"Funny thing is, I'd just been reading the latest Society Chronicles a few days ago, and there was one where a Paladin was convinced he was seeing 'Evil chairs' everywhere...Paladins, right???"
Sirius carefully circles around to the chair's back, and deviously puts a huge load of papers on the seat!
Improved Dirty Trick to entangle, flank: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Suddenly, he gasps as he notices one of the papers, dropping all the others as he grabs it for a closer look.
"There's a sale at Penny's!!!"

![]() |

Angela rolls her eyes at the theif's antics. "Greeeaaat, maybe you can fiinnaally buy that bag you've been wanting."

![]() |

Blarg begins to gnaw and rip at the back of the chair, but the solid wood is difficult for the little dinosaur to puncture with his teeth. Finally he gets a good grip with his last attack, but is still unable to rend at it. 2 miss, 1 hit that failed to overcome hardness.
Koani fires off an arrow at the chair and while it strikes at the animated chair solidly, the arrow splinters on contact. Fails to overcome hardness
Sirius attempts to overload the chair, but but by the time he finishes all that managed to stay make for a nice booster seat for a halfling...
Round 1:
Animated Chair
Sheela
Sirius
Koani
Blarg
Rogar
Angela

![]() |

"Wait, I think I've heard of this thing before..."
Knowledge(Arcana): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
"Ooo! A sale at Penny's? Do they have those little red handbags on discount? Perfect for storing a quick change of clothes for... emergencies."

![]() |

"Hold on, I can almost swear I've read about this type of enchantment before..."
Knowledge arcana w/free inspiration and heroism: 1d20 + 7 + 2 + 1d6 ⇒ (19) + 7 + 2 + (5) = 33
"Oh, it's a basic chair enchanted to move about, it'll be as hard to take apart as an actual chair... Wait, did you say little red bags?"
_________
If I can I'd like to know all the nitty-gritty little details about the chair. Did it get used too hard a few days ago? Is it scraped or has it been patched up at all? Is there a way a smart, but spell-less, halfling could undo the spells on the poor thing?

![]() |

The caster who animated this chair clearly gave it extraordinary control of its arms. They appear to articulate in such a way as to grab and crush any occupant unfortunate enough to be seated within the chair. (In addition to its slam attack, it has grab and constrict.) Unfortunately, the spells that animate objects such as this are impossible to break without magic above your level of understanding. Breaking the chair would be the easiest option. (With hardness 5, jab hard and hope for a high number. Aid another on a heavy hitter is a good call also. Constructs can suffer from precision damage, so sneak attack is a good answer as well.)
Round 1:
Animated Chair
Sheela
Sirius
Koani
Blarg
Rogar
Angela

![]() |

Looks like it has been ~5 days since Rogar's last post. Tonight I'll move forward. If anyone has a bot action that they'd like him to take, post it in a spoiler tag. Also I forgot that Sirius does not have sneak attack. Entangle/Grapple/Pin/CdG would probably be more up his alley and would be effective as well.

1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Just in the nick of time Rogar pushes his leshy puppet out of the way and attacks! Puppet rolls be-gone!
Rogar's Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Rogar's Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Gah! I have leshy stink on me!

![]() |

"Okay, now that I have some space...it's time to summon!" Sheela begins calling upon the celestial realm to call forth a celestial creature.
Casting Summon Monster I. This will take the entire round.

![]() |

Sirius tries forcibly wedging the chair's arm under the edge of the table....
Improved Dirty Trick to entangle, flank: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

![]() |

Rogar, still mad at his leshy puppet, fuels it into his Rage and his attack against the foul chair.
Waraxe attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Waraxe dmg: 1d10 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

![]() |

Sheela begins to cast a spell as Sirus runs up and tries to bog down the chair. He turns the chair hard, wedging it under the table lip, but the chair simply bends its legs a bit and moves right back out... where it meets Rogar's axe. Fueled by the dwarf's furniture induced fury, splinters of wood go flying about and the chair turns, inviting the barbarian to take a seat.
Round 2:
Animated Chair (-11)
Sheela
Sirius
Koani
Blarg
Rogar
Angela

![]() |

Blarg continues to ineffectually shred at the furniture.
Angelabot-9000 moves forward to strike at the chair, hoping to give her ally a boost. (Botting Aid Another action since it seems the most frequently used.)
Attack + Flank: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 2 = 6 Fails to aid
The chair attempts to force Rogar to take a seat.
Slam: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Grab: 1d20 + 5 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 5 + 4 = 11 Fail
It slams into Rogar's knees and he buckles over in pain. The chair arms move and attempt to pin his arms in place, pulling him into the seat. Rogar holds fast with all of his might and the chair arms eventually slip and release.
Round 3:
Animated Chair (-11)
Sheela
Sirius
Koani
Blarg
Rogar (-8)
Angela

![]() |

Rogar, mad at the chair for makinghim almost sit, takes a swing...
Waraxe Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

![]() |

Sheela asks Angela "Um, can I blind these kinds of things? Grandmama taught me a little trick that might help."
I'll need to know if I can blind the chair with a Glitterdust spell before proceeding. Angela got a 33 on her knowledge check.

Blarg the Dinosaur |

Grar, swipe, swipe. Only a very bad chair would try to eat his Koani, and then her hairy short friend. Eventually the little dino has to get that nat 20, right?
bite: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
talon 1: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
talon : 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
bite damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2
bite damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1

![]() |

Sirius hops onto the table...
Acrobatics to jump, if necessary: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15
Improved Dirty Trick to entangle, flank: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
...and stumbles as he reaches out to kick the chair, momentarily looking like he is about to fall back off before a mysterious breeze blows him back upright.

![]() |

Thanks for the bot! I ended up having less time this morning than I thought. (I'm in Japan Standard Time so the EST midnight is about two in the afternoon here...)
Angela shakes off the horrible feeling that the last few seconds she'd been a robot and not in control of herself. What was that sensation? An inevitable passing by? I liked that efficiency, but not enough to give up my agency...
She then takes another cool look at the chair, thinking about Sheela's question of blinding the chair. She gives the guard disguised woman the answer she came to while trying to fumble up the chair's legs and help Rogar land his next hit.
"Rogar, this time will you listen to what I have to say? If you wait just a second, I'll trip it up and that'll be when to strike! Okay?"
_______________
Aid another, Flank Heroism: 1d20 + 2 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 + 2 + 2 = 18
That's the best attack modifier I'm going to get for a very long time... Heroism is nice, but speaking of that spell, how long has it been since we left the room? It should be running out shortly, shouldn't it?

![]() |

It took about 15 minutes to get to Zarta's room, and 5 minutes to navigate the vents. A few minutes of incidental searching as well, so in the range of 20-25 minutes.
The party surrounds and tries hard to splinter the chair, but nobody is able to land a damaging blow. Angela finally manages to line up a shot for Rogar.
Sheela's summon should be complete, so that should get a turn now as well. Also, yes, the chair can be blinding. Aim for it's angry eye carvings.
Round 3:
Animated Chair (-11)
Sheela and Summon
Sirius
Koani
Blarg
Rogar (-8)
Angela

![]() |

Sheela scratches her head. She summons Soaring Star, the celestial eagle.
Slightly freaked out, the eagle bites and scratches at the chair.
talon 1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3
talon 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1
bite, flanking: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4
As that happens, Sheela pulls out a wand and- ack, Angela's in the way! "Angela, step to the side next to Rogar or Sirius so I can cover the chair in glitter!"
Sheela readies an action to cast Glitterdust once she can cast it in a way that would only hit the chair and maybe Soaring Star. Will Save DC 15 to resist.
Soaring Star's Will save if needed: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
She pulls out her wand of Burning Hands.

![]() |

Soaring star claws at the chair but is unable to so much as scrape at the wood.
It continues to try to force Rogar to sit down...
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 Miss
...but the reckless barbarian is unmoved.
Round 4:
Animated Chair (-11)
Sheela and Soaring Star
Sirius
Koani and Blarg
Rogar (-8, +4 on next attack)
Angela

![]() |

Ack, when did chair get next to me? Backing off now!
Angela scurries back when the chair gets close to her, unable to do a thing when it's right next to her. She then yells for Sheela to "Have at it!"
She then readies her spear to try helping Rogar again after he attacks.
________
Readied Aid another: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 2 = 6
Okay that's good to hear. Also, should Angela have made another linguistics check about the cipher? I meant to ask earlier but forgoteth somewhere...

![]() |

Soaring Star continues his assault, lining up with Rogar.
I don't know if flanking applies here.
talon 1: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 3 + 2 = 17
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1
talon 2: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 3 + 2 = 23
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2
bite, flanking: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 2 = 6
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3
"Great, now move out of- no, not there, I can't-" Sheela gives a sigh and just runs up, forgoing her readied action. "Sorry about this double S. It's going to get real hot."
She points her wand and a flurry of flames shoot out.
Using the wand of Burning Hands. Reflex Save DC 11 for half.
Fire Damage: 3d4 ⇒ (1, 2, 1) = 4 Pathetic.
Soaring Star's Reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Soaring Star is confused, but he avoids most of the flames.

![]() |

Ready to attack, Rogar swings...
waraxe attack: 1d20 + 4 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 4 + 7 = 21
waraxe dmg.: 1d10 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
BTW, I'm at 1 HP.... i need healing

![]() |

"Yellow - Dwarf - NEEDS FOOD BADLY!"
Sirius tries to take one of the inanimate chairs surrounding the desk, and mounts it at an inconvenient angle atop/astride its more virile sibling.
Improved Dirty Trick to entangle: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15 +1 for higher ground? Does that work here, or at all with maneuvers?

![]() |

Rogar: The -8 marking on your name is your running total, not damage from this round. You've only taken 8 total damage this fight.
Sheela: Unfortunately, hardness applies to all damage, not just physical damage, as opposed to DR which only applies to physical damage. Hardness is rough... which is why my season 6 character still has an adamantine greataxe.
Sirius: I'm not sure if that works here or not, but since you succeed either way I shall refrain from making a decision. Lazy GM kicks can down road.
Sheera and Soaring Star cover the chair in minor dings and ash marks, but nothing that seems to deter it.
Rogar takes another large chunk out of the seat back with his axe as Sirius finally manages to entangle it within its brethren.
Slam: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 5 - 2 = 11
The chair continues attempting to rid itself of the axe-wielding carpenter, but to no avail.
Round 5:
Animated Chair (-20, Entangled)
Sheela and Soaring Star
Sirius
Koani and Blarg
Rogar (-8, +4 on next attack)
Angela

![]() |

Eeek, it's also hardness?
Soaring Star flies further away from the flames before attacking the chair again.
talon 1: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 2 = 6
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3
talon 2: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 3 + 2 = 21
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4
bite, flanking: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 3 + 2 = 18
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1
Sheela takes a step back, pulls out a different wand and drops it on the table. "Koani, use this on Rogar before he bleeds out. I'm gonna try to burn this thing again!"
She points her wand and another flurry of flames shoot out.
Using the wand of Burning Hands. Reflex Save DC 11 for half.
Fire Damage: 3d4 ⇒ (2, 1, 4) = 7 Better!
My summon expires at the start of my next turn.

![]() |

Koani steps up behind Rogar (5 ft step), gets out her wand (move action) and then taps Rogar gently on the back of the shoulder. Rogar feels a cool healing breeze on his face, and some of his wounds heal. Flavored for Erastil
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Blarg the Dinosaur |

Blarg continues his fierce chewing and clawing.
bite: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
talon 1: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
talon 2: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
confirm: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
bite damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4
talon 1, crit: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 4) = 5
talon 2: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Sound of head hitting desk. I hoped that crit might be high enough to get through hardness...

![]() |

Sirius steps down to the inanimate chair at the end of the table, and tries to kick the animate chair right in the stylized eye carvings...
Improved Dirty Trick to blind, flank: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
...while still working to keep his balance. He only makes it look easy.

![]() |

I had been wondering why Rogar was suddenly so low...
And another aid another attempt; Angela adores alliteration, apparently!
Angela gives a slight frown as Sheela unleashes a fan of flames over the workspace. "Oh! Be careful with that, you might burn some important documents there if you're not careful!"
She then hefts her longspear again and tries to entagle the arms of the chair enough to give Rogar an opening.
______________
Aid Another, heroicly!: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 + 2 = 14

![]() |

"Phew! Finally. Er, sorry Soaring Star." The eagle returns to its celestial realm.
Sheela proceeds to extinguish the clerical documents she may have lit aflame. "Okay, okay. Now then... were we looking for something?"
We should heal Rogar, right?
Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
That should get him to 14 HP.

![]() |

I think Rogar as only missing 8 hit points, so the first roll should be enough to heal him to full.
Angela gives a nod as the group finishes off the chair. "Still seems like a stupid security measure. Hmph. But good work people, it took a little bit but almost no one got hurt and none of those injuries were serious!"
Angela moves over to help Sheela pat out the fires the magic caster created, while still addressing everyone else. "So does the plan from earlier still sound good? Wlright now let's get to it!"
_________________
If I can, I'll just use the rolls from earlier.

![]() |

"Thanks." Rogar says to Sheela.
Sorry, I forgot to say that I was going on a day trip snowshoeing and would not be able to post. sorry.
