Season of Ghosts

Realizing that they face their greatest challenge yet, the party springs into action! A missile of light and force flies from Bolonwr's fingertip to strike the minotaur squarely in the rear. With a surprised roar, he turns and glares daggers at you all before turning his attention back to Janira. Eredur and Erik begin trying to close the distance between themselves and the melee, calling for Janira to flee back towards the tunnel, while Bash and Damien make use of the items found in Janira's pack to bolster themselves for the coming fight.

At the sound of Bash and Damien's voice Janira shoots a quick glance towards you, a smile of relief on her face. "Fancy meeting you here!" she calls back, ever the optimist. "Watch out, I'll bring him your way!"

Though bereft of his chosen weapon, the minotaur isn't ready to give up the fight just yet. As if in response to her words, he lowers his head and attempts to gore the halfling with his massive horns.

Gore vs. Janira: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24

Damage: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (4, 1) + 4 = 9

Janira Stabilize (DC 10): 1d20 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 - 1 = 13

Janira has just a split second to realize that there's nowhere to go, nowhere to move to, and then the minotaur's horns rip viciously into her midsection! Blood paints the ground and nearby foliage as the halfling drops limply to the ground. Although it's difficult to tell due to the dim light and distance, it looks as though she's at least not continuing to lose blood. Having felled his pest of a foe, the minotaur roars in triumph before turning his attention towards the new challengers across the stream.

"Fleiri heimskingjar fyrir slátrunina! Ég mun gefa þér bragð af krafti mínu eins og ég gerði með þessum litla plága!"

Giant:

"More fools for the slaughter! I will give you a taste of my might just as I did with this tiny pest!"

The minotaur seems confident and fearless, almost reckless now. But what he doesn't know or sense is that Janira's words echo and linger in the air, continuing to inspire courage in you all even though her voice is now silent...

Bash huffs and puffs towards the stream as fast as he can go, likely cursing to himself about the undergrowth that's slowing him down. Meanwhile, Eredur throws his arm up and a shower of pretty pink petals begins raining softly down on the minotaur's head. Surprised, the creature blinks and holds up his palm where a few of them land. He ponders them for a moment and then laughs, crushing them in his hand.

"Haha! Hvílík bragð! Ég er ekki eins og frændi Ferdinand; Ég hef enga tíma til að hætta og lyktu blómin! Ekki þegar það eru fleiri óvinir að mylja!"

Giant:

"Haha! What a puny trick! I'm not like cousin Ferdinand; I have no time to stop and smell the flowers! Not when there are more foes to be crushed!"

The situation seems quite grim, until Damien hears the gentle tinkling of a bell carried on the wind and recognizes it as Ruby's bell! It seems for all the party's meandering underneath the ground, they've ended up not far at all from where they initially started. Damien calls once for his faithful steed...but there's no answer. Drawing on every bit of good luck he's got built up and maybe even calling out to one or two of the gods for a bit of favor, he calls again...and a faint whinny can be heard, followed by the sound of pounding hooves and something crashing through the undergrowth!

Hoping to try and keep the minotaur's attention focused on the party, Bolonwr pushes forward through more undergrowth before sending another small missile at the minotaur who emits another roar of pain as it connects!

Re: Terrain:

Actually, those are small trees and the other green areas are undergrowth. There's no other specifics besides mention that the undergrowth is considered difficult terrain. In light of that, I'm inclined to rule the green squares as difficult terrain - which is how I've seen it ruled during the times I've been a player for this scenario.

Erik moves forward, quarterstaff ready to thump some minotaur skull as soon as he gets within reach. Although the minotaur doesn't seem to understand Erik's words, the warrior's body language and tone of voice he understands loud and clear. He reaches down and snatches up his battleaxe and stomps his way towards the fallen log. As soon as he reaches it however, he stops and gives the party a wicked grin.

"Hvernig nú, pínulítill sjálfur? Komdu og horfðu á mátt minn, ef þú þora!"

Giant:

"How now, puny ones? Come and face my might, if you dare!"

As everyone continues to scramble to try and help Janira, the crashing and pounding of hooves continues to grow louder until Ruby suddenly bursts through the foliage to the east! She skids to a stop next to Damien, rearing up on her hind legs with a whinny that seems to say, "The cavalry is here!"

Damien is another matter, however. Urging Ruby into a full gallop, the pair leap gracefully across the stream and hit the ground on the other side without even pausing or slowing down. The minotaur's eyes grow wide as the pair charge toward him and he tries to bring his axe to bear but it's no good - Damien's lance skewers the minotaur right in the neck, spraying blood all over himself, Ruby, and everything else within a few feet! So eager are they to get to their injured companions, Bash and Bolonwr both wade out into the stream instead of trying to inch their way across the fallen log. Bolonwr manages to half-wade, half-swim his way through the surprisingly strong current and steps out on the other side, making his way to Janira. Meanwhile, Bash finds himself having more difficulty - though he's not in any real danger of being swept away downstream, the current is strong enough that he's not able to make any forward progress either. Giving both of them a rather odd look, Eredur simply walks across the fallen log as if taking a leisurely stroll through the park.

While Damien hops down from Ruby and quickly binds Erik's wounds to keep him from bleeding out, Bolonwr reaches Janira's side and pours one of his potions down her throat. The color returns to the halfling's face and her eyes flutter open.

"Unfamiliar sky..." she mumbles, blinking, until the cobwebs clear from her mind and she bolts upright. "Holy smokes! The minotaur, I got his weapon away from him and then things went dark!" she gasps. She looks around and takes in the scene - Damien tending to a fallen Erik, Eredur standing vigil nearby, Bolonwr kneeling next to her, and Bash splashing around in the water. Then her eyes settle on the corpse of the minotaur, growing wide. "Oh my gosh! You all killed it!? That's...that's amazing!"

Though still injured, she scrambles to her feet and limps her way over to where most of the others are crowded around Erik. "Oh no...I guess the minotaur got his axe back, didn't he? "Oh...that was the last of the charges," Janira sighs. "Guess I'll need a new one when we get back to Absalom." Suddenly she starts, remembering that Bash is still splashing around in the stream behind them. "Whoops! Let's get Bash out of the water and then we can take a rest. You all made it through the caves, right? I want to hear all about it!"

He finally works his way across, using a slightly shallower section with a sandbar. "Oye. How's Erik and Janira doin'?"

Season of Ghosts

"I'm fine now, after your timely arrival," Janira smiles as she offers her hand to help Bash out of the water. "Just a bit tired...I led that beast all over the place and just couldn't shake him! I know I'll probably sleep like the dead tonight, same as you all from the looks of it."

She glances over her shoulder at Erik, whose wounds were mended but hadn't actually stirred just yet. "Erik's going to be fine too, thank goodness. He lost a lot of blood from the looks of it though so even with the healing from the wand, we'll probably have to give him a few minutes before he'll start coming round."

A bitter coppery taste fills Erik mouth as he bleary looks at blurred trees surrounding him. Eventally the voices of his companions intrudes as well as an ache of a pain in his chest, not the actual pain just actual memory of it.

"was beginin to think Erastil had lowered his standards, seeing you two here." he says shaking his head while his fingers poke and prod where the actual ax used to be.

"Guess we made it, nice work."

"We did indeed," Janira smiles at Erik. "And well-said; we couldn't have done it without working together - there's that 'Cooperate' part again," she chuckles as she beckons everyone back across the stream.
______

After taking a bit of time to listen to everything you've seen and discovered about the caves, Janira calls for camp to be made just outside of this second cavern entrance as everyone is growing visibly tired from their long day. The night, thankfully, passes uneventfully and you all wake to the bright sunshine streaming through the branches of the trees overhead.

With Janira curious to see the inside of the caves for herself you all retrace your steps back through the numerous tunnels and caves, stopping periodically to point out landmarks such as where you fought the jelly-creatures and ran across the two kobolds.

"Oh yeah...I thought I saw something come streaking through the brush at one point, not too long before you all showed up outside," the halfling muses. "But I was a little too preoccupied to get a good look. And they didn't even get caught by those amoebas - you all really must have put the fear of the gods into them!"

Continuing onward, you return back to the large chamber containing the pool of water and the miniature carving of Absalom. Uori is here too, preparing to make his own return trip to Escadar after having performed burial rites for the fallen gillmen. He's pleased to see you all alive and well and thanks you again for your help in making the caverns a safer place of pilgrimage for his people. After a bit of chatter, wherein Janira visibly restrains herself from bombarding the gillman with questions, Uori agrees to accompany the group back through the forest - after the encounter with the minotaur, better safe than sorry.

Your path clear, you exit the caverns and after calling Ruby, turn your feet towards Absalom. The return trip through the forest is uneventful and you all make camp at the same place that you stopped at on your trip out to the caverns, just off the road. After another evening of campfire stories and marshmallows (which Uori finds absolutely incredible and delicious) the next day dawns and you part ways with your gillman companion, his path leading north while yours lies to the east. The last day of your trip back to Absalom is marked by good weather and cheery dispositions - everyone is returning alive and surely after all that you've learned, your Confirmation will be marked a success. Though given more to oratory than song, Janira can't help but start up a sing-a-long of the catchy song, 'All Lamashtu's Creatures':

~All Lamashtu's creatures have a place in the fire
Some burn low and some burn higher
Some scream out loud on the funeral pyre
And others just flail their Hands or Paws
Or Wings or Claws
Or anything they got now~

"Learned that one from a fellow named Brobdingnagian - or Brob for short," Janira explains afterwards with a grin. "Oh! There's the city gates, just up ahead! Come on, we're almost home!"

Your trip into the foothills of the Kortos Mountains completed, Janira leads you all through the busy streets of Absalom back to the Grand Lodge where Master of Scrolls Kreighton Shane awaits. Upon learning that everyone has returned safely he whisks you all, including Janira, into his office.

"Welcome, welcome! It's so good to see that you've all returned safely," he greets you as he hops up into a sitting position on his desk. "Janira will give me her own report later but for now, I want to hear from you as this was your Confirmation! What exactly lies inside those caves? Were you able to learn anything about the gillmen? Please, tell me everything - leave no detail out!" he gushes, clearly eager to hear your stories.

Everyone feel free to post your individual takes on the mission, if you like!
______

Once you've given Master Shane your reports, he beams at all of you. "Well done, well done indeed," he applauds. "It seems to me that you all performed your duties in an exemplary manner! Of course, how could we expect any less? You were guided by an equally exemplary teacher," he says as he nods at Janira, who practically bounces up and down with delight at the praise. "Congratulations! You are all now the foremost authorities on these caverns and what they contain - so I think it only fair that you get the honor of naming them, eh Janira?"

"Oh yes, I agree completely Master Shane!" Janira nods enthusiastically. "Not many new initiates or agents receive the honor of naming a site or artifact! How lucky you all are!"

Master Shane hops off of his desk and strides forward, shaking each one of you by the hand. "It's my honor to promote each of you to the status of full Pathfinder field agents. Oh, there'll be a little ceremony of sorts later to make it more official-like, don't worry! I expect some of you will be hearing from Master Farabellus and others from Master Zey within the next few days on that regard. Until then, go and rest - you've more than earned it. You too, Janira! Now go, shoo!" he laughs as he ushers you all back out of his office.
______

True to his word, after a few days of relaxing and taking it easy, each of you are approached by one of the Masters - Bash, Damien and Erik by Master Farabellus and Bolonwr and Eredur by Master Zey - who confirm you as fully-fledged Pathfinders. As part of the ceremony each of you are also gifted with your very own wayfinder, personalized with your name as well as the words: Explore, Report, Cooperate - words that you all have taken to heart during your adventure together and that you will be expected to uphold for as long as you remain a member of the Pathfinder Society. With your Confirmation complete, each one of you is now ready to go forward...and make the Society proud.

(Or line your pockets with coin, slay evildoers, possess lost knowledge...those work, too!)

The End.

"Master Shaine! What an adventure!" Damien deposits himself into a chair and bites into an apple. "Ya see, we saw these ancient carvings on the walls. OH! That reminds me, check out my sketches!" Damien uncrumples the charcoal impression for the second time and hands it to Shaine. "Whattaya think? Not just a pretty face and a horse after all, eh? So ya, we saw these, and we also met this gillman. Bori? Mori? Somethin' like that. Anyway, the cave was sacred to him and his people. Must be why Janira here saw gillmen travelin' there before." The oread stuffs another chunk of fruit into his face, spilling juice on his shirt. "In the end, we came face to face with this bad ass minotaur! Luckily, my girl Ruby was close by, and Bash, Eridoor, Erik, and Bologna here all helped us kill the thing! What a day!"

Damien laughs cheerfully as he forms a huddle circle with the team, putting his hand in the center and beckoning everyone else to do the same. "Alright lads, I think we made the Society proud. How 'bout drinks as we consider ourselves CONFIRMED!" With that, he throws his hand up towards the ceiling and heads outside.

___

A few days later, Damien is seen leaning up against a fountain in the Coins District, writing in his journal.

Dear Ruby,
Ya did well today, and I think we just might be cut out for this Pathfinder Society thing. Met some good friends too! I know, I miss Qadira just as much as you do. But I dun really remember how to get back. Um... How did we get here anyway?
He pauses his entry for a moment, looking over at Ruby, then continues. Meh. Let's just keep doin' this for now. If nothin' else, it's fun as all hell!
