the transition to adult life, and while you suspect the town elders may have some "surprises" set up for you, you can be relatively confident that this will be a safe, if not fun, adventure.
Please ignore the evil laughter in the background. :)
