About Bolonwr

Bolonwr (Half-Orc Sorcerer)
Bolonwr is Half-Orc sorcerer from Varisia. Abandonded as a child, he did not realize he had his own arcane talents until nearly killed by a thug and then being trained by an ancestor he didn't know he had.

Early Life of Bolonwr:
Bolonwr is a Half-Orc wander in Varisia who has no true home. His parents, who he scarcely remembers, sold him to slavery he was young. Bolonwr and some other Half-Orc slaves managed to escape to freedom. From the other escapees he learnt the the art of self-scarring for luck, as well as survival in the wild. It made him tougher in mind, if not body, than most.

Despite the odds, he grew to maturity doing day-to-day work on the docks of Magnimar, like many other migrants.

While unloading a rather plain trading cog in port, Bolonwr found a strange medallion in the packing straw in the hold. It is now his prized possession. He keeps it under his shirt, to prevent others seeing seeing and wanting to steal it.

His medallion looks like a green-streaked soapstone carving of a large reptilian scale and is attached to a thin seamless leather cord. The medallion is feather light and and harder than iron. The leather cord is supple but also harder than iron. Most knives or sharp tools will go blunt even trying to cut either. On one side of the medallion is a simple bronze inlay of what looks like a block with bat-like wings on it.

Several days later, Bolonwr was set upon by Daeboneh, a foul tempered Human thug spoiling for a fight with a Half-Orc. Bolonwr became that Half-Orc… When Bolonwr regained consciousness, he was not only near Death's door, but what little money he had was gone. He was thankful that Daeboneh overlooked his prized medallion.

Bolonwr somehow managed to crawl out of the city to live in the wilds outside Magnimar until his wounds had healed. He was sure there was no charity in Magnimar for a Half-Orc both battered and penniless. He was hard-pressed using his survival skills just to feed himself for the next few days. Bolonwr spent most of this time sleeping; he kept passing out because of his injuries. He knows his ritual tattoos gave him the luck to survive, when he really should have died.

While healing, Bolonwr started to have some strange vivid dreams. Each time he found himself in a vast cavern lit by tall pillars of brightly glowing jade. And each time he was met by Hrmmm'sh: a Half-Orc with basalt skin and glowing rubies for eyes.

Hrmmm'sh is one of his distant ancestors. A sorcerer of earthen magics. He was also one of the few survivors of a group who killed a green dragon. Hrmmm'sh made a medallion out of a scale and some of the hide of that green dragon. The same medallion Bolonwr always wears.

Through successive dreams, Hrmmm'sh taught Bolonwr how to focus the arcane powers he did not know he had. His newfound talents are a strange mixture of both Earth and Dragon magics. When he asked Hrmmm'sh about this, his ancestor just shrugged and said “When you have real magic, it is a gift. It does not matter why it works, it just does! Take advantage of it!”

After several days, Bolonwr was far more hale and hearty than he should have been in such a short time. That is when his frequent dream-meetings with Hrmmm'sh stopped. Bolonwr still “talks” to Hrmmm'sh from time to time. But his ancestor's spirit is fickle and always forthcoming.

On the road back to Magnimar, Bolonwr met Daeboneh again. After exchanging some pleasantries, Bolonwr enjoyed the weight of Daeboneh's coin purse. He almost felt sorry for the unconscious and badly burnt Daeboneh. Almost, but not quite.

Perhaps this adventuring lark is not so bad after all. It is a bit more dangerous than living in the rough. But it is far more lucrative than he ever imagined!

Personality:
For a Half-Orc who was abandoned as a child, Bolonwr is surprisingly care free and laissez-faire by nature. He is not intimidating, physically. But he does have a very strong force of personality when needs be.

Motivation:
Bolonwr grew up to living on the rough at Starvation's edge. He has a strange notion that adventuring means easy money. The fact it is also dangerous does not bother him. Just living for crumbs is a dangerous struggle, as he sees things.
