Mel takes one of the invis potions and hands it to the gal with a bow and a flourish, "May your journey be safe and swift." "Oh, and do you know how to make this pooch work?" he asks, holding up the onyx statue of a devil hound.

When the party is ready, Mel will attempt to speak the command word she said she would give us.

Gamemaster | CC Map | S4 Map

Sascha accepts the oil of Invisibility with another relieved sigh, "With the statuette in hand, I think you have to stand near the portrait of the devil dog in his room and say the command word. Then a portal should open up. If the person you're looking for is still alive, she should be on the other side." The woman explains, then offers up the command word. Ophelia notes that it's the same Infernal word etched into the bottom of the figurine.

"If there is nothing else, I'm going to attempt my escape now. Thank you again."

Gamemaster | CC Map | S4 Map

Sascha nods, quickly applies the invisibility oil, and disappears.

Picking up the devil dog statue, Rufus walks over to the painting and speaks the command word. Suddenly a 10 foot wide hole in space forms with flames outlining its edges. The fire around the gate does not give off any heat, but the same cannot be said for the other side of the portal.

In fact, seething with infernal heat and echoing with the snarls of hellish hounds, the cavern-kennels of Losarkur, Beastlord of Avernus, reek of horror. A long hall separates two rows of cages that are barred with thick, cracked bones; within each cage at least one pair of red eyes glows ominously. Spaced throughout the cavern are pillars of jagged stone that plunge into small, round pools of molten, steaming lava, which provide the faint light that pervades this nightmarish haunt. At the far end of the chamber, you see some cages hanging from the walls. Behind you, the portal stays open even after everyone has crossed over.

Here is a link to the new map. Feel free to rearrange the marching order and let me know when you're ready to move forward. The pillars have lava around them, so you might want to be careful around those spaces.

Moving forward, the room opens up to a wide chamber that lacks the cages and columns of the rest of the kennel, instead featuring wide, rounded walls rising up to a height of forty feet. Hanging from the vaulted ceiling are three iron gibbets; the middle one contains the hunched form of a humanoid woman, her hair and skin matted with dried blood. Twenty feet separate the gibbets from the ground. On the wall behind the center cage appears to be some type of control mechanism for the gibbets, although its operation doesn't appear to be immediately clear.

As you approach a fiendish creature emerges from the south and stands below the cage holding the woman. It resembles a powerfully built wolf the size of a large draft horse, with ebony fur and burning, fiery red eyes. Snarling and bearing its long fangs, it appears poised to attack.

Knowledge (planes) can identify this creature, although it looks a lot like the hellhounds you fought earlier. Please note that it is Large sized.

Halkale, it is an evil outsider, so feel free to make the knowledge check. I included your favored enemy damage in the total when you hit.

Quiella strides forth and tries to whack the devil dog with her hammer. Unfortunately its tough hide resists the blow. To be clear, that's a miss on the roll, not damage resistance.

Rufus and Melufiuos both attempt to fire arrows at the fiendish canine, but both miss. Rufus manages to place his hypnotic stare on it, however.

Valik tumbles in to engage the enemy, and lashes out with his sansetsukon. He finds himself a bit off balance afterwards, however, and does not hit.

Halakale then follows up with an arrow of his own that strikes the hellish creature in a soft area, although it doesn't appear to hit anything vital. That does not confirm.

The large hell hound takes a 5 ft. step to the south then proceeds to breathe a 30 ft. cone of powerful hellish fire on everyone nearby. Valik, Quiella, Halkale, Frostfur, and Ophelia all take 35 fire damage. If you make a DC 21 reflex save, you only take 17. Sorry, this scenario doesn't mess around.

Halkale doesn't dodge the flames very well and takes the full brunt of them. A moment later, Ophelia's healing wave washes over him.

Frostfur takes 17, healed for 16, down 1. Halkale takes 35 healed 16, down 19

Halkale unleashes a pair of arrows again.

Weathering the point-blank flames the best he can, Valik takes a small chunk out of the devil dog and prepares to deflect any incoming melee blows.

Ophelia moves to a more central position and channels positive energy to heal most of the group, which also gives the recipients a bit of good fortune.

Perhaps thankful she's a paladin, Quiella quickly recovers from near death thanks to her personal healing and that of Ophelia. She then smacks the hell hound of unusual size hard with her hammer.

With nearly perfect aim, Melufiuos sticks an arrow in the fiendish canine's side. I believe you only get one reroll, sorry Mel.

Rufus pulls out the wand of Charm Monster and activates it, but unfortunately the creature appears to shrug off the effects.

Halkale fires two arrows at the hellish creatures, but both bounce off its armored hide.

As Frostfur approaches, the Large sized creature demonstrates its reach as it takes a massive bite out of the wolf, who then falls unconscious from its injuries. Frostfur takes 23 damage in total, 17 from the bite, 6 more from fire.

The creature then turns its attention to Quiella, stepping over and biting her despite her magical protection and leaving her unconscious as well. Quiella takes 30 damage in total, 19 from the bite, 11 from fire.

Ouch. He punched through Quiella's 28 AC? Nasty brute. Of note to the party: Ophelia's life-link is still active while Quiella is unconscious, so when Quiella's turn comes up (i.e. when she rolls to stabilize) then she will take 5 damage and Ophelia will heal 5... which will, I assume, undo the stabilization. It also won't be too far from killing Quiella. Quiella can end it as an immediate action, but she has to be conscious to do so.

Melufiuos currently has no damage. I'm currently fighting off a cold so my proofreading isn't at 100%.

Mel should be full health, from Ophelia's channel. Not that it will help any, once the beast gets his of me.
