I'm assuming that none of the doors have actually ben opened yet, I was just letting you know that the two doors up top, the south door all the way at the bottom, and the 6 doors along the hallway are all unlockable with the keys, when you decide to open them, and that there is one more key on the ring that has not been used.

"In my seasoned, personal, professional experience, where you have a jail, you have a jailer. And usually some poor saps that couldn't stay out of clink. Although most jail's don't feature odd and apparently disused secret passages," she says, waving broadly at the east wall. "Again - professional experience - jails are to be avoided, emptied frequently, and exited with all haste. Since we've failed at avoidance, let's work harder on emptying and exiting."
Merisiel grabs up the key ring, moves to 'B', and opens the door.
Raul |
"Who's Rosh?" Raul wonders out loud as he notices the etchings. His attention then turns toward a suspicious wall between two doors. "Hmm..."
That must be a hidden passage, but it's practically invisible. Maybe I should... push on it?
DM Beckett |
The door to this jail cell has a small window at eye level, blocked by three vertical iron bars. Matted straw is strewn across the floor, and a set of manacles hangs affixed to the wall opposite the entrance. Two buckets sit at the center of this dank prison. Opening the door causes a loud screeching sound.
Sorry, this is the first indication (and I just noticed it) that any of the doors had "windows". It says somewhere else that you can not see inside the cells until the doors are unlocked and opened. Based on the map and some descriptions, it seems like a lot was edited in this scenario from what the writer had originally done.
Merisiel _pre-gen_ |
heh - happens that way.
@Raul - Merisiel wasn't around for Rosh the Simple Stableboy. I (the player) couldn't tell if you (the player) were wondering, or if Raul was just failing to connect-the-dots. Question answered :)
Merisiel makes quick rounds to each of the other cells, opening them just long enough to determine whether they're occupied.
assuming the cells are empty... as currently seems likely...
Once she's finished, she'll join Raul and try to find a release mechanism for the hidden corridor.

Anyone else doing anything? They are not all empty. . .
Merisiel, for just a second, while heading to the next door, you catch the odd whiff of brimstone.
Let me get 2 rounds worth of actions from the rest.
Daveak Fallenheart |
Daveak will follow down the hall with Merisiel hand on swords ready for anything. If he gets a sense of danger he will draw both swords and ready an attack

No danger at the moment, but drawing swords might be a good idea down here.

Alright, as Raul is pressing along the wall, Merisiel opens up another door only to find it likewise empty save for the two buckets. Suddenly a section of wall besides Raul begins to crack, revealing a doorway as it opens. Now visible, but behind the doorway are two small devils, having heard the first door's creak, and also revealing a hidden passageway.

A roiling wave of flesh gushes forward. Amid the fatty surge wriggle half-formed limbs and a dripping tumorous face, they eye you mortals with hatred and hunger.

2.) Merisiel
3.) Grundle
4.) Jacen
5.) Raul

6.) Devils

Not totally sure on the mechanics of the map, but I should be able to do this
Raul steps forward, drawing his greatsword, and lays into the first devil with all of his might.

Grundle walks up towards the front of the group. As the disgusting mass reveals itself he gives a start, "UGH! What ARE you?!"
He backs up a step and draws his flails.
Move and Move, draw weapon.
DM Beckett |
As everyone rushes forward, all the attempted blows miss, either bouncing off of their rather thick skin, or just not getting the right angle due to the doorway's cover.

Crit Confirm: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14 <NO CRIT>
The two devils try to rake their claws at the two in front of them, but likewise have issues with the door's cover.
Daveak TAKES 3 points, and everyone is back up again. Also, please indicate what types of weapons (material) you are using.
DM Beckett |
That's a nice hit. Issue is, either Grundle or Daveak will need to move out of the way after this next attack or it doesn't connect. The two squares that they are in are the only two that can reach through the door, and likewise those are the only two squares that can be attacked. I'd suggest either switch hitting or drawing the out. I adjusted their positions a bit, and if you zoom in to 100% or more, it's a little easier to see the door. Now, if you have range or reach, it's a different story.
Daveak Fallenheart |

But he hits the wall accidentally, this new found anger-fueled power causing him to swing wide. He screams and spits at the mass of flesh.
DM Beckett |
I didn't realize they or I had moved out of melee since last round, but I should have checked the map first. Apologies.
The second round follows the first as the Lemures dodge behind the door frame, preventing anything from getting past their thick skin, and again attempt to rake their claws against the two in front of them.
Lemure vs Daveak: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18 <MISS>
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Lemure vs Daveak: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16 <MISS>

Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Lemure vs Grundle: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7 <MISS>
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4
But to their irritation, what's good for the goose is good for the gander, and Daveak and Grundle mostly avoid damage. Grundle TAKES 3 DAMAGE.

Jacen and Merisiel are still holding for a better option to present itself, while Dakeak and Grundle attack and then step back. Raul swings in and deals a massive blow, but it's not good enough to take a devil down. Grundle likewise hits, but does not seem to have too much effect.
The two Lemures then take the opportunity to come out, seeking death and destruction over personal safety, but because they have cover from the door, no AoO.

Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Raul: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 <MISS>
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2
The heroes, no longer getting aid from the doorway seem to be better off, as not a single claw lands.
Jacen, if you would like to have Readied an Action for when they come out, I'm cool with that. Merisiel, you can activate your Held action to travel on the other side. No flank yet, and you will draw an AoO at the last square, but might set you up for next round if someone gets lucky. Or you could try to toss a dagger if you like. :)
Merisiel _pre-gen_ |
Merisiel takes the opportunity to maneuver behind the devils, according to her prior, intricate plan of "get behind 'em and poke 'em!". Having been in such close quarters in prior situations, she determines that an unexpectedly low tumble between the legs of the combatants is more likely to result in an intact Merisiel arriving at the intended destination.
Round 2.2

Grundle roars this time, most semblance of coherent thought gone. He whips his flails manically...

Rage Attack 2: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 2 = 10
Rage Damage 2: 1d8 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 2 = 6
The first flail landing with a sickening thud and an even more sickening grin from the half-elf. The second flail goes wide eliciting a curse.
DM Beckett |
Daveak and Grundle are wearing one down while Raul has the other much nearer death. Jacen utters a few arcane words and tries to smack the creature's mind around a bit.
Once again they attack.

All attacks miss, and back to the party
DM Beckett |
Between the three of you, one finally drops,, quickly melting away into a viscous glob of flesh that seems to evaporate into nothingness. The other continues it's attack, but isn't long for it's return to it's native plane as well.
Claw @ Grundle: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10 <MISS>

Your up again. Have you guys been noting that damage you took the last few rounds? It's small, but I tried a new method of doing it, and wasn't sure. I think it was 3 points to Grundle, Daveak and Raul.
Grundle Farbon PFS |
Yep, damage already updated in my HP :)
Grundle roars again, but notices Merisiel behind the hideous thing. He hops over to fully draw the attention of the thing away from her and he attacks.

His right hand flail-usually more reliable than the left-sinks in the mound of flesh, throwing his balance off for his second strike.
