"I will wait for someone to drop a rope from the window," Parison says.

Parison watches as the rope Maria has fixed in place descends to the ground. "After you," he says to Zithembe. The cleric watches as the shabti makes his way up the rope to the window. Exhaling, Parison takes hold of the rope and uses it to walk the wall up toward the window and his compatriots.

Season of Ghosts

Resolving that it's ultimately quicker to take the second floor window Maria chugs her elixir of Monkey Fish and scrambles up the side of the tower, pulling herself through the open window. After a quick glance around and confirming that there don't seem to be any hostiles in the immediate vicinity she's able to drop an unknotted rope down for the rest of you.

Even though the rope is unknotted you've got the wall to brace against so DC 5 Climb, which everyone should be able to make.

It takes a few moments for everyone to ascend and shortly thereafter you all find yourselves standing safety inside, on the tower's second floor. The walls of this wooden balcony are still filled with shelves of papers and the three-foot-tall fences continue to be all that stands between the balcony and the intricate spire of gears that extends from the floor below, growing thicker and wider as it ascends to an impenetrable tangle twenty feet above. Unlike before, the gears now spin rapidly and erratically and portals of Blue and Red hover in the air, shimmering softly.

While there are no signs of fey here, you can easily hear a ruckus coming from one floor up - gleeful laughter and the clatter and clank of machinery. Looking up, you can see tiny arms reaching into the gears in an attempt to tear them apart!

Season of Ghosts

Not about to let gremlins wreck the tower you begin to rush up the stairs to the third floor, none of you making an effort to do so quietly except for Maria. Though the stairs are wide enough for you to take them two abreast, there's a bit of a logjam at the top as Rumble and Zithembe find a Red Portal floating only a few feet in front of them that'll need to be maneuvered around unless one is feeling brave enough to leap into it.

More importantly, you can see that the gremlins on this floor are casually ripping apart the gears and throwing them through portals, chittering in delight at the destruction. And even as you make your presence known, they take to their work with a renewed, manic enthusiasm! Two of the gremlins look like the same manner of vexgit that you encountered outside in the square while the other two - also vexgits - look a little hardier.

Kn. Nature (DC 13):

You recognize the two hardier gremlins as vexgit human hunters.

Season of Ghosts

Between Maria and Janus you know alllll about these vexgit human hunters that accompany the two smaller vexgits. They sport a similar resistance to magic (SR 12) and to weapons not fashioned of cold iron (DR 5/cold iron). While they have no particular weaknesses neither do they posses any known immunities or special defenses. Unfortunately they possess all the same sabotaging capability as their weaker brethren (Speedy Sabotage & Wrecking Crew SUs) as well as a talent for archery and an especial hatred of humans (Archery Combat Style + Favored Enemy: Human). Luckily they're not too terribly tricky to strike, despite their tiny statures (AC 19; FF AC slightly worse than Touch AC).

Maria waits a beat for Zithembe to advance, which he does, moving up and attempting to sink his dagger deep into the Purple Vexgit HH - but Purple sees the attack coming and easily evades. As Zithembe moves forward Maria advances up the stairs, scooting past Rumble and around Red Portal #2 before taking aim at...

1=Green, 2=Orange
1d2 ⇒ 1

...Green, firing off a shot! But even with Green being slow to react, the arrow just misses the vexgit and clinks off the stone wall.

Alas, a miss even against FF AC :(

Janus fares better, racing up the stairs and past Zithembe to strike at Purple as he brings all the power of Imbrex to bear against the errant fey! While even he only just manages to crack Purple with his flail, he does so to devastating effect and caves in the creature's skull!

Unfazed by the violent and bloody death of their companion Vexgits Green and Cyan continue to rip gears free from the center mechanism, tossing them into the portals and down below with gleeful, sadistic laughter.

Parison tries to clear the cobwebs from his head at the sound of fighting on the floor above. He moves past Rumble and stops a step or two away from both Hepsubia and Maria. He takes in the scene and sees that it will take Rumble some time to close to the closest enemy. Hepsubia had just beaten him up the stairs. One option remained for the cleric of Sarenrae.

"Precious Dawnflower," Parison intones softly. "Please continue to bestow your divine insight to my companion," he says, reaching out to touch Maria on the shoulder and feeling the power of Sarenrae leave him and enter Maria.

Parison casts Guidance on Maria. +1 bonus to Maria's next attack roll, saving throw or skill check, whichever she chooses.

@Hepsubia

Hepsubia also advances forward and attempts to swing her sword/throw a bomb/fire an arrow at...something...but unfortunately misses quite badly. But she's unperturbed by this and taunts the remaining fey, perhaps attempting to fill Effie's shoes on the comedy front?

Last but not least, Parison makes his way up the stairs and grants Maria a small bit of guidance to help deal with the wily and destructive gremlins.

The one remaining vexgit human hunter does what he does best, taking a step to the side and leveling his bow at Parison - the only human in the group.

The first arrow hits - even with the added complication of the gears providing some cover - and hits hard, leaving an ugly wound on the priest! Thankfully the second arrow that the gremlin fires misses the mark, tinking off of one of the gears.

Janus Too waits for their human counterpart to end the enemy fey, sensing that Janus wishes to press their advantage in the tight quarters of the clock tower.

GM, does Janus still have Expeditious Retreat active? Duration is 5 mins and it was cast during the fight with the dragon and its minions.

*face-palm* I keep thinking Janus is a dhampir for some reason. Also no, Expeditious Retreat has faded by now; Janus still has See Invisibility up though.

Thankfully, the arrow didn't pierce the stomach or any vital organs in the lower reaches of his abdomen as the enter and exit wound were to the left of center on his body.

The cleric drops to his knees, hoping that the railing around the gears will provide additional cover and draws out his wand of cure light wounds. "Sarenrae, please bestow your healing touch through this wand," he murmurs out in desperation as he touches himself with the wand.

Wand: CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

As the magic of the wand washes over him, the wounds stop bleeding and close over, but some nasty scab and scar tissue remain that weep a miniscule amount of blood but not enough to be dangerous.

Parison drops prone as a free action, uses a move action to draw the wand and a standard action to heal himself with it.

Very noticeably injured from the other vexgit's arrow and not wishing for a second helping Parison ducks down behind the railing. He pulls out his own personal healing wand and gives himself a tap with it, mending a fair portion of his injuries.

Season of Ghosts

Deciding to hopefully let Rumble and Zithembe take care of Orange, Maria sets her sights on Cyan and lets fly with another arrow - but the gremlin is frustratingly evasive and manages to just barely duck the shot. Rumble also finds himself having difficulty as he takes another massive hammer swing at Orange only for the vexgit to dodge out of the way.

On the bright side, Zithembe has better luck as he manages to just barely score a hit against Orange with his cold iron dagger, leaving it very bloodied but still standing - and still defiant.

'Inane' is both an amusing and apt description!

Scenario doesn't specify but sure, we'll say that you can edge into a square with a portal without passing through it.

Janus stalks towards Orange, conjuring a writing mass of negative energy into his palm. He tries to reach out and touch the vexgit but the fey is ever elusive and manages to duck the attempt, leaving Janus still holding the spell's energy in his hand.

Janus Too follows after his master but alas, he can only go so far on his little bitty reptilian legs.

Cyan makes a rude gesture at Hepsubia as he takes a step back from the elf, continuing to rip cogs and other bits of machinery off of the central gear mechanism!

Going through it might help close the distance quickly but he dismissed the idea as being unsafe in terms of self-risk. Moving, the cleric opts to take the long away around the gears. He rushes past Maria and fails to see another portal before stepping into it and suddenly finds himself behind Janus Too.

"Woah.....that was an unexpected trip!" he says, feeling a little light-headed from his first experience of portal hopping.

Parison stands up and them moves through Portal 1 and winds up where he is on the map.....I hope.

Season of Ghosts

Yep! And obviously Janus doesn't end up taking any arrow damage after all :)

Or rather...Janus might have suffered a few arrow scratches if it weren't for him negative-energy blasting Orange into a pile of dust as the vexgit tries to fire point-blank at the strange Ulfen man!

And with only Cyan remaining, Rumble is able to step up and clobber him good with his warhammer! While the vexgit doesn't immediately fall it's terribly wounded and ceases wreaking havoc with the gears, probably preparing to try and flee - but you have it surrounded and have no trouble smooshing it into paste before it manages to take even two steps.

Good thing, too. The clock's gears continue to turn but man are they creaking and groaning and rattling a lot more than they were before all this mess began. Much more sabotage and something unfortunate might've happened...

Combat Over!

Another post to follow, please stand by~

Season of Ghosts

Now that you've got a moment - and can no longer hear any sounds of sabotage coming from above or below - you might take a few moments to check the fallen vexgits for anything of use. While their weaponry and armor are of masterwork quality they're also sized for tiny creatures, rendering it useless to any of you. But there are a few useful items to be found - each of the vexgit human hunters carry a blue-tinted potion as well as a small jar of a pink, slightly oily substance.

Spellcraft - Potion x2 (DC 16):

They're potions of Cure Light Wounds.

Spellcraft - Jars of Pink Stuff x2 (DC 18):

Hey, they're jars of Universal Solvent.

It's also about this time that you hear a familiar, feminine voice call out from somewhere in the vicinity of the 1st floor, "Hey! Who's up there??? If you're here to cause trouble, you'd better get out! And if you're here to help...well, HELP! The supplies are attacking!"

Sounds like Seripan's managed to make her way inside the tower as well...

While Maria and Zithembe, startled by the cry, look over the railing to see what they can see below Rumble doesn't waste any time and begins barreling back down the stairs as fast as his legs can carry him. Those who peer over the railing see what looks like a rather large bag - yes, a bag - leaping and thrashing around down on the first floor as if in pursuit of something.

You recognize that this bag is a type of construct known as an animated object.
