Rumble looks at Hep, the veins in his face fit to burst and skin red enough to be a tomato. DIDN'T CHECK AND LOCKED THE DOOR?! "If yeh f&@& wit' our lives one more time, aye'm gonna need an atonement. Get. Yer. S!$#. Tahgether," he warns in a cold, even voice.

Taking a deep breath, he looks back at the others and nods. Once he gets a nod in return, he throws it wide open and steps inside.

Once he Steps Inside:

"IN THA NAME O' THA ALMIIIIIGHTY TOOOOOORAAAAAAAG, CEASE YER EVIL OR SLEDGE'LL EXACT THA PRICE FROM YER SKULLS!" he bellows, ready for a fight.

Parison gives Hepsubia an incredulous look, mouth agape. He might have stood there longer, but when Rumble talks about lives in the balance, it snaps him back to reality. He draws his scimitar and is ready for action.

"Be careful, everyone," he says in a hushed whisper, true concern in his voice.

I adjusted the positioning of the group to reflect in character actions a bit and keep us mostly together.

Maria steps up to watch as Hepsubia work the complicated lock, covering her with bow drawn and arrow nocked. As Hep pulls her joke and Rumble overreacts, she adds a quick comment to the dwarf, "Easy there Torag, everyone deals with high stress situations differently."

As Hepsubia slips out of the way, the archer elf winks at Hep and whispers, "Ehkä antaa kääpiölle kaksi vuosikymmentä nähdä huumoria."

Elven:
"Maybe give the dwarf two decades to see the humor."

Keeping her eyes flitting between the three doors, she watches and waits.

After a bit of awkwardness it becomes apparent that Hepsubia did, in fact, manage to get the southern door unlocked. Though Zithembe has some misgivings about making a bold entrance the rest of the group seems ready to rumble with Rumble, who takes a deep breath and violently kicks the door open!

Eight stone pillars stand around this room. At the center of the room, a five-foot-diameter spiral of twisted arcane glyphs is charred into the floor. Broken bones stained with blood encircle the spiral, and an onyx gem sits in the center. Standing around this spiral are three cultists; all three wear chain shirts and carry what look to be whips at their sides. One of them also seems have a sheath for a dagger and two carry morningstars as well.

And all three are very surprised at the group's sudden and unexpected intrusion.

"What the hell!?" the foremost cultist sputters, his concentration on the ritual completely lost.

Effie steps forwards free 5' step and begins juggling her pistol and a couple of colourful balls.

"Shoot first, ask questions later! Them ain't the good guys, that's for sure!"

Parison quickly lifts up his voice in righteous prayer. "Blessed Dawnflower, may your presence give us courage and guide our arms as we cleanse this heresy," he calls out in a clear voice.

Zithembe's eyes transform from copper spheres to rubies as he moves down the chamber toward the pillared room. Those nearby feel the righteous zeal of Sarenrite warriors purifying the dungeons when they were less ancient well up in their hearts.

Season of Ghosts

Taking advantage of the element of surprise - boy these guys must've really been focused on their ritual - the group begins springing into action like a well-oiled machine. Effie takes a step forward and begins a truly impressive juggling display to inspire her friends and intimidate her foes while Maria moves closer, weapon at the ready, trying to recall if she knows anything about the cultists that might prove useful.

Maria:

All three cultists are human and you know that humans generally don't have any innate weaknesses or strengths. But as the cultists turned their heads towards the doorway you caught a glimpse of something hanging around their necks - symbols depicting a black circle edged with a thin sliver of silver.

Make a Kn. Religion DC (20). If you succeed, open the second spoiler below.

Spoiler:

You recognize the symbol that each cultist carries as that of Ahriman, Lord of All Divs. You know him as the embodiment of pure destruction who seeks the utter obliteration of existence through his div servants. Ahriman is a demigod, and his unholy symbol is meant to depict light eclipsed by darkness.

Parison likewise moves to aid his friends, calling upon Sarenrae's blessing to do so. And Zithembe taps into the spirits of the past and the ancient Sarenites who once purified the dungeons add their might to yours!

As arrows and spells fly, Rumble steps into the gap, ready to be the bulwark against the tide of evil cultists. He levels Sledge at the nerd cultist who is clearly the leader.

"In tha name o' all thah is holy," he begins, scraping Sledge against the floor like a matchstick, causing it to erupt with holy energy. "Cease er draw yer las' breath."

Quick as a flash, Hepsubia fires an arrow into the nearest cultist - Yellow - and just manages to sink it into the meat of his shoulder with a satisfying *THUNK*. Yellow yelps in pain and Hepsubia adds insult to injury by making yet another wisecrack in response to Maria's words.

Rumble then calls one last time for the three men to cease their shenanigans or face the holy wrath of Torag as he strikes Sledge like a match, causing it to flare with power!

Clearly, these guys don't know who they're dealing with...

Rumble heeds Effie's call to duck as she pops Yellow in the upper thigh with a bullet, spraying blood in all directions and all over his two cronies behind him.

"YEAAARGH! Don't just stand there, do something!" he cries to his friends as he clutches his injured leg. And finally, their wits now about them, the pair do leap into action.

Red steps up behind Yellow and begins casting...

Spellcraft (DC 17):

...and suddenly a cacophonous blast erupts in the midst of the group!

Everyone except for Hepsubia takes 1d8 ⇒ 6 sonic damage and must make a DC 15 Fort or be stunned for 1 round.

Blue also begins casting a spell...

It's Divine Favor.

...and seems bolstered for it, in some manner. He then moves as if to engage Rumble, drawing a nice-looking morningstar as he does.

Though Effie easily shrugs off the ringing in her ears Maria isn't so lucky and finds herself momentarily stunned, her bow dropping to the ground in the process.

"Hah! We are not as weak as you seem to have th-urgh!" Yellow begins, but his words are cut off mid-sentence as his face contorts in another grimace of pain. Yet there's also a flicker of confusion, as though this pain is unexpected, somehow?

Still noticeably injured, Yellow then falls further back into the chamber and begins to cast a spell...

Rumble, ever the single-minded warrior, raises his armaments as the cultist approaches. Unfortunately, he is utterly blindsided by the explosion of noise behind him, even with Effie's magical aid. Sledge thuds to the ground with a weight greater than it's size would suggest.

Which I just used to put an "arrow" (rhymes too!) in your bellow. Sorry, belly. Probably Effie could do a better song with "yellow" and "mellow", if her ears don't ring too much. To end your sorrow.

The blast rocks Parison's concentration. Momentarily, he clasps his ringing ears, but then realizes that he's able to move and recover. However, he notices that both Maria and Rumble appear to be shell-shocked by the concussive force. Worse, there is nothing between Rumble and one of the cultists and only he and Effie are between said cultist and Maria.

"Sarenrae, your aid is needed. Keep this worker of nefarious deeds from hurting my friends," he calls out, keeping his spiritual connection with his goddess and allowing himself to be a conduit for her aid.

Parison casts Hold Person on Blue Cultist. Blue needs to make a DC 16 Will save to negate the effect. Otherwise, the subject becomes paralyzed and freezes in place for a maximum of 2 rounds. It is aware and breathes normally but cannot take any actions, even speech. Each round on its turn, the subject may attempt a new saving throw to end the effect. This is a full-round action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity.


Season of Ghosts

While Parison and Zithembe are able to ignore the ringing in their ears, Rumble is not as fortunate; even with Effie's attempted intervention it's not enough to keep the dwarf from being left reeling on his feet.

Concerned about his two companions being vulnerable to the cultists, Parison flings some offensive magic of his own as he attempts to hold Blue in place...

...and succeeds! A look of surprise and then horror dawns over Blue's face just before the magic takes hold and freezes him in place! As Zithembe calls out a warning about Yellow's spellcasting and moves into the room, Hepsubia takes aim and strikes him in the shoulder with another arrow!

It's a valiant effort but Yellow manages to remain focused through the pain and continues with his casting.

Effie sounds increasingly alarmed as she takes stock of the situation.

Effie's headscarf catches fire, burning away quickly to reveal two small, red, horns tipped with flame. The fiery lights in her eyes grow brighter.

"Oh gods! I don't wanna!"

She sprints forwards, dodging past the immobile dwarf and cultist to look the second cultist Red in the eye.

"Aaaaagghhhhh!!!!"

Effie stretches out a hand - and a gout of flame engulfs both Red and Yellow! The fires on her horns are extinguished, and she gasps.

This would provoke from Red, but it seems like he doesn't have a weapon drawn so wouldn't threaten. If he does have a threatening weapon, Effie's actions won't change and she'll draw the AoO.

Alarmed and compelled by something deep within herself, Effie darts forward past the immobile Blue and right up into Red's business. The cultist seems startled but that quickly shifts to horror as the ifrit raises her hand and blasts him and Yellow point-blank with a gout of fire!

Yellow shrieks in pain, his spellcasting disrupted! Red, having been caught without a weapon, finally draws his morningstar and attempts to bash Effie over the head with it while Blue attempts to throw off the effects of Parison's magic.

While Red misses Effie by a noticeable margin, Blue succeeds at resisting the Hold Person spell and begins to move again! As he does, Blue groans and shakes his head, as though in pain.

Effie & Zithembe:

Over the din of the battle, you hear something - the sound of someone or something speaking. Someone or something that isn't any of the cultists. Sounds like it's coming from somewhere on the southern side of the chamber.

As the ringing in Maria's ears subsides, she finds herself able to move once more. She swiftly reaches down and grabs her bow, taking a step back as she takes aim and fires a shot at Blue. The arrow slams into his chest with a satisfying *THOCK* and blood spurts out of his mouth; he's looking pretty rough but isn't down for the count just yet!

His original plan disrupted, Yellow curses loudly and falls back to the rear of the chamber. "You'll not stop us! Not even your trickery will be enough!" he cries as he begins casting once more, pointing at Effie.

The ringing in Rumble's head no longer blurring out his vision, he forces his eyes to focus. Trusting his training, he steps forward while turning around to grab Sledge. Despite seeing three handles coming up from the floor, he manages to grab the real one before twisting his body to crash it down from overhead upon one of the cultists swinging at Effie.

"Whah 'appening?" he asks. The words trip out of his mouth, but his eyes show an increasing level of focus and understanding every second.

Effie is not currently providing a flank, sorry. She's holding her pistol in one hand, and her other hand is empty. Technically I don't think she needs a free hand to use her burning hands SLA, but she'll need a free hand to reload. I should get her a cestus. Also, next level her juggling ability gives her an extra hand (sort of anyway). Always assuming survival!

"I hear it but do not see it," Zithembe calls back as he moves down the back wall to follow the apparent lead cultist. He swings at the the (yellow) cultist with the found longsword.

As Parison sees the chaos unfolding around him, he suddenly feels something warm trickling just below his left ear. Reaching to that area with his left hand, he touches his neck just below his ear. When he moves his hand back into his field of vision, he see that his index and middle finger are bloodstained.

Looking ahead, he can see a tiny trace of blood coming from Rumble and Effie's ears. He moves forward, stepping past his battle buddy and in between two pillars. "Sarenrae, your humble disciple asks for your healing touch for my friends and myself," he prays, becoming a conduit of healing to his friends from his goddess.

Parison will Channel Energy to heal his friends. From where he is on the map now, it should get everyone who is hurt. He will de-select the two cultists with Selective Channeling.

Channel Energy: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (2, 5) + 1 = 8

As Parison channels Sarenrae's holy power to heal himself and his friends, Hepsubia and Zithembe work to put an end to Yellow. While Hepsubia's attempt to stick another arrow in Yellow is thwarted by an inconveniently-placed pillar, Zithembe's efforts prove more successful. The shabti closes with the cultist and swings the found longsword, cleanly separating head from body! Blood flies in all directions, splattering Zithembe, the door, the floor, the nearby pillars, the wall...and a tiny, spherical, invisible object that seems to be hovering in the chamber's southeast corner!

There's the tiniest of pauses and then...

"Oh scumber!"

And now you know where this sneaky bugger is!

Just before Effie shoots him in square in the chest Red's expression is one of (what seems to be) genuine puzzlement. "Wait, friend? It was just-URGH!"

Red staggers, terribly wounded by the blast to his chest, but remains standing. "For...the mistress..." he chokes as he draws his morningstar with one hand and grasps the symbol hanging around his neck with his other, sending a wave of negative energy through the chamber! The energy washes over everyone, including the mysterious foe in the corner, except for Maria who is still outside of the chamber.

Channel Negative Energy: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 5) = 10

Effie, Hepsubia, Parison, Rumble, Zithembe - please make a DC 13 Will for half damage.

GM Stuff:

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13

From the nearby corner, the voice yelps with pain as the negative energy hits it. "Yeowch! Time to make like a leaf and get outta here!"

The weird tiny floating blood splatter zips towards the northern corner, attempting to barrel past Hepsubia as it does...

Hepsubia may take an AoO if she's got a melee weapon in her hand as this thing has to physically enter and fly through her space; we'll go with a 20% miss chance since you can see enough splatter to have an idea of where to aim but it's still not the easiest to see.

...and presuming Hepsubia doesn't slap it silly, the thing stops in the northeast corner of the room. And then, the creature suddenly pops into view! It whips its long tongue in Rumble's general direction.

Spellcraft (DC 16):

Whatever the head is doing, it's an effect identical to a Charm Person spell.

"Hey buddy, do me a favor and keep your friends busy for a minute? Got an important meeting to get to and I don't have time for questions!"

Rumble, please make a DC 13 Will.

If You Fail:

You suddenly feel compelled to help your buddy, Mister Floating Gross Head, out and keep your other friends occupied as per Charm Person.

Parison howls in pain as his body is constricted by unseen unholy energy. He doubles over in agony, but manages to stay on his feet. For a moment, his focus is on the cultist and the damage he has wrought with his own dark rites. Thinking to channel once more, he stops as an ugly disembodied head appears to his left and speaks.

"Hey, ugly! Since you're in such a hurry, have one for the road!" he says through gritted teeth as he takes a vial of holy water and lobs it at this abberation.

Parison throws one of his vials of holy water at the new creature.

Thrown Weapon: Holy Water: 1d20 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 1 - 2 = 7

Since that will miss, I'll let the GM roll for where it lands. Any undead creatures or evil outsiders will still take 1 point of good damage, 3 points counting the Spiritual Invocation.

Though wracked with pain from the remaining cultist's unholy energies, Parison manages to weather the worst of it and still keeps his wits about him. He flings a vial of holy water...
