Talor discovers that there is a magical trap on the steel chest, associated with the lock. (This is confirmed by Ralklain.)
Sorry I didn't realize this before. My bad - I think I was confusing game editions and who can find magical traps.
Ralklain studies all of the chests very carefully, but does not gain any more clues as to there The three chests detect as magical, although you are not sure what schools are involved - probably illusion for the copper-banded chest, evocation for the red lacquered chest, and the universal school for the steel, but all are faint.
The neither the jar, the keys (the one in the jar or the one in the basket), nor the basket detect as magical.
Ralklain Kiessen
|
So Wuliem, want to try to disable this magical trap with your recently acquired tools?
About the wicker basket? Also, does the door we came through have a lock?
| GM FurtiveZoog |
Sadly, disabling magical traps can only be done by characters with the Trapfinding class ability, and classically-trained rogues - and all rogues, it seems - have fallen out of favor.
under Elements of a Trap ... Magic
Magic Trap: The DC for both Perception and Disable Device checks is equal to 25 + the spell level of the highest-level spell used. Only characters with the trapfinding class feature can attempt a Disable Device check involving a magic trap.
The wicker basket, and the cloth and key within it, do not detect as magical.
The door you came through does have a lock and a key-hole.
Ralklain Kiessen
|
Well, what about we try this blue key before doing anything else? Of course not in the steel chest, please.
I mean if the wicker could be used as a sieve to get the key that's in the acid.
Alia Charybdis
|
Alia takes a careful look at the wadded cloth from the basket, as well as the key that rested on it, and the basket, itself.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Alia Charybdis
|
Alia carefully unfolds the wadded cloth, looking carefully for any hidden items or perhaps writing contained within.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Talor Blackstone
|
As Ralklain says, perhaps we should figure out where the blue key goes...Also, we might use the caustic solution to melt the steel cube. It should bypass the trap, but might destroy what is inside. Otherwise, I have a way to break open the jar from a distance.
At this last line, Talor taps the gun at his side.
| GM FurtiveZoog |
Angry green viper: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
A small, but very angry green viper, retreating and still hidden in the folds of the cloth, strikes out at Alia, but fortunately misses.
The small green viper is poisonous, but not severely so, and its poison is very rarely deadly.

[spoiler=Initiatives]
viper's initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Alia's Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Exitium's Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Narvik's Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
Pizzmic's Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Ralklain's Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Talor's Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Wuliem's Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Talor, *The viper, everyone else
Talor Blackstone

Talor's hand goes first to his gun - however, seeing Ralklain cringe and put his hands to his ears, he goes for his warhammer instead as he moves toward Alia.
Did we already recover the key? If so... The dwarf stops short of attacking the viper and tells Alia to Stay back - keep your distance. It is hiding and might not strike again.
Held action to strike the snake if it strikes at one of us:
held attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
damage: 1d8 ⇒ 6
| GM FurtiveZoog |
Indeed, the snake does not pursue its attack.
Getting too near the cloth would seem risky.
Random roll as to where the key landed: 1d20 ⇒ 9
The key landed very close to the snake, unfortunately.
Pizzmic
|
Pizzmic having slightly shrieked having been so close to the viper backs away 5 ft and cast presdigitation to move the key a safe distance away from the viper towards himself once out of the square pizmmic says anyone have a stick or rod that could pin its head? I KNEW IT ITS ALWAYS DAMN SNAKES
Ralklain Kiessen
|
Just leave it there Pizzmic. They are testing us they might be tested as well.
We will try the key on the chests that do not have traps (first and second if I'm not mistaken)
| GM FurtiveZoog |
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
As Ralklain turns the blue stone key with runes in the copper-banded chest he realizes that the chest is just an illusion, and it seems to fade to only a faint outline to his eyes.
Ralklain then tries the key in the red-lacquered chest (perhaps you notice that the runes on the key match the pulsing runes on the chest...), and the chest opens.
Ralklain's Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (5) + 0 = 5
Alia's Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Exitium's Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Narvik's Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Pizzmic's Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Talor's Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Wuliem's Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Although not directly nearby, Pizzmic and Wuliem hear a small, clicking noise come from the chest. Looking around, you see a small, golden key was released from a slit in the ceiling, dropping 6 inches down from the 15-foot-high ceiling.
There is also a key in the chest, forged into the end of a jeweled scepter.
Wuliem BrokenCrown
|
Wuliem points up at the key.
I think that we may have need of that too.
knowledge nature: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
Wuliem--absently--points at the snake as if this were an afterthought.
Oh, if you don't bother it, then it won't bother you.
He seems to be thinking...I wonder if I had some of its...if I could...hmmm...
Narvik Drak
|
Think you can get that key the same way, Pizz? I'd hate to have anyone lose a finger. Same for this other thing in the ceiling. I hope these keys unlock something worth our while.
Ralklain Kiessen
|
Ralklain detects magic on the scepter, then takes it if nothing is amiss. Takes 20 on perception to analyze it. After a long time looking at it, he walks to the illusion chest and checks what's inside, reaching for it. I love when illusions just disappear in front of me.
| GM FurtiveZoog |
Ralklain's appraise: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Ralklain detects that the scepter is note magical and that the gems, while pretty, are merely costume jewelry. He also sees that the chest is, indeed, an illusion and he can reach right through it, finding nothing else. (The key hanging from the ceiling is also non-magical.)
Talor Blackstone
|
Talor grins. Our test may be at an end. We have one chest - he points at the steel cube - and the door - he jerks a thumb behind him - and two keys. All that should remain is to open the locks, no?
Alia Charybdis
|
If this is a test, then this all seems a bit...simple. But not having anything else that I can think of, at the moment, I am game to try.
Hrmmmm.
Pizzmic, can you fish out that key from the bottom of that jar with your Prestidigitation?
| GM FurtiveZoog |
Pizzmic doesn't actually need to cast prestidigitation again since it lasts one hour, and without concentration.
The viper appears to be deep in thought while looking at Wuliem.
Pizzmic magically tugs on the suspended key, but is unable to pull it down...
It can only "slowly lift 1 pound of material" and string is remarkably strong.
But, Pizzmic can easily so cause the jeweled brass key to rise from the bottom of the jar and be collected, presumably with a rag.
Ralklain Kiessen
|
Gimme a minute.
Ralklain takes a knife and a crossbow bolt. He uses the knife to make chips on the tip of the crossbow bolt, making it similar to a screwdriver point.
I'm improving my chances of hitting the wire.
He then arms it on the crossbow, the edge horizontally aligned, takes aim and shoots at the wire:
Crossbow: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
There was a rule you could take 3 rounds aiming to improve your hitting chances, wasn't it?
I could aim for the key but that could damage it.
Talor Blackstone
|
Talor draws his dagger, looks up at the string, then at Pizzmic, then at the dagger, then at the golden key. Those watching him can easily imagine a hamster, frantically galloping around a steel cage inside the dwarf's head.
Perhaps if we try to open the steel chest first, we can get closer to the key near the ceiling.
Ralklain Kiessen
|
Oh, and let me give you a piece of advise folks. If anytime in your life you find yourself in front of a chest with a illusion aura, do the following: first, you try to move your hand through it. If it's solid you try to lift it. If it moves you simply try to open it, as if there was no lock.
| GM FurtiveZoog |
I don't know about the aiming rule, although I wish there was something like that; it makes sense.
Twang! goes Ralklain's crossbow and the string snaps and falls to the ground.
1d20 ⇒ 8
Fortunately, the key - potentially soft, especially if of real gold - seems undamaged by the 15' drop to the hard stone floor below.
Ralklain Kiessen
|
Ralklain bows, extending a hand sideways.
Thank you, thank you ladies and gentleman! I love you!
May we try the door first? The magical trap on this chest may destroy the key or something.
Exitium would try to get it if you hadn't described it ^^
Wuliem BrokenCrown
|
Wuliem begins to reach into a pocket, looking for his tools.
....Wuliem then checks a second pocket.
...Wuliem begins to look into a third pocket.
..Wuliem--after his 10th attempt--glances sheepishly at the group, shrugging his shoulders.
Wuliem then smiles suddenly reaching into his backpack.
I knew that I put them somewhere! Now for the door?
Ralklain Kiessen
|
Wuliem. Hey, Wuliem! Look at me! Here's the golden key, and there's another key. We have to keys for two locks, you don't need to pick the lock, yet. Please search in your pockets where have you put your attention...
I love you Wuliem! My favorite ADHD person!
Narvik Drak
|
I do believe he had at least one too many explosions. Narvik can't help but chuckle in admiration of Wuliem. Try not to ruin your new robe.
Wuliem BrokenCrown
|
Wuliem glances wistfully at his new--unused--tools.
He--absently--places them into a pocket.
I...uh...well...suppose that we could attempt to use the keys provided, although Alia is probably correct in that this 'test' has been too easy!
He then looks at the door.
Wuliem mumbles:
Maybe they won't notice if I just...
...as he fishes back into his pockets!
Ralklain Kiessen
|
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 13
Calm down Wuliem, I have and idea that might work, and then you may use those tools... afterall, we dress to impress!
Wuliem BrokenCrown
|
Wuliem approaches the steel cube-chest.
He studies it for a moment.
I wonder if we poured the clear glass jar half full
of liquid around the crack if it would eat away
whatever trap you guys see there?
| GM FurtiveZoog |
Hmmm. It is possible. There are no rules for it, per se.
Wuliem very carefully pours some of the fluid on the trapped part of the chest, and it sizzles as the acidic solution eats some of the metal. (Hopefully, none of the contents of the chest!)
The chest is able to be turned over, too, and Alia does so.
Because of the acid, however, it is now difficult to tell if the trap is working still or not.
The air in the room, too, is starting to become a bit acrid, however, and your eyes are starting to water a bit.
(Wuliem's used to it.)
